The health of Australia's Great Barrier Reef is in a critical state and deteriorating as climate change warms up the waters in which it lies.

The World Heritage-listed site off Australia's northeastern coast is all but doomed, with between 70 and 99 per cent of corals set for destruction unless immediate “transformative action” is taken to reverse global warming, according to a new report.

The Australian Academy of Science says the more ambitious target of the Paris Climate Agreement of keeping global warming to 1.5 degrees has now slipped out of reach and is “virtually impossible”.

In less than a decade, global warming destroyed 14% of the world's corals: Report

When experts say global warming is harmful for every creature on this Earth, they mean it. On the same tune, a new assessment has revealed that all coral reefs in the western Indian Ocean are at the risk of collapse in the next 50 years.

As per a study published in the Nature Sustainability journal, reef systems are at risk of becoming extinct by the year 2070. This can cause a huge loss to biodiversity and hamper livelihood and food sources of several hundreds of thousands of people in the neighbouring areas.

"The collapse of a reef means it becomes functionally extinct as a reef system. You might still find some species there but they won’t be able to construct a reef any more. All of the services we get – coastal protection from sea-level rise, tourism, fisheries, especially for low-income households and communities – are at risk. The tourism sector is huge in east Africa and it depends on heathy reefs," said David Obura, chair of the IUCN corals group, who led the study.

Scientists analysed the health of coral reefs in 10 countries in the neighbouring areas of western Indian ocean. The analysis pointed that coral reefs particularly in the island nations were in grave danger as the water temperature has been alarmingly increasing in these areas due to global heating.

Due to this the bleaching events — the process in which coral reefs let out algae from their tissue and turn white — is becoming increasingly common.

Reefs in north Seychelles and other areas in the east African coast are being labelled as vulnerable and on the verge of collapse, especially due to overfishing. However, reefs in the Comoros and Mascarene Islands, and eastern and southern Madagascar have been classified as critically endangered.

As scientists sound the alarm on 'sixth mass extinction', leaders want an onerous plan to save 'nature'

The world's fashion giants have pledged to trim their carbon footprint but that goal remains elusive at a time "fast fashion" is all the rage -- a topic in the spotlight at the UN climate summit.

With a chance to strut their climate commitments at COP27 talks, clothing brands and manufacturers discussed global warming -- but some admitted that their pledge to halve emissions by 2030 and reach net zero by mid-century might be a stretch.

"Are we there yet? Of course not. Are we on track? I would say ... maybe," Stefan Seidel, senior head of sustainability at Puma, told a panel at the COP27 in the Egyptian seaside resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

Greenpeace and other groups have urged the sector -- already under fire for often exploitative labour practices -- to slow down or end the wasteful trend of mass-producing low-cost clothes that are quickly thrown away.

Fast fashion, they charge, uses up massive amounts of water, produces hazardous chemicals and clogs up landfills in poor countries with textile waste, while also generating greenhouse gases in production, transport and disposal.

The fashion sector was responsible for four per cent of global emissions in 2018 -- about the same as Britain, France and Germany combined -- according to the McKinsey consultancy firm.

Some 30 firms -- from retail giants H&M and Zara owner Inditex to sports apparel rivals Adidas and Nike -- signed up to the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action at the COP24 summit in Poland in 2018.

At the time they pledged to cut emissions by 30 per cent by 2030 and to be net-zero emitters by mid-century.

A year ago they set the new, more ambitious goal of slashing their CO2 emissions by half by the end of the decade, with more than 100 companies now signatories to the pledge.

But meeting the target is a major challenge for an industry with long and complex supply chains that span the globe, industry insiders admit.

- 'Difficult and costly' -

Industry figures at COP27 barely mentioned the "fast fashion" business model, which critics say is at the heart of the problem, focussing instead on ideas around the use of renewable energy in factories and regulation.

But greening the entire supply chain and introducing climate-friendly standards among suppliers of raw materials and factories is a monumental task.

Leyla Ertur, head of sustainability at H&M, said the Swedish firm has more than 800 suppliers.

And Marie-Claire Daveu, sustainability chief at Kering Group, which owns luxury brands Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, said: "Even us, we're not big enough to change all the supplies chains. That's why collaboration is key."

Ali Nouira, an Egyptian manufacturer, told another COP27 panel that certification bodies do not even exist in the region.

"When we manufacture, we need to have all the right certifications and the carbon footprints and all that, and for a small brand coming out from Egypt that is extremely difficult and also costly," Nouira said.

"We also manufacture for other brands, in Europe and other places," he said. "And we're pressured to have the certifications and also to go down with our prices, so they can continue to make the profits they make."

