Tibet might be splitting apart as the Indian tectonic plate's upper part is tearing and warping because of constant collision, suggests a new study.

A recent study presented at the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union showed that the geology underneath the Himalayas, the world's highest mountain range, might be more complicated than previously believed.

The Himalayas continue to grow as the two tectonic plates, the Indian and Eurasian, keep colliding under them. The outcome of the collision of an oceanic and continental plate is known to geoscientists. However, the outcome is hard to anticipate when two continental plates collide, as both have similar densities.

When the oceanic plate is denser, it slides under the lighter continental plate in a process known as subduction. Some geoscientists believe the Indian plate might be sliding under the Eurasian in a process known as underplating, in which one continental plate slides under the other without diving deeply into the mantle.

However, many others think that the inner parts of the Indian plate are subducting, and the upper parts are cramming up against the bulk of Tibet.

According to the new research, the Indian plate is subducting. However, while doing so, it is also bending and tearing, and its upper half is peeling away like the lid off a tin can.

The researchers investigated earthquake waves travelling through the crust where the two plates collide. Using these waves, they created images showing slashes in the slabs of the Indian plates' crust.

While the bottom of the Indian plate is 124 miles (200 kilometres) deep in some places, it is only 62 miles (100 kilometres) in others, reported Science Magazine. It suggests that some of the Indian plate has peeled away.

Covid-era lockdown temporarily slowed down glacier melting in Himalayas: Study

A surprising phenomenon has emerged in the mighty Himalayas that might slow down the effects of the global climate crisis. Scientists have noted that when high temperatures hit high-altitude ice masses, ‘katabatic’ winds are triggered that blow cold air to lower-altitude areas.

The study, published in the journal Nature Geoscience, was conducted using data from the Pyramid International Laboratory/Observatory climate station on Mount Everest, the world’s tallest summit.

What are katabatic winds?

According to Francesca Pellicciotti, professor of glaciology at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria and lead author of the study, a temperature gap is created between the air flowing above the mountains and the cooler air directly in contact with ice masses.

“This leads to an increase in turbulent heat exchange at the glacier’s surface and stronger cooling of the surface air mass,” she said.

As the warm air gets cooler and denser, it sinks, triggering the katabatic winds in neighbouring areas down the slope.

The incident occurred when a tunnel collapsed on November 12 as part of the Char Dham all-weather road project. The National Disaster Response Force and State Disaster Response Force promptly intervened, working tirelessly to evacuate the workers. CM Dhami announced the completion of pipe laying, indicating imminent rescue. Despite challenges like debris obstruction and breakdowns, the teams persevered, passing essential items and communicating with workers via a six-inch pipeline. Anti-depressants and a variety of foods were provided. The use of an endoscopic camera facilitated communication with trapped workers. When the auger machine broke down, vertical and manual drilling methods were employed. A medical team of 15, including chest specialists, and 12 ambulances were on standby. Prime Minister Modi closely monitored the situation, regularly speaking with CM Dhami and ensuring worker safety inside and outside the tunnel. The successful rescue marked a significant relief, highlighting the coordinated efforts and commitment of all involved parties. (With inputs from agencies)

Over the past 50 years, at least 564 people lost their lives due to avalanches while climbing peaks above 4,500 metres (14,770ft) in the Himalayas, as per a recent analysis. Capping the data to the 14 peaks above 8,000 metres and a few other major climbing peaks above 6,000 metres in the Himalayas, at least 1,400 people have died during high-altitude mountaineering between the years 1895 and 2022. Out of these 33% of the deaths were because of avalanches.

Global heating worsening the dangers of high-altitude mountaineering, warn experts

A joint team of Indo-Japanese scientists have found traces of an ancient ocean that once existed in the Himalayas around 600 million years ago.

Scientists from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and Niigata University, Japan, have discovered droplets of water trapped in mineral deposits that were likely left behind from the pristine ocean.

After analysing the deposits, which had both calcium and magnesium carbonates, the researchers said that the discovery could provide key insights into a significant oxygenation event in Earth's past.

