<p>Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the president of Mexico, has urged Guerrero residents to stay prepared for the storm. "Agree to move to shelters, stay in safe places, away from rivers, streams, ravines, and be alert," he said.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the National Coordination of Civil Protection said it evacuated citizens from dangerous areas to temporary shelters in Acapulco and Tecpán de Galeana. It advised people to avoid landslide-prone areas and crossing streams and flooded streets.</p>

<p>As per the warning, the storm could produce life-threatening floods and mudslides in mountainous areas.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The forecasters predicted a maximum rain of 16 inches across Guerrero and the western coastal section of Oaxaca through Thursday.</p>

<p>However, Category 5 storms lose energy over shallower waters when they make landfall. They are tropical storms with wind speeds over 157 miles per hour, the rarest and strongest class in the Saffir-Simpson scale. "There are no hurricanes on record even close to this intensity for this part of Mexico," the National Coordination of Civil Protection added. Otis could be more devastating than Hurricane Pauline, a 1997 storm that caused mass destruction and killed more than 200 people.</p>

<p>More than 100,000 residents in the Canadian province of Nova Scotia were without electricity early Saturday after severe winds pulled down trees. In neighbouring New Brunswick, around 36,000 residents were without power.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by the news Reuters, Matt Drover of the Nova Scotia electric utility said: "Crews have been able to restore power to some customers ... however, conditions are getting worse. In many cases, especially when winds are above 80 km/h, it isn't safe for our crews."&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>The Fujiwhara Effect</strong></h2>

<p>According to the National Weather Service (NWS), when two hurricanes (or cyclones, depending on your location) rotate in the same direction and come close to each other, they engage in an intense ‘rotational dance’ around a shared centre.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This phenomenon, where two cyclones interact, is known as the Fujiwhara effect. For the Fujiwhara effect to take place, the eyes or centres of both storms should be at a distance of less than 1400 km from each other.</p>

<p>Sakuhei Fujiwhara, a Japanese meteorologist, identified this phenomenon, which was first described in a paper published in 1921. Many years later, the occurrence was observed in the western Pacific Ocean when typhoons Marie and Kathy merged in 1964.</p>

<h2><strong>Five Possibilities under Fujiwhara Effect</strong></h2>

<p><strong>First possibility: </strong>If one hurricane is stronger than the other, the smaller one will orbit around the larger one and eventually collide with its centre, leading to absorption.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Second possibility: </strong>If two storms of almost equal strength pass near each other, they might be drawn towards a shared centre, potentially merging or simply swirling around each other temporarily before following separate paths.</p>

<p><strong>Third possibility: </strong>In rare cases, if the two cyclones are sufficiently powerful, they can combine, resulting in the formation of a supercyclone capable of causing significant destruction along coastlines.</p>

<p><strong>Fourth possibility:</strong> Partial straining out happens, in which a part of the smaller storm is lost to the atmosphere.</p>

<p><strong>Fifth possibility: </strong>Complete straining out takes place, in which the smaller storm is completely lost to the atmosphere. The straining out does not happen for storms of equal strength.</p>

<p>Governor Ron DeSantis of Florida warned during a press briefing on Monday about the significant impact likely from the storm, urging Floridians to take necessary precautions.</p>

<p>On the flip side, Franklin was positioned farther to the east, situated over the Atlantic Ocean. While landfall wasn't predicted, the storm's trajectory was forecasted to continue northward, running parallel to the US east coast.</p>

<p>Voluntary and mandatory evacuations were issued in multiple counties of Florida on Monday morning, which DeSantis stated is likely to expand. “There are going to be evacuation orders issued in all these Gulf Coast counties in the A and B zones (and) all the barrier islands places that are low-lying on the coast,” DeSantis stated.<br />
<br />
The government ordered mandatory evacuations for Pasco, Manatee, Hernando, Taylor, Pinellas, Hillsborough, Sarasota and Citrus counties for vulnerable structures and low-lying coastal areas. The evacuation orders issued in Hillsborough County also included parts of the Tampa area.<br />

<p>The storm is currently about 90 miles off the western tip of Cuba, and is expected to make landfall on Wednesday (Aug 30) morning near the Big Bend of Florida, the National Hurricane Center said.</p>

<p>“Idalia has been moving erratically and is nearly stationary,” the hurricane centre said.</p>

<p>“A motion toward the north-northeast and north is expected to begin later today, bringing the centre of Idalia over the extreme southeastern Gulf of Mexico by tonight,” it added.</p>

