Officials told the Associated Press that three deaths had been confirmed so far after a house collapsed.

Christine Monquele, head of the civil protection agency in Grand’Anse, told news agency AFP, “They are members of the same family and were killed when their house collapsed.”&nbsp;Additionally, the agency also confirmed that some 28 people have been injured and that the search for “other possible casualties” is underway.

A World Food Programme official in Jeremie told the AP that things fell around his house after the earthquake, on Tuesday.&nbsp;“I thought the whole house was going to fall on top of me,” said Eric Mpitabakana, which has prompted him and his colleagues to contemplate sleeping outdoors in case of aftershocks.

"The government, with support from the international community, must do its utmost to comply with its obligation to provide people with regular and unimpeded access to clean water, food, health and shelter," he said.

UN's quarterly update for the months of January to March found that in the nation, violence was "becoming more extreme and more frequent (and) spreading relentlessly as gangs seek to extend their control".

Citing the report which was released on Tuesday (May 9th) the UN high commissioner's office said: "In the month of April alone, more than 600 people were killed in a new wave of extreme violence that hit several districts across the capital."&nbsp;

"This follows the killing of at least 846 people in the first three months of 2023, in addition to 393 injured and 395 kidnapped during that period — a 28-per cent increase in violence on the previous quarter."

As per Turk's office, the areas that were previously considered safe were now affected.

Gangs are reportedly using snipers to "indiscriminately" shoot people in the streets and are also "firing into homes".

Furthermore, people were "being burned alive on public transport," but authorities do not have the "capacity to respond," forcing civilians to form vigilante groups to fight the gangs.

UN sounds alarm over 'new wave of extreme violence' in Haiti; 600 killed in April

Residents in Haiti's capital city Port-au-Prince lynched and set fire to over a dozen suspected gang members on Monday (April 24), according to police and witnesses. In a statement, the police said that during a search of a minibus in which there were armed individuals, the police confiscated weapons and other equipment. Dozens of families left neighbourhoods with men, women, and children fleeing, carrying a few personal belongings in bags or bundles

Speaking to AFP, a resident of Turgeau said, "It was the sound of projectiles that woke us up this morning. It was 3:00 am, and the gangs invaded us. There were shots, shots."

The police have not specified the exact number of suspected gang members killed in the violence.&nbsp;

The United Nations warned on Monday that insecurity in Port-au-Prince has reached levels similar to countries at war. Earlier in the day, the UN released a report highlighting the surge in murders and kidnappings in Haiti.

The report said that armed gangs "continued to compete to expand their territorial control throughout the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area, spreading to previously unaffected neighbourhoods."

"With the high number of fatalities and increasing areas under the control of armed gangs, insecurity in the capital has reached levels comparable to countries in armed conflict," the report said.&nbsp;

It added that the citizens of Haiti continued to suffer one of the worst human rights crises in decades and a major humanitarian emergency.&nbsp;

Monday's lynching comes after days of confrontations between gang members and security agents. In recent months, the security situation in Haiti has deteriorated further with routine gun fights between the gangs and police.&nbsp;

The UN further said in its report on Monday&nbsp;that clashes among gangs and with police became more violent and frequent, claiming many civilian lives.&nbsp;

"Clashes between gangs are becoming more violent and more frequent, as they try to expand their territorial control throughout the capital and other regions by targeting people living in areas controlled by rivals," the United Nations spokeswoman Marta Hurtado said.

This year, up to March 15, "531 people were killed, 300 injured and 277 kidnapped in gang-related incidents that took place mainly in the capital, Port-au-Prince," she told reporters in Geneva.

In the first two weeks of March alone, gang clashes left at least 208 dead, 164 injured and 101 kidnapped, Hurtado said.

"Most of the victims were killed or injured by snipers who were reportedly randomly shooting at people in their homes or on the streets," she added.

Across Haiti, students and teachers have been frequently hit by stray bullets, with social media chatter from the region claiming many to have been caught in the crossfire between security forces and a group of gangsters. Kidnappings of parents and young children around schools have increased, due to which many schools have been forced to close.

Without the protective school environment, "many children have been forcibly recruited by armed gangs", Hurtado said.

