Impact of climate change: How global warming affects us

Within days of record high temperatures in East Antarctica, an ice shelf the size of Rome collapsed completely in East Antarctica.

Scientists report that the Conger ice shelf collapsed around 15 March, it had a surface area of approximately 1,200 square kilometres.

Despite the small size of the Conger ice shelf, Dr Catherine Colello Walker, Earth and planetary scientist said, “it is one of the most significant collapse events anywhere in Antarctica since the early 2000s when the Larsen B ice shelf disintegrated”.

Walker said it won't have significant effects, but it could be a sign of things to come.

Concordia station in East Antarctica, recorded a record temperature of -11.8C on 18 March, about 40C higher than seasonal norms. Temperature records were set as a result of an atmospheric river that trapped heat over the continent.

Walker noted that the Conger ice shelf had been shrinking since the mid-2000s, but it was only slowly diminishing until the start of 2020.

Yet by 4 March, the ice shelf appeared to have lost more than half its surface area as compared with January measurements of approximately 1,200 square kilometres.

Climate Change: Ice shelf the size of Rome collapses in East Antarctica; scientists sound the alarm

Climate scientists are sounding alarm over heatwaves at both the Earth’s poles, saying that such “unprecedented” phenomena could trigger faster and abrupt climate breakdown than previously thought.

The warnings have been issued after some places in Antarctica recorded 40C above normal, while the north pole’s temperature stood at 30C higher than normal, reaching levels normally registered later in the year, The Guardian reported.

The rapid rise in temperatures at the poles is an indication that Earth’s climate systems have been disrupted due to human lifestyles, the UK-based newspaper reported.

Meanwhile, the scientists have labelled the developments as “historic” and “dramatic.

Michael Mann, director of the Earth System Science Centre at Pennsylvania State University, told the newspaper: “The models have done a good job projecting the overall warming, but we’ve argued that extreme events are exceeding model projections. These events drive home the urgency of action.”

Mark Maslin, professor of earth system science at University College London, said he and his colleagues were already shocked by the amount and the level of severity of extreme weather events last year.

“Now we have record temperatures in the Arctic which, for me, show we have entered a new extreme phase of climate change much earlier than we had expected,” he added.

Last year, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change warned of unprecedented warming signals already occurring, resulting in some changes – such as polar melt – that could rapidly become irreversible

The latest unprecedented weather patterns follow a series of alarming heatwaves in 2021, most notably in the US Pacific north-west, where previous records were shattered by several degrees as temperatures climbed close to 50C.

Global warming has been a big concern around the world nowadays. With time, the need to increase the green cover globally has been felt. On this International Day of Forests, let’s learn about the significance of the day.

International Day of Forests: Time to improve global green cover

The world needs to launch a "transformation" to curb global warming, a top researcher behind an upcoming UN report on climate solutions said, adding that it is never to late to act.

In a United Nations assessment in February dubbed an "atlas of human suffering", experts laid out in devastating detail the past, present and future impacts of climate change on people and the planet they depend on.

Science now considers it unequivocal that humans are responsible for this accelerating climatic upheaval, and the next report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), expected in early April, focuses on how we might get ourselves out of the mess we created.

To do that the world must find a way to drastically cut the amount of planet-warming gases pumped into the atmosphere.

"We are talking about the large-scale transformation of all the major systems: energy, transport, infrastructure, buildings, agriculture and food," climate economist Celine Guivarch told AFP.

The war in Ukraine not only shows the world’s "great dependence on fossil fuels", particularly responsible for climate change, but it also could be an opportunity to make the right choices, she said.

"We are at a crossroads and depending on the decisions taken, we can contribute to making the problem of climate change worse or to find answers", said Guivarch.

But to reach carbon neutrality by mid-century, major changes must be started now, said the researcher at the International Centre for Research on the Environment and Development.

That is in part because of the inertia in human systems -- like the time it takes to build new infrastructure -- and natural ones, because CO2 remains in the atmosphere for several centuries.

