Frank Lampard believes Chelsea are already showing the benefits of his £200 million ($257 million) spending spree as they kicked off their Premier League campaign with a 3-1 win at Brighton on Monday.

Blues boss Lampard has splashed out on a host of new signings and the early returns on his lavish investment were promising.&nbsp;

Germany striker Timo Werner, a £53 million recruit from Leipzig, won the penalty that Jorginho converted to put Chelsea ahead.

Kai Havertz, who made a £70 million switch from Bayer Leverkusen, wasn't quite so impactful, but Lampard will be confident there are better days to come from the young Germany forward.

"Timo's speed to win the penalty showed he is sharp and he was a threat all night. He is very mobile and I liked his performance," Lampard said.

"With Kai we saw a lot as well. To get these minutes will only be good and both of them will be huge players for this club."

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga was guilty of another mistake when Leandro Trossard equalised for Brighton.

But Reece James' superb strike put Chelsea back in front before Kurt Zouma's deflected effort sealed the points.

It was an encouraging result for Lampard, who has accepted he is under pressure to deliver a title challenge after spending more than any other club so far in the summer transfer window.

"I think to expect everything to click on day one is very difficult. But what they did do was show a bit of determination," Lampard said.

@I really liked the work ethic and the discipline of the team. We've been together as a team for four days after the international break. We had a lot of quarantines before that and new signings.

"We might have dropped points in this game last season. I'm not getting excited by that on day one, but it had a little bit of determination and resilience about it I thought."

Chelsea finished 33 points behind champions Liverpool in fourth last season before a disappointing FA Cup final defeat against Arsenal, but they are primed to improve if Lampard can gel his new signings.

Lampard's other expensive recruits, former Ajax playmaker Hakim Ziyech and ex-Leicester left-back Ben Chilwell, were both sidelined by injuries, while Thiago Silva wasn't available as he returns to training following his free transfer from Paris Saint-Germain.

The historians among Chelsea's fanbase will have noted this was the third time they have started a Premier League campaign with a Monday night victory, with the Blues going on to win the title on the previous occasions in 2014-15 and 2016-17.

The only frustration for Lampard was Kepa's howler.

The world's most expensive keeper was already under pressure to improve after an error-strewn season and with Chelsea having spoken to Rennes about Senegal keeper Edouard Mendy, his days as first choice might be numbered.

Insisting he has not written off Kepa yet, Lampard said: "I am happy with Kepa, I saw confidence in him, he is here, he is our keeper and I am happy with him."

<h2>- Classy Werner -</h2>

Werner was Chelsea's central striker while Havertz lined up on the right flank in the three-man attack.

It was Werner who showed all his class as Chelsea took the lead in the 23rd minute.

Brighton midfielder Steven Alzate surrendered possession with a wayward pass and Jorginho fed Werner, who raced through on goal and was brought down by Mat Ryan as he rounded the Albion keeper.

Jorginho stepped up to take the penalty and Chelsea's captain sent Ryan the wrong way with his trademark hop before shooting.

Brighton equalised in the 54th minute when Trossard's 20-yard shot slipped under Kepa's weak attempted save.

Kepa's blunder wasn't fatal for Chelsea as James restored their lead just 100 seconds later with a stunning 30-yard blast.

Chelsea sealed the points in the 66th minute when Zouma met James' corner with a volley that took a heavy deflection of Adam Webster to wrong-foot Ryan.

Big-spending Chelsea start with win at Brighton

The world's most expensive footballer was shown the red card in stoppage time of the 1-0 loss at the Parc des Princes alongside teammates Layvin Kurzawa and Leandro Paredes, as well as Marseille's Dario Benedetto and Jordan Amavi.

Neymar insisted Alvaro Gonzalez called him a "monkey" in a series of furious tweets late on Sunday after he was dismissed for slapping the Marseille defender on the back of the head.

"Look at the racism. That's why I hit him," Neymar, who was returning from coronavirus quarantine, said as he left the pitch. Gonzalez later denied making a racist comment.

"The only regret I have is not hitting this idiot in the face," Neymar then posted after the game, before replying to a Gonzalez tweet to call him a "racist".

Marseille issued a statement of their own defending the 30-year-old Spanish centre-back.

"Alvaro Gonzalez is not racist. He has shown us that by his daily behaviour since joining the club, as his team-mates have already testified," the statement read.

The French league's disciplinary commission, which will decide the punishments, could investigate Neymar's accusations against Gonzalez, who Marseille claim was spat on by Angel Di Maria.

Marseille pledged to "fully cooperate" with any investigation and said the club would remain at the disposal of the commission.

Any racist behaviour carries a maximum suspension of 10 matches.&nbsp;

Spitting directed at another player can lead to a ban of up to six matches.

Kurzawa meanwhile could be suspended for up to seven matches for violent conduct after aiming a punch at opposition full-back Amavi.

PSG, who have lost their opening two games of the season for the first time since 1984/85, host Metz on Wednesday in what was originally scheduled to be their season opener.

Premier League 2020-21: Action in pictures as new season begins with an eventful week

Carlo Ancelotti said his belief that Everton will compete with the Premier League's top six this season was justified after Dominic Calvert-Lewin's towering header earned their first win over Tottenham since 2012 with a 1-0 victory on Sunday.

Ancelotti has been heavily backed with the signings of James Rodriguez, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Allan, and the Toffees looked a much-improved side on the one that finished 12th last season as they were thoroughly deserving winners at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

"We showed we can compete, which is the most important message, that we can compete if the spirit is good, if the attitude is good," said Ancelotti.

"I said before the game our target was to fight for the European places. The first game was good, we have to see the second game and the third game, so we have to wait a little bit but I have a lot of confidence. I had (confidence) before this game and I have more confidence now, but we have to be focused."

Spurs are also hoping for an upturn in Jose Mourinho's first full season as boss, but the hosts looked &nbsp;short on ideas as they slipped to a damaging home defeat for their aspirations of mounting a challenge to get back into the top four this season.

"I didn't like my team," said Mourinho, who complained of the free-kick leading to Everton's goal and his players' lack of preparation time in a shortened pre-season.

"After their goal we were poor. We were not physically strong, there was no intensity. The team lacks physical condition."

Mourinho added Spurs' pre-season had been hit by positive coronavirus tests, but did not reveal the players involved.

Everton looked the fitter and better prepared side with their new midfield trio helping to control possession, but it was on the counter-attack they wasted by far the best chance of the game.

Richarlison intercepted Ben Davies's wayward pass and accelerated past Toby Alderweireld and Hugo Lloris before skewing high and wide with an open goal to aim at and Calvert-Lewin begging for a cut-back.

Spurs offered little as an attacking threat, but Jordan Pickford did have to make two good saves before half-time to deny Dele Alli and Matt Doherty on his debut.

Everton surrendered meekly to a 1-0 defeat when they visited the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in July without mustering a meaningful shot on goal.

But the difference a few months and fresh faces can make was on show in the second half as they controlled the game to earn a first win over Spurs in 16 games.