<h2>Haiti turmoil: Why is it worsening?</h2>

Haiti is among the poorest of nations in the Americas. The country has been under the grip of an increasingly worsening political and economic crisis since the assassination of President Jovonel Moise. Various armed groups now control more than half of the country, reports say.

The chronic instability and violence have sent food prices surging, and half the population does not have enough to eat, the United Nations said.

At least 160,000 people have been displaced and are living in precarious circumstances, with a quarter living in makeshift settlements with limited access to basic sanitation, she added.

Lambert who is the current president of the Senate and Latortue, who is the former president of the Senate in Haiti, are accused of using the status of their public office to “protect and enable the illegal activities” of armed gang members through “money laundering and other acts of corruption.”&nbsp;

The imposition would entail freezing any assets they may hold in Canada as well as the US and are aimed at stopping the flow of “illicit funds and weapons to weaken and disable criminal gangs.” The statement has also warned about further sanctions and other measures against individuals and entities responsible for the ongoing violence in Haiti.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, the US Department of the Treasury in a separate statement said that these sanctions are being placed against the two Haitian politicians for “having engaged in, or attempted to engage in, activities or transactions that have materially contributed to, or pose a significant risk of materially contributing to, the international proliferation of illicit drugs or their means of production.”&nbsp;

Treasury Department official, Brian E. Nelson, said, “Joseph Lambert and Youri Latortue have abused their official positions to traffic drugs and collaborated with criminal and gang networks to undermine the rule of law in Haiti.” The statement added, Lambert has held political positions for nearly two decades while Latortue is also a longtime politician.&nbsp;

Furthermore, the countries have alleged the aforementioned armed gangs terrorize vulnerable populations and commit “unspeakable violence” in Haiti. This includes widespread sexual violence and impeding the delivery of critical services which are bringing about a “humanitarian crisis” in the country.&nbsp;

Dozens of patients sat on white buckets or lay on stretchers as IV lines ran up to bags of rehydrating fluids that gleamed in the sun. So far this month, Doctors Without Borders has treated some 1,800 patients at their four centers in Port-au-Prince.

Across <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/haiti-government-has-asked-for-international-assistance-heres-why-525085">Haiti</a>, many patients are dying because say they’re unable to reach a hospital in time, health officials say. A spike in gang violence has made it unsafe for people to leave their communities and a lack of fuel has shut down public transportation, gas stations and other key businesses including water supply companies.

Enfant sat next to her son’s body as she recalled how Joliva told her he was feeling sick earlier this week. She had already warned him and her two other sons not to bathe or wash clothes in the sewage-contaminated waters that ran through a nearby ravine in their neighborhood — the only source of water for hundreds in that area.

Enfant insisted that her sons buy water to wash clothes and add chlorine if they were going to drink it. As Joliva grew sicker, Enfant tried to care for him on her own.

“I told him, ‘Honey, you need to drink the tea,’” she recalled. “He said again, ‘I feel weak.’ He also said, ‘I am not able to stand up.’”

Cholera is a bacteria that sickens people who swallow contaminated food or water, and it can cause severe vomiting and diarrhea, in some cases leading to death.

Haiti’s first major brush with cholera occurred more than a decade ago when UN&nbsp;peacekeepers introduced the bacteria into the country’s biggest river via sewage runoff at their base. Nearly 10,000 people died and thousands of others were sickened.

The cases eventually dwindled to the point where the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/what-is-the-origin-of-the-covid-19-virus-new-report-supports-lab-leak-theory-529062">World Health Organization</a> was expected to declare Haiti cholera-free this year.

But on Oct. 2, Haitian officials announced that cholera had returned.

At least 40 deaths and 1,700 suspected cases have been reported, but officials believe the numbers are much higher, especially in crowded and unsanitary slums and government shelters where thousands of Haitians live.

Worsening the situation is a lack of fuel and water that began to dwindle last month when one of Haiti’s most powerful gangs surrounded a key fuel terminal and demanded the resignation of Prime Minister Ariel Henry. Gas stations and businesses including water companies have closed, forcing an increasing number of people to rely on untreated water.

