Pep Guardiola admitted it was vital to keep a clean-sheet as League Cup holders Manchester City got back on track with a 3-0 win against Burnley, while Manchester United joined their rivals in the quarter-finals after beating Brighton 3-0 on Wednesday.

Guardiola's side suffered their heaviest home Premier League loss under the Spaniard on Sunday when Leicester handed them a humiliating 5-2 defeat.

A brace from Raheem Sterling at Turf Moor ensured they washed away some of that bitter taste from that defeat and Spanish forward Ferran Torres, a close-season signing from Valencia, added City's third goal with his first for the club.

"It was important we didn't concede and the team was good in general," Guardiola said.

"When you lose a game the most important thing is the next one. Firstly, because if you lose in this competition, you're out.

"We are still far away from our best because we're not training much. We have a lot of players out, six because of Covid and four injuries.

"But step by step when we have all the squad we will get better. We are in the quarter-finals of this competition again so it's good."

City have won the League Cup four times in the last five seasons and they remain on course to retain the trophy.

Guardiola's men would have won by an even bigger scoreline but for a fine display from Burnley keeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell.

Sterling and Kevin De Bruyne both started in a strong City side that also included Riyad Mahrez and a debut for 18-year-old midfielder Cole Palmer.

Sterling made the breakthrough 10 minutes before the interval with a powerful strike from Benjamin Mendy's cross.

The City forward doubled his tally on 49 minutes, finishing off a good move involving De Bruyne and Torres.

City put the result beyond doubt in the 65th minute when Sterling failed to control a Mahrez pass and the ball ran through for the 20-year-old Torres to slam past Peacock-Farrell.

<h2>- 'Never surprised' -</h2>

At the Amex Stadium, Manchester United inflicted more misery on Brighton four days after beating them 3-2 in a dramatic Premier League game.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side needed a 100th minute Bruno Fernandes penalty to see off Albion on that occasion and conceding an equaliser moments early.

There was less drama this time as United made 10 changes and Brighton nine, with Solskjaer's stand-ins proving far superior.

United, who last won the League Cup in 2017, took the lead in the 44th minute when Scott McTominay headed home from Juan Mata's free-kick.

United doubled their advantage in the 73rd minute, with Donny Van De Beek finding Spanish midfielder Mata, who showed slotted home his 50th goal for the club.

Paul Pogba came off the bench to score seven minutes later when his free-kick curled in via a deflection off Brighton's Joel Veltman.

"A great performance by Juan Mata. He was the one who got on the ball and calmed us down. He was composed. He more or less creates the first goal himself. I am never surprised when he plays like this," Solskjaer said.

"We needed the first 20-25 minutes to get our confidence and get on the ball. We have worked on set pieces. You keep a clean sheet and this is important for a back four."

Dominic Calvert-Lewin hit a hat-trick as Everton thrashed West Ham 4-1, but the win was overshadowed by injuries to the Toffees' Brazilian stars Richarlison and Allan.

Calvert-Lewin put Everton ahead with his sixth goal of the season after 11 minutes after Goodison Park.

Carlo Ancelotti's side, who have won six consecutive matches in all competitions this season, were pegged back by Robert Snodgrass's 46th minute equaliser.

Richarlison restored Everton's lead 10 minutes later before Calvert-Lewin bagged his second treble already this season with goals in the 78th and 84th minute.

Newcastle survived a scare from fourth tier Newport before reaching the last eight with a 5-4 penalty shoot-out win after their 1-1 draw.

Man City, Man Utd ease into League Cup quarter-finals

Real Madrid missed the creativity of the injured Eden Hazard as only a fortuitous goal from substitute Vinicius Junior earned them a 1-0 victory over Real Valladolid in La Liga on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Vinicius capitalised on some chaotic defending in the Valladolid penalty area after coming on for Luka Jovic, Madrid's misfiring striker who was committed but ultimately fruitless again in front of goal.&nbsp;

"We know we have to improve and we are going to," said Zinedine Zidane.