The only goal of the game arrived 10 minutes after the break as Calvert-Lewin rose highest to power Lucas Digne's free-kick into the top corner.

Mourinho said on Friday he hopes to add another striker before the end of the transfer window to add some support to Harry Kane, but any new arrival will need better service to work with as the England captain did not have an opportunity to get his side back on level terms.

Everton and Richarlison continued to enjoy all the chances as twice the Brazilian cut inside on his favoured right foot and curled efforts just beyond Lloris's far post.

However, one goal was enough for a statement win for the visitors and the worst possible start for Tottenham ahead of a gruelling schedule as they face up to eight games in the Europa League, League Cup and Premier League in the next three weeks.

"On Thursday we have a knockout game (in the Europa League) so there is not much time to cry or complain," added Mourinho.

'The only regret I have...' - Neymar alleges racism after Alvaro Gonzalez bust-up in PSG vs Marseille

Jurgen Klopp has warned Liverpool's title rivals that splashing out on new signings is no guarantee of success as the Premier League champions start their new campaign against Leeds on Saturday.

Klopp's side are back in action just seven weeks after Jordan Henderson lifted the trophy to mark the culmination of Liverpool's first title-winning campaign for 30 years.

As they powered to the title in record-setting style, Liverpool looked so untouchable that an era of sustained dominance seems eminently possible.

They won 32 of their 38 games to finish 18 points clear of second-placed Manchester City and 33 ahead of both third-placed Manchester United and fourth-placed Chelsea.

But for City, United and Chelsea, the brief break since last season has given Liverpool's title challengers a much-needed chance to improve their firepower by splashing out in the transfer window.

Chelsea have been the biggest spenders as Frank Lampard invested around £200 million ($257 million) on Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell, with Thiago Silva arriving on a free transfer and goalkeeper Edouard Mendy reportedly set to join from Rennes as well.

Forced to surrender the title he had won for the previous two seasons, City boss Pep Guardiola has responded by signing Dutch international Nathan Ake from Bournemouth to finally plug the hole in the heart of his defence left by Vincent Kompany's departure in 2019.

City have also signed promising Spanish winger Ferran Torres from Valencia as Guardiola looks to revitalise a team that seemed weary towards the end of a frustrating season that petered out with their limp Champions League quarter-final defeat against Lyon.

Across Manchester at Old Trafford, United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has a vibrant young team that finished strongly after the January arrival of Bruno Fernandes.

A full season for Portugal playmaker Fernandes, combined with Solskjaer's swoop for Ajax midfielder Donny van de Beek, should allow United to narrow the gap to Liverpool.

<h2>- 'Different kind of club' -</h2>

In contrast, Liverpool have adopted a cautious approach given the financial fall-out from the coronavirus -- stadiums will remain shuttered until at least October and probably longer.

Promoted Leeds, led by enigmatic boss Marcelo Bielsa on their return to the top-flight after a 16-year absence, provide intriguing opponents to measure if Liverpool's thirst for silverware has been quenched by their recent success.

Klopp's only addition to date is Greece left-back Kostas Tsimikas, but the Reds boss believes the continuity in Liverpool's squad will serve them well while their overhauled rivals try to gel.

"For some clubs it seems less important how uncertain the future is: those owned by countries, owned by oligarchs, that's the truth. We're a different kind of club," Klopp told the BBC.

"We cannot just change it overnight and say, 'so now we want to behave like Chelsea'.&nbsp;

"Now they are signing a lot of players. That can be an advantage of course but that means they have to fit together pretty quickly as well.

"It's about working together on the training ground. That will probably be an advantage for us."

Having exchanged angry words with Klopp and his coaching staff during Chelsea's defeat at Liverpool late last season, Lampard will have taken note of the latest jibe from Anfield.

But Lampard acknowledges Chelsea's lavish spending has put him under pressure to deliver a sustained title challenge after his promising first season in charge ended with an FA Cup final defeat against Arsenal.

"I know expectations will be there. I won't hide away from that," Lampard said. "I'm not going to lie, we have brought in a high level of player that we feel will improve our squad.&nbsp;

"At the same time, I also know what it takes to win the Premier League. We won't jump too far ahead of ourselves."

City and United will have to wait a week longer to play their first games of the season after being granted extra rest due to their involvement in the latter stages of European competitions last season.

Jurgen Klopp has warned Liverpool's title rivals that splashing out on new signings is no guarantee of success as the Premier League champions start their new campaign against Leeds on Saturday.

- 'Different kind of club' - In contrast, Liverpool have adopted a cautious approach given the financial fall-out from the coronavirus -- stadiums will remain shuttered until at least October and probably longer. "We cannot just change it overnight and say, 'so now we want to behave like Chelsea'. "Now they are signing a lot of players. That can be an advantage of course but that means they have to fit together pretty quickly as well. "It's about working together on the training ground. That will probably be an advantage for us." Having exchanged angry words with Klopp and his coaching staff during Chelsea's defeat at Liverpool late last season, Lampard will have taken note of the latest jibe from Anfield. But Lampard acknowledges Chelsea's lavish spending has put him under pressure to deliver a sustained title challenge after his promising first season in charge ended with an FA Cup final defeat against Arsenal. "I know expectations will be there. I won't hide away from that," Lampard said. "I'm not going to lie, we have brought in a high level of player that we feel will improve our squad. "At the same time, I also know what it takes to win the Premier League. We won't jump too far ahead of ourselves." City and United will have to wait a week longer to play their first games of the season after being granted extra rest due to their involvement in the latter stages of European competitions last season. Fixtures (1400 GMT unless stated): Saturday Fulham v Arsenal (1130), Crystal Palace v Southampton, Liverpool v Leeds (1630), West Ham v Newcastle (1900) Sunday West Brom v Leicester (1300), Tottenham v Everton (1530) Monday Sheffield United v Wolves (1700), Brighton v Chelsea (1915)

Klopp shrugs off rivals' spending as Premier League kicks off

After 16 years in exile, Leeds United are counting down the hours until their return to Premier League action, with their enigmatic manager Marcelo Bielsa guaranteed to steal the limelight.

Leeds face a baptism of fire when they visit Premier League champions Liverpool on Saturday for their first top-flight match since 2004.

But the prospect of pitting his wits against Reds boss Jurgen Klopp is unlikely to fluster Bielsa, who has cult hero status at Elland Road after masterminding Leeds' return to the Premier League in his second season in charge.

The 65-year-old Argentine, nicknamed 'El Loco' for his madcap antics, has awoken the sleeping giants with a unique style of management that defies convention.

Ignoring the perks of his lucrative profession, Bielsa lives in a small flat above a sweet shop, holds his staff meetings in a coffee shop and is often seen in his local supermarket.

Bielsa, who sits on an upturned bucket while watching matches, announced his arrival at Leeds' training ground by ordering his squad to pick up their litter.

He once told them to deliberately concede a goal after they scored when an Aston Villa player was injured, and became embroiled in an infamous spying scandal after dispatching an assistant to secretly watch Derby training.

