The statement said that these areas would enable the IAEA to check that the relevant international safety standards are constantly applied during the discharge, backed up with real-time and other monitoring data on its website. IAEA Director General Grossi said that the agreement set broad parameters for the agency’s "permanent presence at the site to implement the monitoring, corroboration and assessment activities that are indispensable for transparency and for building confidence – both in Japan and abroad – that the discharge will neither harm people nor the environment." Grossi made clear, however, that he believed Iran had overreacted.

"I strongly condemn this disproportionate and unprecedented unilateral measure which affects the normal planning and conduct of agency verification activities in Iran and openly contradicts the cooperation that should exist between the agency and Iran," he said in a statement.

Iran's move, known as "de-designation" of inspectors, is allowed; member states can generally veto inspectors assigned to visit their nuclear facilities under the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and each country's safeguards agreement with the agency governing inspections.

But the IAEA said Tehran's decision went beyond normal practice. It said Iran had told it that it would bar "several" inspectors, without giving a number.

"These inspectors are among the most experienced agency experts with unique knowledge in enrichment technology," the agency said. "With today's decision, Iran has effectively removed about one third of the core group of the Agency's most experienced inspectors designated for Iran."

Iran defended its move and accused the United States, Britain, France and Germany of politicising the IAEA watchdog.

"Unfortunately, despite Iran's positive, constructive and continuous interaction of the with the agency, the three European countries and the United States abused the (IAEA's) Board of Governors for their own political purposes," Foreign Ministry spokesperson Nasser Kanaani told state media.

"Of course, Iran will continue its positive cooperation within the framework of the agreements that have been made, and emphasise the necessity of the agency's neutrality," he added.

The IAEA has approved the planned, decades-long water discharge from the devastated nuclear plant. The UN nuclear energy watchdog has said that the discharge meets the global standard.

However, IAEA chief Rafael Grossi acknowledged that concerns remain. He was talking at a meeting in Iwaki, Fukushima prefecture.&nbsp;

About 1.33 million cubic metre of groundwater, rainwater and water used for cooling has been accumulated at the site of Fukushima nuclear plant. The nuclear plant is being decommissioned after several reactors went into meltdown after the 2011 tsunami badly damaged the plant.

Plant operator TEPCO treats the water through its ALPS processing system to remove almost all radioactive elements except tritium, and plans to dilute it before discharging it into the ocean over several decades.

It is expected that the release of water will begin this summer. But the plant is being opposed by regional neighbours. China has been vocal in condemning the plan. Even some communities, particularly fishing communities are opposing release of the water fearing that customers will shun their catches.

Grossi said the IAEA was not involved in the process to "give cover... to decorate something that is bad".

"When it comes to this activity here, what is happening is not some exception, some strange plan that has been devised only to be applied here and sold to you," he said.

"This is, as certified by the IAEA, the general practice that is agreed by and observed by many, many places, all over the world."

<h2>Anger among residents</h2>

Media reports say that there is visible anger among residents.

Tetsu Nozaki, chairman of the Fukushima Prefectural Federation of Fisheries Co-operative Associations, argued Japan's government was misrepresenting local sentiment, which he said remained strongly opposed to the plan.

"We fishery operators are left with no choice but to react emotionally and harden our attitude," he told Grossi as per AFP.

"I beg you to realise... that this project of the release of ALPS-processed water is moving ahead in the face of opposition."

Grossi said that he had no "magic wand" which could assuage all concerns. However, he underlined that the IAEA will set up permanent office to review the release for decades.

"We are going to stay here with you for decades to come, until the last drop of the water which is accumulated around the reactor has been safely discharged," he said.

In a final report, IAEA said on Tuesday that release of the water would have "negligible" impact on the environment. South Korea has said that it respects the finding.&nbsp;

China has been vocal in its criticism, with its foreign ministry spokesman warning Wednesday that "the report cannot prove the legitimacy of Japan's ocean-dumping plan".