<h2><strong>State of emergency declared in Florida&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>On Sunday night, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis declared a state of emergency for 33 counties as the Florida Division of Emergency Management mobilised response personnel to deal with the storm.</p>

<p>“These things can wobble, so Floridians along our Gulf Coast should be vigilant even if you’re currently outside the [forecast zone] cone,” DeSantis said from the Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee, according to CNN.</p>

<p>He said that around 1,100 National Guard members had been dispatched and command centres have been set up to deal with power outages and other damages.</p>

<p>President Joe Biden spoke with DeSantis on Monday (Aug 28) and approved an emergency declaration for the US state as Tropical Storm Idalia approaches, the White House said.</p>

<p>NHC added that tornadoes were possible in southeast California, southern Nevada, western Arizona, and far southwest Utah.</p>

<p>FEMA deployed teams to areas in Hilary's path, while California Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency for much of the state's southern area.</p>

According to the U.S. National Hurricane Center, Hilary, a powerful Category-4 hurricane, churned about 325 miles south of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, Friday afternoon with sustained winds of 130 mph with stronger gusts.

<p>By Thursday morning, Hurricane Hilary was located 530 miles (852 kilometres) southwest of Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with maximum sustained winds of 85 miles per hour, with higher gusts—an environment ripe for rapid intensification.</p>

<p>“Rapid strengthening is forecast, and Hilary could become a major hurricane by tonight or early Friday,” the National Hurricane Center (NHC) said recently.</p>

<p>As it continues to move in a west-northwest direction, Hilary is forecast to become a major Category 4 hurricane by late Thursday night or early Friday morning, US-based The Weather Channel reported.</p>

<p>But if it makes landfall in the US, the weather forecasters expect the hurricane to weaken.</p>

<p>However, heavy rains are projected, especially in California, where several months’ worth of rain could fall in just one or two days, potentially causing flash flooding.</p>

<p>And by Saturday and Sunday, the hurricane is expected to rapidly weaken as it moves over colder waters.</p>

Maui wildfire: People jump into ocean to escape flames and smoke - VIDEO

<p>Shortly after making landfall on Florida's east coast with a mix of powerful winds and heavy rains, Hurricane Nicole deteriorated into a tropical storm on Thursday, according to the National Weather Service.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Six weeks after the last significant hurricane, Nicole had threatened coastal regions that were still in shambles.&nbsp;</p>

<p>At the Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, where NASA's new moon rocket was left out in the elements and anchored to its launch pad to weather the storm, a hurricane warning had been issued for a 240-mile coastline area.</p>

<p>As Nicole travelled inland from Florida's coast on Thursday, it was reduced from a Category 1 hurricane to a tropical storm.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The National Hurricane Centre reported that the storm, which made landfall along the east coast of Florida north of Miami at 3 a.m. EST, was packing sustained winds of up to 75 mph (120 kph). Later, the speeds decreased to 70 mph.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The hurricane centre had issued storm-surge advisories for a large portion of Florida's Atlantic coast, advising that wind-driven waves would rush inland and flood low-lying communities far from the coastline.</p>

<p>When Hurricane Ian made landfall on September 28 and ploughed across the Florida Peninsula to the Atlantic, leaving an estimated $60 billion in damage and killing more than 140 people, storm surges wreaked havoc throughout the state's Gulf Coast and its eastern seaboard.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Nicole was anticipated to be less powerful when it made an impact than Ian, which made landfall in Florida as a major Category 4 storm. Authorities cautioned, however, that Nicole remained a serious threat, particularly to the buildings and coastline foundations that Ian had weakened.</p>

At the Kennedy Space Centre in Cape Canaveral, where NASA's new moon rocket was left out in the elements and anchored to its launch pad to weather the storm, a hurricane warning had been issued for a 240-mile coastline area. As Nicole travelled inland from Florida's coast on Thursday, it was reduced from a Category 1 hurricane to a tropical storm. The National Hurricane Centre reported that the storm, which made landfall along the east coast of Florida north of Miami at 3 a.m. EST, was packing sustained winds of up to 75 mph (120 kph). Later, the speeds decreased to 70 mph. The hurricane centre had issued storm-surge advisories for a large portion of Florida's Atlantic coast, advising that wind-driven waves would rush inland and flood low-lying communities far from the coastline. Nicole was anticipated to be less powerful when it made an impact than Ian, which made landfall in Florida as a major Category 4 storm.