Shela Jeune, a 21-year-old hot dog vendor whose 2-year-old son has cholera, said she buys small bags of water for her family but doesn’t know if it’s treated. She carried him to the hospital where he remains on IV fluids.

“Everything I give him to eat, he just throws it up,” she said.

Jeune was among dozens of mothers seeking treatment for their children on a recent morning.

Lauriol Chantal, 43, recounted a similar story. Her 15-year-old son would vomit as soon as he finished eating, prompting her to rush him to the treatment center.

While at the center, her son, Alexandro François, told her he felt hot.

“He said to me ... ’Mama, could you take me outside to wash me or pour water over my head?’” she said.

She obliged, but suddenly, he collapsed in her arms. The staff ran over to help.

Children younger than age 14 make up half of cholera cases in Haiti, according to UNICEF, with officials warning that growing cases of severe malnutrition also make children more vulnerable to illness.

Haiti’s poverty also has worsened the situation.

“When you are unable to get safe drinking water by tap in your own home, when you don’t have soap or water purifying tablets and you have no access to health services, you may not survive cholera or other waterborne diseases,” said Bruno Maes, Haiti’s UNICEF representative.

Perpety Juste, a 62-year-old grandmother, said one of her three grandchildren became ill this week as she fretted about how their situation might have led to her sickness.

“We spent a lot of days without food, I cannot lie,” she said. “Nobody in my house has a job.”

Juste, who lives with her husband, five children and three grandchildren, said she used to work as a house cleaner until the homeowners fled Haiti.

The increasing demand for help is squeezing Doctors Without Borders and others as they struggle to care for patients with limited fuel.

“It’s a nightmare for the population, and also for us,” said Jean-Marc Biquet, a project coordinator with the organization. “We have two more weeks of fuel.”

Life is paralyzed for many Haitians, including Enfant, as she mourned her son’s death. She wants to bury him in her southern coastal hometown of Les Cayes, but cannot afford the 55,000 gourdes ($430) it would cost to transport his body.

Enfant then fell quiet and gazed into the distance as she continued to sit next to her son’s body — too stunned, she said, to stand up.

UN&nbsp;Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said Haitians faced a dramatic emergency and that there was a need for "armed" intervention to help local police open up the port to create a humanitarian corridor for delivery of aid.

"It's an absolutely nightmarish situation for the population of Haiti, especially Port-au-Prince," Guterres said before the Security Council met.

"I'm talking of something to be done based on strict humanitarian criteria, independent of the political dimensions of the problem that needs to be solved by the Haitians themselves," Guterres said.

Haiti asked United Nations for help last week to reopen Varreux oil terminal. The terminal was seized by gangs in mid-September.&nbsp;

"I have the delicate mission of bringing before the Security Council the cry of distress of an entire suffering people and to say out loud and intelligible that the Haitians do not live, they survive," Haiti's foreign minister, Jean Victor Geneus, told the council on Monday.&nbsp;

The United States and Mexico were preparing two resolutions for the council to address the request.

US Ambassador to the UN Linda Thomas-Greenfield said one resolution would authorize a non-UN international security assistance mission to improve security and enable humanitarian aid to flow into Haiti.

She said the proposal was for "a limited, carefully scoped, non-UN mission" to be led by "a partner country" with experience in such operations.

Once decided, Washington would "consider the most effective means to directly support, enable, and resource" the mission, she said.

China had some reservations about sending an armed force to Haiti

"At a time when the Haitian government lacks legitimacy, and is unable to govern, will sending such a rapid action force to Haiti receive the understanding support and cooperation from the parties in Haiti, or will it face resistance or even trigger violent confrontation from the population?" asked China's deputy permanent representative to the UN

Russian UN envoy Dmitry Polyanskiy said it would be "unacceptable" to support "external interference in the political processes in Haiti" that would subsume Haiti's interests "to the interests of world-known regional players who view the American continent as their backyard."

