A new study shows that methane is four times more sensitive to global warming than previously thought, reported The Guardian.

The study justified the rapid growth in methane in recent years and revealed that methane-related global heating could potentially escalate in the future decades unchecked.

Measurements from the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration recorded the growth of this greenhouse gas passing 1,900 parts a billion last year, nearly triple pre-industrial levels and 80 times as potent as carbon dioxide over a 20-year time span.

An earth scientist at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, Simon Redfern, claimed, "What has been particularly puzzling has been the fact that methane emissions have been increasing at even greater rates in the last two years, despite the global pandemic, when anthropogenic sources were assumed to be less significant."

Natural sources such as wetlands contribute to nearly 40% of methane emissions, and on the other hand, anthropogenic sources such as cattle farming, fossil fuel extraction, and landfill sites contribute to 60% of the emissions.

Expanding exploration of oil and natural gas, rising emissions from agriculture and landfill, and rising natural emissions as tropical wetlands warm and Arctic tundra melts are a few among others to be blamed for the rising methane emissions.

Generally, methane is removed from the atmosphere through a reaction with hydroxyl radicals (OH) also present in the atmosphere. However, a slowdown in this chemical reaction can also be an explanation for the rise in methane emissions.

The Guardian quoted Redfern, who said, "The hydroxyl radical has been termed the 'detergent' of the atmosphere because it works to cleanse the atmosphere of harmful trace gases. On average, a carbon monoxide molecule remains in the atmosphere for about three months before it's attacked by a hydroxyl radical, while methane persists for about a decade. So wildfires have a swift impact on using up the hydroxyl 'detergent' and reduce the methane removal."

Redfern and his colleague Chin-Hsien Cheng used four decades of methane measurements to understand the driving force of methane acceleration. They analysed changes in the climate to identify how the availability of hydroxyl radicals influenced the impact of changing climate on methane sources.

The findings of the study have been published in the journal Nature Communications.

The study concluded that global warming is four times more influential in speeding up methane emissions than previously estimated, with increasing temperatures contributing to producing more methane and simultaneously slowing down the removal of methane from the atmosphere.

"It was a really shocking result and highlights that the effects of climate change can be even more extreme and dangerous than we thought. The worry is that climate change may accelerate such risks, feeding back to accelerating atmospheric methane concentrations in a vicious circle," The Guardian quoted Redfern.

Study shows methane is much more sensitive to global heating than previously thought

Prime Minister Mario Draghi has linked the collapse of the country's largest glacier in the Italian Alps, in which at least seven people died, to global warming.

Cautioning that it was not clear how many climbers were caught when the glacier gave way on Sunday, authorities have reported 14 people missing.

According to Maurizio Fugatti, the head of Trento province, ice and rock thundered down Marmoladaat 300 kilometres an hour (185 miles per hour).

The region's Alpine Rescue Service head Giorgio Gajer told the AGI news agency that rescuers used thermal drones to seek the heat from potential survivors.

Following a record-high temperature of 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit) was recorded at the summit of the glacier the disaster struck the largest glacier in the Italian Alps.

Italy: PM Mario Draghi links collapse of country's biggest Alpine glacier to global warming

In another major blow, sharply cutting down President Joe Biden's administration's power to combat climate change the US Supreme Court on Thursday ruled that Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) cannot issue wide limitations on greenhouse gases. Derailing Biden's plans to use the EPA to reduce emissions in order to achieve global climate targets, the court determined that the government's primary environmental agency lacked the authority to impose substantial limits on emissions from coal-fired power plants. These plants produce close to 20 per cent of the electricity used in the US. The judge concluded that while EPA had the authority to regulate specific plants, Congress had not granted it the broad authority to impose restrictions on all electricity-generating facilities.

The coal mining and coal power industries, which had been targeted for strict constraints in 2015 by the administration of then-president Barack Obama in an effort to reduce carbon emissions, gained a huge victory with the 6-3 vote.

It was also a triumph for conservatives who opposed government regulation of the economy.

Global warming is slowly but steadily impacting every part of our lives from extreme heat waves to unseasonal storms and now it's forcing Nepal to move the base camp of mount Everest.

Nepal to move Everest base camp as Khumbu glacier rapidly thinning out

Global warming and increasing human activity have forced Nepal to move the Everest base camp, which has been rapidly melting and thinning.

The camp— which is situated atop Khumbu glacier camp at an altitude of 5,364m—attracted 1,500 people from all over the world last year during the spring trekking season.

