The single-judge bench presided by Justice Rajiv Shakdhar said, "You (Centre) had to approach the court when the film was about to be released. I understand your concern, but an injunction cannot be granted at this stage as the film is already out," the court said.<br />

The bench also issued notices to filmmaker Karan Johar, the co-producers of the film, his banner Dharma Productions, the digital platform, and Flight Lieutenant Gunjan Saxena, after making her a party to the plaint.<br />

The petition filed by the Ministry of Defence sought a permanent injunction `to restrain the defendants from broadcasting, telecasting, and releasing in theatres and/or any other digital/OTT platform or in any platform in any manner whatsoever, the film `Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl` in public domain, privately or otherwise, by any means whatsoever, without the grant of NOC from the Plaintiff (IAF)`.<br />

It also sought the court`s directions for `removal of the film and/or any part or scene thereof from all OTT platforms including Netflix`.<br />
<br />
"The Indian Air Force believes in gender equality and has always ensured a healthy working environment for all its officials, uninfluenced by their gender, caste, region, religion, etc.," the plea said, adding that the IAF has always provided equal opportunities to the meritorious officers.<br />
<br />
During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) Sanjay Jain, representing the Central government and the IAF, said that the motion picture in question has not been shown to the preview committee, nor has any NOC been taken from the IAF.<br />
<br />
He added that the general practice of the signing of an MOU with the IAF has also not been carried out. "This is graver than an ordinary defamation case, this is the question of the Indian forces. Every day this defamation, discouragement is happening to the IAF," the ASG said.<br />

Meanwhile, a separate bench of the High Court had last week directed the authorities to treat the petition, against the film, seeking stay on the streaming of the film alleging that it is portraying a negative image of the Indian Air Force (IAF), as a representation.<br />
<br />
"We hereby direct the concerned respondent authorities to decide the representation of the petitioner in accordance with law, rules, regulations and government policies applicable to the facts of the case, said a division bench of the High Court, presided by Chief Justice DN Patel and Justice Prateek Jalan on August 28.</p>

<p>The court`s direction came in after the counsel appearing for the petitioner submitted that he would be satisfied if the government bodies were directed by the court to consider his representation. The court was hearing a petition filed by the NGO Justice For Rights Foundation through advocate Amit Kumar Sharma.</p>

<p>Remember the days when the role of a heroine's father was limited to marry her off, kidnap or beat up the hero, lock her up or make her realise that her actions are critically scrutinised by society? Well, clearly the '90s was a different era and in 2020, looks like the Hindi film industry is making the audience familiar with a different kind of a patriarch. A father who is vulnerable, soft, and kind towards his daughter; a father who fights with his daughter for her own ambition; a father who is in support of his daughter's every decision and gives her freedom to make her own choices in life; a father who is close to the figure you and I have in the house.</p>

<p><strong>'Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl' and 'Dangal'</strong></p>

<p>After watching Gunjan Saxena recently, I couldn't help but relate to the sensitivity with which the bond between the father and the dreamy daughter was depicted. How being a patriarch, and a part of the rigid defence forces, paved the way for his daughter whose only aim was to fly in the air. Unfortunately, he does see a disappointment in his son, who despite having a feminist role model at home, falls into the pit of patriarchy. He is the wind beneath Gunjan's wings, he never overpowers her narrative or forces her to follow her dreams, but gives a polite nudge in the direction where she wants to be. Just the 'kind motivation' you need.<br />

<p>&nbsp;In comparison, one can say 'Dangal's' Mahavir Singh Phogat's tough feminist walked so that Anup Saxena of 'Gunjan Saxena' could run. Unlike Saxena, Phogat walked a thin line of imposing his ambition on his daughters and thus forcing them to find happiness in a path that he carved and desired for them. He used the trope of the imbibed cultural notion of 'parents know the best' with 'daughters are no less' and gave the perception that appeared like feminism but lacked depth. Nonetheless, what he lacks, was taken up and polished by Anup Saxena.</p>