But alongside his eccentricities, the former Marseille and Athletic Bilbao coach has charisma and focus that inspire devotion from his players and staff.

Bielsa's belief in using video analysis of games was ground-breaking at the time he introduced it and is now standard at all top clubs, while his ability to develop young players is also admired by his peers.

Leeds midfielder Kalvin Phillips is the perfect example of how Bielsa's alchemy can work wonders.

Phillips was miscast as a box-to-box workhorse before Bielsa's arrival.

Bielsa felt Phillips' skill-set was better suited to a holding role and the 24-year-old -- dubbed the "Yorkshire Pirlo" by Leeds fans -- has improved so quickly that he won his first England cap on Tuesday after playing a key role in his club's promotion.

"He videos every minute of every training session, the warm-ups, the tactical stuff, and will just tell us what we need to do in specific moments," said Phillips, who is the first Leeds player to be picked by England since 2004.

"He's just amazing and relentless at what he does. He's obsessed with making the players the best that he can. I think he's done that with me in the two years."

Yet for a manager hailed by Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola as the best coach in the world, Bielsa has found major trophies hard to come by.

Just three Argentine league titles and an Olympic gold medal, while in charge of Argentina in 2004, were all he had amassed before Leeds won the second-tier Championship.

Leeds' collapse when promotion was within reach in 2019 raised renewed questions about his notoriously demanding training regime, but the critics have been silenced by last season's masterful ascent to the top tier.

While Bielsa claims he does not want to be judged by the "tyranny of trophies", his time in the Premier League could serve as a rebuttal to those who say he does not deserve to be ranked alongside Klopp, Guardiola and Jose Mourinho.

After the dark days of administration and a spell in the third tier since they were last in the Premier League, Leeds are desperate to make a big impact on their return to the top-flight.

Leeds fans last celebrated the English title in 1992, two decades after the trophy-laden Don Revie era, and Bielsa's next challenge is to make his side a force to be reckoned with again.

"People have been intrigued by Bielsa, they want him in the Premier League," former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher told the Daily Mail.

"There's the mystique, everything about him is quirky. Even the spying stuff, I loved it. The fact he'd go to that extreme to win a game.&nbsp;

"You want different characters in the Premier League and he's certainly that."

Bielsa in spotlight as Leeds return to Premier League

Jose Mourinho is confident Tottenham will have a new striker before the end of the transfer window as he aims to build a squad capable of dealing with a brutal early-season schedule.

Spurs face having to play two midweek matches for two consecutive weeks later this month should they progress in the Europa League qualifying rounds and the League Cup.

"Yes I want, I need a striker but I want to make it clear, the club knows that I need a striker and they also want a striker," Mourinho said on Friday.

"Are we going to get one? I believe so. For the balance of the squad, the team needs it. Especially after the gift we had from the EFL (English Football League) and UEFA.&nbsp;

"We had an amazing gift that gives me after 20 years of football a unique experience of playing Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday-Sunday for two consecutive weeks."

Mourinho has already added Joe Hart, Matt Doherty and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to his squad but does not believe the presence of Harry Kane should discourage other strikers from joining Tottenham.

"I know we have one of the best strikers in the world, I know we have the best in England but I don't like the word 'back-up'," he added, speaking about problems in attracting a striker willing to be a reserve to the English captain.

<h2>- 'Best striker' Kane -</h2>

"A striker can play with Harry Kane -- a striker that comes here is not to be just feeling that he is in that back-up situation.&nbsp;

"So, yes we have the best striker in the country, but we want a striker who can give us more than we have and that is to play, and why not play with Harry?"

After hosting Everton to begin their Premier League campaign on Sunday, Spurs face the first of potentially three Europa League qualifiers with a trip to Bulgarian side Lokomotiv Plovdiv.

Should Mourinho's men progress they will play Leyton Orient or Plymouth Argyle in the third round of the League Cup on September 22 and then have another long Europa League trip to Romania or Macedonia two days later.

Win both ties and Tottenham will have to do the same again a week later.

One of Mourinho's main aims when he was appointed was to end Tottenham's 12-year trophy drought and he blasted the scheduling that puts their chances in two cup competitions at risk.

"It's not human. It is a big risk in terms of our ambitions first of all," he said.

"If we decide that one of these competitions is not important for us we go against the nature of the club, we go against our own nature, we go against our own ambitions, our rights to try and fight for the competition.

"Which professionals, who are the people, who are the illuminated who make these decisions?

"I would like to know who makes a team play Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday-Sunday-Tuesday-Thursday-Sunday. Do they want us to play with the youth team in the Carabao (League) Cup? That's my question."

Mourinho confident of landing new Spurs striker for 'non-human' schedule

Newcastle United said on Wednesday a Saudi-backed bid to takeover the club has now been rejected by the Premier League.

The investment group, which included the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), PCP Capital Partners and billionaire brothers David and Simon Reuben, said they had withdrawn their bid for the club in July after waiting months for the English top-flight's approval.

A&nbsp;£300 million ($391 million) deal to buy the side from unpopular owner Mike Ashley had been agreed in April.

However, the bid had attracted scrutiny due to the piracy of sports broadcast rights, including Premier League matches, in Saudi and the state's human rights record.

Amanda Staveley of PCP Capital Partners said when the bid was withdrawn that the Premier League wanted the Saudi state to become a director of the club as the PIF was not deemed to be an arm of the government.

"Newcastle United can confirm that the Premier League has rejected a takeover bid made by PCP Capital Partners, the Reuben Brothers and the Public Investment Fund of Saudi Arabia (PIF) based on its Owners and Directors test," Newcastle said in a statement.

"This conclusion has been reached despite the club providing the Premier League with overwhelming evidence and legal opinions that PIF is independent and autonomous of the Saudi Arabian government.

"The club and its owners do not accept that Premier League chief executive Richard Masters and the Premier League have acted appropriately in relation to this matter and will be considering all relevant options available to them."

Masters said in a letter to Newcastle Central MP Chi Onwurah last month that Staveley's consortium had refused the opportunity to take the issue over the status of the PIF to independent arbitration.

Supporters have long campaigned for Ashley to sell the club as they have been disillusioned with his 13-year spell as owner, which has included two relegations from the Premier League.

"Mike Ashley understands fans' frustrations and would like to reassure them that he has been fully committed to ensuring this takeover process reached completion as he felt it was in the best interests of the club," added the Newcastle statement.

"Mike continues to be fully supportive to (manager) Steve Bruce, the players and all the staff and wishes them well for the upcoming season."

Premier League chief executive Richard Masters said on Wednesday it will consider adapting its criteria for potential buyers after the failed takeover.

"We are going to look again at the owners' and directors' test and some of the issues and specifics of it," he told the BBC.

"It's time to have another look at it in light of recent events."

Saudi-backed takeover of Newcastle rejected by the Premier League

Just five months after <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> clubs consulted their players about taking a 30 percent wage cut, the English top-flight is again blowing Europe's other top leagues out the water when it comes to splashing the cash.

