Hong Kong gears up for New Year countdown unrest

China's People's Liberation Army (PLA) <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/hong-kong-unrest-police-arrest-15-in-fresh-shopping-mall-protests-270781">Hong Kong garrison</a> carried out air and sea exercises, according to state-run CCTV.

The drills which included emergency deployment, joint force delivery and joint patrolling was posted in the military channel, reports said.

The military exercise comes even as Hong Kong has been gripped by months of violence on the streets with protesters demanding more accountability from the government. On Monday, Hong Kong police appealed for an end to violence asserting that citizens were fed up with the social unrest and longed for peace and stability.

"We appeal to the organiser and participants to remain calm and rational. Let us kick start 2020 with peace and get Hong Kong back on the right track," Hong Kong police Public Relations chief, Kwok Ka-Chuen said amid reports of renewed violence in the new year.

Reports indicate Hong is set for multiple protests in the New Year starting Tuesday in several areas including Lan Kwai Fong, Victoria Harbour and in popular shopping malls.

The police have already given permission for a pro-democracy march on January 1. Authorities said they would deploy crowd control patrols while urging citizens to be peaceful.

Police Commissioner Chris Tang said: "If you use violence, you will not get public support. We, police, will do all we can to arrest you."

The police have already arrested several hundred protesters in the past months with no indication of end to the current cycle of violence.

On Sunday, at least one thousand people took part in a rally despite the rains wearing black masks to hide their identities. On Saturday, riot police had arrested several protesters and used pepper spray to break up the gathering as clashes continued in the city.

Hong Kong to celebrate New Year with a fresh wave of protests

Hong Kong police on Monday called for peaceful demonstrations as multiple protests were being planned amid the New Year festivities. Speaking at press conference, Hong Kong police Public Relations chief, Kwok Ka-Chuen said, "It's high time to put an end to violence and restore social order in Hong Kong"

"The year 2019 has almost come to an end, Hong Kong people had a bumpy year where widespread rioting pushed the city to the brink of extreme danger, Hong Kong police Public Relations chief, Kwok said, adding, "I believe most citizens are fed up with these ongoing social unrest and long for peace and stability."

Hong Kong will end 2019 with multiple protests planned for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day aimed at disrupting festivities and shopping in the Asian financial hub, which has seen a rise in clashes between police and protesters since Christmas.

Events dubbed "Suck the Eve" and "Shop with you" are scheduled for New Year's Eve on Tuesday around the city, including in the party district of Lan Kwai Fong, Hong Kong's picturesque Victoria Harbour, and popular shopping malls, according to notices circulated on social media.

A New Year's Day march on January 1, has been given police permission and will start from a large park in bustling Causeway Bay and end in the central business district, say its organisers, the Civil Human Rights Front.

The latest planned protests come after a pick up in clashes since Christmas Eve when riot police fired rounds of tear gas at thousands of protesters, many wearing masks and reindeer antlers, after scuffles in shopping malls and in a prime tourist district.

While the protests - now in their seventh month - have lessened in intensity and size in recent weeks, their frequency has held up, with marches or rallies occurring almost daily in the former British colony.

Hong Kong has been convulsed by more than <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/protesters-target-malls-during-christmas-in-hong-kong-270245">six months of protests</a>, triggered by a now-withdrawn bill that would have allowed extraditions to mainland China, where courts are controlled by the Communist Party.

The demonstrations have since evolved into a broader pro-democracy movement and have again became more confrontational over recent days with police clashing with protesters at several shopping malls and busy tourist areas.

On Saturday, riot police arrested about a dozen protesters and used pepper spray to break up a gathering aimed at disrupting retail business near the border with mainland China.

More protests are planned in the next few days, including a countdown to New Year's Day and a march on Jan. 1 that could attract a big crowd.

More than 1,000 gather for rain-soaked Hong Kong rally

Citing a letter from a young Hong Konger appealing for people "not to believe the Communists", Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen said on Sunday the island's democratic way of life was at risk from the danger China posed to Taiwan.

