Jones was traveling with his wife and her mother and was already in the process of moving from Johnson City to Boiling Springs when Hurricane Helene made landfall. The original plan was for them to drive to Johnson City on Friday so he could walk his daughter down the aisle by 11 am on Saturday.

"I had no cell phone service, no internet or anything like that, so I had no idea the extent of the devastation that lay ahead," Jones said.&nbsp;

He added that he has lived in Tennessee for 42 years and did not expect the&nbsp;degree of destruction caused by the storm.

Despite the debris and "quicksand-like" mud ahead of him, he got through the wreckage and back on the Interstate. Jonas, eventually, travelled 26.82 miles, which included 10 by car and about 17 by foot.

He said that the entire experience was a "full circle moment" that ended with Jones, his daughter and their family hugging and shedding tears.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to 85 miles (137 kilometers) per hour with higher gusts, as the storm moves north at 12 mph.

"Strengthening is forecast, and Helene is expected to be a major hurricane when it reaches the Florida Big Bend coast Thursday evening," the NHC added.

The storm now has the potential to roar ashore as an intensely powerful Category 4 hurricane, on the five-level Saffir-Simpson scale, potentially with sustained winds of 130 miles per hour, the center said.

"A catastrophic and deadly storm surge is likely along portions of the Florida Big Bend coast, where inundation could reach as high as 20 feet (six meters) above ground level, along with destructive waves," according to the NHC.

The storm also has potential to "penetrate well inland," it added. Several states are in the warning cone, and Atlanta, a Georgia metropolis hundreds of miles from the Gulf Coast and whose region is home to five million people, is forecast to experience close to tropical storm-force winds and heavy rain into Friday.

President Joe Biden was briefed on the storm Wednesday. "The entire Biden-Harris Administration stands ready to provide further assistance to Florida, and other states in the path of the storm, as needed," the White House said in a statement.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has issued a state of emergency for nearly all of Florida's 67 counties, including Miami-Dade. He has mobilized the National Guard and positioned thousands of personnel to prepare for possible search and rescue operations and power restoration.

The storm could bring "extraordinary" rainfall to parts of Guerrero and Oaxaca, in excess of 250 mm (10 inches), said national water commission Conagua, which forecast more than 150 mm (6 inches) to drench the southernmost state of Chiapas.

The Miami-based hurricane centre&nbsp;warned that the storm could bring life-threatening storm surges and flash flooding before moving inland over southern Mexico on Tuesday and weakening rapidly over the region's high terrain.

In the typically laid-back surfer getaway of Puerto Escondido, Oaxaca, residents hurried on Monday to tow in boats and put away beach chairs.

Hurricane Debby slams into Florida; 3,000 National Guard personnel on standby

Tropical storm Debby formed late Saturday (Aug 3) and was expected to surge up into a hurricane before it slams into Florida’s northern Gulf Coast shoreline on Monday, the National Hurricane Center said.

The storm turned into a tropical storm after days of spinning as a broad, sloppy system in the Atlantic, finally shoving off Cuba’s northern coast on Saturday evening, when it was about 100 miles west-southwest of Key West, Florida, forecasters said.

“It’s become clearer and clearer that Debby will become a hurricane before it makes landfall,” said Jamie Rhome, the deputy director of the NHC, urging people to heed evacuation orders.

The storm was crawling at 14 mph (23 kph) into the Gulf Coast about 240 miles (386 km) south of Tampa, where its winds were expected to grow from 40 mph up to 70 mph or more as it gains strength overnight.

“This is a life threatening situation,” the NHC said in a late Saturday report.

Debby was already whipping up rain squalls, winds of 40 mph and surging tides in Key West, Florida on Saturday night.

“There are a host of hazards, not just the wind,” Rhome said.

He warned of storm surges up to 7 feet (2 m) along Florida’s Big Bend area where it is expected to hit just southeast of Florida’s Panhandle.

“Now, I stand at six feet tall,” Rhome said. “So that’s over my head,” he said.

He added that heavy rains of 10 inches (25 cm) with spots of 15 inches of rain could be expected, more if the storm slows down or stalls over land.

Debby is expected to cut across Central Florida out to the Atlantic coast and crawl up to Savannah, Georgia, and then toward Charleston, South Carolina.

Ocean surges are forecast for Bonita Beach northward to Tampa Bay. Those surges could send sea waves further inland than normal, damaging structures and endangering anyone in their path.