A return to the routine spending of tens of millions of pounds on players jars with the bleak forecasts often presented by the clubs themselves as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.

At the height of the pandemic, Liverpool and Tottenham planned to&nbsp;use government money to pay non-playing staff, only to back down in the face of public anger, while Arsenal announced proposals to cut 55 jobs just last month.

If Premier League clubs require a reminder that Covid-19 remains a threat, they need only look to the empty stands that will accompany the start of the new season from Saturday.

Gate receipts may only account for 13 percent of the Premier League's revenue, according to figures from UEFA's latest benchmarking report, but the other major streams of income such as television rights and commercial sponsorships are also not immune to the crisis.

A rebate worth a reported £330 million ($429 million, 363 million euros) was due to domestic and international broadcasters because the 2019/20 season was not completed on time after a three-month stoppage to the campaign.

Last week the Premier League announced its deal with Chinese streaming platform PPTV, understood to be worth about $700 million, had been cancelled, with political tensions between Britain and China potentially making a new contract difficult to negotiate.

European Club Association chairman Andrea Agnelli said on Tuesday that rebates owed to Champions League and Europa League broadcasters totalled 575 million euros, warning football was in "crisis-management" mode.

Agnelli, who is also the chairman of Italian champions Juventus, said the overall value of the transfer market could plummet by up to one third.

<h2>- Big-spending Chelsea -</h2>

Yet no such downturn has been noticeable among Premier League clubs.

Chelsea have led the way with a £200 million rebuild, signing Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell.

Manchester City have spent more than £60 million on two players in Nathan Ake and Ferran Torres who will struggle to start in Pep Guardiola's strongest XI, while Donny van de Beek could end up costing Manchester United&nbsp;around £40 million.&nbsp;

Even more striking are the sums spent by non-Champions League clubs.

Wolves broke their transfer record on a 40-million-euro capture, Portuguese teenager Fabio Silva, who had scored three goals and started one league match for Porto.

After spells together at Real Madrid and Bayern Munich, James Rodriguez and Carlo Ancelotti have been reunited at Everton, who have also signed midfielders Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure. The outlay for the three players is around £64 million.&nbsp;

Leeds announced their return to the Premier League by signing Spanish international Rodrigo and Germany's Robin Koch.&nbsp;

Newcastle, Crystal Palace and Leicester are also among those to have spent around £20 million on a single signing.

By contrast, even giants across Europe such as Real Madrid, Barcelona and Juventus are selling and seeking to cut wage costs.

The Premier League's lavish spending is due to a number of factors. Chelsea are making up for lost time after a transfer ban last summer, while they are also among the clubs seeking to make the most of a buyer's market.

For others such as Everton, the relaxation of financial fair play rules gives wealthy owners more opportunity to back their clubs.

The Premier League's TV deals worth around £3 billion a season are an even bigger economic advantage at a time when matchday and commercial revenue are shrinking.

But the rebates show how hundreds of millions can be wiped out, with the coronavirus threatening more disruption in the coming season.

Should a lack of caution in the transfer window come back to hurt Premier League clubs, there will be little sympathy shown from across the continent.

Premier League clubs forget coronavirus crisis in transfer splurge

LaLiga Santander made history on Wednesday, becoming the first European sports league to ring the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) opening bell. LaLiga president, Javier Tebas, and the country head of Banco Santander in Spain, Rami Aboukhair, rang the opening bell during the digital ceremony on Wednesday morning.

The NYSE bell ringing was carried out remotely due to COVID. The ceremony featured images of the crests of all of the LaLiga clubs. LaLiga's involvement, which was secured thanks to Banco Santander, underscores the organization's social, sporting and financial status on a global scale.

The honor represents LaLiga’s strategic international expansion efforts following the launch of LaLiga North America, the joint venture between LaLiga and Relevent Sports Group, two years ago. LaLiga North America has developed a regional strategy bringing LaLiga and its clubs closer to its fans, establishing partnerships and new revenue opportunities, and positioing itself as a leader in growing a foreign competition in the United States.&nbsp;

"We're delighted to have taken part in the virtual Wall Street bell ringing. The financial markets are Banco Santander's usual playing field and today sees us joined by LaLiga Santander, a competition which is about more than just football. It accounts for 1.4% of Spain's GDP and creates almost 200,000 jobs across the country. In short, it helps society to progress. And besides the business aspect, it's all about passion, entertainment and values, such as sacrifice, effort and teamwork, that we identify strongly with," commented Aboukhair.

"It's a source of pride for LaLiga and its clubs to virtually take part in the Wall Street bell ringing alongside our main sponsors, Banco Santander, in an event that once again highlights LaLiga's social standing, its internationalisation and contribution towards the Spain brand and the country's economy," declared Tebas.

In addition to the symbolic and traditional ceremony, the ringing of the NYSE bell, in the words of the financial institution , "is critical to the orderly functioning of the marketplace, assuring that no trades take place before the opening or after the close."

LaLiga's involvement, which was secured thanks to Banco Santander, underscores the organization's social, sporting and financial status on a global scale. The honor represents LaLiga’s strategic international expansion efforts following the launch of LaLiga North America, the joint venture between LaLiga and Relevent Sports Group, two years ago. LaLiga North America has developed a regional strategy bringing LaLiga and its clubs closer to its fans, establishing partnerships and new revenue opportunities, and positioing itself as a leader in growing a foreign competition in the United States. Manchester City midfielder Kevin de Bruyne has been named PFA Player of the Year for season 2019/20. The Belgian international becomes the first male Manchester City player ever to win the accolade that is voted for by his fellow professionals.

The midfielder, who also takes his place in the Team of the Year alongside former teammate and City legend David Silva, scored 16 goals and made 23 assists across all competitions – equalling Thierry Henry’s <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> record of 20 assists in one season. De Bruyne fought off competition from team-mate Raheem Sterling and Liverpool quartet Virgil van Dijk, Jordan Henderson, Sadio Mane and Trent Alexander Arnold to receive the coveted prize.

While both Izzy Christiansen and Lucy Bronze have won the women’s equivalent in previous campaigns, De Bruyne becomes the first City player ever to win the men’s award.

Speaking of his award, de Bruyne said: “It’s a huge honour. To be voted for by your colleagues and competitors from other teams who you play against and they vote for you for best player is amazing.

“It’s strange that I’m the first one at City given all the good players that have played here before and who are still playing here but it’s nice to represent the club.

“I think it is [the ultimate honour] because you compete against them, they want to win the trophies, they want to be the best. When they vote for you, and it’s everyone who is voting not just a few players, that means you’ve done really well during the season.”

Manager Pep Guardiola led the congratulations: “To win this award is an outstanding achievement, and Kevin is so deserving of it.

“To be recognised by other players is the most that any footballer can ask for, because they understand not only what it is to compete against you, but also the level of commitment it takes to play at the very top.

