The US police in Georgia are on a hunt for a man disguised himself as an old lady to rob a bank. Wearing a floral dress, white sneakers, orange latex gloves, a white wig and a dark face mask or neck "gator", the unidentified successfully pulled off the heist. According to CBS46 news TV, the suspect is described as a Black man, around 6 feet tall and slim.

According to the police, the incident took place in Henry County, southeast of Atlanta, on Monday.

The man in disguise arrived at Chase Bank in the city of McDonough carrying a pink bag and armed with a gun. He then reportedly gave a note to a member of staff demanding money, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported citing police.

After taking the money, the man drove off in a small, white SUV that police believe could have been a recent Lexus model. A tag wasn’t spotted.

Photos of the disguised accused were shared on Facebook by McDonough Police Department.

"Based on CCTV recordings and photos taken inside the bank, the department was able to confirm that the suspect was wearing a floral dress, a wig, and a black mask," the department wrote.

Man dressed as elderly woman robs bank in US, police launch manhunt

On Friday, US crypto firm Harmony claimed that hackers stole digital coins worth close to $100 million from one of their key products, reported Reuters. Hackers have targeted the crypto sector for a long time, and this is an addition to the string of cyber heists in the recent past.

The crypto firm builds blockchains for what is referred to as decentralised finance - peer-to-peer sites offering services such as loans without the traditional gatekeepers such as banks and non-fungible tokens.

In a statement, Harmony claimed that it had a global team working tirelessly to address the issue.

Harmony added that the heist hit their Horizon "bridge," which is a tool for transferring crypto between different blockchains. It is also essentially the underlying software that is also used by other digital tokens like bitcoin and ether.

Blockchain bridges are being increasingly targeted, and several crypto firms are experiencing such forms of theft.

According to London-based blockchain analytics firm Elliptic, over $1 billion has been stolen from bridges since the beginning of 2022.

Hackers steal $100 million worth digital coins from US crypto firm Harmony

Can you imagine a thief going to all the trouble and stealing something worth hundreds of millions of dollars, just to sell it for a mere $25?

It is definitely tough to fathom, but this is exactly what happened in Hong Kong.

AFP reports that three burglars successfully carried out the biggest art heist estimated at around USD 637 million (or HK$ 5 billion), but they were oblivious to its true value.

The heist took place in September 2020, when the three burglars targetted Chinese collector Fu Chunxiao's apartment in Hong Kong's Kowloon District.

Chunxiao was travelling overseas at the time of the theft.

Among the pieces of art that were stolen was a two-metre scroll by Mao Zedong, the founder of the People's Republic of China. This scroll by itself was priced at USD 292 million (HK$ 2.3 billion).

The thieves were in the dark about this scroll's real value and sold it to an amateur collector for $25 (HK$ 200).

Police recovered the parchment a month after it was discovered, only to discover that the amateur collector failing to recognise it as genuine had cut it in half so that it can be stored easily.

Oblivious to the heist's value, thieves in Hong Kong sell a $292 million scroll for $25

A diamond thief called Lulu Lakatos, who stole $5 million, has been asked to pay just $340 for executing a heist in the United Kingdom.

The con woman had posed as a gem expert to steal diamonds by swapping them for pebbles from luxury Mayfair jewellers Boodles.

The 60-year-old is serving a five-and-a-half-year sentence after she was found guilty of conspiracy to steal last year over the plot likened to a Hollywood heist movie.

In 2016, CCTV footage from the firm’s basement showed the moment the purse was put into Lakatos’s handbag and switched for a duplicate by an accomplice.

The gems, which included a 20-carat heart-shaped diamond worth more than $4.1 million, were to be kept in a locked bag in the jeweller's vault until payment was made.

When Boodles' diamond expert opened the bag the next day after becoming suspicious, she discovered seven tiny rocks.

After less than three hours of stealing the diamonds, she had fled the UK for France.

Prosecutor Philip Stott said the diamonds had been "stolen by the defendant by sleight of hand".