Never too late

According to the UN, emissions must be slashed almost in half by 2030 to have a hope of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial era, the most ambitious Paris Agreement goal.

But emissions are still on the rise.

Despite the urgency, some still want to do nothing.

"We hardly hear climate-sceptic commentary anymore, but there is this new 'delay discourse'," said Guivarch.

"They recognise that there is climate change and that it is of human origin, but they seek to justify minimal action or no action."

Some suggest waiting for future technological solutions to be deployed in 10, 20 or 30 years.

And people, companies and even nations may argue that since their emissions are dwarfed by bigger polluters, it is useless to take action.

Others shrug at the signs that climate change is ramping up extreme events and say it is too late to do anything about it.

"This is wrong," said Guivarch, adding that every fraction of a degree increases the impacts and multiplies the risks.

So, "it is never too late to act, because all greenhouse gas emissions avoided, stave off impacts and risks".

But she does not minimise the challenges ahead.

To trigger a real economic transformation will require bringing on board "the whole of society, businesses, citizens", while focusing investments on solutions and away from fossil fuels.

While awareness has grown since the Paris deal was signed in 2015 and decision-makers are increasingly embracing the subject, she said there is still a lack of understanding of the "orders of magnitude, the speed and the extent of the transformation that we are talking about".

"Collectively on a global scale, the actions are not up to the challenge," said Guivarch.

Never too late for 'transformational' climate action: UN report

Climate change is getting more severe and intense with each passing year, and it is set to be the norm in the future if the necessary action is not taken, professor Tim Smith said on Tuesday while speaking at WION’s Climate Summit.

Speaking at the event in New Delhi, Smith, professor, Sustainability Research Centre, Australia’s University of the Sunshine Coast, reminded the world about Australia, which has been facing the vagaries of climate.

“In 2010, Australia had flooding issues in Queensland. The property damage bill was US $1.5 billion dollars. In 2019, we had bushfires and the claims for the bushfire was US $2.5 billion. And just a few weeks ago, we had incredibly significant flooding again, and the claims for that will far eclipse the two previous events,” he said.

“So, the climate change impact is getting more intense and severe. These extreme events are going to become ordinary events. So, it is really about exploring the cost of inaction,” he added.

Highlighting the problem of funding climate change, Smith noted that while the North (developed countries) had the wherewithal to mitigate the effects of global warming, the South (developing countries) lacked resources, while weighing on the debate of “who should pay”.

WION Climate Summit | Climate change impacts are getting more severe, says professor Tim Smith

Speaking at the WION’s Climate Summit, European climate pact ambassador, Netherlands, Laura De Vries called on the government across the world to shift their focus on “sustainable investment”, saying that the present level of investment was insufficient to mitigate the effects of climate change.

“So far, we have not invested (enough). For example, in Netherlands, we know we have to invest a certain amount of money for the climate transition. This government’s record is better, but it is still not there. I think that the problem persists globally,” she said while speaking about the importance of commerce of climate.

“The investors do not see the business on sustainable investing yet. We need to make sure that we are investing as much as possible to negate the damages to a minimum,” she added.

She also called for more engagement of youth in the decision-making process with regards to tackling climate change.

“Since our future is affected, we tend to be more long-term thinking, we are creative and invested in climate crisis. We are more interested in this because it about our future, our children and grandchildren. And because of that, it is really important to involve us. The challenges we are facing right now, and the solutions we are taking, it has to be more climate-proof. So, all the solutions we are thinking of right now, it should suit the future,” De Vries asserted.

She, however, was quick to add that the decision-making process should be more inclusive and that the people from different sections of the society, especially the indigenous communities, must be involved.

“It is not only about the future generations, but it is also about inclusivity. So, I think, apart from the youth, people from marginalised communities, tribal communities etc., should also be involved. Also, it is really important to learn from each other. Take for example indigenous communities. They know how to preserve the earth’s biodiversity. It’s just a waste of resources by not learning from them,” she added.