<p><strong>'Thappad' and 'Kya Kehna'</strong></p>

<p>Another film in 2020 that made headlines for its progressive approach was Anubhav Sinha's 'Thappad', the beautifully crafted film showed a very sentimental father (played brilliantly by Kumud Mishra) standing side-by-side with his daughter as she discovered her worth in a 'happy marriage' after an unfortunate incident. He is the father who would've given his '90s counterpart a heart attack. He is unapologetic, holds the husband responsible and reminds Amrita of building a life which she gave up on her own post-marriage. Again, in no way is he dramatic about what happened, doesn't go and slap the husband for mistreating his daughter or goes to the police to file the complaint. He just gives Amrita space and support, like an adult, to figure out her decision.<br />

<p>Similarly, ‘Kya Kehna's Gulshan Baxi, embodied the character of a somewhat supportive father. Though initially, he does dismiss his unmarried daughter for being pregnant, runs to the boy's house to plead him to accept his daughter and the unborn child and thinks about '<em>samaj kya kahega</em>', but learns to accept his daughter's bold decision eventually, gives her space and comfort and becomes her home during the tumultuous time. He gave an empty structure to 'Thappad's' Sachin Sandhu, which the latter filled with a better conscious and correct approach</p>

<p><strong>'Angrezi Medium' and 'Akele Hum, Akele Tum'</strong></p>

<p>The third film which beautifully embodied the banter-esque relationship between a father and a daughter is the late Irrfan Khan-starrer 'Angrezi Medium'. The heartfelt film sees Tarika Bansal (played by Radhika Madan) dreaming about studying in London and his father Champak Bansal (played by Irrfan Khan) going to great lengths to make his daughter's dream a reality. He sells off his legacy to see her daughter fulfil her dream, his daughter's dream becomes his own and he embodies the image of a sacrificial parent, normally associated with the mothers in Hindi cinema.</p>

<p>Another single dad who sheds the expectations of the society and dedicates his life solely to his child is Rohit Kumar from 'Akele Hum Akele Tum' (played by Aamir Khan). Now calling Rohit a feminist wouldn't be right as he struggles with his wife's decision to leave the family to pursue her dream, but he did shatter the expected mould of a rigid father when he gets down to the nuances of caretaking. Now the term, 'benevolent sexism' is apt for the imagery of fatherhood showcased in the film, where the mere task of being there for his son in absence of his mother is seen as empathy and 'path-breaking' for a father to do. However, considering the time, Rohit did form a loose structure, nurtured, strengthened and taken to a progressive front by Champak Bansal in Angrezi Medium.&nbsp; &nbsp;</p>

<p>While motherhood has been constructed and reconstructed several times in Hindi Cinema, right from the '50s ('Mother India', 'Aradhana' and more), when it comes to father, the deconstruction of the image has always been scattered and rare. Post-2010 has seen films like 'Dil Dhadhkne Do', 'Piku' and more where fathers break the stereotypes essayed by the likes of Alok Nath and Amrish Puri (and no in-betweens). Unlike mothers, the interpretation of fathers' role is often if not only, seemed limited to a child's career or upholding of social expectations. What binds the three father-daughter films released this year is the sentiment of remorse and apologetic approach by the father towards the years of suppression faced by the women of the household. In all three films, fathers at some point tell their daughters about the role of their mothers and how they killed their dreams in order to be the perfect wives and mothers according to the patriarchy. Now, this is no coincidence that all three films have been directed by men and if the men in the director's chair are making a conscious effort to get into the root cause of everyday household patriarchy and aiming to change the system, something good is brewing in the heart of the industry.</p>

<p>Here's an ode to on-screen fathers who resemble our own old men in the house, cheering, supporting and bantering with their daughters and treating them as individuals rather than the custodian of their and their families' '<em>izzat</em> and <em>maryada'.</em></p>

There was no doubt, however, that the women would be treated the same way at work professionally, as IAF trainee pilots, socially as a lady, and one amongst equals everywhere else. No quarters were given, none were expected'', he claims.<br />