Jovic could yet be allowed to leave before the end of the transfer window on Monday and he must have looked on enviously as a simple chance fell to Vinicius to give Madrid their second win of the season.&nbsp;

But the lack of goals only served to highlight the absence of Hazard, who had been due to make his first appearance of the season only to pull out of the squad earlier on Wednesday with a muscle injury in his right leg.&nbsp;

Hazard sat out Madrid's opening two games, with Zidane adamant the Belgium midfielder needed to be fully fit and completely pain free from the troublesome ankle problem he struggled with last term.&nbsp;

Yet a separate injury means Hazard is now expected to be out for at least another two weeks, leaving Madrid to cope without their 100 million euros ($117 million) signing, just as they had to for prolonged periods during his opening year.&nbsp;

"It's a little thing," said Zidane. "I don't know if it will be days or weeks but it isn't much."

With Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez gone, the attacking onus will fall on the likes of Vinicius, even if Zidane preferred to start with the Brazilian on the bench and give Jovic another chance to impress alongside Karim Benzema.

"We lacked a bit of rhythm, we needed to the move the ball faster," added Thibaut Courtois.&nbsp;

"If you don't move the ball fast, it's easy for them to defend. In the second half we were better."

Jovic, who has scored only two goals since joining from Frankfurt for 60 million euros in July 2019, could not be faulted for a lack of effort and was arguably Madrid's busiest attacking player in the first half.

But two good chances went begging and Zidane finally brought on Vinicius just before the hour.&nbsp;

Seven points from nine continues a solid start for the reigning champions, with Barcelona due to play away at Celta Vigo on Thursday.

Earlier, Atletico Madrid followed up their 6-1 thrashing of Granada on Saturday with a much less spectacular goalless draw away at Huesca.&nbsp;

Valladolid are still without a victory after four games, having only managed draws at home to Real Sociedad and Celta Vigo.

Jovic was involved early for Madrid, his driving run down the left giving Marcelo a sight of goal, before a speedy counter-attack ended with Fede Valverde sliding the ball across, but he fired over.&nbsp;

Jovic lashed into the side-netting after some good work by Luka Modric and then saw a header saved early in the second half, with Casemiro smashing the rebound against the crossbar.&nbsp;

With the game in the balance, Valladolid sniffed an opportunity. Waldo Rubio dragged wide from close range and then Shon Weissman raced forward and forced Courtois into a smart save.&nbsp;

But as the visitors were gaining in confidence, Madrid struck, Vinicius taking advantage of a string of defensive errors, the last committed by Bruno, his attempted clearance falling to the feet of the 20-year-old, who made no mistake.&nbsp;

Raul Garcia and Waldo went close to an equaliser before Modric hit the post late on.

Manchester City have announced the signing of Ruben Dias. The 23-year-old centre-back joins from Portuguese outfit Benfica, with Nicolas Otamendi moving in the opposite direction. Having undergone a medical in Lisbon prior to completing the deal, Dias arrived in Manchester on Monday.

A product of the Benfica academy, Dias enjoyed individual success at youth level, featuring in the UEFA European Under-19 Championship Team of the Tournament in 2016 and being named Cosme Damião Revelation of the Year the following season.

He went on to win both the Portuguese title and Super Cup during his three seasons in the first team, while also competing in the Champions League.

With 19 senior international caps already to his name, Dias won the inaugural UEFA Nations League in 2019 with his native Portugal. He was named man-of-the-match in the final and also featured in the team of the tournament alongside Cristiano Ronaldo, Virgil Van Dijk and City teammate Bernardo Silva.

Rúben Dias said: “To have the opportunity to join a club like Manchester City is a fantastic opportunity for me and one I couldn’t turn down. Their success speaks for itself. They have been the dominant team in England over the last few years, playing an attacking brand of football which I feel suits my own game.

“It is really exciting to be part of such a talented squad and to play for a world class manager like Pep Guardiola, who has a proven track record of developing young players like myself. “I believe I can improve here, at a club whose ambitions match my own and I will give everything to be successful and win titles.”

Txiki Begiristain added: “Ruben is a player we have admired for some time and we have been impressed with how he has progressed at Benfica. He has developed into a real leader and as a defender, he has all the attributes we are looking for. He is strong in the air, good in one v one situations and technically, he is very good, so we are confident he can thrive in our system.

“He is young but has gained valuable experience at a big European club in Benfica and we’re really pleased we’ve been able to sign him. He is another talented addition to the squad and someone who is only going to get better working under Pep.”