WION Climate Summit | Governments not focusing enough on sustainable investment, says Laura De Vries

Climate Change is real and scientists along with activists have been saying that we are not doing enough to save the only planet we have. For many of us, the situation is tricky as they want to join the fight to save planet Earth but they don't know how or where to start. This study may help them start on their journey to save our home.

The study has been carried out by Leeds University and the data for the study has been analysed by experts at Arup, a global engineering firm and C40 group of world cities.

The study has found that adopting six behavioural changes by citizens in well-off nations may go a long way in arresting climate change. A new climate movement has also sprung up based on this.

The Jump, as the climate movement is called is asking those who sign up do these six things.

Eating a largely plant-based diet with big portions and ensuring no waste.

Buying no more than three clothing items in a year.

Using electrical products for at least seven years.

Taking only one short-distance flight in three years and a long-distance flight in eight years.

Getting rid of personal motor vehicles. If this is not possible, keep using the same vehicle for long period.

Making a considerable effort to nudge the system, like using green energy

Tom Bailey, co-founder of the campaign said: “This ends once and for all the debate about whether citizens can have a role in protecting our earth. We don’t have time to wait for one group to act, we need ‘all action from all actors now’. He was quoted by The Guardian.

World poverty to rise as climate change hits food supplies

United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has warned that humanity is not doing enough to limit the effects of climate change. IPCC noted that nearly half of the world population was already vulnerable to increasingly dangerous climate impacts.

Through its report, the IPCC has called for drastic action on huge scale. A third to a half of the planet needs to be conserved to ensure future food and freshwater supplies. Coastal cities need plans to keep people safe from storms and rising seas. And more.

"Adaptation saves lives," UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said with the report's release. "As climate impacts worsen – and they will – scaling up investments will be essential for survival... Delay means death."

The 3,675-page report, the latest in a series by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), details the global consensus on climate science. This report, however, focuses on how nature and societies are being affected and what they can do to adapt.

Russia's invasion of Ukraine overshadowed the release of the report and drove the sole Ukrainian author to leave the proceedings to take shelter, although a government representative did attend its final approval by nearly 200 nations.

British, Spanish and Egyptian officials said the report was a call to action. U.S. Climate Envoy John Kerry lamented that too little has been done to adapt to climate change and said the report offered a "blueprint for action".

"Denial and delay are not strategies, they are a recipe for disaster," Kerry said in a statement.

TOUGH CHOICES

On nearly all counts, the report makes clear that climate change is impacting the world far faster than scientists had anticipated. Meanwhile, countries have failed to rein in planet-warming carbon emissions, which continue to rise.

"Unchecked carbon pollution is forcing the world's most vulnerable on a frogmarch to destruction," Guterres said in a video address Monday. "The facts are undeniable. This abdication of leadership is criminal."

While governments need to drastically curb their emissions to prevent runaway global warming, they can also work to limit suffering by adapting to the conditions of a warmer world, the report says.

That will take a lot of money - to finance new technologies and institutional support. Cities can invest in cooling areas to help people through heatwaves. Coastal communities may need new infrastructure or to relocate altogether.

"The scale of transformation that we need is unprecedented in human history," said Zinta Zommers, a report review editor with the U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

UN climate report calls for immediate, drastic action

As per a latest study, the ice on Mount Everest has been thinning at an alarming rate. The Everest region has been losing ice significantly since the late 1990s, 80 times faster than it took to form in 2000 years.

Mount Everest's highest glacier is melting at an alarming rate, says study

According to a study, the world glaciers are shrinking at a rapid volume than previously estimated. The calculation has raised concern among communities relying on the melting of glaciers to feed rivers and irrigate crops. The revised estimation would decrease global sea-level rise by 3 inches if all glaciers were to melt.