“There have been many great players in this club’s history, especially over the last decade working with Roberto, Manuel and myself. We have won many titles, but Kevin is the first to receive this prestigious award. This recognition is also a tribute to all the fantastic players who have come before him.

“We are so proud of Kevin and this will only strengthen what he means to this club and our fans. From all the players, coaches and staff at Manchester City, I would like to congratulate him.”

Kevin de Bruyne crowned PFA Player of the Year

Liverpool and Manchester City remain the teams to beat after three seasons of total dominance but a rejuvenated Manchester United and free-spending Chelsea could force themselves into a four-way race for the title.

AFP Sport looks at how last season's top four are shaping up ahead of the new season.

<h2>Liverpool</h2>

After a first league title in 30 years, Liverpool's challenge will change radically. The club have freed themselves from the burden of history but must ensure the 2020/21 season does not become a huge anti-climax.

A lack of fresh blood for the second consecutive season is a risk for Jurgen Klopp's men, who have amassed 196 points over the past two seasons.

Left-back Kostas Tsimikas is the only addition so far, as back up to Andy Robertson.

The financial fallout from the coronavirus pandemic meant the arrival of Timo Werner never transpired as the German instead headed for Chelsea, again leaving Liverpool with little as back-up for the front three of Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

However, ahead of a season that will offer precious little time for respite, Klopp has at least had longer to prepare his squad, with his three major title rivals involved in European action in August.

<h2>Manchester City</h2>

City will not have Lionel Messi to take the title fight to Liverpool after the Argentine opted to remain in Barcelona, but it is at the other end of the pitch that Pep Guardiola's men needed to improve anyway to bounce back from a disappointing campaign.

Despite scoring 17 more goals than Liverpool, the dethroned champions finished 18 points behind in second last season.

One addition to the defence has already been made, with the £40 million ($52 million) signing of Nathan Ake from Bournemouth to provide cover at centre-back and left-back.

A marquee central defender is expected to arrive at the Etihad before the window closes in October, with Napoli's Kalidou Koulibaly top of their wishlist.

Spanish international Ferran Torres had been added to a stellar cast of attacking talent to replace Leroy Sane, while David Silva's departure opens the door for 20-year-old Phil Foden to build on his impressive performances in the final stretch of last season.

City could be distracted by their desire to finally claim the Champions League in what could be Guardiola's final season in charge.

The Catalan is entering the final year of his contract and has been heavily criticised for failing to get City beyond the quarter-finals of Europe's top club competition over the past four years.

&nbsp;

<h2>Manchester United</h2>

United shot up to third in the second half of last season on the back of a 14-game unbeaten run in the Premier League after the January signing of Bruno Fernandes.

A flourishing young front three of Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood and more midfield depth with the signing of Donny van de Beek offers United some hope that they will not be left in the shade of their two biggest rivals, Liverpool and City, for much longer.

However, the manner in which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men ended the season in mid-August, physically exhausted after a Europa League semi-final defeat to Sevilla, raises questions over whether they can maintain a title challenge in a crammed calendar over the next nine months.

An ambitious attempt to land Jadon Sancho from Borussia Dortmund has stalled, leaving Solskjaer short on options beyond his preferred front three, while there is also a lack of cover in defence.

<h2>Chelsea</h2>

By far the biggest spenders of the transfer window across Europe, the Blues have splashed out nearly £200 million on Werner, Kai Havertz, Hakim Ziyech and Ben Chilwell and bolstered a leaky defence with the signing of former PSG and Brazil captain Thiago Silva on a free transfer.

More could still be to come with Rennes' Edouard Mendy reportedly top of Chelsea's list in their hunt for a new goalkeeper.

Frank Lampard achieved his main goal during his first season in charge by securing a place in the Champions League despite a transfer ban and the loss of Eden Hazard to Real Madrid.

But expectations on the former England international will be far higher this season as owner Roman Abramovich will demand to see a return on his investment.

Lampard cannot afford for the attacking talents of Werner, Havertz and Ziyech to take their time to adjust to the Premier League.

However, most importantly, he must find the right balance to improve a defence that conceded 54 goals last season, more than any other side in the top half of the table.

Liverpool, Man City face tough battle from Premier League challengers

Lionel Messi was back in full training with Barcelona on Wednesday for the first time since conceding defeat in his battle to leave the club.

Unlike Monday, when the 33-year-old Argentine superstar had to train alone under La Liga's coronavirus protocol, he joined up with the rest of the squad in the session taken by new coach Ronald Koeman.

A club statement reported that others returning to the main group were Philippe Coutinho,&nbsp;Sergio Busquets,&nbsp;Frenkie de Jong&nbsp;and&nbsp;Ansu Fati.

Messi faces another season with the Catalan club after losing his stand-off with Barca president Josep Maria Bartomeu over a 700 million-euro release clause.

The Argentinian superstar hit out at Bartomeu in his bitter announcement last week that he was staying and warned he was expecting to see progress, saying: "There is a new coach and new ideas. That's good, but then we have to see how the team responds and whether or not it will allow us to compete at the top level."

Adding to Messi's discomfort his two closest friends at Barcelona, Luis Suarez and Arturo Vidal, are expected to join Juventus and Inter Milan respectively.

Koeman's first match in charge since replacing Quique Setien in the aftermath of last month's humiliating 8-2 Champions League pounding by Bayern Munich is a friendly against third division opposition on Saturday.

After missing Portugal’s UEFA Nation League opener against Croatia, Cristiano Ronaldo was back among the goals as he surpassed the 100-goal mark for his country with a thumping brace on Tuesday. After becoming the second player ever and first European to reach the 100 international goals mark, Ronaldo has now set his sights on Ali Daei’s record of 109 goals. Ronaldo is now just eight goals away from equalising the record and nine away from becoming the all-time leading scorer in international football.

Ronaldo scored a stunning first-hall free kick before adding his second from open play in the 72nd minute of the match to close in on Daei’s record. However, Ronaldo is of the view that while he will go after Daei’s record, he is not obsessed about reaching the milestone. &nbsp;

"I managed to beat this milestone of 100 goals and now (I'll go) for the record. It's step-by-step. I am not obsessed because I believe the records come in a natural way," Ronaldo said after the match against Sweden.

"When I had this problem in my toe I always knew that I could recover for this second game. I like to be here, with this group of players, coach, staff and knew that they would play well in the first game as our squad is too good and no one is irreplaceable," added the 35-year-old.

Portuguese midfielder Bruno Fernandes said having Ronaldo back with the team was good for the players. Ronaldo have scored five times in his previous matches against Sweden.&nbsp;

"Yesterday he scored six or seven (free kicks) like that in training and today it went exactly the same way. It's so good to have Cristiano on the team," Portugal midfielder Bruno Fernandes said.

Ronaldo could have had a hat-trick easily but it was Swedish goalkeeper Robin Olson who made a terrific save in the 81st minute.

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood has apologised for the embarrassment caused by his breach of coronavirus regulations while on England &nbsp;duty in Iceland.