“These mineral deposits are like time capsule for paleo oceans," Prakash Chandra Arya, a PhD student at the Centre for Earth Sciences (CEaS), IISc, and the research's lead author, said in his study published in Precambrian Research.

Snowball Earth glaciation

According to their thesis, Earth was once covered with thick sheets of ice between 700 and 500 million years ago, known as the Snowball Earth glaciation— one of the major glacial events in Earth's history.

Then it was followed by the Second Great Oxygenation Event, which increased the amount of oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere and led to the evolution of complex life forms.

However, scientists have not fully comprehended how these events were connected due to the lack of well-preserved fossils and the disappearance of all past oceans that existed in the Earth's history.

They believe that exposure of such marine rocks in the Himalayas can offer some clues to the Earth’s past climate.

"We don't know much about past oceans," says Prakash. "How different or similar were they compared to present-day oceans? Were they more acidic or basic, nutrient-rich or deficient, warm or cold, and what was their chemical and isotopic composition?"

“Such insights could also provide clues about the Earth's past climate, and this information can be useful for climate modelling,” he added.

What did they find?

The study states that the deposit found by the team showed that the sedimentary basins were deprived of calcium for a prolonged period of time, probably due to low riverine input.

This lack of calcium led to increased magnesium levels, with the resulting magnesium deposits trapping ancient ocean water as they crystallised.

"During this time, there was no flow in the oceans, and hence no calcium input. When there is no flow or calcium input, as more calcium precipitates, the amount of magnesium goes up," says Sajeev Krishnan, Professor at CEaS and corresponding author of the study.

The study states that calcium deprivation may have caused nutrient deficiency and created favourable conditions for slow-growing photosynthetic cyanobacteria.

These organisms could have begun releasing more oxygen into the atmosphere, contributing to the Second Great Oxygenation Event, their research argues.

Scientists find ancient ocean water in Himalayas, offer insights into Earth’s past

A UK-based think tank has released more evidence of China's military buildup in the Himalayas. The report claims China is building a comprehensive ecosystem to support troop deployments. Molly Gambhir brings you a report.

Gravitas: This is what China is constructing in the Himalayas

Himalayas are turning into a dump. They are filled with plastic waste, abandoned tents, and sanitation pads. In fact, there is waste in Himalayan glaciers too. All of this is because of 'Expedition culture'. What's the story here? Molly Gambhir reports.

Gravitas: Have the Himalayas turned into a dump?

Global warming is surely affecting the only planet we have. We all know this. Words like climate change and global warming make up a sizeable portion of our online news consumption in daily life. But just how much is the extent of these phenomena becomes clear when a research actually quantifies the damage. A research conducted by researchers from UK's University of St Andrews, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Graz University of Technology in Austria, and Carnegie Mellon University has been able to map loss of glacial mass in the Himalayas.

According to a report in Livemint, the researchers have found that Himalayas have lost glacial mass equal to weight of 570 million elephants. The research has been published in the journal Nature Geoscience. The researchers reported that glacial loss from the central Himalayas has been underestimated the most.

"Our estimates reduce uncertainties in total glacier mass loss, provide important data for glacio-hydrological models, and therefore also support the water resources management in this sensitive mountain region," researchers said in the paper.

Satellites can measure the surface of the lake, but are unable to track conversion of ice into water below the lake surface. Researchers say that this is reason behind the underestimation of glacial loss.

The glacial loss described in terms of weight of elephants has occurred in just two decades, reveals the study.
Himalayas have lost glacier mass equal to weight of 570 million elephants: Study

As a massive earthquake struck Afghanistan, Pakistan and India on Tuesday night, people were hit with fresh fears, especially as the memories of the Turkey-Syria quake are still fresh in everyone's minds.
Massive earthquakes with the potential to cause damage in the Himalayan region in the near future were predicted by the National Geophysical Research Institute (NGRI) on February 21. However, he also said that both property loss and death can be averted by building sturdy structures, as reported by ANI.

Dr N Purnachandra Rao, the chief scientist at NGRI, told ANI that the Indian plate is shifting roughly five centimetres each year, which is causing tension to build up along the Himalayas. The Earth's surface is made up of numerous plates that are continuously in motion.

