<p>Goyal posted a video on his Twitter yesterday and captioned it “Tera Time Aayega”. When seen, the video sounds almost like the ‘Gully Boy’ song with same rap theme and rhythm but with changed lyrics. "He is a car mechanic who is also a peddler but there is a lot going on there. He is part of a lot of enterprises but nobody knows exactly what he does. He is very deceptive."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Varma who had to audition for his role said that it was Zoya and Ranveer Singh who helped him to get in the character. "Zoya have me the brief of the character well. She said 'Moeen is a survivor, a rat, can even survive a volcano. He makes things happen for himself but he doesn’t have any place to go to.' That information was very crucial for me."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Varma recalls how Ranveer, with whom he had all his scenes, helped him to improvise in certain scenes. "While rehearsing the scene where the boys are at the Benetton store, my lines were simple. '10 lakh ke liye toh Moeen bhai rap karenga, tum log sab baaju waaju hatt jao’. Ranveer said, 'Moeen should break into a gig- which I thought was a great suggestion. So I went back home, prepared something in my head and came for the shoot- now Moeen doesn’t know a word of English, he doesn’t understand a word of what these guys do but understand the rhythm. I am personally a fan of Snoop Dogg, so I decided to mix his style and deliver the lines with some sound effects like 'Waao waao' and everyone had a good laugh over it- which was eventually captured in the scene" recalls the actor. "I met Murad on the sets every day while we were shooting and not Ranveer Singh. I am not exaggerating about this. I saw the energetic Ranveer only at the wrap party. He was inquisitive, underplayed his role and between the shots remained in character- shy and reserved."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Varma also credits Akhtar for her writing which made each of the characters stand out. "Almost all her films have multiple characters and they are all very well written. You remember every part in all her films. When I read the script of 'Gully Boy', I understood why Moeen is there. I couldn’t have asked for a better film with Zoya really." said Varma in retrospect.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The actor who has featured in critically acclaimed films like 'Monsoon Shootout' and 'Raagdesh' in the past, admits that he is selective when it comes to choosing roles. "I have certain filmmakers in mind with whom I want to work, certain stories that they narrate I want to be a part of. Also, I am not very conventional in the way I appear or the way I think, so I ensure I'm with those people who think on the same level. Rather than going into a genre where people don’t trust me with, want to roles where people have faith in me and my abilities."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The actor though admits that lines between art house and commercial cinema are blurring. "Glad it is happening now, while I am in my primes. I can only be happier. I have grown up on a staple diet of some great cinema from across the world and witnessed some great performances so I’d like to do that. I am playing for the long run. I am here for that. Want to play a really long inning which is why I want to work with the best."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Gully Boy", directed by India's Zoya Akhtar, tells the fictional tale of Murad (Singh), a student who lives in a slum and ends up temporarily substituting for his injured father as chauffeur for a wealthy family.</p>

<p>He discovers a talent for rapping and uses it to vent his anger about poverty and the chasm between rich and poor, writing lines about babies cowering next to skyscrapers and wealthy people's cars being big as poor people's homes.</p>

<p>"This film is something that takes a genre of music that has essentially been underground in India so far and brings it to the mainstream," Singh said.</p>

<p>"I want this to be the beginning of something because I really think Hindustani hip-hop is a revolution. It's more than just music. It's a musical and social revolution," he said.</p>

<p>Singh said he grew up listening to rap music and it "feels amazing" to have recorded five songs for the film's soundtrack.</p>

<p>The coming-of-age film depicts a young man who refuses to accept what his father has taught him - that he cannot afford big dreams and should get a stable office job - and who defies class conventions by secretly dating Safeena (Alia Bhatt), a doctor's daughter.</p>

<p>Safeena is confident and violently attacks potential love rivals while Murad is a more sensitive and reserved character.</p>

<p>"Traditionally our films and gender dynamics are structured very differently," Singh said. "So that's an aspect of our film that we're very proud of."</p>

<p>He said he initially wanted to become an actor to be a virtuous hero with big muscles who beats other men up and stands up for what is right, but Akhtar had brought out a part of him on screen that was usually reserved for his friends and family.</p>

<p>"Zoya kind of very literally and metaphorically peels away all of those layers to kind of tap into a very real, very authentic side of me ... a little bit more quiet, more reserved, more introverted and more internally feeling sensitive, vulnerable," he said.</p>

<p>The movie - shot in Mumbai - features slum dwellers picking through rubbish, abandoned children preparing drugs to earn their keep and homes made from corrugated iron alongside wealthy Indians attending posh parties, modern skyscrapers and a group of camera-wielding British tourists visiting a slum.</p>

<p>It is one of around 400 films screening at this year's Berlinale festival, which runs until Feb. 17.</p>

Among scores of artists that are the face of this change, one international musician with Indian roots is working towards “mixing sounds of the East and West” while putting India on the world map in a genre that is now being explored in the country -- Svetha Yellapragada Rao, popularly known to fans by her stage name, Raja Kumari. Born to Telugu parents, the 32-year-old Los Angeles-based singer-songwriter is an Indian-American musician who says being part of the global music industry is her “calling.” In an exclusive chat with WION at the recently held Serendipity Arts Festival in Goa, Raja Kumari opened up on the vision behind her music, collaborating with international and Indian artists, what she loves to write about in her songs and why rap in India is here to stay! “It's coming from the gully…. <p>Actor Ranveer Singh, who is seen as a street rapper in his upcoming film 'Gully Boy', says he was born to do the coming-of-age musical film.</p>

<p>Ranveer spoke at the trailer launch of&nbsp;'Gully Boy' along with his co-star Alia Bhatt, the film's director Zoya Akhtar and producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani in Mumbai on Wednesday.</p>

<p>In the film, the actor plays the role of a street rapper who dreams big.</p>

<p>In real life, Ranveer Singh has had a brush with rapping himself. He did a bit of rapping in the title track of his second film 'Ladies vs Ricky Bahl'.</p>

<p>"When somebody told me about the script of 'Gully Boy', I told them that it is my film. If any other actor would have been a part of this film instead of me then I would have got burnt with jealousy. I was born to do `Gully Boy` and I knew only I can pull off this character."</p>

<p>Ranveer said the movie is special for him for many reasons. "It's a coming together of too many things that are very dear to me. It has rap, hip-hop music which I loved since I was a kid and it is set in my motherland Mumbai."</p>

<p>While sharing his experience of working with the film's cast and crew, Ranveer said: "Working with Zoya (Akhtar) was an amazing experience. She is really more than a director to me. She is my friend and confidante. She is so special to me in my life as a person more than a director. This film's producer Ritesh is like family to me. We go way back and our parents go way back. Farhan (Akhtar) is a creative force of nature who I have tremendous admiration for. I have been fielding for him to direct me since eight years now. Hopefully, he will consider me someday. I really don't know what to say about Alia (Bhatt). I don't know how she happened to us. We are lucky that we have an actor like Alia Bhatt as a part of our cinema."</p>

<p>When Zoya was asked how she managed to work with Ranveer in the film, she said: "He is a method actor. If he has to rap for a day, then he will rap for the whole day.''</p>

<p>"When I was editing `Dil Dhadkne Do` in 2014, that time my editor Anand Subaya actually showed me a video of an artiste called Naezy who was like 21 years of age and he had put a song called `Aafat`. That`s the first time I saw a real and authentic rap what now is called as Gully Rap. It`s just stuck in my head and from that moment, till now, it`s just took me on a journey to make this film," says Zoya.</p>

<p>'Gully Boy' also features Vijay Raaz, Amruta Subhash and Siddhant Chaturvedi in key roles.</p>