The 18-year-old said he had learned a lesson from the incident, which resulted in his being dropped from the squad for Tuesday's Nations League match in Denmark, along with Manchester City midfielder Phil Foden.

England manager Gareth Southgate refused to comment on the nature of the breach but media reports said the pair left the bio-secure bubble to meet two local girls.

Both players have been fined 250,000 Icelandic krona ($1,800, £1,350) by Reykjavik police and the Football Association said it would be launching a full investigation.

"Having now had the chance to reflect on what's happened, I can only apologise to everyone for the embarrassment I have caused," Greenwood said in a statement.

"It was irresponsible of me to break the Covid-19 protocols which are in place to protect players, staff and the public.

"In particular, I want to apologise to Gareth Southgate, for letting him down when he had shown great trust in me."

Greenwood added: "Playing for England was one of the proudest moments in my life and I only have myself to blame for this huge mistake.

"I promise my family, the fans, Manchester United and England that this is a lesson I will learn from."

Foden, 20, issued an apology on social media on Monday, saying he would learn a "valuable lesson".

With Lionel Messi deciding to stay at Barcelona, a campaign has been started to force a vote of no-confidence against club president Josep Maria Bartomeu. ‘Mes que una mocio’ (More than a motion), the group supported by next year’s presidential candidates have started a campaign to oust the Barcelona boss and have gathered already 7.500 signatures.&nbsp;

To successfully trigger the members voting process, the campaign needs to acquire at least 16,520 votes by September 17. If the campaign reaches the target and the vote of no-confidence motion is held then two thirds of the club’s 150,000 members would need to vote against Bartomeu to kick him out of the club and trigger an imminent election.&nbsp;

Messi saga: Campaign to remove Barcelona boss Josep Bartomeu gathers pace

Ansu Fati became the youngest goalscorer in the history of the Spanish national team on Sunday by scoring in Spain's 4-0 win over Ukraine.&nbsp;

Aged 17 years and 311 days, Fati scored in the 32nd minute at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium, when he cut in from the left and curled into the bottom corner.

It came after a spell-binding opening half an hour from the youngster, whose driving run had already earned a penalty for Sergio Ramos to convert.&nbsp;

Ramos then headed in to make it two before Fati made history on his first start for Spain, beating the country's previous youngest scorer, Juan Errazquin, who scored three goals aged 18 against Switzerland in 1925.&nbsp;

Manchester City's new signing Ferran Torres made it four late on as Spain registered their first victory in this season's Nations League to go top of League A's Group 4.&nbsp;

Luis Enrique's side had opened with a 1-1 draw on Thursday against Germany, whose second game ended in another 1-1 draw away at Switzerland.&nbsp;

Fati impressed off the bench against Germany, enough to be handed his first start by Luis Enrique on the left of Spain's front three.&nbsp;

He took his chance by putting on a mesmerising display, the only shame that there were no fans in the stadium to see it.&nbsp;

"At that age it's easy to get birds in your head," said Luis Enrique afterwards. "But&nbsp;he is mature enough to know that the path he is taking is the best to take as a player. He's quiet and humble."

<h2>- Fati confidence 'not normal' -</h2>

Fati is now the youngest player to score for Spain, for Barca in La Liga and the youngest to score in the Champions League as well.

"When we choose the squad, we don't look at the age," Luis Enrique added. "That doesn't mean you don't have to&nbsp;understand that he's going to play bad games and he's going to make lots of mistakes. It's part of learning but that kind of confidence isn't normal."&nbsp;

Born in Guinea-Bissau, Fati and his family moved to Seville when he was a young boy. He joined Barcelona's La Masia academy aged 10 and made his first team debut at the start of last season, becoming the second youngest player ever to play for the club.

He became the their youngest ever scorer in La Liga after scoring off the bench versus Osasuna and then scored on his first start for the Catalans too, against Valencia in September, aged 16.&nbsp;

The next day, Barcelona newspaper Mundo Deportivo wrote "A star is born" and he continued breaking records by hitting the winner against Inter Milan in the Champions League in December.&nbsp;

Fati was expected to be given his debut for Spain earlier this year but he had to wait as fixtures were postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.&nbsp;

Ukraine never got to grips with the winger, who won a penalty in the third minute, converted by Ramos, and then almost scored with a bicycle kick.&nbsp;

He fired wide of the far post after another darting dribble down the left and after Ramos headed in, he finally scored, cutting in from the left and ripping the ball into the far bottom corner.&nbsp;

Spain eased up in the second half but there was still time for a fourth, Torres finishing well at the back post to cap a memorable night.&nbsp;

Frank Lampard admits expectations at Chelsea will soar after an expensive recruitment drive ahead of the new Premier League season.

The Stamford Bridge club have spent nearly £200 million ($263 million) as they have brought in on Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz and Malang Sarr and could add even more new faces.

The former Chelsea midfielder is under no illusions that owner Roman Abramovich will expect improvements on last season.

The club finished fourth in the Premier League to secure Champions League qualification in Lampard's first campaign, but lost the FA Cup final to Arsenal and were thumped 7-1 on aggregate by Bayern Munich in Europe.

"I'm very aware that a club like Chelsea, even though we had a transfer ban, even though the year was difficult, expectations are going to go up hugely," Lampard told The High Performance Podcast.

"And I just have to accept that as part of the job, and try and go about my job as well as I can."&nbsp;

Lampard said he expected a "messy patch" that would challenge his managerial skills, now that the honeymoon period at Chelsea was over.

Chelsea will start their Premier League campaign away at Brighton on September 14.

"I think you have to be understanding that you're coming to the messy patch," Lampard said. "I think our messy patch probably happened actually back end of the season.

"I think we achieved a lot... because nobody expected us to come in the top four. But we lost a cup final, and then we lost to Bayern Munich.

"And it's a bitter taste for me, I go away and I have a bad feel about those games.

"So I understand that those issues and problems will come again. It's just that I, and we as staff, have to double down. We have to work harder."

Lampard expects added pressure after Chelsea spending spree

Gareth Southgate branded Phil Foden and Mason Greenwood "naive" after the England pair were sent home for a "serious" breach of coronavirus protocols in Iceland.

England manager Southgate responded to the breach by removing Manchester City midfielder Foden and Manchester United forward Greenwood from his squad for Tuesday's Nations League clash in Denmark.

Foden, 20, and Greenwood, 18, had made their senior England debuts in Saturday's 1-0 win against Iceland, but the pair will have to travel home separately from the rest of the squad, who were due to move on to Denmark on Monday.

Although Southgate refused to comment on the nature of the virus protocol breach, widespread media reports said the England pair met two local girls during their time in Iceland.

"Unfortunately this morning it was brought to my attention that the two boys have broken the Covid guidelines in terms of our secure bubble," Southgate told reporters.

"We had to decide they couldn't have interaction with the rest of the team and wouldn't be able to train. Given the procedures we have to follow now, they will have to travel back to England separately."

A Snapchat video released in Iceland appeared to show the players with female company.

Reports said Foden and Greenwood had brought the girls back to England's team hotel, but Southgate said that was not the case.

