Emotional Iga Swiatek voices support for Ukraine after clinching Qatar Open title

French Open winner Iga Swiatek managed to temper her frustrations and rally from a set and a break down in brutal heat to overpower Estonian Kaia Kanepi 4-6 7-6(2) 6-3 on Wednesday to reach her first Australian Open semi-final.

Poland`s Swiatek will next meet 27th-seeded American Danielle Collins, who earlier defeated Frenchwoman Alize Cornet 7-5 6-1, for a place in Saturday`s final at Melbourne Park.

In their first career meeting, Swiatek wasted breakpoint chances in each of Kanepi`s first three service games and it was the Estonian who converted her first chance in the seventh game to nose ahead.

Swiatek saved four setpoints in the ninth game that lasted 16 minutes but could not stop Kanepi from taking the opener on her ninth opportunity after another lengthy game.

"In the first set I had so many breakpoints, I felt like I missed my chances because she broke me on her first breakpoint," Swiatek said on court.

"I was pretty annoyed. That was a mistake because I should have been focused on the future, on the next ball."

Kanepi, 36, appeared set to progress beyond the last eight at a Grand Slam for the first time when she broke early in the second, with a frustrated Swiatek slapping herself and slamming her racquet on court.

The Estonian did most of the damage with her powerful double-handed backhand, leaving Swiatek rooted to the spot and watching helplessly as the winners screamed past.

But the 2020 Roland Garros champion, who committed 12 double faults in the match, regained her composure and raised her level in a second set tiebreaker to level the contest at 1-1.

Swiatek suffered two more breaks in the decider but managed to break 115th-ranked Kanepi four times. She showed some incredible defence on her second match point, sealing the three-hour contest when Kanepi sent a backhand wide for her 62nd unforced error.

"I`m really glad that I have my voice because I was shouting so loud," Swiatek said.
"This match was crazy and without the energy in the stadium, I think it would`ve been really hard to win it."

While Kanepi admitted to feeling a "bit heavy" in her legs in the third set, Swiatek was unflustered in the sweltering conditions and said she would be ready for the last-four clash against Collins on Thursday.

"My main concern is if the sun is going to be bothering me during the serve," Swiatek told reporters. "So I didn`t really care that it`s hot and humid.

"I know that I`m physically really prepared, and I hoped that she`s going to be more tired in the end. I actually wanted to prolong some ... rallies to make her more tired because I have big trust in myself in terms of my physical shape."

That was a mistake because I should have been focused on the future, on the next ball." Kanepi, 36, appeared set to progress beyond the last eight at a Grand Slam for the first time when she broke early in the second, with a frustrated Swiatek slapping herself and slamming her racquet on court.

Australian Open: Iga Swiatek holds off Kaia Kanepi to reach the semis

Former French Open champion Iga Swiatek continued her consistent streak at Grand Slams, dominating from the baseline to roll over Daria Kasatkina of Russia 6-2 6-3 on Saturday to storm into the Australian Open fourth round.
It is the sixth consecutive major in which the 20-year-old from Poland has made at least the fourth round.

"It`s not a good way to focus on that," said Swiatek, who has sailed through her first three matches this week, losing only 12 games in the process.

"That stat, I`m really proud of it right now that I achieved it, but in the morning I would say it gave me a little bit more pressure."

The 23rd-ranked Kasatkina, a former top-10 player, won her only previous meeting with Swiatek in 2021 but that match was played on grass.

Seventh-seeded Swiatek, who won the claycourt Grand Slam at Roland Garros in 2020, hit 24 winners and broke Kasatkina`s serve twice in each set to cruise through the contest at Margaret Court Arena in one hour and 34 minutes.

Swiatek felt she was able to tactically disrupt Kasatkina from using her topspin-heavy forehand.

"That was a really intense match. I feel like I`m playing better and better every match, so that`s a positive," the 20-year-old said.

Swiatek will next meet either another Russian in 10th seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova or 38th-ranked Sorana Cirstea of Romania for a place in the quarter-finals at Melbourne Park.

Taking one match at a time has worked well for Swiatek and she was not planning to change that approach.