Lionel Messi called for "an end" to arguments at Barcelona as he urged unity at the club he tried to leave before the season.

The Barcelona captain spoke to Barcelona newspaper Sport in an interview published online late on Tuesday.

"After so many disagreements, I would like to put an end to it," said Messi.

"We must unite all Barcelona's people and assume that the best is yet to come."

Messi referred to his attempt to force Barcelona to release him from the final year of his contract after the disastrous end to last season left the club without a trophy.

"I take responsibility for my mistakes, that, if they existed, were only to make a better and stronger FC Barcelona," said the Argentine.

"I wanted to send a message to all the club members and to all the fans. If any of them is bothered for a second by something I said or did, they should never doubt that I am always thinking about what is best for the club."

"Adding passion and desire will be the only way to achieve our objectives, always united and pulling in the same direction," said Messi, who last Friday criticised the way Barcelona had let Luis Suarez go saying "the truth is nothing surprises me anymore."

Jose Mourinho believes players are being put in danger by the football authorities after Tottenham beat Chelsea 5-4 on penalties to progress to the quarter-finals of the League Cup after a 1-1 draw.

Mourinho's men were&nbsp;playing the second of four games in eight days in three different competitions.

Eric Dier was the only outfield player retained in the Tottenham team that started Sunday's 1-1 draw in the Premier League against Newcastle and the England defender had to dash from the field for a comfort break in the second-half.

"The number of minutes played is dangerous. What I did today with I Eric Dier today is very dangerous," said Mourinho, suggesting that dehydration could have led to the defender's problem.

"It should be forbidden to play two matches in 48 hours. What Eric Dier did is not human."

Timo Werner's first goal for Chelsea compounded Mourinho's woes in a dominant start from Frank Lampard's men.

But Erik Lamela deservedly levelled for Spurs seven minutes from time and new Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy was unable to stop Dier, Lamela, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, Lucas Moura and Harry Kane scoring from the spot.

Tammy Abraham, Cesar Azpilicueta, Jorginho and Emerson also converted their penalties as the first nine of the shootout were successful.

But Mason Mount's effort clipped the post to the delight of the watching Gareth Bale, who could be fit to feature in the last eight with the quarter-finals not till late December.

"Anything can happen on penalties," said Lampard. "You want to stay in these competitions of course but there's lots to like. We dominated the first half but the game changed (in the second-half)."

Mourinho claimed the fixture pile up gave him no choice but to prioritise Thursday's Europa League tie against Maccabi Haifa given the financial incentive on offer for the club.

"I told the players they should only think about this game, but I have to think about three games," added Mourinho, who faces another of his former clubs Manchester United in the Premier League on Sunday.

"I cannot believe in 48 hours we are playing a European game. The boys were absolutely phenomenal."

Lampard made eight changes, but Werner was one of those retained from the 3-3 draw at West Brom on Saturday and he took the opportunity to get his first goal for the club after a big money move from RB Leipzig.

Tottenham debutant Sergio Reguilon was twice at fault in the build up as he gifted possession to Azpilicueta and then dived in trying to block the Spaniard's cross, which allowed the Chelsea captain to pick out Werner at the edge of the box to arrow a shot into the bottom corner.

Lampard had won his previous three meetings against his former manager Mourinho and the tensions between the two flared during the first-half as they exchanged angry words on the touchline.

On the field, Spurs were the better side as Mendy made important saves from Lamela and Reguilon either side of half-time.

Mourinho showed his intent by introducing Kane from the bench with 20 minutes to go.

Moments later the Portuguese was marching down the tunnel after Dier as the defender made a dash to the dressing room before quickly returning.

Chelsea did not make the most of a brief period with an extra man as Callum Hudson-Odoi fired over and Werner's fierce effort was saved by Lloris.

"He wasn't happy but there was nothing I could do about it, nature was calling," said Dier of being pursued by Mourinho. "I heard there was a chance, but thankfully they didn't score."

Chelsea were punished when Lamela slotted home at the far post from Reguilon's cross to send the game to a shootout and ultimately Spurs into the last eight.