"The conspiracy in which she is alleged to have played an integral and central part was one of the highest possible sophistication, planning, risk and reward," he told Southwark Crown Court in London.

“As far as the figures are concerned, there is a striking contrast between the benefit figure of £4,299,671 and the available assets of €293.57[£244],” said Judge Alexander Milne QC.

Due to involvement in the plot, Christophe Stankovic and Mickael Jovanovic were jailed for three years and eight months after pleading guilty to conspiracy to steal.

''Anna was most unattractive, she was overweight, she was dressed most extraordinarily, she was wearing the sort of thing a Russian dancer would wear,'' said Boodles chairman Nicholas Wainwright.

He added, ''I was watching her like a hawk,' but said he was distracted by a call from the fake Russian buyer.''

Last September, Lakatos was arrested in France on a European arrest warrant and extradited to the United Kingdom.

Police in Ohio were left with awe and shock when they discovered a dismantled 58-foot bridge that was stolen last month.

Cops said that that they “have not heard of anything that large stolen” ever in their careers.

According to reports, thieves had disassembled a 58-foot bridge installed in a field near a creek in Akron, Ohio.

On November 3, locals found that the treated deck boards on the bridge had been removed. And about a week later, the entire structure was stolen from the area.

Police said the bridge was installed in the early 2000s as part of a restoration project, but the city later decided to use it for another project and kept it in the field for later use.

Although it is not clear why the bridge became the victim of their heist, but police suspect that they wanted to sell it to scraps for money.

But little did they know that the material of the bridge, measuring 10-feet wide and six-feet high, is composed of polymer-based materials, which, the police said, is hard to sell and recycle.

The bizarre incident has left the police baffled who were wondering how the thieves managed to get away with it.

“I have not heard of anything that large — albeit it disassembled but actually stolen, I can’t think of anything comparable in my 22 years [at the Akron Police Department],” Lt. Michael Miller told News 5 Cleveland.

“We know it will be met with mystery and questions: who and how and why? All of those are unanswered. It ranks high on the list of mysteries, that’s for sure,” he added.

The value of the structure is estimated to be about $40,000 by the city’s engineering department.

Grand heist? Police flabbergasted to find stolen 58-foot bridge in US

German police on Tuesday arrested three suspects over a spectacular heist a year ago in which more than a dozen diamond-encrusted items were snatched from a state museum in Dresden.

Investigators were also raiding 18 properties in Berlin, including 10 apartments as well as garages and vehicles, police and prosecutors said in a statement.

"The measures today are focused on the search for the stolen art treasures and possible evidence, such as data storage media, clothing and tools," they said.

In what local media have described as the biggest art heist in modern history, the robbers had launched their brazen raid on Green Vault museum in Dresden's Royal Palace on November 25, 2019.

Having initiated a partial power cut and broken in through a window, they snatched priceless 18th-century jewellery from the collection of the Saxon ruler August the Strong.

Items stolen included a sword whose hilt is encrusted with nine large and 770 smaller diamonds, and a shoulderpiece which contains the famous 49-carat Dresden white diamond, Dresden's Royal Palace had said.

Dramatic CCTV footage released at that time showed one of the robbers breaking into a display case with an axe.

Police hunting for the suspects had launched several appeals, offering up to half a million euros in reward for information leading to their arrests.

On Monday, around 1,600 officers were deployed in the raids and arrests, with special reinforcements called in from across the country to help.

Police did not identify the three arrested, but said they are German citizens.

All three are accused of "serious gang robbery and two counts of arson," said Dresden prosecutors.

Police have found no trace of the Canadian coin since the late-night heist in March 2017 from the Bode Museum, located close to Chancellor Angela Merkel's Berlin apartment.

The "Big Maple Leaf", one of five minted in 2007, is considered the world's second-largest gold coin after the one-tonne Australian Kangaroo issued in 2012.

Robbers also hit a German customs office early November, making off with 6.5 million euros in cash.

Police have offered 100,000 euros in reward for information leading to the arrest and/or conviction of the suspects.