- 'Leap of faith' -

Nicholas Mazzei, head of environmental sustainability at online retailer Zalando, said there had been a culture change in developed countries, with banks offering lower interest rates to companies that commit to a net-zero target.

"If you make that transformation, you may end up paying nothing because the loans are so low the costs are basically free," Mazzei said.

But suppliers face big costs as sewing clothes in factories requires more energy than that used by retail stores at the end of the supply chain.

"We need, at a far bigger scale, more renewable energy than brands do," said Catherine Chiu, vice president of corporate quality and sustainability at Kong Kong firm Crystal International Group.

"Even if we install solar panels in all of our 20 plants, that would only represent 17 per cent of the energy consumption of the group," she said.

Delman Lee, vice chair for sustainability at TAL Apparel, another Hong Kong garment manufacturer, said it has been decarbonising its operations for a decade.

But with subsidiaries in countries including Vietnam and Ethiopia, it is complicated to navigate the different regulations, Lee said.

Aiming to become a net-zero business "is a leap of faith commitment," Lee said. "You commit to something you don't know how to achieve."

The world's fashion giants have pledged to trim their carbon footprint but that goal remains elusive at a time "fast fashion" is all the rage -- a topic in the spotlight at the UN climate summit.

Burning, drifting, and being devoured by insects, Canada’s Boreal forest is shrinking and climate change is to blame.

Second only to the South American Amazon forest, the Boreal forest is vital to ensuring the future of planet Earth, reports AFP. The forest which encircles the arctic and stretches across Canada, Scandinavia, Russia and Alaska has in recent times been weakened by forest fires, the melting of permafrost, an insect infestation, warming temperatures and drifting trees.

Global warming slowly devastating Boreal forest a.k.a. Earth's second lung

If humanity has to limit global temperature rise within 1.5-degree celsius, it can release up to 380 billion tons of carbon dioxide in coming decades, the annual Global Carbon Budget report said on Friday. This emission level cited in the report is equal to just nine years of current emissions.

The report also stated that greenhouse gas pollution will hit a record high this year, consisting of 40.6 billion tons of carbon dioxide. Fossil fuel emissions will contribute 36.7 billion tons of carbon dioxide, the report stated.

This translates into an increase of 9.5 billion tons of atmospheric carbon dioxide.

How much reduction of emissions is required?

To reach the goals of the 2015 Paris agreement, which is preventing global warming beyond 1.5-degree celsius, it will require the world to curb emissions by 1.4 billion tons per year, the annual Global Carbon report said.

Earth set to face catastrophic warming in 9 years, study shows

Extreme weather events are fast becoming a reality. The European Environment Agency (EEA) has warned that heatwaves can kill 90,000 Europeans annually if nothing is done.

This warning comes as a report released on Monday by the World Health Organization said that so far this year at least 15,000 deaths can be attributed to the hot weather in Europe.

The three months of June through August were the hottest in Europe and as a result of the record-breaking heat, the continent experienced its worst drought since the Middle Ages.

"Without adaptation measures, and under a scenario of 3 degrees Celsius global warming by 2100, 90,000 Europeans could die from extreme heat annually," said EEA. The number falls to 30,000 if the warming is limited to 1.5 C.

According to the agency, 129,000 Europeans perished from heat-related causes between 1980 and 2020. The figure is based on insurance data.

This number, however, is expected to rise in the coming years, especially in the south of the continent, due to more frequent heatwaves connected to climate change, an ageing population, and growing urbanization, it said.

Beyond the threat of heat itself, the EEA warned that climate change could also increase Europe's susceptibility to infectious diseases like malaria and dengue fever.

By 2100 in Europe, 90,000 people will die due to hot weather, warns European Environment Agency

On Tuesday (November 8), small island nations came together and raised a call for windfall tax on oil companies in order to compensate developing countries for climate change.

Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley came down heavily on industrialised nations at COP27 Climate Summit. Underlining that rich nations were historically responsible for climate change and global warming of today, she questioned whether poorer nations were to 'face double jeopardy' by giving their sweat and blood for rich nations and now having to pay the cost of climate change.

“We were the ones whose blood, sweat and tears financed the industrial revolution,” she said. “Are we now to face double jeopardy by having to pay the cost as a result of those greenhouse gases from the industrial revolution? That is fundamentally unfair,” said Mottley

Mia Mottley called Monday for a 10 percent tax on oil companies to fund loss and damage.

The contentious issue of loss and damage was added to the COP27 agenda after intense negotiations. The United States and European Union have dragged their feet on the issue in the past, fearful of creating an open-ended reparations regime

At COP27, Mottley found an ally in Gaston Browne, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda.