About 1.33 million cubic metre of groundwater, rainwater and water used for cooling has been accumulated at the site of Fukushima nuclear plant. The nuclear plant is being decommissioned after several reactors went into meltdown after the 2011 tsunami badly damaged the plant. Plant operator TEPCO treats the water through its ALPS processing system to remove almost all radioactive elements except tritium, and plans to dilute it before discharging it into the ocean over several decades. It is expected that the release of water will begin this summer. But the plant is being opposed by regional neighbours. China has been vocal in condemning the plan. Even some communities, particularly fishing communities are opposing release of the water fearing that customers will shun their catches. Grossi said the IAEA was not involved in the process to "give cover... to decorate something that is bad". "When it comes to this activity here, what is happening is not some exception, some strange plan that has been devised only to be applied here and sold to you," he said. "This is, as certified by the IAEA, the general practice that is agreed by and observed by many, many places, all over the world." Anger among residents Media reports say that there is visible anger among residents. Tetsu Nozaki, chairman of the Fukushima Prefectural Federation of Fisheries Co-operative Associations, argued Japan's government was misrepresenting local sentiment, which he said remained strongly opposed to the plan. "We fishery operators are left with no choice but to react emotionally and harden our attitude," he told Grossi as per AFP. "I beg you to realise... that this project of the release of ALPS-processed water is moving ahead in the face of opposition." Grossi said that he had no "magic wand" which could assuage all concerns. However, he underlined that the IAEA will set up permanent office to review the release for decades. "We are going to stay here with you for decades to come, until the last drop of the water which is accumulated around the reactor has been safely discharged," he said. In a final report, IAEA said on Tuesday that release of the water would have "negligible" impact on the environment. South Korea has said that it respects the finding. Rafael Grossi, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), on Thursday (June 15) visited the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant in Ukraine. Grossi said it was unrealistic to expect that Moscow and Kyiv would sign a document ensuring the site's safety when fighting raged nearby.

Grossi, chief of the United Nations nuclear watchdog, was on inspection of the site of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant. It is the largest nuclear plant in Europe. Grossi's visit to the nuclear plant has come in the aftermath of the Kakhovka dam breach downstream on the Dnipro River.

The plant has a cooling pond which is used to cool six reactors from potentially disastrous overheating. The Kakhovka reservoir was normally used to refill the pond, but this can't be done now because of its falling water level after the dam breach.

<h2>Situation 'serious'</h2>

Grossi had to pass through a Russian checkpoint to reach the plant. The nuclear plant is located close to the military frontline. Russian news agencies quoted Grossi as saying that the situation at the site was "serious" but there was sufficient cooling water available.

Grossi added that IAEA inspectors will remain at the site.&nbsp;

"We have a political agreement which was formulated at the (United Nations) Security Council. Reaching a written agreement would be unrealistic at this stage because, as we know, there are no peace or ceasefire negotiations between the parties," TASS news agency quoted Grossi as saying.

Grossi said that the trip was "extremely difficult" but also "compact" and "important."

Grossi's visit to Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant had to be delayed by a day because of security reasons. There was heavy fighting between Ukrainian and Russian forces.

Russian forces captured both the nuclear plant and the Kakhovka hydroelectric dam shortly after President Vladimir Putin sent them into Ukraine on Feb. 24, 2022.

Grossi has made repeated calls for an end to hostilities and battles in the vicinity of the nuclear plant so that a miscalculation does not lead to any catastrophic accident. The six reactors inside the nuclear plant are in shutdown.

Russia and Ukraine blame each other for shelling the facility which has repeatedly cut power lines. There are diesel generators at the plant, which also have alternative water sources.

Alexei Likhachev, head of Russia's state nuclear energy firm Rosatom, was quoted by RIA news agency as saying that Grossi had observed during his visit the security measures taken at the plant to ensure its safety following the breach of the dam.

The missile is said to be capable of travelling at hypersonic speeds of up to 15 times the speed of sound and can reportedly penetrate the most advanced&nbsp;missile defence systems.&nbsp;

The hypersonic missile named by the Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei&nbsp;'Fattah' in Farsi, which roughly translates to “the opener,”&nbsp;as per Al Jazeera, was unveiled&nbsp;on Tuesday, at a ceremony, the images of which were posted by the state media.&nbsp;

It showed Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and senior commanders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) at the unveiling of the missile. "Today we feel that the deterrent power has been formed. This power is an anchor of lasting security and peace for the regional countries," said Raisi&nbsp;at the event, as per the Associated Press.&nbsp;

“The precision-guided Fattah hypersonic missile has a range of 1,400 km and it is capable of penetrating all defence shields,” said the head of the IRGC’s aerospace force, Amirali Hajizadeh, as quoted by Reuters citing the Iranian state television. The missile can move at a speed of up to Mach 15 (5,145 metres or 16,880 feet per second), reported Al Jazeera.&nbsp;

“It can bypass the most advanced anti-ballistic missile systems of the United States and the Zionist regime, including Israel's Iron Dome,” reported Reuters, citing Iran’s state TV, adding that the missile is a “big generational leap in the field of missiles”.&nbsp;

This missile also comes months after the IRGC aerospace chief first made the announcement back in November at an event marking the death anniversary of Hassan Tehrani Moghaddam, known as the father of Iranian missile technology.