Three arrested over spectacular Dresden museum jewellery heist

A Dubai-based British citizen is alleged to have defrauded the Danish treasury of $2 billion. Sanjay Shah, however, has so far denied wrongdoing.

Despite his denial, the man has never been shy about the source of his wealth. When he bought a $1.3 million yacht a few years ago, he named it ‘Solo’.

Shah had a humble beginning as he was raised by parents of Indian ancestry who had immigrated from Kenya. He dropped out of college in 1992, citing a lack of motivation, and worked at a number of large financial firms. In 2007, he started working at the London office of Rabobank, a Dutch company, on the dividend arbitrage desk where he learned about cum-ex trades.

Shah’s cum-ex tradings resulted in a large-scale defrauding of the treasury — something he had learnt from Britisher Martin Shields and Kiwi Paul Mora, who, along with hundreds of bankers, lawyers and investors, made off with a staggering $60 billion, all of it siphoned from the state coffers of European countries between 2006 and 2011.

This kind of trading is a monetary manoeuvre to avoid double taxation of investment profits that plays out like high finance’s answer to a David Copperfield stage illusion. To be precise, cum-ex trades produced two refunds for dividend tax paid on one basket of stocks.

This was repeated over and over again until it became a cult. Germany was the hardest hit; followed by Spain.

Shah had a major role to play in Germany’s misfortune. No criminal charges were, however, filed against him.

With the financial crisis in full swing, cum-ex was one of the few reliable moneymakers, and the trade boosted careers throughout the City of London.

But when the European sniffed the malpractice being carried out, they launched a probe modelled on the investigations into transactions handled by Bank of America.

Several banks have now been fined (Deutsche Bank, UniCredit), one has apologised (Macquarie), others have pledged cooperation with investigators (Santander, Deutsche Bank) and two are insolvent.

Shah’s fate, by that measure, still hangs by a thin thread. In his defence, however, he maintains the trades were legal, and that the Danish tax systems were incompetent.

British director Steve McQueen opened the BFI London Film Festival on Wednesday with the heist movie 'Widows', kicking off the 12-day event which organisers said this year prides itself on promoting women filmmakers.

At London's central Leicester Square, McQueen was joined on the red carpet by cast members Oscar winner Viola Davis, 'Black Panther' actor Daniel Kaluuya and 'Fast and Furious' regular Michelle Rodriguez.

The thriller, which tells the story of a group of widows planning a heist to pay off a debt left by a crime committed by their dead husbands, is McQueen`s first major feature film since 2013`s Oscar-winning '12 Years a Slave'.

Adapted from a 1980s television series by British crime writer Lynda La Plante, the Chicago-set movie touches on gender, race, politics and crime.

"It would have been disingenuous to not address all those issues because it`s coursing through every fiber of American culture so it should be a part of our story telling," Davis told Reuters.

Davis, who is black, said she felt very excited when she read the script, adding: "It becomes a no-brainer ... I always say if I turned this role down it probably would have gone to a Caucasian actress."

The movie features a strong female cast and other Hollywood names such as Liam Neeson, Robert Duvall and Colin Farrell. McQueen described it as a "rollercoaster ride through our environment".

"People are saying about this picture, `Oh great, they`re making movies with female leads`. In the 30s, 40s and 50s, they used to do it all the time," he said. "They were stars who were icons. Why aren`t they doing it anymore? I don`t know."

Though smaller than its peers in Cannes and Venice, the BFI London Film Festival attracts its own share of glamour with many celebrities promoting their movies.

This year`s event includes the world premieres of World War One film 'They Shall Not Grow Old' by 'Lord of the Rings' director Peter Jackson and 'Stan & Ollie' about the comedy duo Laurel and Hardy.

'The Favourite', starring 'The Crown' actress Olivia Colman and Oscar winners Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz, also features, as does Keira Knightley`s latest period drama 'Colette'.

Organisers said the spotlight would also shine on women filmmakers.

"This year (we`re) really proud of the fact that 38 per cent of the films in the festival are from female directors or female co-directors," festival artistic director Tricia Tuttle said. "It`s been really important to us to find and champion female filmmakers."