"It is about time that these companies are made to pay a global COP carbon tax on these profits as a source of funding for loss and damage," Browne told world leaders.

"While they are profiting, the planet is burning," said Browne, who was speaking on behalf of the 39-nation Alliance of Small Island States, many of whose very existence is threatened by rising sea levels and increasingly intense tropical storms.

COP27: Island nations lash out at rich countries over climate change

The United Nations' 27th session of the Conference of Parties (COP27) climate summit began on Sunday in Egypt's Sharm el-Sheikh city. Shadowed by the cost-of-living crisis in the western nations and severe weather events in Africa and parts of Asia, much of the tension in Sharm el-Sheikh is expected to be about funds to be pledged by rich nations to help their developing counterparts in the global south fight climate change.

Compensation for developing nations to be discussed

Delegates at the COP27 summit agreed to discuss whether rich nations should compensate developing countries most vulnerable to climate change for their suffering.

“This creates for the first time an institutionally stable space on the formal agenda of COP and the Paris Agreement to discuss the pressing issue of funding arrangements needed to deal with existing gaps, responding to loss and damage,” COP27 president Sameh Shoukry said in the opening plenary of the conference.

The loss and damage discussions now on the agenda at COP27 will not involve liability or binding compensation, but they are intended to lead to a conclusive decision “no later than 2024,” Shoukry said.

At COP26 in 2021 in Scotland's Glasgow, high-income nations called for a new three-year dialogue for discussions related to climate-related aid to the poorer nations. Whether Sharm-el-Sheikh will be able to replace the vagueness of Glasgow with respect to a tangible solution towards such a funding programme, remains to be seen.

“The inclusion of this agenda reflects a sense of solidarity for the victims of climate disasters,” COP27 president Sameh Shoukry added.

In his opening speech, the head of the United Nations panel of climate scientists emphasised the urgency of cutting greenhouse gas emissions while also working towards global adaptation to the effects of climate change.

Scientific community ‘ready to work’ to limit global warming: Key UN panel chair on Climate Change

"This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to save our planet and our livelihoods," said Hoesung Lee, chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.

"The scientific community remains ready to work with you and support you every step of the way in this journey to limit global warming and also for achieving sustainable development. Humanity, our planet, and species living on it deserve nothing less," he added.

The outgoing chair of the Conference of the Parties talks, British official Alok Sharma, said countries had made considerable progress at their last meeting in Glasgow, including on setting more ambitious targets for cutting emissions.

“We kept 1.5°C alive,” he said, referring to the goal of the Paris pact, to keep temperature increase since pre-industrial times under that threshold.

More than 40,000 participants were registered for this year's talks. The host Egypt said over 120 world leaders will attend, many of them speaking at a high-level event on November 7-8, while U.S. President Joe Biden was expected to arrive later in the week.

Compensation for developing nations to be discussed Delegates at the COP27 summit agreed to discuss whether rich nations should compensate developing countries most vulnerable to climate change for their suffering. ALSO READ | UN COP27 climate summit opens in Egypt; India to flag climate finance gap The loss and damage discussions now on the agenda at COP27 will not involve liability or binding compensation, but they are intended to lead to a conclusive decision “no later than 2024,” Shoukry said. Scientific community ‘ready to work’ to limit global warming: Key UN panel chair on Climate Change "This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to save our planet and our livelihoods," said Hoesung Lee, chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. "The scientific community remains ready to work with you and support you every step of the way in this journey to limit global warming and also for achieving sustainable development. Humanity, our planet, and species living on it deserve nothing less," he added. WATCH | UN Climate Summit COP27 begins in Egypt; what to expect from it? × The outgoing chair of the Conference of the Parties talks, British official Alok Sharma, said countries had made considerable progress at their last meeting in Glasgow, including on setting more ambitious targets for cutting emissions. COP27: UN climate change panel ready to 'limit global warming', dwell on compensation for developing nations

Global warming has given rise to bigger fires in Siberia, following which the release of huge amounts of carbon trapped in Siberian soil appears imminent, a report published in the journal Science said Thursday. The recent fires have released some 150 million tonnes of carbon, in what the researchers depicted as a ‘feedback loop’ of nature in response to global warming.

Researchers expressed fear that a threshold might soon be crossed, beyond which an even smaller rise in temperature may give rise to an exponential increase in the area burned in the Arctic circle

In 2019 and 2020, fires in Siberia destroyed a surface area equivalent to nearly half of that which burned in the previous 40 years, the study said.