Fuel crises as well as food shortages have become quite common in recent months and doctors believe that the situation is getting worse due to the lack of proper water.&nbsp;

According to the latest data published by the UN, around 150 people have been affected till now, and added that “three-fourths of major hospitals across Haiti were unable to provide critical service". The report also said that patients have not experienced proper conditions in several hospitals.&nbsp;

This comes amid the island nation facing two weeks of violence and looting of millions of dollars worth of humanitarian aid.&nbsp;

“An economic crisis, a gang crisis, and a political crisis have converged into a humanitarian catastrophe. We must not lose hope, but rather combine our efforts to find a pathway to a better tomorrow,” said UN Special Representative Helen La Lime.&nbsp;

The country has been amid widespread looting and protest since September 11 when the incumbent Prime Minister Ariel Henry announced a hike in fuel prices and a reduction of $400 million in fuel subsidies.&nbsp;

The looting has caused the loss of at least $6 million worth of relief assistance, including 2,000 tons of food, which would have supported up to 200,000 “most vulnerable Haitians” over the next month, said Helen La Lime. However, prior to the civil unrest, at least 4.9 million Haitians were in need of humanitarian assistance. This loss also comes amid hurricane season in the region.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, gang violence has continued to disrupt daily life and cause at least 20,000 people to flee from their homes. The UN envoy speaking from the capital Port-au-Prince said, “the first necessary step to address the current crisis. To support Haitians in their effort towards a better future, this Council must take urgent action.”&nbsp;

She also indicated that the Varreux fuel terminal has been a “stage of siege” in Port-au-Prince as it has been blocked by one of the largest gang alliances for over a week now. According to the UN, the economic crisis caused food prices to soar, while fuel is only available on the black market.&nbsp;

The situation is worsening with fuel shortages that have nearly stopped the country’s functioning and even forced some hospitals to shut down, said the UN envoy. On the political front, La Lime said that their efforts have led to a “perceived stalemate”, however, the national stakeholders are trying again with a “renewed sense of urgency”.&nbsp;

“In the past weeks, Government representatives, political groups, and civil society organizations launched new consultations on ways to forge a wider consensus on a path to elections. But we’re not there yet,” said the UN envoy.&nbsp;

The country’s foreign minister Jean Victor Geneus, who was also present at the council, said that fuel shortages have forced Haiti’s largest industrial park, Caracol, to shut which would lead to the loss of 12,000 jobs. He added that private companies in the island nation are expected to leave by Monday and they don’t know if the schools can be reopened after they have already postponed them till October 3.&nbsp;

Furthermore, this insecurity has made it “very difficult and dangerous” to supply humanitarian aid, said WFP deputy executive director, Valerie N. Guarnieri. She added, “We expect food security to further deteriorate this year, surpassing the record high of 4.5 million people estimated to face crisis or worse levels of acute food insecurity, including 1.3 million people in emergency.”&nbsp;

Guarnieri also went on to urge increased support from the member nations to facilitate humanitarian access to Haiti while also calling for the protection of “humanitarian actors, personnel and assets.”

Two Haitian journalists were shot dead and set ablaze while reporting in an improvised neighbourhood of Cite Soleil which is controlled by gangs in the capital city, Port-au-Prince. The incident took place on Sunday which is the second such killing in the past year, indicated the journalists’ association and local media.&nbsp;

The two journalists, later identified as Tayson Latigue and Frantzsen Charles, were among a group of seven journalists who were investigating the increase in gang violence in the area and the recent killing of a 17-year-old girl, said a statement by Haiti’s Association of Independent Journalists.&nbsp;

A reporter with the association, Dieudonne St-Cyr, told the local media&nbsp;that the two journalists were ambushed by two rival gang members which he did not name. He also said that the five other reporters managed to escape unharmed and the bodies of the two journalists have not been recovered.&nbsp;

Tayson Latigue, worked for digital publication Ti Jenn Jounalis, while Frantzsen Charles was a reporter with FS News Haiti. The FS News Haiti released a statement which read, “We announce with great sorrow the death of our journalist and reporter Frantzsen Charles and another colleague. They were killed by bandits while reporting in Cite Soleil. We demand justice for our colleague.”&nbsp;

The organization condemned the incident calling it a “villainous and odious act” and demanded that the government take action against the country’s worsening security, saying these killings are “further proof of the inability of the state to protect lives and property, which is nothing other than a violation of human rights”.