Taranath Adhikari, the director general of Nepal’s tourism department, told the BBC that the new base camp is being moved at a lower altitude which does not have year-round ice.

The new camp site for climbers will be situated 200-400m lower than the existing one, the official added.

“We are now preparing for the relocation, and we will soon begin consultation with all stakeholders,” Adhikari was quoted as saying.

The move comes following reports that the Khumbu glacier has been melting at a rapid pace. Experts have raised concern over melting water destabilising the glacier and the emergence of crevasses at the base camp posing problems for climbers.

"It is basically about adapting to the changes we are seeing at the base camp and it has become essential for the sustainability of the mountaineering business itself,” Adhikari said.

Government officials have told the BBC that shifting the camp could occur as soon as 2024.

Regarded as the world’s best-known campsite, the Everest base camp is now at an altitude some 50m lower than it was in 1953 when Tenzing Norgay and Edmund Hillary climbed the world’s highest mountain, according to Nepali Times.

A study by researchers from Leeds University in 2018 showed that the segment close to base camp was thinning at a rate of 1m per year.

Most of the glacier is covered by rocky debris, but there are also areas of exposed ice, called ice cliffs, and it is the melting of the ice cliffs that most destabilises the glacier, one of the researchers, Scott Watson, told the BBC.

"When ice cliffs melt like that, the debris of boulder and rocks that are on the top of the ice cliffs move and fall and then the melting also creates water bodies," he said.

"So we see increased rock falls and movement of melt-water on the surface of the glaciers that can be hazardous."

Heatwave will envelop France between Thursday (June 16) and Saturday (June 18), with temperatures in central parts of the country reaching 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit). A cold air system coming from the Maghreb region is acting like gear, pushing hot air upwards towards France and the Iberian peninsula, Meteo France weather expert Olivier Proust said.

"It's as if a heatstroke enters the country, with temperatures largely surpassing normal levels," he said, showing a map of France with bright red zones in most of the west and the south, stretching into central France.

The high temperatures will also worsen drought, already experienced in the Loire Valley, with riverbeds in towns like Ancenis-Saint-Gereon and Mauges-sur-Loire expanding as water levels drop, and the soil cracking from dryness.

France braces for heatwave in coming days, as temperatures cross 40 degrees Celcius

A study on ‘Exceptional warming over the Barents area’ studying surface air temperature (SAT) data from Global reanalyses points towards maximum warming over the northern Barents area.

Researchers studied the warming over the past 20–40 years based on new available SAT observations and a quality-controlled comprehensive SAT dataset from the northern archipelagos in the Barents Sea.

They identified a statistically significant record-high annual warming of up to 2.7 °C per decade, with a maximum in autumn of up to 4.0 °C per decade. The researchers said the heating in this region was an “early warning” of what could happen across the rest of the Arctic.

As quoted by The Guardian, Prof Michael Mann, from Pennsylvania State University, US, says, “Sea ice loss and warming in the Barents Sea, in particular, have been isolated in previous work as being especially relevant to changes in winter-time atmospheric circulation that are tied to extreme winter weather events.”

“If this mechanism is valid, and there’s some debate over that, then this is yet another way climate change could be increasing certain types of extreme weather events [and which] isn’t well captured by current models,” he added.

In May 2022, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was 50 per cent higher than during the pre-industrial era, reaching levels not seen on Earth for about four million years, the main US climate agency said on Friday.

Global warming caused by humans, particularly through the production of electricity using fossil fuels, transport, the production of cement, or even deforestation, is responsible for the new high, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said.

In May 2022, the concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere was 50 per cent higher than during the pre-industrial era, reaching levels not seen on Earth for about four million years, the main US climate agency said on Friday. Hydrogen is the world's hope against climate change. More and more countries are investing billions of dollars in projects dedicated to Hydrogen energy. Hydrogen can trigger global warming if not handled correctly

Scientists say Hydrogen if leaked into air can accelerate Global Warming

As climate change continues to impact life forms around the world, conservationists are concerned about the dwindling numbers of the North Sea Puffins.

Climate change is real. The excessive use of fossil fuels, deforestation and other issues have led to the rise in the temperature of the Earth. It is in turn leading to melting of glaciers, rise in sea level, etc. The worst sufferers of climate change will be coastal areas as they will face sinking due to the spike in the level of sea water. But can anything be done to stop it? Well, absolutely, the world can actually fight sea level rise. If you are wondering how, keep reading.