"I want to have some tournaments that I`m going to really make something bigger than fourth round," she said.

"But on the other hand I don`t want to focus on that, because I`m pretty good right now at just looking at another match, another step, not looking (at) what`s going to happen if I`m going to win two more matches."

Australian Open: Another major, another fourth round for sizzling Iga Swiatek

Poland's Iga Swiatek put in a clinical performance to move past Mona Barthel of Germany with a 6-2 6-2 win on her Olympic debut, as sweltering conditions in Tokyo took a toll on the players on the opening day of tennis at the Games.

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova lost only one game versus Italy's Sara Errani but this year's Roland Garros runner-up had spent enough time on Court Three under the blazing sun to feel dizzy and took a medical timeout in the second set.

Pavlyuchenkova, competing in Tokyo as a representative of the Russian Olympic Committee because the country was stripped of its flag and anthem for doping offenses, tried to keep herself cool with ice bags and an air tube but it was not enough.

She called for the trainer while leading 4-1 in the second set but was able to return to court to complete a 6-0 6-1 win, with temperatures hovering around 33 degrees Celsius (91.4°F).

"I feel better but I have a massive headache now so that's why I was trying to try to cool down after the match and rest, relax a little bit," she told reporters. "Just happy I got that one through."

Swiatek, the 2020 French Open champion, had the chance to kick off proceedings on the main show court after Naomi Osaka's match was moved back by a day due to her involvement in Friday's opening ceremony.

With media, volunteers, and the players' entourage the only ones present at the 20,000-seater stadium to witness her Olympic debut, Swiatek managed to stay calm and composed to beat Barthel, formerly ranked among the world's top 25.

The 20-year-old got off to a fast start with a 5-0 lead and did not look back to set up a second-round meeting against either Spain's Paula Badosa or France's Kristina Mladenovic.

"I'm pretty happy that I'm into the second round and not only the humidity and temperature was hard but also the sun because on one side it was pretty hard to serve," said Swiatek, whose father Tomasz competed for Poland in rowing at the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

"We had to adjust quickly and change our ball toss. That was hard but the players who can adjust are going to be the best ones here."

French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova did not have to spend much time on the court as her Kazakh opponent Zarina Diyas retired with a left leg problem with the Czech leading 5-2. Krejcikova will meet Canadian teenager Leylah Fernandez next.

In men's doubles, Britain's Andy Murray and Joe Salisbury stunned second-seeded Nicolas Mahut and Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-3 6-2 with the French pair looking to add the Olympic gold to their resume having won all four majors at least once.

Tokyo Olympics: Iga Swiatek makes fast start as players struggle with heat factor

Ons Jabeur's historic Wimbledon campaign saw her reach the women's quarter-finals on Monday, beating Poland's 2020 French Open champion Iga Swiatek 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 in their fourth-round match.

The 26-year-old is the first Tunisian woman to reach the last eight at Wimbledon and will face Belarus second seed Aryna Sabalenka who defeated Elena Rybakina 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Sabalenka will be playing in her first Grand Slam quarter-final.

Jabeur showed great poise to stay in the match after she let slip a 5-4 lead and serving for the first set only for the Pole to reel off three games on the bounce. Swiatek, after a flat opening, had taken note of a young Polish fan holding up a board inscribed 'Jazda Iga' ('Come on Iga').

"It was a great match and I had to stay calm rather than get angry when I failed to close out the first set as getting angry would not have helped my cause," said Jabeur.

"Today I decided to change my game a bit as everyone knows I am doing drop shots and being aggressive was key today."

Jabeur never looked back once she had got over the loss of the first set.

Her breaking her 20-year-old opponent in the first game of the second set the tone for the rest of the encounter.

Indeed such was her dominance that Swiatek at one point having been out-witted by a Jabeur drop shot smashed the top of the net angrily with her racquet.

Wimbledon 2021: History-making Ons Jabeur beats Iga Swiatek to play her first-ever quarter-finals

Claycourt king Rafael Nadal overcame a wobbly start and issues with the stadium lights to subdue Italian teenager Jannik Sinner 7-5 6-3 6-0 on Monday and book a place in the French Open quarter-finals.