Mourinho bemoans 'dangerous' schedule as Spurs see off Chelsea

Less than six weeks Bayern Munich won last season's delayed final behind closed doors, the draw for the group stage of the next Champions League takes place on Thursday with the threat of the coronavirus pandemic again hanging over the competition.

Bayern were crowned European champions for the sixth time after beating Paris Saint-Germain at an empty Estadio da Luz in Lisbon in August.

The surreal occasion represented a triumph of sorts for UEFA. European football's governing body succeeded in playing its flagship competition to a conclusion despite the long shutdown caused by the health crisis, but the final rounds were not the same as with packed stadiums.

"A game like this without supporters is not the football that we know," lamented Bayern coach Hansi Flick. "Perhaps they can be back again in the future."

Thursday's draw is part of a ceremony which will also see the best men's and women's player of last season crowned.

UEFA had to ditch plans to stage the event in Athens and instead moved it to its own headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland, where the draw will go ahead without guests.

It is further evidence that, after the battle to get last season finished, things are not about to return to normal in Europe yet, and virus cases are exploding again.

But this time the football, it seems, will go on.&nbsp;

Both Bayern and PSG will be in the first pot of seeds along with Liverpool, Real Madrid, Juventus, Porto, Zenit Saint-Petersburg and Sevilla, the Europa League winners.

There is the prospect of plenty of enticing match-ups, with Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, Borussia Dortmund and both Manchester clubs all in the second pot, and Inter Milan, Atalanta, RB Leipzig and Marseille among the lower seeds.

But the excitement of the draw will be quickly tempered.

First, there is the realisation that almost all the leading clubs will make it through to the last 16 anyway, as they always do, removing much of the jeopardy from the early games.

<h2>- Pitfalls ahead -</h2>

As the pandemic continues to cast a shadow, it seems hard to imagine the final going ahead as scheduled in Istanbul next May in a full stadium.

UEFA experimented with the return of fans when around 15,500 attended last week's Super Cup between Bayern and Sevilla in Budapest.

"Health is the number one priority but we want to bring hope," said UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin. He added: "Fans and players are the essential part of football."

But with rules on large gatherings varying considerably from country to country, UEFA must decide how to approach the issue of crowds attending games in the Champions League and Europa League, the draw for which is on Friday.

UEFA's current stance is that games will be behind closed doors "until further notice".

It has adapted its rules. In the face of travel restrictions, it will allow matches on neutral territory. If a club suffers a Covid-19 outbreak, a game can go ahead as long as each team has at least 13 fit players including one goalkeeper.

The group stage starts on October 20, more than a month later than usual, and all six rounds of games will be packed into eight weeks.

However, in the event of more delays, UEFA has set January 28 as the deadline to complete the group stage.

Pitfalls lie ahead, but the draw offers a brief return to something like normality.

- Pitfalls ahead - As the pandemic continues to cast a shadow, it seems hard to imagine the final going ahead as scheduled in Istanbul next May in a full stadium. UEFA experimented with the return of fans when around 15,500 attended last week's Super Cup between Bayern and Sevilla in Budapest. "Health is the number one priority but we want to bring hope," said UEFA president Aleksander Ceferin. He added: "Fans and players are the essential part of football." But with rules on large gatherings varying considerably from country to country, UEFA must decide how to approach the issue of crowds attending games in the Champions League and Europa League, the draw for which is on Friday.

Bayern and rivals await Champions League draw as pandemic riddle remains

Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone believes Luis Suarez can lift the club to new heights and said his new signing will be in the squad to face Granada on Sunday.&nbsp;

Suarez has joined Atletico after being pushed out by Barcelona, who allowed the 33-year-old to leave for free, with only an extra 5 million euros due in variables.&nbsp;

"His arrival is an opportunity for us to keep growing as a club and to have new energy as a team," said Simeone.&nbsp;

"We spoke before he went to Barcelona at a time when the possibility came up that he might join us. The last six years he's had have been incredibly successful.&nbsp;

"His teammates want to make him settle in as quickly as possible so his goals and game can help us win."&nbsp;

Simeone said Suarez trained with his new side on Friday and is in line to make his debut against Granada at the Wanda Metropolitano this weekend.

