Israel-Hamas war: Israeli strikes pound Gaza overnight

A day after an Israeli strike on an ambulance in the Gaza Strip on Friday (Nov 3), the evacuation of injured Gazans and foreign passport holders through the Rafah border crossing to Egypt were suspended. Since the start of the Israel-Hamas war on Oct 7, the Rafah crossing to the Sinai peninsula in Egypt has been the only exit point from Gaza not controlled by Israel. According to a report by the news agency Reuters on Sunday, US, Egyptian, and Qatari officials said that efforts were on to resume the evacuations.

Speaking to Reuters, a senior US State Department official said that the crossing would open later on Sunday. Evacuations through the Rafah border crossing started on Wednesday. Reuters reported that, unlike the previous days, Gaza's border authority did not publish a list of approved foreign passport holders and dependents.

An Egyptian official told the news agency that the Egyptian side of the border was open as usual for any evacuees, but that crossings were suspended because of bombardments in Gaza. Cairo was "making genuine efforts to resume activity," the official added.

Meanwhile, Qatar, which has played a major role in facilitating humanitarian aid and hostage releases, said it was also pushing to resume crossings but no timeline was set.

On Sunday, Qatar Foreign Ministry spokesperson Majed Al Ansari said, "The bombing of hospitals and the bombing of ambulances, which are part of this agreement for ambulance convoys to move patients out of harm's way, certainly does not help."

"We urge all parties, but especially the occupation army to make sure that there are safe routes and that the agreement, as it was reached, is respected," he added.

Hollywood A-listers, including Selena Gomez, Bella Hadid, Gigi Hadid, Jennifer Lopez, and Zayn Malik among others, have written an open letter to US President Joe Biden, imploring him to act swiftly and call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas conflict. This initiative has garnered support from prominent organisations like Oxfam America and ActionAid USA.

In the open letter addressed to President Biden, the group expressed their shared concerns as artists and advocates, but more importantly, as human beings deeply affected by the devastating loss of lives and unfolding horrors in Israel and Palestine.

The letter passionately pleads for de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza and Israel, emphasising the urgency of such action to prevent further loss of life. The artists highlight the staggering toll of more than 5,000 lives lost in the past week and a half, a number that they believe should "stir the conscience of any person". They assert their belief that all life is sacred, regardless of faith or ethnicity, and strongly condemn the loss of innocent Palestinian and Israeli lives.

Dear President Biden,

We come together as artists and advocates, but most importantly as human beings witnessing the devastating loss of lives and unfolding horrors in Israel and Palestine.

We ask that, as President of the United States, you and the US Congress call for an immediate de-escalation and ceasefire in Gaza and Israel before another life is lost. More than 5,000 people have been killed in the last week and a half – a number any person of conscience knows is catastrophic. We believe all life is sacred, no matter faith or ethnicity and we condemn the killing of Palestinian and Israeli civilians.

We urge your administration, Congress, and all world leaders, to honor all of the lives in the Holy Land and call for and facilitate a ceasefire without delay – an end to the bombing of Gaza, and the safe release of hostages. Half of Gaza’s two million residents are children, and more than two thirds are refugees and their descendants being forced to flee their homes. Humanitarian aid must be allowed to reach them.

We believe that the United States can play a vital diplomatic role in ending the suffering and we are adding our voices to those from the US Congress, UNICEF, Doctors without Borders, The International Committee of The Red Cross, and so many others. Saving lives is a moral imperative. To echo UNICEF, “Compassion — and international law — must prevail.”

As of this writing more than 6,000 bombs have been dropped on Gaza in the last 12 days - resulting in one child being killed every 15 minutes.

"Children and families in Gaza have practically run out of food, water, electricity, medicine and safe access to hospitals, following days of air strikes and cuts to all supply routes. Gaza’s sole power plant ran out of fuel Wednesday afternoon, shutting down electricity, water and wastewater treatment. Most residents can no longer get drinking water from service providers or household water through pipelines.... The humanitarian situation has reached lethal lows, and yet all reports point to further attacks. Compassion — and international law — must prevail.” – UNICEF spokesperson James Elder

Beyond our pain and mourning for all of the people there and their loved ones around the world we are motivated by an unbending will to stand for our common humanity. We stand for freedom, justice, dignity and peace for all people – and a deep desire to stop more bloodshed.

We refuse to tell future generations the story of our silence, that we stood by and did nothing. As Emergency Relief Chief Martin Griffiths told UN News, “History is watching.”

What does the MQ-9 Reaper drone exactly do?