The Spanish defending champion, looking to claim a record-extending 14th Roland Garros singles title and become the only man to win 21 Grand Slam singles crowns, has won 35 consecutive sets in Paris.

World number 19 Sinner, who at 19 years old has been labeled as the next big thing in tennis, hit a brick wall on Court Philippe Chatrier after leading 5-3 in the opening set.

Third seed Nadal will face Diego Schwartzman for a place in the semi-finals after beating the Argentine in the last four last year.

Although the sun shone throughout, part of the match was played under the floodlights.

"I think the lights went on too early. The court is covered from one side. When the sun was lower and hit the light, it created a shadow on the court. It was tricky," Nadal told a news conference.

"Honestly, I don't know why they put on the lights that early. We have been playing without lights here in Roland Garros forever."

The 20-times Grand Slam champion still produced his best tennis when it mattered most.

"I played against a very good player who has a great future and I'm very happy with the win," Nadal said.

"I started playing well the first couple of games and then I played too defensive for a few games and gave him the chance to step into the court and play his shots. After that, the match changed a lot."

Facing the ultimate challenge on clay, Sinner struggled to get into the groove before canceling out an early break as Nadal experienced problems with his first serve.

Sinner, who lost to the claycourt master in the quarter-finals here last year, found himself up a break after two Nadal double faults and a few uncharacteristic errors.

Serving for the set, however, Sinner lost the game to love and Nadal leveled at 5-5 on his opponent's 25th unforced error before breaking to love again to seal the opening set.

After losing eight games in a row, Sinner stopped the rot with a break, clinching it after rushing to the net to retrieve a drop shot and delivering a stunning crosscourt passing shot.

Nadal quickly recovered to break again, however, and he served out to take a two-set lead before securing his 104th match win at Roland Garros.

The Spaniard has not lost at the Paris Grand Slam tournament since 2015 when he was knocked out in the last eight by Novak Djokovic, his potential semi-final opponent.

French Open: Merciless Rafael Nadal marches into the quarter-finals

French Open champion Iga Swiatek said securing a spot in the top 10 of the world rankings was evidence her game had become more consistent after the Pole struggled with some 'frustrating' results following her maiden Grand Slam triumph last year.

Swiatek, who turns 20 at the end of the month, demolished former world number one Karolina Pliskova 6-0 6-0 on Sunday in Rome to win her first WTA 1000 title and climbed six spots to number nine in the world on Monday.

"It is pretty crazy and I'm really proud of myself that I'm actually starting to be more consistent because that was my goal from the beginning," Swiatek told reporters.

"Actually, I feel right now that I am doing huge progress in that matter."

Swiatek went from being a largely unknown teenager to acquiring celebrity status in October when she became Poland's first Grand Slam singles champion and the youngest woman to win the title since Monica Seles in 1992.

Following her, Roland Garros win she skipped the rest of the 2020 season, and the Adelaide International had been her only title this year before Sunday.

She lost in the fourth round of 2021 Australian Open and also made early exits at the WTA 1000 events in Miami and Madrid.

"It was actually a bit frustrating after French Open because sometimes you can't see the result of your work," said Swiatek, who last week called herself a "perfectionist".

"Obviously winning a Grand Slam is great, but after that comes rankings, and this year it was different.

"So I'm really proud that I'm going to have in my resume that I'm top 10 because I always wanted that. I also want to be consistent. So right now our goal is to keep me in that place and go further."

'It’s pretty crazy here', Iga Swiatek on her brand new celebrity status

While Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic square off for the 56th time in the men's French Open final, the women's game is in the throes of a youthful revolution as Iga Swiatek was crowned its latest first-time Grand Slam champion.

The 19-year-old ensured her place in history as Poland's first major singles champion on Saturday, becoming the ninth woman in 14 tournaments to secure her maiden Slam title.

Swiatek, who used the coronavirus lockdown to complete her graduation exam, has toyed with the idea of continuing her studies, but will surely now go the same route as her vanquished opponent in the Roland Garros final.