"Yesterday he had a long day, he finished training very well with the team," said Simeone.&nbsp;

"He seems to be so motivated and excited and of course he will be in the squad, available for the team. Tomorrow we will see if he starts or comes on in the second half."&nbsp;

Suarez has said he was drawn to the possibility of competing at the highest level with Atletico and proving he is still among the best strikers in the world.&nbsp;

"I'm going to be honest, he was convinced from the first moment&nbsp;that this was the place for him to keep being a force, to keep showing he is still a great striker and to be able to keep sustaining the years he had at Barcelona," said Simeone.

"I found in him what we need in this club, a dream and a desire to be here. When people come here with that kind of motivation, things always go well for them."&nbsp;

<h2>- Morata replacement -</h2>

Suarez's arrival means Atletico have secured an instant replacement for Alvaro Morata, who moved to Juventus on loan.&nbsp;

Suarez scored 21 goals last season for Barcelona while Morata hit 16 for Atletico.&nbsp;

"We all know what Luis brings. He is a focal point, he's great with his back to goal, his movement inside the box creates chances," said Simeone.&nbsp;

"When we knew Alvaro might leave we decided the best way to continue would be to look for someone who scored even more goals last season.&nbsp;

"It wasn't easy to think of a replacement for Alvaro but when the possibility of Suarez came up, the numbers spoke for themselves."&nbsp;

Simeone will be in the dug-out on Sunday, having recovered following his positive test for coronavirus.&nbsp;

"We had the support of the doctors, who also tried to make sure I wasn't too far from what the team was doing despite my absence, which I also think might perhaps even be beneficial," said Simeone.&nbsp;

"After so many years of working every day with the players, having 15 days away perhaps could have been good too.&nbsp;

"Then when they say you have tested negative, you feel joy, enthusiasm, emotion, and incredibly appreciative of that excitement you always feel for the start of the season."&nbsp;

Crystal Palace manager Roy Hodgson lambasted the interpretation of the handball rule after his side became the latest victim of a soft penalty award in a 2-1 defeat by Everton on Saturday.

Carlo Ancelotti's men extended their perfect start to go top of the Premier League as Richarlison's controversial spot-kick split the sides after Cheikhou Kouyate cancelled out Dominic Calvert-Lewin's fifth goal of the campaign.

Eagles defender Joel Ward was penalised for handball after the video assistant referee advised Kevin Friend to consult the pitchside monitor.

"I have to make bold statements, which I make no apologies for. I have despair about a rule that I believe is ruining the game of football," said Hodgson.

The former England manager was equally scathing of the easy awarding of penalties for handball when his side were the beneficiaries for their second goal in a 3-1 win at Manchester United last weekend.

"I predict what will happen is players will start flicking the ball on to a hand and screaming handball," added Hodgson. "A really good game destroyed by a decision."

Everton held on in the second half to make it three successive league victories and five wins in a row in all competitions, suggesting they could be contenders for a top-four finish.

"It is good to see the spirit in the team in this moment. We have started the season well," said Ancelotti.

"We have to look only for the momentum, that is good in this moment. In a busy time with another game on Wednesday, we have to keep the motivation, ambition and we are doing really well. The danger is behind us all the time when we do not behave properly."

The visitors went ahead with their first serious attack in the 10th minute.

Colombian playmaker James Rodriguez unfurled a sublime pass into Seamus Coleman and the captain cut back for Calvert-Lewin to net with conviction.

Palace hit back in the 26th minute when Kouyate got between Michael Keane and Richarlison to head his second goal for the club.

The Eagles richly deserved it and yet they were almost immediately pegged back when VAR had to look at a handball incident involving Ward on the half-hour mark.

Richarlison's cross had hit the Palace full-back on the shirt sleeve and it was not deemed a spot-kick, but it was only a brief let-off for Hodgson's men.

In the 40th minute, James's superb pass was headed by Lucas Digne onto Ward's hand in the penalty area.

Friend pointed to the spot after using the pitchside monitor and Richarlison fired into the corner to put Everton back in front.

Calvert-Lewin should have grabbed his sixth goal of the season and put the game to bed in the 51st minute, but his effort from James's corner sailed wide.

As rain poured down in south London, Palace pressed for an equaliser, with Wilfried Zaha and Ebere Eze having shots blocked.