"We have a strong network of 18 seismograph stations in Uttarakhand. The region referred to as the seismic gap between Himachal and the western part of Nepal including Uttarakhand is prone to earthquakes that might occur at any time," added Dr N Purnachandra Rao.

Gravitas: Scientists warn of big earthquake in Himalayas

For the first time in India, a liquid mirror telescope facility atop a mountain in the Himalayan range will keep a watch on the overhead sky to identify transient or variable objects such as supernovae, gravitational lenses, space debris, and asteroids.

It is a first in India and the largest in Asia, said India's Ministry of Science and Technology on Thursday.

The telescope is commissioned at Devasthal, a hill in India's northern state, Uttarakhand, and will help in surveying the sky making it possible to observe several galaxies and other astronomical sources just by staring at the strip of sky that passes overhead.

Built by astronomers from India, Belgium and Canada, the novel instrument employs a 4-meter-diameter rotating mirror made up of a thin film of liquid mercury to collect and focus light, the Indian ministry said.

It is located at an altitude of 2450 meters at the Devasthal Observatory campus of Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), an autonomous institute under the Department of Science and Technology (DST) situated in Nainital district, Uttarakhand.

"The scientists from the three countries spun a pool of mercury which is a reflective liquid, so that the surface curved into a parabolic shape which is ideal for focusing light," the ministry said.

Explaining how the telescope functions, the ministry said that a thin transparent film of mylar protects the mercury from wind.

"The reflected light passes through a sophisticated multi-lens optical corrector that produces sharp images over a wide field of view. A large-format electronic camera located at the focus records the images," it said.

Professor Paul Hickson (University of British Columbia, Canada), an expert on liquid mirror technology, said that "the rotation of the earth causes the images to drift across the camera, but this motion is compensated electronically by the camera. This mode of operation increases observing efficiency and makes the telescope particularly sensitive to faint and diffuse objects."

Liquid mirror telescope or ILMT is the first such telescope designed exclusively for astronomical observations installed at the Devasthal Observatory of ARIES, said Dipankar Banerjee, Director, ARIES.

Banerjee mentioned that Devasthal Observatory now hosts two four-meter class telescopes – the ILMT and the Devasthal Optical Telescope (DOT).

"Both are the largest aperture telescopes available in the country," he said, adding that he was enthusiastic about the application of Big Data and Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML) algorithms that will be implemented for classifying the objects observed with the ILMT.

"I am hopeful that this project will attract and motivate several young minds from scientific and engineering backgrounds to take up challenging problems," he said.

Project investigator of ILMT, Kuntal Misra said that the wealth of data generated with the ILMT survey will be exemplary.

"In the future, several young researchers will be working on different science programs utilizing the ILMT data," he said.

Scientists said that when regular science operations begin later this year, the ILMT will produce about 10 GB of data every night, which will be quickly analyzed to reveal variable and transient stellar sources.

The 3.6-meter DOT, with the availability of sophisticated back-end instruments, will allow rapid follow-up observations of the newly-detected transient sources with the adjacent ILMT.

"The data collected from ILMT will be ideally suited to perform a deep photometric and astrometric variability survey over a period of typically 5 years,” said Project Director Jean Surdej (University of Liège, Belgium and University of Poznan, Poland).

The ILMT collaboration includes researchers from ARIES in India, the University of Liège and the Royal Observatory of Belgium in Belgium, Poznan Observatory in Poland, the Ulugh Beg Astronomical Institute of the Uzbek Academy of Sciences and National University of Uzbekistan in Uzbekistan, the University of British Columbia, Laval University, the University of Montreal, the University of Toronto, York University and the University of Victoria in Canada.

The telescope was designed and built by the Advanced Mechanical and Optical Systems (AMOS) Corporation and the Centre Spatial de Liège in Belgium.

The Himalayas have one of the world's highest numbers of glaciers. But rising temperatures have been taking a toll on the snow capped mountains in northern India. The retreating glaciers have threatened agriculture, water supply, and tourism. Our next report tells you more.

Rising temperatures take a toll on Himalayas

India is grappling with the Wuhan virus. China is capitalising on India's crisis. It has wrapped up construction of a strategic highway in Tibet. A highway that is very close to the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.