The announcement last year prompted International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) chief Rafael Grossi to express concern, as hypersonic missiles, like ballistic missiles,&nbsp;can be equipped with nuclear warheads.&nbsp;

However, Grossi said that the new missile would not have “any influence” on negotiations with Iran over its nuclear activities. The United States had unilaterally withdrawn from the Iran nuclear deal in 2018 and imposed renewed sanctions. Since then, Tehran has not been obligated to follow the strict limits it agreed to on&nbsp;its nuclear activities.&nbsp;

Late last month, Iran claimed to have&nbsp;successfully test-launched its 4th generation Khorramshahr, “Khaibar.” The missile in question was the surface-to-surface ballistic missile with a range of 2,000 kilometres and was able to carry a 1,500 kg warhead.&nbsp;

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said on Wednesday (May 31) that Iran has apparently significantly increased its stockpile of enriched uranium in recent months, continuing its nuclear escalation.&nbsp;

However, IAEA has received a "possible explanation" from Iran over nuclear material at an undeclared site and has decided to close the file, news agency AFP reported citing a report it has seen.&nbsp;

In its report, IAEA said that the estimated stockpile of enriched uranium in Tehran had reached more than 23 times what was set as the limit.&nbsp;

The nuclear deal was signed in 2015 and Iran agreed to a pact with six major powers (China, France, Russia, the United Kingdom, the United States + Germany) to limit its nuclear programme. It was harder for Iran to obtain a weapon in return for relief from economic sanctions.&nbsp;

But former US President Donald Trump reneged on the deal in 2018 and reimposed harsh sanctions on Iran. Trump's decision led Tehran to start violating the agreement's nuclear limits about a year later.&nbsp;

But in recent time, there has been negotiations and talks to revive the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), but so far, there has not been any breakthrough.&nbsp;

The limit in the 2015 deal was 202.8 kilograms, but the report by AFP mentioned that Iran's total enriched uranium stockpile was estimated at 4,744.5 kilograms (10,459 pounds) as of May 13.&nbsp;

According to the report, Iran is continuing its enrichment of uranium to levels higher than the 3.67 per cent limit in the deal.&nbsp;

The stockpile of uranium enriched up to 20 per cent is now believed to be 470.9 kilograms — up 36.2 kg since the last report in February — while the amount enriched up to 60 per cent stands at 114.1 kilograms, an increase of 26.6 kg.

Notably, enrichment levels of around 90 per cent are required for use in a nuclear weapon.

Meanwhile, the report seen by AFP has come days before the board of governors of the IAEA is due to meet to review progress in addressing the watchdog's remaining concerns.&nbsp;

And the IAEA said in a separate report that it has decided to close the file relating to the presence of nuclear material at one undeclared site after receiving a "possible explanation" from Iran.

The UN nuclear watchdog "has no additional questions... and the matter is no longer outstanding at this stage", the report said of the site at Marivan in Abedeh County.&nbsp;

Russian troops occupied the facility early in their invasion of Ukraine and it remains near the frontline. Both sides blame each other for the shelling.

Earlier this month, he appealed for the protection zone around the plant to be set up, saying he was "astonished by the complacency" around the issue.

The plant accounted for around 20% of Ukraine's national power generation before the invasion, but has not produced any electricity since September when the last of its six reactors was taken offline.

IAEA chief heads to Ukraine to visit Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant

The US nuclear watchdog Chief Rafael Grossi will be visiting Ukraine's Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant next week in order to assess the 'serious situation' there. Issuing a statement on the IAEA's website, Grossi said that the nuclear safety and security dangers are all too obvious.

A military general in Libya said on Thursday (March 16) that more than two tonnes of natural uranium reported missing by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have been found. General Khaled al-Mahjoub, commander of eastern strongman Khalifa Haftar's communications division, said the containers of uranium had been recovered "barely five kilometres (three miles)" from where they had been stored in southern Libya.

Earlier on Thursday, the IAEA reported that the uranium had gone missing from a Libyan site and "may present a radiological risk."

It said that "10 drums containing approximately 2.5 tons of natural uranium in the form of uranium ore concentrate... were not present." The United Nations energy watchdog said that the site from which the uranium went missing was not currently under the regulatory control of Libya's state authority.

Uranium ore concentrate is considered to emit low levels of radioactivity. IAEA in its report, had warned about radiological risk as well as nuclear safety concerns.

Libya, under its long-ruling former dictator Moamer Kadhafi, had a suspected nuclear weapons programme, which it scrapped in 2003.

But the North African country has been mired in crisis since Kadhafi's fall in 2011, with a myriad of militias forming opposing alliances backed by foreign powers.

It remains split between a nominally interim government in the capital Tripoli in the west, and another in the east backed by military strongman Khalifa Haftar.

Uranium declared missing by IAEA found in south Libya: Military

The international atomic watchdog says, roughly 2.5 tons of natural Uranium is missing from a Libyan site that is not under the government's control. Inspectors from the UN Nuclear watchdog found that 10 drums, with 2.5 tons of natural uranium which was previously disclosed, is missing. The IAEA has said that this is a nuclear security issue.