This comes amid a surge of killings and kidnappings, which they have attributed to gang members becoming more powerful following the assassination of Haitian President Jovenel Moïse&nbsp;on July 7, 2021. Reports also suggest that the rival gangs have been fighting for control of territory in and around the capital city. “The journalists were just doing their job,” the group said. “They didn’t commit any crime.”

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry also condemned the killings and said he was “profoundly shocked”. He also took to Twitter and said, “We strongly condemn this barbaric act, while sending our heartfelt thoughts to the families of the victims and their colleagues.” Meanwhile, the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) also indicated that they are looking into the killings of the young journalists, “In 2022, Haiti has become one of the Western Hemisphere's deadliest countries for the press,” a statement released by the group read.&nbsp;

Conservationists have found a native magnolia in Haiti. This species of plant was lost to science for over nine decades. It is after 97 years that the magnolia species has been discovered, the original habitat of which was destroyed due to deforestation. &nbsp;

This species is known for its pure white flowers and uniquely shaped leaves. Originally found in the forest of Morne Colombo and also known as magnolia emarginata, this tree was considered endangered and featured on the International Union for conservation of nature’s red list of threatened species. &nbsp;

With this recent discovery, a new ray of hope has sparked for the conservation of forests in Haiti. Haiti is a Caribbean country and due to a decline in forest space, only 1 % of the country’s original forest remained. In fact, the indigenous plants in the country are now limited to inaccessible mountains or ravines. In such a situation, this rediscovery could help in saving the habitat of the country. &nbsp;

This discovery has instilled hope among scientists that more species can be found and conserved in the area. In fact, the Haiti National Trust has cultivated four other native magnolia types.&nbsp;

According to figures released by the United Nations, more than 200 people have been killed in Haiti's capital, Port-au-Prince, in just 10 days. The reason behind all these killings is said to be gang violence.

The UN said that almost half of those who died were innocent people without ties to the gangs fighting for control of the Cité Soleil neighbourhood.

Residents say they are running out of drinking water and food as deliveries have stopped due to the ongoing shoot-outs.

A local described his life as a "cycle of fear, stress and despair". Gang violence had increased since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse by mercenaries a year ago. However, it has reached shocking levels since a battle erupted on 8th July between two criminal alliances, G9 and G-Pèp.

The UN stated that 209 people were killed between 8th and 17th July, of which 114 were gang members and 95 were innocent civilians. A further 254 people have also sustained gunshot wounds.

A young resident from Brooklyn, the area within the sprawling Cité Soleil neighbourhood where the fighting has worst hit, described how his life had changed.

The young person told the UN that whenever he goes to bed, he wakes up to the sound of gunfire and even if the shooting terrifies him, he tries to use the rhythmic sounds of bullets to sleep, and that's the only way he can survive.

A local also said that even if a friend or family member manages to leave the Cité Soleil, if they don't hear from them during the day, they begin to fear that they have been killed, which adds, even more, worry to the already traumatic life.

About 3,000 people have already fled from the city, and many have nothing to return to after the gangs destroyed or burned their homes. Others do not dare leave their homes due to the fear of being killed.

With food, fuel and water supplies disrupted, the World Food Programme and the UN Children's Fund have started delivering aid directly to the most vulnerable people in Cité Soleil.

The UN said that almost half of those who died were innocent people without ties to the gangs fighting for control of the Cité Soleil neighbourhood. Residents say they are running out of drinking water and food as deliveries have stopped due to the ongoing shoot-outs. A local described his life as a "cycle of fear, stress and despair". Gang violence had increased since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse by mercenaries a year ago. However, it has reached shocking levels since a battle erupted on 8th July between two criminal alliances, G9 and G-Pèp. The UN stated that 209 people were killed between 8th and 17th July, of which 114 were gang members and 95 were innocent civilians. A further 254 people have also sustained gunshot wounds. A young resident from Brooklyn, the area within the sprawling Cité Soleil neighbourhood where the fighting has worst hit, described how his life had changed. The young person told the UN that whenever he goes to bed, he wakes up to the sound of gunfire and even if the shooting terrifies him, he tries to use the rhythmic sounds of bullets to sleep, and that's the only way he can survive. A local also said that even if a friend or family member manages to leave the Cité Soleil, if they don't hear from them during the day, they begin to fear that they have been killed, which adds, even more, worry to the already traumatic life. About 3,000 people have already fled from the city, and many have nothing to return to after the gangs destroyed or burned their homes. Others do not dare leave their homes due to the fear of being killed. With food, fuel and water supplies disrupted, the World Food Programme and the UN Children's Fund have started delivering aid directly to the most vulnerable people in Cité Soleil. At least 17 suspected migrants from Haiti are confirmed after a boat capsized off the coast of The Bahamas, the authorities of both countries revealed.&nbsp;