Hodgson claims rule changes 'ruining' football as Everton get helping hand

Sergio Ramos scored a late penalty as Real Madrid came from behind to scrape a 3-2 win against 10-man Real Betis, their first La Liga victory of the season.&nbsp;

Betis were ahead at half-time after two goals in two minutes from Aissa Mandi and William Carvalho overturned Fede Valverde's opener for the reigning champions.

But Betis defender Emerson, who is on loan from Barcelona, endured a nightmare start to the second half by scoring an own-goal and then being sent off for knocking over Luka Jovic after the striker had been sent clear.

VAR again intervened in Madrid's favour in the 82nd minute as Marc Bartra was adjudged to have cleared with his arm, leaving Ramos to chip in the winning penalty.

Betis were fuming at referee Ricard de Burgos at full-time and while the red card seemed fair, they were unlucky to concede the penalty, with Bartra seemingly nudged into the ball by Madrid's Borja Mayoral.&nbsp;

Madrid, though, breathed a sigh of relief, their opening win secured having kicked off the season with a goalless draw away at Real Sociedad last weekend.

"I'm not getting into the referees," said Zidane. "We suffered of course but in the end we got the three points."

Ramos converting from the spot felt familiar after his three penalties during Madrid's run to the title last term but this was an uncharacteristically sloppy defensive display from Zinedine Zidane's side.

It was the first time they had conceded twice in the first half of a league match since Zidane returned as coach 18 months ago and it would have cost them had their opponents been less generous.

Defeat for Betis ends what had been a perfect start under new coach Manuel Pellegrini, after two wins out of two against Alaves and Real Valladolid.

"From Madrid's first goal to the end of the first half we were much superior," said Mandi. "But we weren't able to get a clean sheet in the second half."

Victory for Madrid puts early pressure on Barcelona, who begin with Lionel Messi back in the fold at home to Villarreal on Sunday. Atletico Madrid also play their first game on Sunday at home to Granada.

Eden Hazard was still absent in Seville, not even included on the bench as Zidane continues to insist the Belgian regain full fitness before returning to action.

Jovic was given a rare start up front but the Serb missed a good chance before going off in the second half and it would not be a surprise if he departed before the end of the transfer window.

Benzema made Madrid's opener, refusing to give in down the right, where he wriggled into space and crossed for Valverde to fire in at the near post.

Ramos should have made it two but lashed wide from eight yards out and then Betis found their rhythm, exerting more and more pressure as the half wore on.

They equalised when Mandi climbed above Casemiro to head in a cross from the excellent Sergio Canales, who then initiated a second two minutes later, spreading left to Nabil Fekir, who laid off for Carvalho to power through and drive home.

But Madrid were level three minutes after the restart as Emerson poked Carvajal's cross into his own net and then the Betis defender was sent off, ajudged to have bundled into the back of Jovic, who had been put through by Benzema.

Ramos bent the free-kick wide, Benzema feathered past the post and substitute Borja scuffed a finish, only for De Burgos to review and decide the stumbling Bartra had diverted the ball away with his arm. Ramos made no mistake.

Valencia's poor start to the season under new coach Javi Gracia continued as they were held earlier to a 1-1 draw by newly-promoted Huesca. Real Sociedad eased past Elche 3-0 while it finished goalless between Alaves and Getafe.

Ramos penalty snatches win for Real Madrid over Betis

Veteran midfielder Javi Martinez admitted it was "a dream" to be able to write more UEFA Super Cup history for Bayern Munich on Thursday as his header in extra time sealed a 2-1 win over Sevilla in Budapest.

Having equalised with a crucial 120th-minute goal seven years ago when Bayern won the 2013 Super Cup on penalties against Chelsea in Prague, Martinez struck on 104 minutes at the Puskas Arena to hand the Champions League winners a fourth title in 2020.

There were a smattering of travelling Bayern and Sevilla fans among the 15,180 crowd in Budapest as both clubs played for the first time in front of spectators since the Covid-19 pandemic first hit Europe in March.

After Lucas Ocampos converted an early penalty for Sevilla, Leon Goretzka equalised for Bayern, who had two second-half goals disallowed before substitute Martinez, 32, struck from a late corner.

Bayern head coach Hansi Flick praised his team for "pulling through with their mentality. In the end, my players went through the pain barrier to win."