The months of anti-government protests in Chinese-ruled <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/hong-kong-unrest-police-arrest-15-in-fresh-shopping-mall-protests-270781">Hong Kong</a> have taken centre stage in Taiwan ahead of the January&nbsp;11 presidential and parliamentary elections, with Tsai in particular warning Taiwan would be next if it gives into Chinese pressure and accepts Beijing's rule.

Speaking at a televised presidential debate, Tsai read excerpts from a letter she said she received from a young person in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/hong-kong-police-paid-17-million-in-allowances-related-to-protests-270751">Hong Kong</a>. She did not name the person nor say when the letter was written.

Tsai read from the letter: "'I ask that Taiwan's people not believe the Chinese Communists, don't believe any pro-Communist official, and don't fall into China's money trap.'"

Taiwan's people have been through their own traumas under martial law before adopting democracy and are now seeing "the end of Hong Kong", Tsai quoted the letter as saying.

Tsai said she wanted to read the letter to remind people of the significance of their vote next month.

"On Jan. 11, the vote in our hands can decide whether our democratic way of life of today can continue. The whole world is watching what Taiwan will do on Jan. 11."

China claims Taiwan as its own territory, to be taken under its control by force if needed. Taiwan says it is an independent country called the Republic of China, its formal name.

China says it will run Taiwan under the "one country, two systems" model - the same as used in Hong Kong - granting it a high degree of autonomy.

Tsai and her main opponent Han Kuo-yu from the Kuomintang, which favours close relations with China, have both rejected this model, though Tsai has repeatedly portrayed Han as supporting it.

Han said Tsai was "deceiving" the people of Hong Kong by using their struggle to try and win votes.

"They are bleeding from fighting against China, while you are enjoying electoral gains. Your campaign is based on the blood of Hong Kong people. You are exploiting the values they uphold," he said, citing remarks from a Hong Kong student leader who later apologised for his criticism.

Han also reiterated what has become a frequent complaint, that senior members of Tsai's Democratic Progressive Party and Tsai herself had previously been to China, accusing them of hypocrisy for denouncing a trip he made earlier this year.

"And you slam me for accepting 'one country, two systems' - this is really too much," Han said.

Hong Kong riot police arrested at least 15 people in clashes Saturday with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/hong-kong-police-paid-17-million-in-allowances-related-to-protests-270751">dozens of pro-democracy protestors</a> who <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/protesters-target-malls-during-christmas-in-hong-kong-270245">targeted a mall</a> near the border with China to demonstrate against mainland tourists and shoppers.

The fresh unrest ended a brief calm after protestors had battled riot police in shopping malls and streets of commercial districts across the city for three days over the Christmas period.

On Saturday afternoon, masked plain-clothed officers wielding batons arrested 14 people, including a 14-year-old girl, who were protesting inside the mall in Sheung Shui district, forcing shops to shut and harassing shoppers, an AFP reporter at the scene said.

Riot police charged into the mall to reinforce the officers and used pepper spray to disperse a crowd of residents who gathered to protest against the arrests.

After the police left, some protesters stayed on a footbridge linking the mall to an MTR metro station and harassed passers-by they thought were mainland Chinese tourists.

Another man was arrested by riot police in a later incident inside the mall, his head covered in blood.

Similar protests and clashes also took place in a mall in Kowloon Bay district, where a number of people were arrested Saturday evening.

Blood and a black mask were seen by an AFP reporter on the floor where plain-clothed police subdued protesters in the mall.

In recent years Sheung Shui has been swamped by a huge influx of mainlanders and parallel traders seeking to circumvent Chinese taxes, angering many residents who have seen their local shops transformed to cater to the visitors.

Hong Kong's many malls have become regular protest venues as protesters try to cause economic disruption in their push for greater democratic freedoms and police accountability.