The MQ-9 Reaper is an unmanned aerial vehicle developed by General Atomics. What sets it apart is its ability to linger at altitudes of around 50,000 feet, performing reconnaissance missions for more than 27 hours continuously.

It is equipped with state-of-the-art cameras, sensors, and radar systems, making it a powerful intelligence-gathering tool.

The drone boasts an impressive wingspan of 66 feet (about 20.12 metres), powered by a Honeywell engine, and has a fuel capacity of 3,900 pounds (approximately 1769 kg), all while achieving a maximum speed of 240 knots (around 444 km per hour).

Additionally, it has the capacity to carry air-to-ground missiles. The MQ-9 Reaper has been an integral part of the US Air Force for 16 years and is also employed by various international entities, including the US Department of Homeland Security, NASA, the UK Royal Air Force, the Italian Air Force, the French Air Force, and the Spanish Air Force, as reported by Reuters.

What is the reason for the presence of MQ-9 drones in the skies over Gaza?

Over the skies of Gaza, the MQ-9 Reapers have been deployed for a specific mission—locating hostages.

These drones are unarmed and rely on advanced onboard sensors to accomplish this task.

Among these sensors are high-powered cameras capable of detecting heat signatures and operating in low-light conditions.

Reports suggest that a minimum of six MQ-9 Reaper drones have been utilized in the region, with their flight paths primarily concentrated in the southern area of Gaza.

Amelia Smith, an aviation researcher cited by the New York Times, noted that the Reapers would typically hover over the region for approximately three hours at an altitude of around 25,000 feet.

It's worth noting that this deployment marked the first recorded instance of US drones being dispatched over Gaza.

Drones, like the MQ-9 Reaper, offer several key advantages. They are generally more cost-effective compared to crewed aircraft with similar capabilities.

Additionally, they are safer for operators since they do not require a human pilot onboard. One of their standout features is the ability to remain in the air for extended periods, making them well-suited for intelligence-gathering missions.

The cost of operating a drone like the MQ-9 Reaper is approximately $3,500 per flight hour, in contrast to about $8,000 per flight hour for an F-16, as indicated by General Atomics.

According to the US Air Force, a package consisting of four MQ-9 aircraft with sensors, a ground control station, and a satellite link costs roughly $56.5 million.

General Atomics also says that the MQ-9 Reaper has demonstrated air-to-air weaponry capability in Air Force tests. Furthermore, it can be equipped with a "Self Protect Pod" designed to detect threats and deploy countermeasures against surface-to-air weapons.

The diplomatic adviser to the president of UAE on Saturday (Nov 4) called for the United States to push for an immediate end to the war between Israel and the Palestinian terrorist militant group Hamas in Gaza.

Anwar Gargash, the diplomatic adviser to the UAE president, further said that if the US fails to find a process to end the decades-long Israeli-Palestinian conflict then it would be seen as ineffective.

Gargash also stated that Israel's policy of restraint, which has been the "hallmark" of the Palestinian issue for the past 20 years, had fallen and called for a new policy that takes refugees, borders and East Jerusalem into consideration.

"US involvement will be seen by when we end this war, the quicker the better, and whether we can have another you know, sort of process at problem-solving, at issue solving," he said at a policy conference in the capital Abu Dhabi.

"If this crisis continues, and especially the humanitarian side, and if this crisis, brings us back full circle, to the old containment policy of pre-Seventh of October, I think the American role here is not going to be, forget right and wrong, is not going to be seen as effective," he added.

UAE warns against risk of regional spillover

The United Arab Emirates on Friday (Nov 3) warned against the risk of regional spillover of the ongoing war between Israel and Hamas further adding that it was making efforts "relentlessly" towards a humanitarian ceasefire.

"As we continue working to stop this war, we cannot ignore the wider context and the necessity to turn down the regional temperature that is approaching a boiling point," Noura Al Kaabi, a minister of state at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told a policy conference in the UAE's capital, Abu Dhabi.

"The risk of regional spillover and further escalation is real, as well as the risk that extremist groups will take advantage of the situation to advance ideologies that will keep us locked in cycles of violence."

As per news agency Reuters reports, the UAE said that it has planned to treat 1,000 Palestinian children from Gaza, but did not elaborate on how the kids would leave the besieged Palestinian enclave.

"We are working relentlessly to reach an immediate and full humanitarian ceasefire so life-saving aid could be delivered to the Gaza Strip," Al Kaabi said.

She further called for the safety of civilians and said that the upsurge in violence was an outcome of "decades of long failure" to find a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