This highway has been under construction for seven years now. China has spent 310 million dollars on this project. It passes though a grand canyon of the river Brahmaputra, on the Tibetan side. This highway will improve China's access to remote areas on the disputed border with Arunachal Pradesh.

And while China picks up arms over India's road construction in Ladakh, it continues to build such strategic assets along the Indian border. This highway is just a small component of China's grand plan for Tibet.

Xi Jinping has ordered a major infrastructure push. It involves building roads, highways, villages and military outposts

Satellite images show that China has built three villages inside Bhutanese territory. The images taken in January 2021 also show a road connecting Tibet to a village out of these three. The village is called Gyala Phug

Two of the three villages are already occupied. As of the first week of May one was under construction.

And these villages have everything. 66 miles of new roads, a small hydro-power station, two communist party administrative centres, a communications base, a disaster relief warehouse, five outposts...they could be military or police.

These villages have everything to serve as a military base. They have security sites, signal towers, a military base and even a satellite receiving station. All of this has been built in the far north of Bhutan.

Chinese Communist Party's secretary for Tibet traveled to meet villagers in Gyala-Phug. He told the villagers to "Raise the bright five-star red flag high". This is reference to the Chinese flag. He is talking about raising the Chinese flag in Bhutan.

China is taking its South China Sea strategy to the Himalayas. It is building structures to claim disputed territory. In the South China Sea, it fortified and armed shoals claimed by Vietnam and the Philippines.

Now, it has built a highway near Arunachal Pradesh and villages in Bhutan. China wants to do more such construction work along the Tibetan border.

China has released a new policy paper on Tibet. It reveals how Beijing has pumped money into construction activity on the border.

Reports from 2019 say China had plans to built 624 "Well off" villages and farms on Tibet's borders. By 2020, china said many of the border villages were better connected to highways. And all such villages have access to mobile communication. So a highway near Arunachal Pradesh and chinese villages in Bhutan.

All this construction activity is China's attempt to unilaterally change facts on the ground. through encroachment and colonisation.

Pandemic or not, China is not backing down. And India needs to watch out.

The images taken in January 2021 also show a road connecting Tibet to a village out of these three. The village is called Gyala Phug Two of the three villages are already occupied.

Forget red and blue (states). The theme of the Biden inauguration was “America United,” and the colour of the day seemed to be purple — the shade that bridges the divide by bringing both colours together (not to mention one of the original signature colours of the suffragists, whose dreams are now being realized with the first female vice president).

“Purple is the colour of loyalty, constancy to purpose, unswerving steadfastness to a cause,” the National Woman’s Party wrote in a newsletter in 1913.

Though Jill Biden coordinated her blue Markarian coat with her husband’s blue Ralph Lauren tie, Vice President Kamala Harris served up a bipartisan message in a bright single-breasted coat and dress from Christopher John Rodgers, as did former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in a grape Ralph Lauren pantsuit. And Michelle Obama, the former first lady, wore wine trousers with a coordinated turtleneck and long coat from Sergio Hudson, a young Black designer.

Masks were also part of the material culture of this inauguration. Jill Biden wore a sky blue mask that appeared custom-made to match her coat, and other members of her family chose a similar monochromatic theme. Harris opted for a shiny black number that complimented her purple outfit, one of her signature mask looks.

Many men opted for paper medical masks, but a few went for solid shades or face coverings that featured insignia. Former President George W. Bush sported a mask made by Rhoback, a company that was started by former Capitol Hill staffers.

Bernie Sanders, not normally known for his style statements, whose choice of accessories may have had the widest effect.
The mittens quickly got their own hashtag: #Berniesmittens. Even Vogue took note. Jen Ellis, a Vermont schoolteacher, claimed ownership in a tweet.

Visiting hill stations in India is a sad affair. I keep on running to them because I saw most of the majestic mountains with my father. The visits evoke powerful childhood memories, but each time I go I end up coming back to Delhi less satisfied and more disturbed.