The last month had seen a relative drop-off in violence and protests after pro-democracy candidates won a landslide at local elections.

But with Beijing and city leaders refusing further concessions, rallies and clashes reignited over the Christmas period.

The protests were initially sparked by a now-abandoned attempt to allow extraditions to the authoritarian mainland.

They have since morphed into a popular revolt against Beijing's rule, with spiralling fears that the city is losing some of its unique liberties.

Among the demands being made by protesters is an inquiry into the police, an amnesty for the more than 6,000 people arrested and the right to elect Hong Kong's leader.

Hong Kong unrest: Police arrest 15 in fresh shopping mall protests

Hong Kong police have earned a total of HK$135 million&nbsp;in allowances during the past six months of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/protesters-target-malls-during-christmas-in-hong-kong-270245">anti-government protests</a>, government figures show.

The meal and work-related allowances were on top of HK$950 million overtime pay that police have earned since the protests intensified in June, according to the figures released to city legislators on Friday.

The Chinese-ruled city has been convulsed by more than 900 often violent protests since June, the security bureau said earlier, as public opposition to a now-withdrawn extradition bill developed into demands for greater freedoms.

The protests have regularly featured ranks of riot police firing volleys of tear gas or baton-charging protesters, often in central business or tourist areas. Police, in turn, have been attacked with petrol bombs and other projectiles hurled by protesters, many of them masked.

In a written response to questions from pro-democracy lawmakers, the Civil Service Bureau said HK$50 million in meal allowances had been paid to front-line officers and back-end clerical staff who worked 12 hours or more within a day since the turmoil began.

Another HK$85 million was paid out for work-related allowances, it said. The bureau did not give a breakdown but the allowances could include those paid to police who worked undercover or in plainclothes for 30 days.

There have been widespread complaints from protesters of police misconduct and public satisfaction with a force once held in great respect by the public has fallen to the lowest on record, according to a poll by the Hong Kong Public Opinion Research Institute.

Police loosened guidelines on the use of force in September, giving officers greater power to deal with protesters in difficult situations.

Many protesters are now demanding an independent inquiry into their complaints of police brutality. But police have described their action as restrained with an appropriate use of force to combat illegal acts.

Hong Kong: Christmas Eve protests grip mall

After <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/hong-kong-protests-planned-across-city-during-christmas-week-after-massive-uighur-rally-269745">protests in Hong Kong</a> resumed before Christmas, the riot police fired tear gas at protesters clad in masks and reindeer horns. Malls and prime tourist locations remain the prime places for protesters to organise.

Allegedly, the protesters threw objects like umbrellas at the protesters who then responded by beating the demonstrators.&nbsp;

Reuters reported that one officer had pointed his gun at the crowd, but did not fire.

Christmas festivities have been disrupted due to this fresh wave of protests, with many families being unable to witness the Christmas lights along the promenade in the Tsim Sha Tsui East district of Kowloon, which is famous for tourism.

The protests have been going on for seven months, with multiple instances of violence. However, the agitation has fizzled out over time. Even still, a peaceful rally earlier this month still drew 800,000 people, according to organisers, showing strong support for the movement.

US&nbsp;trade, economic and scientific restrictions on <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/china-slams-pompeo-criticism-of-syria-aid-veto-269763">China and "smears"</a> against its sovereignty are impacting global stability and development, the Chinese government's top diplomat said in comments published on Monday.

Even as the world's two largest economies have taken steps to cool a bitter trade war, they remain far apart on a string of issues including anti-government protests in Hong Kong, Syria, human rights and the status of Chinese-claimed Taiwan.

China has been particularly upset by criticism from senior US&nbsp;officials, including Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, of China's ruling Communist Party and of the country's treatment of its Muslim Uighur minority.

The United States says it is determined to speak out about human rights abuses in China, re-balance what it sees as a mismatched trade relationship and stop potential national security threats with restrictions on Chinese companies such as tech giant Huawei.