"Nothing has happened in the areas we occupy in the hotel. We are still getting to the depths of all the information because this was only brought to my attention a couple of hours before training, so I'm still getting to grips with the detail," he said.&nbsp;

"What is clear is there is a breach of the Covid-19 guidelines. I'm not gong into any more details until I'm aware of everything."

Southgate's scheduled media briefing was delayed by an hour as he and the Football Association scrambled to manage the situation, which the England boss only became aware of just hours earlier.

Acknowledging their antics were unacceptable given the current global concern about the coronavirus, Southgate said: "It is a very serious situation and we have treated it that way. They have been naive and we have dealt with it appropriately.

"We are not underestimating how important it is we keep the bubble the way we have."

&nbsp;

<h2>- 'Totally inappropriate' -</h2>

&nbsp;

Southgate said both players had apologised for their behaviour, but conceded they should have acted more responsibly.

"I recognise their age, but of course, the whole world is dealing with this pandemic and there is a responsibility on all ages that they do their part," he said.

"These are two boys I don't know particularly well at the moment so I cannot speak in great depth. I've got to try to speak with them later in the appropriate way.&nbsp;

"They have apologised but everything has happened so quickly and we have to get to the facts."

Asked if Foden and Greenwood, regarded as two of England's brightest young stars, would now face a battle to regain their place in the squad, Southgate added: "All of those things are too early, until I'm totally aware of every situation.&nbsp;

"I'm a father of young adults and I know they can get things wrong. We are not excusing that in this instance and we have to asses everything else moving forward."

City labelled their player's actions "totally inappropriate" and calling his behaviour "well below the standard expected of a Manchester City player".

United said of Greenwood: "We are liaising with the Football Association and are disappointed with the actions of Mason Greenwood over this situation."

The controversy was the last thing Southgate needed after he had to withdraw Harry Maguire from the squad following the Manchester United defender's part in a brawl in Greece.

Maguire was handed a suspended prison sentence and is appealing the verdict.

"All management roles are difficult and this is another level, in terms of what you have to deal and what is expected," Southgate said.

England's Foden, Greenwood sent home after 'naive' virus breach

Lionel Messi arrived at Barcelona's training ground on Monday as he begins to reintegrate with the team following his failed attempt to leave the club this summer.&nbsp;

Messi was seen driving into the Ciutat Esportiva in Sant Joan Despi at just after 4:00 pm (1400 GMT) on Monday, where he is expected to take part in training for the first time under new coach Ronald Koeman.

If he has passed his coronavirus test, Messi could also begin by training alone before joining the rest of the group later in the week.

The Argentinian superstar said on Friday in his explosive interview with Goal that he would continue to give his best for Barca, despite admitting defeat in his bid to depart for free.&nbsp;

The 33-year-old maintained he tried to go because he "wanted to live his last years of football happily" while also blaming the club's president Josep Maria Bartomeu for "breaking his word" and forcing him to stay.

The return of Barcelona's embittered captain and greatest ever player may not be an easy one, particularly given some of his closest team-mates are likely to be absent.&nbsp;

Luis Suarez, Messi's best friend and neighbour, as well as Arturo Vidal, are expected to join Juventus and Inter Milan respectively.&nbsp;

It will also be the first time Messi has trained under Koeman, who was appointed Barca's new coach last month.&nbsp;

"Now I don't know what will happen," Messi said on Friday.

"There is a new coach and new ideas. That's good, but then we have to see how the team responds and whether or not it will allow us to compete at the top level. What I can say is that I'm staying and I'm going to give my best for Barcelona."

<h2>- Long-term future in doubt -</h2>

Messi's decision to notify the club via burofax that he intended to leave came after he met with Koeman, talks that reportedly involved Dutchman taking a hard line with his top striker.&nbsp;

Koeman said in his first press conference that he "only wanted players who want to be here and to give everything".

And Messi refused to attend either a coronavirus test or Koeman's first week of pre-season training last week, as Messi's lawyers believed his participation would harm his case in a potential legal battle with the club.

But Messi opted not to go down that route, insisting he could never go to court against "the club of my life".

Yet his long-term future remains in doubt given Messi can talk to other clubs in January and leave for free when his contract expires on June 30.

If Messi passes his coronavirus test and restarts training without problems, he could feature in Barcelona's friendly against Gimnastic Tarragona on Saturday.

A more realistic reintroduction might be against Girona four days later.

It would be the first time Messi has played for the team since their historic 8-2 defeat by Bayern Munich in last month's Champions League quarter-finals.

Barcelona have been given an extra two weeks off to recover before they start their La Liga season against Villarreal, scheduled for September 27.

The 2020/21 LaLiga Santander season gets under way

The Lionel Messi saga finally came to an end when the Barcelona megastar announced that he will stay at the Camp Nou while respecting his contract with the club. However, the possibilities remain open that the six-time Ballon d’Or winner may leave on a free transfer at the end of 2020-21 season. Managing director of La Liga India Jose Antonio Cachaza on Monday said that there was life before Messi and there will be life after Messi while adding the Spanish league&nbsp;will continue to keep growing.&nbsp;

Cachaza said before Messi, La Liga was graced by the likes of Alfredo Di Stefano, Diego Maradona Zinedine Zidane among many others while adding they were blessed to have two best players in Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi dominate the last decade through the La Liga.

"There was life before Messi and there will be life after Messi. We were blessed with having two best players (Ronaldo and Messi). These two stars are approaching the end of their career. La Liga will keep growing and football is growing,” Cachaza said in a virtual press conference.

“La Liga just gave the legal answer to bring everything in official notice, we just made everyone aware about the Messi's contract. In the end how the process was solved, it shows we were right," he added.

Lionel Messi on Friday confirmed that he will continue his stay at Barcelona as he said that he doesn’t want to take the club he loves to the court. Messi, in an emotional interview, expressed how emotional was it when he told his wife and children that he wants to leave Barcelona.&nbsp;

Messi, earlier last week, had sent a burofax to Barcelona while requesting them to let him leave for free, as per a clause in his contract. However, Barcelona were adamant that the clause has expired and any club wanting to acquire Messi’s services will have to pay EUR 700 million release clause.

“When I communicated my wish to leave to my wife and children, it was a brutal drama,” Messi told Goal.

“The whole family began crying, my children did not want to leave Barcelona, nor did they want to change schools.

“But I looked further afield and I want to compete at the highest level, win titles, compete in the Champions League. You can win or lose in it, because it is very difficult, but you have to compete.

“At least compete for it and let us not fall apart in Rome, Liverpool, Lisbon. All that led me to think about that decision that I wanted to carry out.”

Messi further said that Barcelona president always said that he can leave anytime he wanted but now they made a u-turn that the contract clause that allows him to leave expired on June 10.&nbsp;

“I thought and was sure that I was free to leave, the president always said that at the end of the season I could decide if I stayed or not,” he said.

“Now they cling to the fact that I did not say it before June 10, when it turns out that on June 10 we were competing for La Liga in the middle of this awful coronavirus and this disease altered all the season.