Build seawalls

To keep a check on the rise in sea level, seawalls can be constructed in coastal areas to ensure the sea water does not flood it. Although it can get a little expensive, it will be a must in the future. The rise in the temperature of the Earth is continuing and several coastal areas may witness flooding in the coming years. Some Hollywood flicks have already shown a glimpse of how seawalls can stop sea water flooding. Not just this, Japan has already built them in some areas.

Climate change: How can coastal areas survive rise in sea level?

Climate change is real. Our Earth is dying a slow death. Whether one likes it or not, we are responsible for it in one way or the other. Unless we make right amends, nothing is going to change. It is not just about holding marches, discussions or coming up with innovative slogans or getting popular in the world by raising the voice. It is all about actually taking some corrective measures as if things go the way they are currently, we may be the reason for our own downfall. But yes, there is still time to make things right.

For years, the world has been using fossil fuels excessively, resorting to deforestation, killing animals for sport, harming ocean life as we please, etc. In all of these actions, hardly any consideration has been given to any of the ill-effects of these activities.

Due to this, the world is at a stage where the temperature is going to rise above 1.5C soon, glaciers are melting around the world, sea level is rising, deforestation is still continuing, use of fossil fuel is rising, etc. The scientists have already warned the world to make changes or face catastrophe at the end. But we are busy putting in all the resources in fighting our ‘so-called’ enemies. It seems to be high time to realise who is the real enemy.

Climate change: Are we doing our bit for environment?

Climate change has rendered the blistering heatwave that has gripped South Asia in recent days 30 times more likely, according to a report.

The rapid-response report, which quantified the influence of global warming on extreme weather events, said that before the advent of human-caused climate change such an event would occur after roughly 3000 years.

According to the report, the record length of the heatwave, which witnessed power disruptions as temperatures reached the high 40s, indicates that climate-vulnerable countries are racing against the clock to prepare for a climate-addled future.

Friederike Otto, the report's principal author and a scientist at Imperial College London's Grantham Institute, told AFP that global warming of 1.2 degrees Celsius has lowered the so-called return period of extreme heat from 3000 years to once a century.

As the earth warms, the time between deadly waves will become much shorter. "A heatwave like this one would be expected as often as once every five years" if Earth's average surface temperature rises another four-fifths of a degree to 2C above preindustrial levels, found Otto and her team.

A world warmed by two degrees Celsius or a 2C world is an unsettlingly plausible scenario. Even if we were to fulfil existing national commitments to reduce carbon pollution under the Paris Agreement, we would still see a global warming of 2.8 degrees Celsius.

Pakistan and India saw the hottest March-April period on record.

It would take months to calculate the toll of this heatwave in terms of lives lost, economic damage, hospitalisation, lost pay, and so on.

However, among the first visible effects of the heatwave was the transformation of a bountiful wheat crop in India into an agricultural disaster. As a result, the country has blocked the export of millions of tonnes.

This pushed up worldwide prices dramatically in a market already crippled by the hampered exports from war-torn Ukraine.

Global warming made killer heatwaves in India, Pakistan 30 times more likely: Report

Worsening outdoor air pollution and toxic lead poisoning have kept global deaths from environmental contamination at an estimated 9 million per year since 2015 – countering modest progress made in tackling pollution elsewhere, a team of scientists reported Tuesday.

Air pollution from industry processes along with urbanization drove a 7 per cent increase in pollution-related deaths from 2015 to 2019, according to the scientists’ analysis of data on global mortality and pollution levels.

"We're sitting in the stew pot and slowly burning," said Richard Fuller, a study co-author and head of the global nonprofit Pure Earth. But unlike climate change, malaria, or HIV, "we haven't given (environmental pollution) much focus."

An earlier version of the work published in 2017 also estimated the death toll from pollution at roughly 9 million per year — or about one of every six deaths worldwide — and the cost to the global economy at up to $4.6 trillion per year. That puts pollution on par with smoking in terms of global deaths. COVID-19, by comparison, has killed about 6.7 million people globally since the pandemic began.

For their most recent study, published in the online journal Lancet Planetary Health, the authors analyzed 2019 data from the Global Burden of Disease, an ongoing study by the University of Washington that assesses overall pollution exposure and calculates mortality risk.

The new analysis looks more specifically at the causes of pollution – separating traditional contaminants such as indoor smoke or sewage from more modern pollutants, like industrial air pollution and toxic chemicals. Here are some of the key takeaways:

WATER AND INDOOR AIR

Deaths from traditional pollutants are declining globally. But they remain a major problem in Africa and some other developing countries. Tainted water and soil and dirty indoor air put Chad, the Central African Republic and Niger as the three countries with the most pollution-related deaths, according to data adjusted for population.