In a year-end interview with state media, State Councillor Wang Yi said this year marking 40 years of ties between the People's Republic of China and the United States should have been an important anniversary for both to mark.

"Regrettably, the United States has successively imposed restrictions and put pressure on China in various fields such as economy, trade, science and technology, and on a series of issues concerning China's territorial sovereignty has interfered and smeared (us)," Wang said.

"What the United States has done has undermined <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-north-korea-talks-more-important-than-anything-south-korea-tells-china-269749">Sino-US&nbsp;mutual trust</a> accumulated over the past 40 years and has also impacted the stability and development of the entire world," he added, in excerpts of the interview carried on the Chinese Foreign Ministry's website.

Wang said China would safeguard its core interests and right to legitimate development, and no person or force can stop the 1.4 billion Chinese people from the path of modernisation.

China wants to resolve problems that arise with the United States through dialogue and on the basis of mutual respect, he added.

US 'smears' impacting global stability: China

Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe recently said that <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/hong-kong-protests-planned-across-city-during-christmas-week-after-massive-uighur-rally-269745">Hong Kong</a> should ''continue to be free and open''. The Japanese PM recently met Chinese President Xi Jinping before attending a trilateral meeting, which will also be attended by the South Korean president Moon Jae-in.

In a press briefing after the Xi-Abe meeting, Otaka Masato, spokesman for the Japanese minister of foreign affairs, said Abe "urged China to continue its self-restraint" over Hong Kong and expressed "hope for an early resolution of the situation".

The two leaders also discussed North Korea and the denuclearisation of the Korean peninsula, the spokesman said, and Xi "asked for support" for a joint China-Russia draft UN resolution which proposed easing sanctions against the nuclear-armed state.&nbsp;

"Mr Abe reiterated that he is very much concerned about the situation...(and) mentioned that under the 'one country, two systems', Hong Kong should continue to be free and open and to be able to enjoy its development," said Otaka.

Instances of police brutality have been causing a major uproar, with many demanding an independent investigation into it. The police have consistently denied using excessive force.

Earlier on Sunday, more than 1,000 people rallied in support of China's ethnic Uighur Muslims, who have been detained en masse in camps in China's northwestern Xinjiang region.

Beijing and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/were-next-hong-kongers-rally-for-chinas-uighurs-269572">Hong Kong's government</a> have made clear any call for independence would never be tolerated.

"Advocating Hong Kong independence ... is not conducive to the overall and long term interest of Hong Kong society. It is also contrary to the established basic policies of the People's Republic of China regarding Hong Kong," the city government said in a statement overnight.

The protests, which are now running into its six month, have become less violent and organised. Since June this year, more than 6,000 people have been arrested.

According to the Japanese spokesman, Xi replied to Abe's comments on Hong Kong by repeating China's position that Hong Kong "is a domestic matter".

Beijing and Hong Kong's government have made clear any call for independence would never be tolerated.

Hong Kong: Police arrest man who shot at officers, seize guns

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/hong-kong-police-arrest-man-who-at-officers-seize-guns-269548">Hong Kong</a> pro-democracy protesters rallied in solidarity with China's Uighurs on Sunday in a move likely to infuriate Beijing as they likened their plight to that of the oppressed Muslim minority.

The rally was broken up when riot police swooped in after some protesters removed a Chinese flag from a nearby government building.

China has faced international condemnation for rounding up an estimated one million Uighurs and other mostly Muslim ethnic minorities in internment camps in the northwestern region of Xinjiang.

The emergence of a huge surveillance and prison system that now blankets much of Xinjiang has been watched closely in Hong Kong which has been convulsed by six months of huge and sometimes violent protests against Beijing's rule.

Pro-Uighur chants and flags have become commonplace in Hong Kong's marches but Sunday's rally was the first to be specifically dedicated to Uighurs.

