Speaking to WION's diplomatic correspondent Sidhant Sibal, ambassador Krisnamurthi said, "The most important thing is that we have to make sure that G20 is relevant, the challenges that happen globally and it delivers." Concerns remain even for a basic family photo of G20 member countries due to the West and Russia divide. India will be the next chair of the grouping and will host the summit in September of next year. WION: What will be the focus of Indonesia under its presidency of the G20 grouping? Ina Krishnamurthi: We maintain our 3 priorities, which are strengthening global health, digital economy enhancement and energy security. We will maintain the priorities until we pass the baton to India in November. WION: Bali has been chosen for the summit, why Bali? Ina Krishnamurthi: Bali is famous for its peace and tranquility and people coming to the place are happy and feel safe at home. In the past, we had many engagements at the level of leaders with very positive contributory outcomes. It is our hope that the next G20 summit also will produce very concrete deliverables as well as will not be a place where people get angry very quickly. WION: Bali means peace but the summit happening in the backdrop of Russia Ukraine conflict, the Taiwan strait crisis. Do you think this year's summit will see the family photo because we have seen occasions when all sides have issues? Ina Krishnamurthi: Well, happen or not, the most important thing is that we have to make sure that G20 is relevant, the challenges that happen globally and it delivers. So that people will not ask what the G20 is doing as prime economic engagement. So I think a photo opportunity is the best way to give a message for, maybe, nice things, and more importantly, to have a G20 that is relevant nowadays. WION: All leaders confirmed the presence? Ina Krishnamurthi: I haven't heard anything else. WION: How do you see the bilateral relations between India and Indonesia? The foreign ministers of the two countries met on the sidelines of the UNGA in New York. Ina Krishnamurthi: I think, the engagement between minister Retno Marsudi and minister Jaishankar is very close, especially this year because of the global dynamics and because we are back-to-back presidency of the G20, bilateral relationship between the two countries needs more strengthening in other areas. We need to also focus on people-to-people contact because I think the connection between our foundation of history is not enough as a way to move forward in future. We need more trade, investment, defence cooperation or other cooperation, we need more engagement with India. WION: Will Indonesia be keen to be part of the BRICS? Another I in the BRICS. Ina Krishnamurthi: Well, I think Indonesia is always keen on engaging with countries, friendly countries in whatever format. We are not closing the doors on any kind of framework of engagement including BRICS, we are not also closing any possibility of engaging with other frameworks. Host Indonesia presented a plan at the discussions detailing guidelines to hasten a "fair" transition to cleaner energy, and the G20 members supported it.&nbsp;

According to Indonesia's energy minister, Arifin Tasrif, the non-binding "Bali Compact," which outlines guidelines for achieving net zero emissions, was approved by all participants.&nbsp;

Although specifics were not made public, the minister stated that the plan aims to improve national energy planning and implementation in order to increase investment and financing while also enhancing energy security and efficiency.&nbsp;

Tasrif said in a Friday online press conference that the G20 energy ministers "sent a strong signal to the market that policymakers are taking action to strengthen the investment-enabling environment."

However, the officials were unable to agree on a joint communique at the one-day summit because of "differences among countries," Tasrif stated without going into further detail.&nbsp;

The invasion of Ukraine was condemned by a number of countries, notably Britain and France, who said it had disrupted the energy supply.&nbsp;

According to a list seen by AFP, representatives from the United States, Saudi Arabia, Australia, Germany, India, South Africa, and the European Union were also there.&nbsp;

No binding agreement reached in Bali G20 energy talks due to Russia-Ukraine war

Chinese and Russian leaders Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin will attend the G20 summit on the resort island of Bali this November, a longtime adviser to the Indonesian president said on Friday.

Andi Widjajanto, former cabinet secretary and unofficial adviser to President Joko Widodo, who is popularly known as Jokowi, told Reuters the two leaders would join the summit.

"Jokowi told me that Xi and Putin are both planning to attend in Bali," Widjajanto, who heads the National Resilience Institute, told Reuters.

On Thursday, Jokowi told Bloomberg News that both leaders had given him their assurances. Indonesian presidential officials did not respond to requests for confirmation of the report.

The Chinese foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. A Kremlin spokesperson declined to comment to Bloomberg, but another official familiar with the situation told the news agency Putin plans to attend the meeting in person.

The trip would be significant given it would be Xi's first time outside China since January 2020, when he visited Myanmar.