And by talking about his other trainees of the cadet, General said, ''Talk to any one of them, and they’ll tell you how far Gunjan Saxena is from the truth''. She has colleagues who avoid eye contact with her, cancel sortes with her and are even scared that she will become a 'sir' from 'madam'. But then she is guided ably by a senior officer (Manav Vij) who takes her under his wings and trains her to become the best in class. Then at home, while she is constantly discouraged by her brother, it's her father who is always giving her the push to pursue her dreams.&nbsp;</p>

<p>'Gunjan Saxena' is also a story of an ambitious daughter and her encouraging father and Janhvi Kapoor and Pankaj Tripathi make for a formidable pair. Kapoor in the lead role delivers a performance that shows her confidence over her craft. She is restraint as the young Gunjan and confident and ambitious as the older version of the character. However, on many occassion, her expressions do not really match up to the scene. In the garb of showing herself as helpless and frustrated, Kapoor adopts a straight face that does not indicate the emotions the character is going through affectively.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Tripathi, on the other hand, is completely a delight to watch. As the encouraging father, he finds multiple ways to convince his family members about Gunjan's ambitious plans. He is such a gifted actor that he manages to uplift even the smallest of the gestures beautifully.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Angad Singh Bedi and Vineet Kumar Singh, who play characters from the other end of the spectrum are convincing in the roles. They are the ones who are constantly discouraging and proving to be a hindrance in Gunjan's journey to becoming a pilot and the two actors deliver well in their respective roles.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The film is nearly 2 hours long and the director packs in a lot of stuff in that duration. How Gunjan got introduced to the idea of becoming a pilot to her early school days as a student who topped her class, to her training in the IAF- A lot is shown in the film. Despite the detailing, the film never appears too stretched.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Shot by the R Dee, the film captures the valleys, (supposed to be Kargil and Dras sector) well. I wish it had got a theatrical release, the war scenes would have looked grand on the big screen. On OTT, the impact of the battle scenes lessens to an extent. It was made for the big screen anyway but had to opt for a digital release due to the pandemic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The film ultimately scores because of its content that effectively highlights the misogyny of the IAF in the 1990s. 'Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl' is also a poignant story of a father and his daughter- both dreamers who refuse to back down.&nbsp;</p>

Sharan Sharma’s film stars Pankaj Tripathi as Gunjan's father, who letx her dream big and achieve sky-high goals, irrespective of what her mother, brother, and society think. The film chronicles the journey of the first Indian woman Air Force officer Gunjan Saxena to enter a war zone. Saxena, who is one of the first female pilots to fly in combat, played an important role in rescuing injured soldiers during the Kargil War in 1999 and was awarded the gallantry Shaurya Vir Award for displaying courage during the war. The movie is been produced by Dharma Productions and Zee Studios and will release on Netflix on August 12. <p>For all Netflix India fans there is good news as the OTT has announced an exciting lineup of originals including big-ticket films like ‘Gunjan Saxena - The Kargil Girl’, ‘Dolly Kitty Aur Chamakte Sitare’, ‘Torbaaz’, ‘Class of ‘83’, ‘Tribhanga’ among many others.</p>

<p>A total of 17 originals were announced by the OTT today which includes six new films and two new series. These pertain to different genres including comedy, light hearted drama, action and more.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The six new additions to Netflix films include - multi-starrer ‘Ludo’, a comedy-drama about four people whose lives collide with each other (featuring Abhishek A. Bachchan, Rajkummar Rao, Aditya Roy Kapur, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Sanya Malhotra, Pankaj Tripathi, and Pearle Maaney); ‘Torbaaz’, a story of transformation (starring Sanjay Dutt); crime thriller ‘Raat Akeli Hai’ (featuring Radhika Apte, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Aditya Srivastava, Tigmanshu Dhulia, Nishant Dahiya, and Shweta Tripathi); ‘Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare’, a drama about two cousins and their quest for freedom (starring Konkona Sensharma and Bhumi Pednekar); romantic comedy ‘Ginny Weds Sunny’ (featuring Yami Gautam, Vikrant Massey) and award-winning animated romance film ‘Bombay Rose’, the first Indian animation film ever selected to open Venice Critics’ Week.</p>