Decreasing carbon dioxide and the atmosphere is a key in the battle to tackle climate change. The main obstacle in that fight is how to plant new trees in a short time in areas that are hard to access. Australia is experimenting with drones to speed up the seed planting process.

Greenland's immense ice sheet has lost enough ice in the past 20 years to submerge the entire United States in half a metre of water, according to data released this week by Danish researchers.

The climate is warming faster in the Arctic than anywhere else on the planet and melting ice from Greenland is now the main factor in the rise in the Earth's oceans, according to NASA.

Since measurements began in 2002, the Greenland ice sheet has lost about 4,700 billion tonnes of ice, said Polar Portal, a joint project involving several Danish Arctic research institutes.

This represents 4,700 cubic kilometres of melted water -- "enough to cover the entire US by half a meter" -- and has contributed 1.2 centimetres to sea level rise, the Arctic monitoring website added.

Polar Portal's findings are based on satellite imagery from the US-German GRACE programme (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment), which showed the ice melt to be most severe near the coasts of the Arctic territory, at the edge of the ice sheet.

In these peripheral zones, "independent observations also indicate that the ice is thinning, that the glacier fronts are retreating in fjords and on land, and that there is a greater degree of melting from the surface of the ice", the website said.

The west coast of Greenland is particularly affected, according to the data.

Climate change is particularly alarming in the Arctic, which scientists say is warming at a rate three to four times the global average.

According to a study published by NASA in late January, the accelerated melting near Greenland's coasts can be explained by the warming of the Arctic Ocean.

The phenomenon "is melting Greenland's glaciers at least as much as warm air is melting them from above".

Melting ice from Greenland is currently the main factor in the rise in the Earth's oceans and the territory's glaciers are now retreating six to seven times faster than they were 25 years ago, the US agency added.

According to climate scientists, the Greenland ice sheet contains enough water to raise the oceans by more than seven metres, and the ice sheet in Antarctica contains enough for a rise of almost 50 metres.

Arctic sea ice cover, although its melting has no effect on sea levels, has also shrunk considerably, losing almost 13 percent of its average surface area every 10 years.

In 20 years, Greenland ice sheet loses water enough to submerge US: Study

Global Warming is already having a major impact across the world and in yet another signal for humanity to act, plants in UK have burst into flowering about a month earlier. A research has said that this has profound consequences for crops and wildlife. The research has used nature observations going back to the 1700s

Trees, herbs and other flowering plants have shifted seasonal rhythms as temperatures have increased, according to the study led by the University of Cambridge.

The results are "truly alarming" because of the ecological threats posed by early flowering, said Ulf Buntgen, a professor from Cambridge's Department of Geography, who led the research published in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Crops can be killed off if they blossom early and are then lashed by a late frost, but reasearchers said the bigger threat was to wildlife.

This is because insects and birds have evolved to synchronise their own development stages with the plants they rely on. When they are no longer in phase, the result is an "ecological mismatch".

"A certain plant flowers, it attracts a particular type of insect, which attracts a particular type of bird, and so on," Buntgen said in a press release from the university.

"But if one component responds faster than the others, there's a risk that they'll be out of synch, which can lead species to collapse if they can't adapt quickly enough."

Spring backwards?

To track the changes in flowering patterns, researchers used a database known as Nature's Calendar, which has entries by scientists, naturalists, amateur and professional gardeners, as well as organisations such as the Royal Meteorological Society, going back more than 200 years.

Looking at more than 400,000 observations of 406 trees, shrubs, herbs and climbing plants across swathes of Britain, they found that the average first flowering date from 1987 to 2019 is 30 days earlier than the average first flowering date from 1753 to 1986.

The changes seen in recent decades coincide with accelerating impacts of human-caused climate change, especially higher temperatures.
Spring in Britain might eventually creep into the historically wintry month of February if global temperatures continue to increase at their current rate, said Buntgen.

That rapid shift in natural cycles could reverberate through forests, farms and gardens.