China maintains a zero-COVID policy that has all but shut its borders to international travel.

Since then, Xi made his only trip outside of mainland China on June 30, visiting Hong Kong to mark the 25th anniversary of the handover of the territory from British control.

Xi is widely expected to secure a precedent-breaking third leadership term during a once-in-five-year congress of the ruling Communist Party scheduled for this autumn, most likely before he would head to Bali for the mid-November G20 gathering.

No dates have been announced for the party congress, but the last two took place in late October and early November.

Blinken is expected to repeat warnings to China not to support Russia's war in Ukraine and the two sides will address contentious issues that include Taiwan, China's extensive South China Sea claims, its expansion of influence in the Pacific, human rights, and trade tariffs. However, both sides share an interest in keeping the relationship stable and Blinken and U.S. officials say President Joe Biden and Chinese President Xi Jinping are expected to speak again in the coming weeks, something Saturday's meeting is likely to address.

Relevant Chinese companies who run the projects do so with the aim of helping the local people to develop the economy and improve their livelihoods,'' he added.

Despite India’s objections, China is building the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor in the disputed region of Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (PoK).

In the last few days, Indonesian President Joko Widodo is seen engaging in active diplomacy even as he visited Ukraine's capital Kyiv and Russian capital Moscow. President Widodo was in Germany last week for the G7, and also held a bilateral with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. During the bilateral meet, they discussed the G20 chairmanship. India is the chair of the grouping for next year and will hold the summit in Delhi. In December, India will be chair of SCO, G20 &amp; UNSC.

Pakistan will boycott the Group of Twenty (G20) meeting that will reportedly be hosted by India in Jammu and Kashmir. As per media reports, Pakistan is also reaching out to its close allies in the group of twenty - China, Turkey and Saudi Arabia to boycott the G20 meeting.&nbsp;

Pakistan-based The Express Tribune reported that the country would particularly approach countries like China, Turkey and Saudi Arabia to convey their concerns.&nbsp;

Islamabad would also speak to the US, the UK and other G20 members in order to counter Indian plans.&nbsp;

The Group of Twenty, or G20, is an intergovernmental forum comprising 19 countries and the European Union. The grouping addresses major issues related to the global economy.&nbsp;

They are expected to discuss international financial stability, climate change mitigation and sustainable development, etc.&nbsp;

India is set to assume the presidency of the G20 in December this year and the Indian Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal was appointed as India's Sherpa for the G20 in September 2021.&nbsp;

India will hold the G-20 presidency from December 1, 2022, and convene the first G20 leaders' summit in 2023, the Ministry of External Affairs said.&nbsp;

The G20 countries include Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, France, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, the United States and the United Kingdom.&nbsp;

According to a report by Ukinform, Zelensky met Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Kyiv regarding the event and the two world leaders have a conversation about Ukraine’s possible participation. Widodo arrived in Kyiv earlier on Wednesday and he also visited the city of Irpin which has been ravaged by the constant conflict.

The G20 summit can possibly be the first time that Zelensky will be in the same event as Russian President Vladimir Putin since the Russian invasion of Ukraine started in February. Both leaders have appeared in same events but that has mainly been through video links. Widodo will be travelling next to Moscow in order to meet Putin and invite him personally to the G20 Summit.

Volodymyr Zelensky says will attend G20 Summit depending on other ‘participants’

Pakistan has said that it opposes India’s plan to host some G20 Summit events in Kashmir in 2023.

Pakistan Foreign Office spokesperson Asim Iftikhar Ahmad in a statement said that Islamabad had taken note that India might be “contemplating to hold some G20-related meeting in Jammu and Kashmir”.

“Contemplating the holding of any G20-related meeting/event in JK, in utter disregard of the globally acknowledged ‘disputed’ status of the territory, is a travesty that the international community cannot accept under any circumstances,” the spokesperson said.

“Pakistan completely rejects any such attempt by India,” he added.

Calling Jammu and Kashmir a “disputed” territory between Pakistan and India, Ahmad said that Islamabad it hopes that in case of any such “controversial proposal” from New Delhi, the G20 members will be fully cognisant of the imperatives of law and justice and would reject it outright.

Ahmad called on the international community to urge India to revoke its actions of August 5, 2019, and free all political prisoners.

After the abrogation of article 370, this summit being held here is something no one would have dreamt of, there is a change on the ground in the valley, '' said Altaf Thakur, state spokesperson, Bharatiya Janata Party.