State programs to cut indoor air pollution and improvements in sanitation have helped to curb death tolls in some places. In Ethiopia and Nigeria, these efforts brought related deaths to drop by two-thirds between 2000 and 2019. Meanwhile, the Indian government in 2016 began offering to replace wood-burning stoves with gas stove connections.

MODERN POLLUTANTS

Deaths caused by exposure to modern pollutants such as heavy metals, agrochemicals and fossil fuel emissions are "just skyrocketing", rising 66% since 2000, said co-author Rachael Kupka, executive director of the New York-based Global Alliance on Health and Pollution.

When it comes to outdoor air pollution, some major capital cities have seen some success, including in Bangkok, China, and Mexico City, the authors said. But in smaller cities, pollution levels continue to climb.

Rising water temperatures and the melting of glaciers and polar icecaps raised China's sea levels to their highest level on record last year, according to the government.

Even though the temperature of China's coastal waters dipped marginally in 2021 compared to the previous year, it was still the third-highest on record and 0.84 degrees Celsius higher than the 1993-2011 average.

The report issued on Saturday warned that increasing sea levels caused by climate change were having a "continuous impact" on coastal development. It further urged authorities to increase monitoring and strengthen early warning and preventive efforts.

Long-term implications of such rises include erosion of coastal ecosystems and the disappearance of tidal flats, while coastal cities face increased flood and salt tide hazards, according to the centre, a research unit of the ministry of natural resources.

Several experts have been urging world leaders to take urgent action to contain global warming to 1.5C for some years. But it seems the calls have fallen on deaf ears.

Warning! Global warming: World likely to breach 1.5C mark between 2022 and 2026, say experts

Climate models are essential tools in climatology as they allow the projection of future warming scenarios, making it easier to identify and analyse probable climate change impacts, a report said.

However, a study has predicted that Arctic rainfall would become dominating in 2060s than in previous decades, another study claimed that by 2100, air pollution from forest fires in western US could triple. The third study has predicted a major extinction of the oceans during the next several millennia. These studies were published last year, relying on future estimates generated by some of the world’s climate models, the 'Science' report said.

Though, the models’ creators admit that many of them have major flaws, forecasting that future will become too hot, too fast. The modelmakers are still adjusting to this reality and researchers who use model forecasts to asses climate change implications are yet to be done. This has resulted in a slew of “faster than predicted” outcomes which threatens to undermine the credibility of climate science.

Last year, the IPCC attempted to address the issues by publishing its first working group report on the physical basis of climate change. Global warming is a problem plaguing the earth with temperatures rising around the planet and this has caused major concerns for life on all terrains. The melting ice caps are already posing a huge threat to life on the planet, and it seems that the marine species are also not safe anymore.

A new research claims that global warming has brought out drastic changes in the oceans and this can result into an unprecedented extinction of marine species. The ocean ecosystems have been undergoing a lot of changes due to climate change and that has impacted marine biological richness.

The study says that with the water levels going up and the temperatures soaring, the level of oxygen in the ocean waters have gone down and this has resulted in the water taking in carbon dioxide from the air.

Thus, the water levels are going up but with not enough oxygen, the environment has become hostile for a number of aquatic animals and the study states that the depletion of oxygen is almost four times of that in 1960s. This has majorly impacted the growth and development of aquatic life.

The study, which was published in science, compared the current situation to the “great dying” – an event which occurred 250 million years ago resulting in the death of 96 per cent of marine creatures.

Global warming can cause worst extinction of marine life in 250 million years, study claims

It is worrying. Humanity’s future is threatened more than ever.

A newly released report by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction, or UNDRR has found that in the last two decades, every year around 350 to 500 medium-to-large scale disasters took place around the globe.

What causes concern is that this is five times more than the average over the previous three decades.

The UN cautioned that humanity is suffering from a "broken perception of risk," which is driving us to engage in activities and behaviours that contribute to climate change and an increase in natural disasters around the world.

It doesn’t end there. As climate changes, disasters caused by drought, severe temperatures, and devastating flooding are projected to become more common in the future.

According to the report, by 2030, the world will experience 560 disasters every year, or 1.5 disasters per day on average.

The reason behind this drastic rise, according to UNDRR can be attributed to a "broken perception of risk based on optimism, underestimation and invincibility".

Humanity, however, continues to ignore the towering risks, “setting humanity on a spiral of self-destruction," warned UN Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed.

This indifference comes at a heavy cost. Over the last decade, disasters have cost around $170 billion per year around the world, according to the report; borne primarily by low-income countries.