Around 1,000 people gathered in a square close to the city's harbourfront listening to speeches warning that the Chinese Communist Party's crackdown in Xinjiang could one day be replicated in Hong Kong.

"We shall not forget those who share a common goal with us, our struggle for freedom and democracy and the rage against the Chinese Communist Party," one speaker shouted through the loudspeaker to cheers from the crowd.

Many of those attending were waving the flag of "East Turkestan", the term many Uighur separatists use for Xinjiang, which has a white crescent moon on a blue background.

Others wore blue face masks with the East Turkestan flag on it. &nbsp;

Many Hong Kongers fear an increasingly assertive China is already eroding those freedoms, especially since Xi Jinping became president.

Many at Sunday's rally said they felt a mainland style government is around the corner.

"The Chinese government are control freaks, they can't stand any opinions they disagree with," Katherine, a protester in her late twenties and a civil servant, told AFP before police moved in.

"In Xinjiang they are doing what they are doing because they have the power to do so. When they take over Hong Kong they will do the same," she added.

'We're next': Hong Kongers rally for China's Uighurs

Hong Kong riot police swept into several shopping malls on Saturday, chasing off and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/hong-kong-police-say-suspect-fired-shot-during-protest-related-arrest-269472">arresting some anti-government Hong Kong demonstrators</a> who had gathered to press their demands in the peak shopping weekend before Christmas.

In a mall in Yuen Long, close to the China border, hundreds of black-clad protesters marked the five-month anniversary of an attack in a train station by an armed mob wearing white T-shirts which beat up bystanders and protesters with pipes and poles.

Police have been criticised for not responding quickly enough to calls for help, and for not arresting any alleged culprits at the scene. They later made several arrests and said the assailants had links to organised criminal gangs, or triads.

The protesters demanded justice for the attack, shouting "Fight for Freedom" and "Stand With Hong Kong".

"The government didn't do anything so far after 5 months ... I deserve an answer, an explanation," said a 30-year-old clerk surnamed Law.

"Yuen Long is no longer a safe place ... and we all live in white terror when we worry if we will be beaten up when dressed in black."

As dozens of riot police stormed into the mall to chase protesters off, a sushi restaurant had its window smashed and shops were forced to close.

Protests in Hong Kong are now in their seventh month, albeit in a relative lull. Residents are angry at what they see as China's meddling in the city's freedoms guaranteed under the "one country, two systems" formula when it returned to Chinese rule in 1997.

Many are also outraged by perceived police brutality, and are demanding an independent investigation into allegations of excessive force. Other demands include the release of all arrested demonstrators and full democracy.

On Friday night, police arrested a man who fired a single shot with a pistol at plain clothes officers in the northern Tai Po district. No one was injured.

A search of a nearby flat revealed a cache of weaponry including a semi-automatic rifle and bullets. Steve Li, a senior police officer on the scene, told reporters the police had information that the suspect planned to use the pistol during a protest to "cause chaos and to hurt police officers."

In Tsim Sha Tsui on Saturday, groups of protesters also converged on a mall popular with mainland Chinese luxury shoppers.

"We can't celebrate Christmas when our city is taken over by the police. When you see the police outside the mall, do you feel like shopping for presents?" said Bob, 17, a protester.

Hong Kong unrest: Protesters face off with police in mall protests

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/wont-allow-foreign-forces-to-interfere-in-hong-kong-macau-chinese-president-xi-269413">Hong Kong</a> police on Saturday said an armed suspect fired a live round at officers as they tried to arrest him in an operation linked to the months of pro-democracy protests engulfing the city.

Police said a 19-year-old man pulled a semi-automatic pistol from his waistband as officers approached him in Tai Po district on Friday evening.

The shot did not hit anyone and the man was subdued.

A subsequent search of a nearby flat uncovered an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle and more than 250 rounds of ammunition.

Police said they believed the man and the newly discovered weapons were linked to a group arrested earlier this month who were also allegedly found in possession of a pistol and were plotting to attack officers.