Some leaders also congratulated the state and central government for managing to host this summit in the union territory. ''It's great news. We welcome this, holding a summit here will give Jammu and Kashmir a push for peace. This also shows that peace is returning to the valley. In September last year, Union Commerce and Industry Minister, Piyush Goyal was appointed India's Sherpa for the G20. The Ministry of External Affairs had said that India will hold the G20 presidency from December 1, 2022, and will convene the G20 leaders' summit in 2023 for the first time.

According to an official order issued on Thursday, the Union Territory's housing and urban development department principal secretary will be the chairman of the committee which was formed in response to a June 4 communication from the Ministry of External Affairs.

"Sanction is hereby accorded to the constitution of a committee? for overall coordination of G20 meetings to be held in the Union Territory of J&amp;K," the order issued by Principal Secretary, General Administration Department, Manoj Kumar Dwivedi said, as reported by PTI.

The members of the committee include Commissioner Secretary (Transport), Administrative Secretary (Tourism), Administrative Secretary (Hospitality and Protocol) and Administrative Secretary (Culture).

"Further, principal secretary to the government, housing and urban development department is also nominated as UT level nodal officer to coordinate the arrangements for G-20 meetings in the Union Territory of J&amp;K," the order said.

Prime Minister Modi has led India's representation at G20 summits since 2014. India has been a member of the G20 since its inception in 1999. According to the MEA, India will be part of the G20 Troika (preceding, current, and incoming G20 Presidencies) from December 1, 2021, till November 30, 2024.

"Sanction is hereby accorded to the constitution of a committee? for overall coordination of G20 meetings to be held in the Union Territory of J&K," the order issued by Principal Secretary, General Administration Department, Manoj Kumar Dwivedi said, as reported by PTI. The members of the committee include Commissioner Secretary (Transport), Administrative Secretary (Tourism), Administrative Secretary (Hospitality and Protocol) and Administrative Secretary (Culture). "Further, principal secretary to the government, housing and urban development department is also nominated as UT level nodal officer to coordinate the arrangements for G-20 meetings in the Union Territory of J&K," the order said. In addition to the summit, India will be hosting 190 meetings across the country under its yearlong presidency starting first December this year. Indian govt could, as part of its discretion invite other countries to take part in the summit, something that previous G20 Presidency have been doing.

New Delhi is already in the G20 governance structure called the troika which consists of Indonesia, Italy, and India - the current, previous, and incoming G20 Presidencies, respectively. It will be for the first time it hosts the summit of the grouping since it was formed after the 2008 financial crisis.

Indonesia is the current chair of the group. It hosts the summit in November, in Bali. One of the key issues dominating the agenda is the participation of Russian President Putin which many western members of the group do not want.

Over the weekend, Indian external affairs minister Dr S Jaishankar &amp; Indonesia's Foreign Retno Marsudi held talks, with a key focus on G20. In a tweet statement, EAM said, 'exchanged views on G20 developments and progress. India is fully supportive of the Indonesian Presidency."

Amid the covid crisis, grouping under Saudi leadership in 2020 had emergency meeting to deal with the pandemic including injecting financial support. India is among the founder member of the grouping which basically includes the top 20 economies of the world. G20 has taken collective action against issues like tax avoidance, debt time wavier to developing countries etc.

India looking to host G20 summit in October or November 2023

The Russian invasion of Ukraine has entered its third month and the constant attacks on Ukrainian cities continue with Russia looking to find a proper foothold in the country. The tensions are at an all-time high with Russia not backing down and more sanctions being announced by Europe.

However, there can be a meeting between the head of the two warring nations in the near future as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has been invited to the G20 summit to be held in Bali in November this year by the Indonesian prime minister Joko Widodo as the leader of the host nation.

“I have invited President Zelenskyy to attend the G20 summit,” PM Widodo said in his address.

Russia is an important member of the G20 and president Vladmir Putin has confirmed that he will be attending the summit. Widodo said that he received a phone call from Putin confirming his participation but it remains to be seen whether he attends in person or virtually.

According to an AFP report, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said that Russia is preparing for this year’s G20 summit but he did not comment on whether Putin will be visiting Indonesia.

Zelensky thanked Widodo for the invitation and appreciated his support for "sovereignty and territorial integrity, in particular for a clear position in the" United Nations" with respect to Ukraine.

The invitation extended to Zelensky is a special one on behalf of the head of the host nation as Ukraine is currently not a part of the G20.
