The police in the Philippines rescued hundreds of people from a scam centre where they were forced to pose as lovers online.

The police claimed that they conducted the raid on the centre&nbsp;on Thursday (Mar 14) and rescued 383 Filipinos, 202 Chinese and 73 other foreign nationals.

They added that the centre, which is located around 100km north of Manila, was posing as an online gambling firm.

The raid, which was carried out near Manila, took place after the police received a tip-off from a Vietnamese man who was able to escape from the scam centre last month.

The man, who was in his 30s, reached the Philippines in January after he was offered a chef's job, said Winston Casio, who is the spokesperson for the Presidential Commission against organised crime.

However, soon the man realised that, like many others, he had been human trafficked for running cryptocurrency and love scams.

The people, who were trapped in the Bamban centre, had to send "sweet nothings" to their victims, a lot of whom were Chinese.&nbsp;

As per Casio, the people would keep a tab on their targets and ask them about their day and questions like what they ate in their last meal. The men and women would also share their photographs with the targets for cultivating relationships.

Casio added that the people running the scam centres trapped "good-looking men and women to lure [victims]".

Australian state to pay $243 million for withdrawing as 2026 Commonwealth Games host

United States President Joe Biden is set to host India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi on June 22 when the latter will be on an official state visit to Washington, announced the White House on Wednesday.

"President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden will host Prime Minister Narendra Modi of the Republic of India for an Official State Visit to the United States, which will include a state dinner, on June 22, 2023. The upcoming visit will affirm the deep and close partnership between the United States and India and the warm bonds of family and friendship that link Americans and Indians together, " announced Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre in a statement.

"The visit will strengthen our two countries’ shared commitment to a free, open, prosperous, and secure Indo-Pacific and our shared resolve to elevate our strategic technology partnership, including in defence, clean energy, and space. The leaders will discuss ways to further expand our educational exchanges and people-to-people ties, as well as our work together to confront common challenges from climate change, to workforce development and health security," the statement further read.&nbsp;

Tibetan spiritual guru Dalai Lama on Friday attended the Global Buddhist Summit, a two-day event hosted by India in collaboration with the International Buddhist Confederation (IBS) on 20 and 21 April. &nbsp;Dalai Lama spoke for a length of about thirty minutes to a group of monks and other delegates who had assembled here on day 2 of the gathering, according to PTI news agency citing sources.

In his address, the spiritual guru highlighted the ideals and philosophy of Buddhism. ''In his nearly half-an-hour address, the Tibetan spiritual leader spoke of compassion, wisdom and meditation,'' a source told PTI.

Dalai Lama said that these are three ideals which are central to the philosophy and teachings of Lord Buddha. There was no confirmation of the Dalai Lama's visit. He was issued an invitation to the event, organisers said on Monday during a news conference. However, it had not been determined if he would attend.

On Thursday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke at the opening session of the groundbreaking summit.

PM Modi during his address mentioned the challenges posed by the present times. His address figured concerns including war, climate change, economic instability, terrorism and religious extremism.

There are two parts to the summit. One is academic session and the other one is Sangha session. The inaugural session was open for the media to attend however, the second session was not.&nbsp;

Early on Friday morning, a government-in-exile official from the Central Tibetan Administration, also known as the CTA, informed PTI that "His Holiness will attend the event." The conference is being hosted at The Ashok Hotel in New Delhi.&nbsp;

A party thrown on New Year’s Eve went awry wrong after the host accidentally shot at a guest and then died of a heart attack in Karnataka. Manjunath Olekar, aged 67, was making preparations to fire celebratory shots using his gun during the party in his house in Shivamogga city on Saturday.

The host misfired the gun and his guest Vinay U, aged 34, was hit by the bullet. An investigation has been initiated by the police into the incident.

The police officials stated that Olekar, who owned a licensed gun, had allegedly used it in the last few years to mark the new year’s arrival.

Shivamogga’s police superintendent GK Mithun Kumar said that at the party, the gun was being loaded by Olekar when he "accidentally pressed the trigger" and shot Vinay, who was a friend of his son.

"A firearm can be used only in certain circumstances. Not to fire in the air to celebrate," said the police official. The people rushed Vinay to the hospital after he was shot but he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday evening.

Lindsey Vonn, the greatest women's skier of all-time, will be the host of the 2022 Laureus Awards Show in the picturesque Spanish city of Seville on Sunday, April 24, when the winners of this year's Laureus World Sports Awards are revealed.

First staged in 2000, the Laureus Awards celebrates the greatest achievements of individuals and teams across all sports.

The winners are chosen by the votes of the 71 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy: the greatest sportsmen and women of today being saluted by the most illustrious legends of the past.

Lindsey Vonn was honoured by the Laureus Academy in 2019 when she was presented with the Laureus Spirit of Sport Award to mark the end of her remarkable career.

In 2021 she became a member of the Laureus Academy.

"When I received the Laureus Spirit of Sport Award on my retirement in 2019, I remember saying I was sad to be leaving my sport but I was looking forward to the next chapter of my life and doing something incredible. That's exactly how I feel now to be the host for the 2022 Laureus World Sports Awards in the beautiful city of Seville. This is going to be an incredible night for myself and for all the winners of these very special awards," said Lindsey Vonn as per an official release.

"I know how emotional and uplifting it is to receive a Laureus Award and it's going to be so exciting to be part of the awards show in Seville. Although we can't host the nominees and winners in person this year, I have seen all the preparations for the virtual event. It's going to be a wonderful evening," she added.

In her career, Lindsey won four Overall World Cups - one of only three female skiers to do so - and a record eight World Cup Downhill titles.

In 2016, she won her 20th World Cup title, the overall record for men or women, surpassing Ingemar Stenmark of Sweden.

Her total of 82 World Cup race victories is a women's record. She was a winner in all five Alpine skiing disciplines.

She won the downhill gold medal at the Winter Olympics in 2010, where she also won bronze in the super-g, which led to her receiving the 2011 Laureus World Sportswoman of the Year Award.

Despite breaking her right arm three months before and also suffering a back injury, she won a bronze in the downhill at the 2018 Winter Olympics.

The Laureus Awards, which reflects sporting achievement during 2021, is the premier honours event on the international sporting calendar. The winners, in a variety of different categories, will be revealed in a 'virtual'&nbsp;format as a result of continuing uncertainty over the COVID pandemic.

UEFA has received declarations of interest from Britain and Ireland, Russia and Turkey to host the European Championship in 2028, the governing body said on Wednesday.

Australia's Victoria state has been granted an exclusive negotiating period to secure hosting rights for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, officials said on Wednesday.

State capital Melbourne hosted the 2006 Commonwealth Games but premier Daniel Andrews said the 2026 edition would be focused on regional cities if the bid were successful.

"Victoria is Australia's sporting state, and, if awarded, the 2026 Commonwealth Games would demonstrate to the world a new way to deliver the competition," he said.

ASEM is a unique platform that serves to bridge the two continents of Asia and Europe for constructive partnership and exchange, under the three key pillars of political dialogue, economic collaboration and socio-cultural exchanges, the Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement. 
 
The 11th ASEM Summit assumes special importance in view of the fact, that 2016 marks the 20th anniversary of the dialogue forum, officials said.&nbsp;Since the Summit is the first ever international event of such stature that Mongolia is hosting, the participation of Vice President Ansari signifies the importance India attaches to its strategic partnership with Mongolia, they said. 
 
Ansari will also hold bilateral meetings with a few other participating leaders on the sidelines of the Summit.