"The firearms we discovered matched the intelligence we had collected which indicated that some people hoped to use firearms in some public assemblies to wound some others, including police officers on duty," Senior Superintendent Lee Kwai-wah told reporters on Saturday.

However, Lee said the suspect was also facing ongoing firearms charges from an arrest last year before the protests.

Riot police had to be called in to back up the officers as local residents began heckling police, with at least two tear gas rounds fired to disperse them, the South China Morning Post reported.

Semi-autonomous Hong Kong has been shaken for six months by increasingly violent pro-democracy protests.

They were initially sparked by a now-abandoned attempt to allow extraditions to the authoritarian mainland but have since morphed into a popular revolt against Beijing's rule, with spiralling fears that the city is losing some of its unique liberties.

Millions have marched peacefully in multiple rallies, with Beijing and local leader Carrie Lam digging their heels in.

But a newly radicalised youth armed with petrol bombs, bricks and sometimes bows and arrows has added a dangerous layer to the movement, leading to increasingly violent battles with riot police.

Over the last six months, police have fired more than 16,000 rounds of tear gas and 10,000 rubber bullets. Some 6,000 people have been arrested, with 1,000 charged, a large chunk of them students.

In recent weeks, police have made arrests indicating some protesters may be plotting more drastic action.

Alongside the arrest earlier this month of a group of people in possession of a pistol, police said they also discovered two homemade nail bombs that had been stored in the grounds of a school.

Both Lam and the Hong Kong police force's reputation have taken a hammering during the protests but Beijing has publicly backed both.

The South China Morning Post published a new poll on Sunday which found 73 percent of respondents felt the police's handling of the protest had eroded trust in the force.

Among the demands being made by protesters is an independent inquiry into the police, amnesty for those arrested and fully free elections.

In the last month, the frequency of protests has declined as well as the level of violence after pro-democracy candidates won a landslide at local elections.

But Lam and Beijing have given no sign of budging.&nbsp;

Hong Kong police say suspect fired shot during protest-related arrest

President Xi Jinping on Friday said reiterated his stance over foreign interference in its special region, Macau and Hong Kong as he said that it is "entirely China's internal affairs".

Speaking at the ceremony marking the 20th anniversary of Macau's handover to Chinese rule, Xi said, "dealing with these two Special Administrative Regions' (Macau, Hong Kong) affairs is entirely China's internal affairs and none of the business of foreign forces.

"I must emphasise, since Hong Kong and Macau’s return to the motherland, dealing with these two Special Administrative Regions' affairs is entirely China's internal affairs and none of the business of foreign forces," Xi said.

"We do not let any external forces interfere."

Macau returned to Chinese rule on December 20, 1999, with the same "one country, two systems" formula aimed at ensuring a high degree of autonomy under which Hong Kong is governed.

While protesters in Hong Kong, across the mouth of the Pearl River, are furious about what they see as Beijing's erosion of their freedoms, Macau has seen little dissent.

Beijing denies undermining Hong Kong's autonomy and has repeatedly blamed foreign governments, including the United States and Britain, for stirring up trouble in the financial hub.

Xi swore in new Macau chief executive Ho Iat-seng and his administration, which will run the enclave of several islands for the next five years.

Under a large Chinese flag and a smaller Macau one, Xi shook hands with Ho, who was selected in August by a largely pro-Beijing committee in a similar process to the way Hong Kong's leader is chosen.

The&nbsp;Swiss&nbsp;competition&nbsp;watchdog&nbsp;on Thursday restricted&nbsp;Swatch&nbsp;Group's&nbsp;shipments&nbsp;of&nbsp;watch&nbsp;mechanisms to other companies ahead of a final decision in mid-2020 in a long-running dispute.

The world's biggest&nbsp;watchmaker is also an important supplier of&nbsp;watch&nbsp;movements that power mechanical timepieces. If it cannot sell them,&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/science-tech/swatch-to-launch-swiss-smartwatch-operating-system-by-2018-13489">Swatch</a>&nbsp;itself and its customers, from Cartier maker Richemont to independently owned Chopard and Breitling, may face problems.