Even the best of the virgin forests have been ravaged by plastic. The new infrastructure has been built but it ends up obliterating and destroying the history of the place. Be it Dehradun, Mussoorie or any other town which was discovered, settled and built by the British during pre-independent India, has now been ravaged beyond repair.

The crass commercialisation has robbed pristine charm from towns, urban-villages and even remote areas used for adventure tourism. Unlike the West and especially Europe, the older urban settlements are treated with care. The settlements preserve history through architecture and life cycle. There is a heritage value attached to the place. People of the town become the custodian of the place. Even remote cities like Vladivostok in Russia which has seen a massive urban renewal in the last 20 years have preserved monuments related to Czars and older Russia. Even Singapore which has seen massive rebuilding has been able to preserve Little India where tourists spend hours in the end for fun and food.

In India, the opposite seems to have happened. The modern urban incentive for immediate business has destroyed pristine places and finished a sense of ownership of the place. The logic of immediate benefit not only destroys the place but also ends up dislocating local community life in the long run.

The first example which comes to my mind is the small property which I and my brother own in a remote village adjacent to Pangot. The road from the hill station of Pangot ends 2 km after our village into virgin forest. The local developers want the road to reach the plains so that travel time can be cut to avoid travelling to Nanital to reach Haldwani, a trading town nestled on the foothills of Himalayas.

The local developers want this road cut through the dense forest and reach the town built adjacent to Jim Corbett National Park. When I ask, what will happen when trucks will start plying through the bird sanctuary and adjacent reserve forest on which tourist industry is based, the answer is the same. “Yeh bahut door ki baat kar dee.”

Both people and state have failed to create a sense of custodianship of jungles and tourist towns based on nature’s beauty in India. The massive construction in the Himalayas is not only destroying the beauty, but also incurring great ecological damage. In one of the walks I took from a guest house nestled 15 km from Dehradun on a less used road to Mussoorie, I found every corner with a Maggie Point. Comfort food but each shop in the middle of the Saal forest was adjacent to a dump pile. There was no sense of ownership. The lack of it is not limited to the working but also to the rich who have built ugly buildings right inside the reserve areas by bending the rules.

Not one city, from Tawang in the east to Dehradun and Shimla in the West has been able to retain its ethnic style of architecture or build a new one. The colonial structures are either with the government or Army. Rest have withered away.

Not only tourist places in mountains lack architectural style but also a policy which would enable it to have a character. It was heartening to see open defecation free semi-urban villages nestled in remote areas, but they continue to be devoid of garbage management facility.

I have been travelling to the Himalayas from the last 30 years. I have been privileged to have travelled in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh extensively. The modernity has definitely provided the benefit of communication, tourism and better lifestyle but lack of ownership of nature and rampant urbanisation without retaining the character of the place coupled with plastic has destroyed many pristine places.

There is still time to salvage beautiful places, but it would require civic action from people living in urban areas. These urban areas should become agents of change and conservation through poetry, art and public participation apart from just acting as economic engines of the state.

In the absence of the former, the economic engine would also fail because the engine rests on the beauty and grandeur of the Himalayas which we seem to be intent on destroying. We desperately need a new type of urban renewal movement where people take over space from corrupt government and crony capitalists, who for quick money have destroyed many beautiful towns and countryside in the Himalayas.

The village where we have the house passes through Pangot. It is a classic example of urban monstrosity. What should have remained a birders paradise with nature blending architecture has turned into a garish mall which only ends up destroying nature without sustaining the local economy in the long run. None of them provides food outsourced from local communities. None of them re-cycle waste. None of them uses local material for building. None of them uses conservation techniques. And by the end of the day, all of them will end up destroying the edifice on which their business is built.
And by the end of the day, all of them will end up destroying the edifice on which their business is built. The sorry state of Himalayas

Areas around the Himalayan and Mount Everest region are getting greener with the growing of shrubs and grasses, claimed scientists in a new research.

This development raises new concerns of climate change as the Hindu Kush Himalayan region is known for its snow cover.

A team of researchers from UK’s University of Exeter used data from 1993 to 2018 to measure the extent of subnival vegetation, plants growing between the treeline and snowline.

The research noted that the vegetation most grew at the height of 5,000-5,500 metres.