“And this is the reason why I am going to continue in the club. Now I am going to continue in the club because the president told me that the only way to leave was to pay the €700 million (£624m/$823m) clause, and that this is impossible.”

Messi said he could have gone to court and find a way out of the club but reiterated that he loves this club for everything it has given to him and will never take Barcelona to court.&nbsp;

“There was another way and it was to go to trial," he added. “I would never go to court against Barca because it is the club that I love, which gave me everything since I arrived.

“It is the club of my life, I have made my life here.

“Barca gave me everything and I gave it everything. I know that it never crossed my mind to take Barca to court.”

The six-time Ballon d’Or further explained how his family reacted upon hearing that he wanted to leave Barcelona for a new club.

“Mateo is still little and he doesn't realise what it means to go somewhere else and make your life a few years elsewhere,” he said.

“Thiago, he is older. He heard something on TV and found out something and asked.

“I didn't want him to know anything about being forced to leave, to have to live in a new school, or make new friends.

“He cried to me and said ‘let's not go’. I repeat that it was hard, really.

“It was understandable. It happened to me. It is very difficult to make a decision.

“I love Barcelona and I'm not going to find a better place than here anywhere. Still, I have the right to decide. I was going to look for new goals and new challenges. And tomorrow I could go back, because here in Barcelona I have everything.

“My son, my family, they grew up here and are from here. There was nothing wrong with wanting to leave. I needed it, the club needed it and it was good for everyone.

“My wife, with all the pain of her soul, supported and accompanied me.”

Messi will now resume training for Ronald Koeman’s Barcelona as the club looks for a new chapter under a new manager.

La Liga hits back at Lionel Messi, says 'release clause still exists'

Lionel Messi on Friday issued a scathing statement via his father and agent Jorge Messi, addressed to La Liga boss Javier Tebas, stating that the EUR 700 million release clause doesn’t exist in Messi’s contract while criticizing La Liga’s ‘partial’ stance after they released a statement in support of Barcelona.&nbsp;

The statement issued by Jorge on behalf of his son Lionel, said La Liga has been partial in analyzing Messi’s contract and added they are baffled that the league said there will be legal ramification if the ‘termination clause’ is triggered at the end of 2019-20 season. The statement added that there is no release clause in Messi’s contract if the player wants to terminate the contract and walk out free at the end of 2019-20 season.

Moreover, on Thursday, it was revealed that Spanish police are investigating a case against Bartomeu with allegations that the Barca president hired a social media agency to post negative things about former and present club players.&nbsp;

IN PICS | Stay or go? Lionel Messi issues scathing statement to La Liga, says 'there's no release clause in his contract'

Luka Modric blows out his cheeks. "It would be a huge loss," he says. "Like when Cristiano left. But you can't think about the past. It's football and that's it."&nbsp;

Modric has faced Lionel Messi 21 times and is the only player since 2008 other than Cristiano Ronaldo to beat him to the Ballon d'Or. He knows what it would mean if he leaves.&nbsp;

"If it happens it will be a huge loss for the prestige of the league," he tells AFP. "But we need to go forward. Other players will become stars.&nbsp;

"When Ronaldo left, the same thing happened, the life of Real Madrid went on without him and it will be the same for Barcelona and La Liga without Messi."&nbsp;

After Ronaldo, Real Madrid needed two sacked coaches and the return of the old one to get back on their feet, a recovery still not complete as shown by a second consecutive exit in the Champions League last 16.&nbsp;

Messi's departure, even his unhappiness, would give Madrid an opening, not only to win La Liga again but to establish their own period of supremacy in Spain.&nbsp;

The first step is defending the title they won in July.&nbsp;

"We don't have a young team but we have an experienced team," says Modric. "We have young players, who will get better. I don't know if we will buy players but even if it stays like this, we have enough quality.

"We showed it in La Liga and we know we can do it again. After the suspension, we came back so motivated. We missed football, we missed winning games.&nbsp;

"We had worked so hard, I think physically we were the best team in the league and that's why we won it. It was my second La Liga title and I want to win more."&nbsp;

<h2>- Dressing room leader -</h2>

Modric was arguably Real Madrid's best player during the 11-game run-in, perhaps benefitting more than anyone from the three-month pause, after a period when he found himself rotated.&nbsp;

"I had two injuries that set me back and then other players took their opportunity," Modric says. "It wasn't easy for me, but maybe now Zizou sees it differently because I never gave up and in the end I was playing again. I feel well now, I feel fit, I feel motivated."&nbsp;

He turns 35 next week but Modric still feels instrumental to this Real Madrid, his calm masking an inner-steel that is well-suited to Zidane and perhaps symbolic of the team as a whole.&nbsp;

In his autobiography, 'My Game', released last month, Modric said Zidane urged him to be more of a leader and he has been supporting Eden Hazard during the Belgian's injury-ravaged opening year.&nbsp;

"Eden is a great guy and a special player," says Modric. "But he was playing with pain and when you're on the pitch, people always expect the best. They don't care if you have little problems.&nbsp;

"I spoke to him and said, 'Eden maybe you need not to play now and recover because next season we need you at your best. This is a season where you're getting to know everything but next season you need to be 100 per cent because if not, it's going to be difficult'.&nbsp;

"Hopefully he comes back without any problems and then I'm sure he'll show his potential and why the club bought him because we will need him a lot."&nbsp;

<h2>- Zidane 'one of the best' -</h2>

Hazard retains the confidence of Zidane but the same cannot be said for Gareth Bale, whose prospects look bleaker than ever if he stays.&nbsp;

Modric has spent 12 years playing with Bale, four at Tottenham and eight with Madrid, and he is one of those closest to the Welshman in the dressing room.&nbsp;

"Gareth is a great, great player," Modric says. "But his situation is not easy. He always has my support but he needs to decide what is best for him and what he wants to do now with his career.&nbsp;

"It was not an easy season for him but it is what it is. Maybe now he needs to get back to his best. Maybe to fight or... We'll see what happens with him."&nbsp;

Unlike Bale, Modric trusts Zidane absolutely, dismissing those who claim he is a motivator graced with good luck.&nbsp;

"He just perfectly understands players," Modric says. "He is one of the best coaches, definitely.&nbsp;

"What we have achieved is unimaginable and still people say it's because of luck or this or that, and they don't give him the recognition he deserves -- but he doesn't need it. His results speak for themselves."&nbsp;

Modric recalls one of his first meetings with Zidane in 2016, which he cites as a turning point in his career.&nbsp;

"I remember it word for word," says Modric. "He said, 'I see you as a player who can one day win the Ballon d'Or'. I'd never even thought about the Ballon d'Or before but when someone like Zizou tells you that, you feel so much confidence.&nbsp;

"It's why we've always had such a great relationship and I hope he stays at Madrid for a long, long time."&nbsp;

Luka Modric's autobiography, 'My Game', was released on August 20 in the UK, France and Spain.&nbsp;