Anti-trust agency WEKO said deliveries of&nbsp;watch&nbsp;movements to&nbsp;Swatch&nbsp;Group's existing customers would be suspended from January&nbsp;1, with an exception for small and mid-sized companies of up to 250 staff, until the&nbsp;watchdog&nbsp;reaches a final decision.

The decision creates uncertainty over supplies at a time when&nbsp;Swiss&nbsp;watchmakers face&nbsp;competition&nbsp;from smartwatches and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/business-economy/business-activity-in-hong-kong-shrinks-the-most-in-21-years-pmi-266073">slowing demand</a> in key market Hong Kong.&nbsp;Swiss&nbsp;watch&nbsp;export data on Thursday showed&nbsp;shipments&nbsp;to Hong Kong fell 27 per cent&nbsp;in November.

Swatch&nbsp;shares were indicated 1.1 per cent&nbsp;lower in pre-market trade.

A&nbsp;Swatch&nbsp;Group spokesman said the lion's share of the&nbsp;watch&nbsp;movements sold by&nbsp;Swatch's ETA unit was absorbed by companies with more than 250 staff and the group expected not to be able to deliver any&nbsp;movements to third parties next year.

WEKO Director Patrik Ducrey said&nbsp;Swatch&nbsp;Group was still allowed to supply smaller customers, but had to treat them all equally.

"Is there really going to be a shortage of&nbsp;watch&nbsp;movements? I'm not sure. There's also a grey market and brands have built inventories," he told our sources.

Swatch&nbsp;Group had said on Wednesday that it could seek damages.

The question of how to end&nbsp;Swatch&nbsp;Group's historical quasi-monopoly on mechanical&nbsp;watch&nbsp;movements has kept the&nbsp;competition&nbsp;authority busy for years.

WEKO and&nbsp;Swatch&nbsp;struck a deal in 2013 under which the company known for high-end Omega and colourful plastic&nbsp;watches agreed to gradually phase out&nbsp;movement&nbsp;supplies to the rest of the industry by the end of 2019 and would have been free to choose its customers and prices from 2020.

Swatch&nbsp;itself had initiated the change at the time, saying it no longer wanted to serve as a "supermarket" for other brands, but had to keep supplying rivals for several years because of its dominant market position.

Privately owned Sellita has since emerged as the main alternative supplier.&nbsp;Swatch&nbsp;Group said in its statement on Wednesday Sellita would benefit from WEKO's decision.

Sellita and <a href="https://www.wionews.com/entertainment/french-luxury-giant-lvmh-in-talks-to-take-over-us-jewellers-tiffany-258600/amp">Richemont </a>could not immediately be reached for comment.

The Swiss competition watchdog on Thursday restricted Swatch Group's shipments of watch mechanisms to other companies ahead of a final decision in mid-2020 in a long-running dispute. The world's biggest watchmaker is also an important supplier of watch movements that power mechanical timepieces. If it cannot sell them, Swatch itself and its customers, from Cartier maker Richemont to independently owned Chopard and Breitling, may face problems. Anti-trust agency WEKO said deliveries of watch movements to Swatch Group's existing customers would be suspended from January 1, with an exception for small and mid-sized companies of up to 250 staff, until the watchdog reaches a final decision. The decision creates uncertainty over supplies at a time when Swiss watchmakers face competition from smartwatches and slowing demand in key market Hong Kong. Swiss watch export data on Thursday showed shipments to Hong Kong fell 27 per cent in November. Swatch shares were indicated 1.1 per cent lower in pre-market trade. A Swatch Group spokesman said the lion's share of the watch movements sold by Swatch's ETA unit was absorbed by companies with more than 250 staff and the group expected not to be able to deliver any movements to third parties next year.