“The area above the Arctic circle heats up four times faster than the rest of the planet and it is this climate amplification which causes abnormal fire activity,” David Gaveau, one of the authors of the study, was quoted as saying by AFP.

Looking ahead to the future, the study has predicted two possible scenarios.

In the first one, if nothing is done to fight climate change, fires of the same gravity as in 2020 may occur every year.

In the second scenario, if concentrations of greenhouse gases stabilise and temperatures level out by the second half of this century, severe fires like those of 2020 would break out on average every 10 years, said Adria Descals Ferrando, the main author of the study.

Either way "summers with fires like those of 2020 are going to be more and more frequent starting in 2050 and beyond," said Gaveau.

International climate pledges remain far off track to limit rising temperatures to 1.5 degrees Celsius, according to a report released by the United Nations on Wednesday, less than two weeks ahead of high-stakes negotiations to tackle global warming.

The combined climate pledges of more than 190 nations that signed up to the 2015 Paris climate deal put Earth on track to warm by around 2.5C compared to pre-industrial levels by the century's end.

With the planet already battered by climate-enhanced heatwaves, storms and floods after just 1.2C of warming, experts say the world is still failing to act with sufficient urgency to curb greenhouse gas emissions.

"We are still nowhere near the scale and pace of emission reductions required to put us on track toward a 1.5 degrees Celsius world," said Simon Stiell, Executive Secretary of UN Climate Change.

"To keep this goal alive, national governments need to strengthen their climate action plans now and implement them in the next eight years."

The UN's climate experts have said emissions -- compared to 2010 levels -- need to fall 45 per cent by 2030 in order to meet the Paris deal's more ambitious goal.

In its latest report, the UN said that current commitments from governments around the world will in fact increase emissions by 10.6 per cent by 2030.

Swiss glaciers have lost more than six per cent of their total volume this year, recording its worst melting rate since record keeping began over a century ago, the Swiss Academy of Sciences said in their report on Wednesday.

The cause of glacial retreat has been attributed to exceptionally low winter snowfall coupled with back-to-back heatwaves.

According to their report, about three cubic km of ice have melted away this year, which amounts to about three trillion litres of water.

The scale of the ice melt was so drastic that several bodies and a plane that were buried deep for decades were found, while millenia-era rocks that were covered under snow re-emerged, reports Reuters news agency.

Small glaciers across the Alps like Pizol in the east near Liechtenstein, Vadret dal Corvatsch near St Moritz in the southeast, and Schwarzbachfirn in central Switzerland have “practically disappeared", the academy said.

A similar situation was observed in the neighbouring Germany, in which the ice sheet on the Southern Schneeferner in the Alps receded so much this summer that it is no longer being considered a glacier, The Bavarian Academy of Sciences in Germany noted.

A 2019 report by the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change had warned that the Alps' glaciers would lose more than 80 per cent of their current mass by 2100 if greenhouse gas emissions continue to rise. Here's why The report had noted that many glaciers would disappear regardless of whatever emissions action is taken now, due to high levels of global warming. Swiss glaciers' melting rate peaks to worst in century, lose over 6% volume in 2022

Giant telescopes that focus their lenses at the unending cosmos from the surface of Earth have to be constructed at carefully selected sites. Work of the telescope must not get hindered due to ordinary weather phenomemon like fog, clouds rains etc. Hence, such giant telescopes are installed in remote places, high on mountains or in deserts and so on.

But now even such care taken while choosing the site for the telescopes may not be adequate to ensure that work is not hampered. A study says that climate change may create problems for scientists using these telescopes.

The study was carried out by researchers in University of Bern and the National Centre of Competence in Research (NCCR).

“Even though telescopes usually have a lifetime of several decades, site selection processes only consider the atmospheric conditions over a short timeframe. Usually over the past five years – too short to capture long-term trends, let alone future changes caused by global warming,” explained study lead author Caroline Haslebacher. She has been quoted by Earth.com

“Nowadays, astronomical observatories are designed to work under the current site conditions and only have a few possibilities for adaptation. Potential consequences of the climatic conditions for telescopes therefore include a higher risk of condensation due to an increased dew point or malfunctioning cooling systems, which can lead to more air turbulence in the telescope dome,” she added.

“This is the first time that such a study has been possible. Thanks to the higher resolution of the global climate models developed through the Horizon 2020 PRIMAVERA project, we were able to examine the conditions at various locations of the globe with great fidelity – something that we were unable to do with conventional models. These models are valuable tools for the work we do at the Wyss Academy,” said study co-author Marie-Estelle Demory.
