A Florida judge has awarded $3 million to the family of Gabby Petito, an American woman who was killed by her fiancée, Brian Laundrie, while they were travelling together on a van life journey across the United States.

Gabby Petito and her boyfriend Brian Laundrie embarked on the US tour in July 2021, and the journey was supposed to end after four months. However, Petito disappeared in late August. The lawsuit was filed in May this year, in which Laundrie was accused of murdering his girlfriend, Associated Press reported. A separate lawsuit has also been filed against the Laundrie family.

Sarasota County Circuit Judge Hunter W. Carroll signed off the settlement on Thursday, where the Petito family declared the awarded money will be wired to the Gabby Petito foundation, a mission dedicated to locating missing people and curbing domestic violence.

As per the charges, the Laundrie family deliberately concealed Brian’s confession of&nbsp;killing Petito before he returned home in September 2021 to Florida from their trip out West in a converted van.

In November last year, it was established that Laundrie died due to a self-inflicted gunshot.

The Guardian reports that the Petito family has also filed a $50 million wrongful death lawsuit against Police in Moab, Utah, where the Police allegedly allowed the couple to continue their journey despite glaring signs of domestic abuse and physical violence. The lawsuits against the Utah Police and the Laundrie family are still going on.

Although a coroner earlier said Gabby Petito's cause of death was manual strangulation, the lawsuit listed&nbsp;blunt force injuries to her head and neck along with manual strangulation as the cause of her death. &nbsp;

On August 27, Schmidt's had last communication with her daughter, the suit said. As per it, on August 30, Brian, who was pretending to be Gabby, sent a text message to Schmidt that there was no service in Yosemite Park. The family thinks this was done to make them believe Gabby Petito was still alive. &nbsp;&nbsp;

"Christopher Laundrie and Roberta Laundrie knew of the mental suffering and anguish of Joseph Petito and Nichole Schmidt, and knew that they could alleviate, at least in part, such mental suffering and anguish by disclosing what they knew about the well-being and the location of the remains of Gabrielle Petito, yet they repeatedly refused to do so," the suit said. &nbsp;&nbsp;

As per a statement from the family's lawyer, the Petitos thanked the FBI for its support. &nbsp;

Petito, 22, had last been seen alive on August 26th. Her body was discovered near the remote Spread Creek Dispersed Campground in Bridger-Teton National Forest in western Wyoming. Medical examiners found that she had been strangled.

Petito and Laundrie, who lived with Laundrie's parents in North Port on Florida's west coast, embarked on their trip in early July from New York's Long Island, where they had both attended high school.

As they traveled through Kansas, Colorado, Utah and points west, Petito documented their "van life" on social media with videos and pictures that depicted a loving couple having an American adventure.

She posted her final photo to Instagram on Aug. 25, the same day she last spoke to her mother by phone.

FBI finds human remains in Florida amid search for Gabby Petito's fiance Brian Laundrie

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has confirmed that the human remains found near the Wyoming border belong to Gabby Petito.

Gabby Petito, a 22-year-old woman from Florida, was travelling along with her fiance Brian Laundrie but was reported missing on September 11 after he returned alone from the trip and refused to answer questions about her.

He did contact not her family or the police when he returned on September 1.

The police are searching for him after the FBI found human remain's ''consistent'' with Petito's description.

The FBI later said a county coroner had confirmed that Petito's cause of death was a homicide and have labelled him a ''person of interest.''

According to bodycam footage released by the Utah police,&nbsp;Peitio had filed a report about a domestic violence incident and had complained about her mental health.