Sofia Kenin, 21, turned down a scholarship to the University of Miami in 2017 after holding her own against Maria Sharapova in the third round of that year's US Open.

She went on to win the Australian Open in January and narrowly missed out on becoming the first woman to capture two majors in the same season since Angelique Kerber in 2016.

Her Melbourne triumph followed Bianca Andreescu's breakout performance at last year's US Open, the Canadian taking home the title on her main draw debut in New York.

Since Serena Williams collected the last of her 23 Slam crowns at the 2017 Australian Open, the likes of Simona Halep, Sloane Stephens and the now-retired Caroline Wozniacki have all gone on to land a breakthrough major.

However, the 29-year-old Halep is the outlier in a series of recent major winners, seven of eight who were aged 23 or under at the time.

Kenin, Andreescu and Swiatek have accounted for three with Naomi Osaka grabbing three titles of her own, and top-ranked Ashleigh Barty triumphing at the 2019 French Open.

The average age of champions in that time is 21.5. By comparison, the average age of the eight previous Slam winners was 27.4.

"For sure it's inspiring. I know that there are no limits. Even though you're really young and you're an underdog, you can do a lot in a sport like tennis," said Swiatek.

- 'First of many' says Laver -

Multiple Grand Slam winner Mats Wilander compared Swiatek's game to that of Novak Djokovic, while greats of the past such as Rod Laver and Chris Evert believe the young Pole is just getting started.

"I think she is there to be a Grand Slam champion, multiple times. I genuinely believe that Iga can be the one," Wilander told Eurosport.

Laver hailed Swiatek's "nerveless performance" in what was only her second tour-level final and tweeted it was "the first of many majors to come".

Evert, who won seven times in Paris, wrote: "What a sterling two weeks of brilliant tennis. Many, many more GS Titles to come." She also paid tribute to a "great year" for Kenin, 16-2 at Slams in 2020.

As Williams, who withdrew in Paris with an Achilles injury, continues her pursuit of Margaret Court's record 24 majors, the window of opportunity for the 39-year-old is closing with a number of young players rising to prominence.

"I think it's great. A new generation coming up," said Kenin. "It's always good to see youngsters taking over and playing great tennis."

Former US Open finalist Pam Shriver believes Swiatek and Kenin could become the leading faces of the next generation.

"We're always wondering where the next great rivalry is going to be. Well, let's just wonder about this one because they are two years apart," she told rolandgarros.com.

Swiatek hoisted the trophy after swatting aside all comers in swashbuckling style, the first women's champion to win the tournament without a dropping a set since Justine Henin in 2007.

Like surprise 2017 French Open winner Jelena Ostapenko, it also represented her first title at tour level -- and she is eager to back it up, unlike the Latvian who has yet to return to the same heights.

"I know my game isn't developed perfectly. I think the biggest change for me is going to be to be consistent. I think this is what women's tennis is struggling with," said Swiatek, an avowed fan of Rafael Nadal.

"That's why we have so many new Grand Slam winners because we are not, like, as consistent as Rafa, Roger (Federer), and Novak."

Defending champion Simona Halep hurried into the French Open quarter-finals by sweeping aside Polish teenager Iga Swiatek in a 6-1, 6-0 victory on Monday.

Third seed Halep produced a nearly flawless performance on Court Philippe Chatrier against a bold opponent who turned 18 last Friday.

The Romanian will now face another teenager, American Amanda Anisimova, who thrashed Spain's Aliona Bolsova 6-3, 6-0.

"I feel old," joked the 27-year-old Halep.

The former world number one said she had been coping well with the pressure of being defending champion at Roland Garros.

"I saw it different since the beginning. I felt different. I felt more relaxed, even if the pressure was on," she said. I feel good in this position and I always say that even if you're No. 1, you win a Grand Slam, you have to enjoy the moment,'' said Halep.

"So I did that pretty well this year. Back to the quarter-finals is not easy, so I'm thinking just to give my best again next round. It's just what I'm thinking about," Halep added.

Swiatek came out with all guns blazing but failed to master her raw power, bowing out after 45 minutes when Halep whipped a forehand winner down the line.