A statement tweeted by Bahamian Prime Minister Philip Davis read: "Rescue teams recovered 17 bodies from the water -- 15 women, one man and one infant."&nbsp;

Davis further said that the authorities believe they were on a speedboat heading for Miami. It is believed that the vessel capsized in rough seas, the Bahamian PM added.&nbsp;

News agencies have reported that the Bahamas — a group of islands near the coast of the US state of Florida is said to be used used by human smugglers.&nbsp;

It is used as a jumping-off point for the potentially treacherous sea journey for Haitians seeking to reach the United States.&nbsp;

Bahamian Prime Minister's statement also added that another 25 people were rescued and placed in the care of health officials. Search and rescue missions are underway as at least one person is still missing.&nbsp;

On the other hand, a report by Reuters mentioned that Police Commissioner Clayton Fernander said up to 60 people may have been on board and more people were presumed missing.&nbsp;

Two people were taken into custody over the suspected human smuggling operation, the Bahamian authorities stated. Both were from the Bahamas.&nbsp;

Haitian Prime Minister Ariel Henry tweeted: "This new tragedy saddens the entire nation. I call once again for national reconciliation to solve the problems that make our brothers, sisters and children flee from our land."&nbsp;

The initial probe suggested that a speed boat left New Providence, the most populous island in the Bahamian archipelago, around 1:00am (local time) on Sunday. It is believed that the boat capsized in the rough water, 11 kilometres off the coast of the island.&nbsp;

About 60 people were onboard the boat which was believed to be destined for Miami, Florida.&nbsp;

The Caribbean island is embroiled in a bitter feud between rival gangs in the Cité Soleil near the capital Port-au-Prince. According to data by the UN humanitarian affairs coordination office in Haiti, at least 99 people have died and more than 130 injured since last week.

On Saturday, the UN said 234 people were killed or injured by gang violence between July 8 and 12.

The city’s ill-equipped and understaffed police failed to thwart the violence and the residents have been trapped in their homes, unable to go out for even food and water.

Many victims fell to stray bullets as their makeshift houses are made of sheet metal, which offers little resistance. Moreover, ambulances were unable to reach those in need, AFP news agency reported.

"Most of the victims were not directly involved in gangs and were directly targeted by gang elements," UN spokesperson Jeremy Laurence said.

The poorest nation has been unable to contain gang violence that erupted since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse by mercenaries a year ago.

Apart from a spike in bloodshed, Haiti has also been gripped by soaring food prices and fuel shortages.

Hundreds of protesters staged a mass demonstration demanding urgent action to restore the supply of petrol after Haiti's main fuel terminal suspended its operations during a severe wave of gang violence last week.

‘Alarmed’ over Haiti gang violence, UN Security Council bars sale of small arms

Brutal gang violence, fuel shortages and soaring food commodity prices have brought the capital city of Port-au-Prince in Haiti to a halt. According to United Nations estimates, approximately 234 people have lost their lives or got hurt in the violence, with new reports of sexual violence also coming to light.&nbsp;

According to deputy mayor Jean Hislain Frederick, the violence erupted in the Cite Soleil neighbourhood of the city last week (Thursday) when two rival gangs engaged in a bloody battle amongst themselves. Soon, the violence spread around and the entire city was in flames in no time.&nbsp;

According to the humanitarian organisation named Medecins Sans Frontieres, more colloquially known as Doctors Without Borders, thousands of people are trapped without drinking water, food or medical care. The aid organisation has been pleading with the armed groups to spare civilians. The aid outfit is also requesting the gangs&nbsp;to let them reach the isolated neighbourhood of Brooklyn that has been completely disconnected from the mainstream.&nbsp;