Having replaced Goretzka on 99 minutes, it was Martinez - linked to a return to Spain after losing his first-team place - whose header extends Bayern's winning streak to 23 games dating back to February.&nbsp;

"Whenever I wear the Bayern shirt, I always try to give my best and I showed that once again today," Martinez told Sky.

"I always want to help the team by scoring a goal. It's a dream come true.

"I'm really happy to win this trophy for a second time after also scoring in 2013."

After also sweeping the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League trophies, Bayern can win a fifth title this year when they host Borussia Dortmund in Munich for the German Super Cup on Wednesday.

<h2>- Rakitic regrets -</h2>

Sevilla midfielder Ivan Rakitic said Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made the difference with two superb late saves to deny Youssef En-Nesyri.

"We saw tonight how important Neuer is for them," said Rakitic.

"We had two great chances to go ahead, but he stopped them.

"Then we gave away a silly corner and they scored. Nevertheless, we can be proud of how we played against the best team in Europe."

Champions League winners Bayern fell behind for the first time this season on 14 minutes when the VAR judged David Alaba had fouled Rakitic in the area and Ocampos converted Sevilla's penalty.

Alaba was booked for the challenge and there were nervous glances in the Germans' ranks, especially when defender Benjamin Pavard and Thomas Mueller both missed chances.

Goretzka got Bayern back on level terms when Mueller and Robert Lewandowski combined in the area for the midfielder to smash home the equaliser with 34 minutes gone. &nbsp;

It stayed 1-1 at the break, but Bayern turned up the heat on the Europa League holders.

Just six minutes after the break, Lewandowski had the ball in the net after being set up by Thomas Mueller, but the VAR spotted the Poland striker was offside.

<h2>- Happy Neuer -</h2>

With an hour gone, Bayern winger Leroy Sane was left frustrated after his shot powered past Sevilla's Moroccan goalkeeper Bono, but the VAR spotted Lewandowski had fouled a Sevilla defender in the build up.

With 90 minutes almost up, Manuel Neuer underlined his status as one of the world's best goalkeepers with a finger-tip save to deny En-Nesyri after Sevilla attacked from the edge of their own penalty area.

Sevilla made a great start to extra-time with Bayern in all sorts of trouble, as Ocampos had a shot blocked while En-Nesyri's shot clipped the post after crashing off Neuer's leg.

However, the scene was set for Martinez, a veteran of the side which won the 2013 Champions League final in London, to add to his chapter in Bayern's folklore.

"I was so happy when the coach brought Javi on, because I know how good he is with his head from set pieces," said Bayern captain Neuer.

"Sevilla are a well-drilled team, it's not easy to play against them, but overall we deserved the win and can be proud of ourselves."

Bayern head coach Hansi Flick praised his team for "pulling through with their mentality. In the end, my players went through the pain barrier to win." Having replaced Goretzka on 99 minutes, it was Martinez - linked to a return to Spain after losing his first-team place - whose header extends Bayern's winning streak to 23 games dating back to February. "Whenever I wear the Bayern shirt, I always try to give my best and I showed that once again today," Martinez told Sky. "I always want to help the team by scoring a goal. It's a dream come true. "I'm really happy to win this trophy for a second time after also scoring in 2013." After also sweeping the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League trophies, Bayern can win a fifth title this year when they host Borussia Dortmund in Munich for the German Super Cup on Wednesday. - Rakitic regrets - Sevilla midfielder Ivan Rakitic said Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer made the difference with two superb late saves to deny Youssef En-Nesyri. "We saw tonight how important Neuer is for them," said Rakitic. "We had two great chances to go ahead, but he stopped them. "Then we gave away a silly corner and they scored. Nevertheless, we can be proud of how we played against the best team in Europe." Champions League winners Bayern fell behind for the first time this season on 14 minutes when the VAR judged David Alaba had fouled Rakitic in the area and Ocampos converted Sevilla's penalty. Alaba was booked for the challenge and there were nervous glances in the Germans' ranks, especially when defender Benjamin Pavard and Thomas Mueller both missed chances. Goretzka got Bayern back on level terms when Mueller and Robert Lewandowski combined in the area for the midfielder to smash home the equaliser with 34 minutes gone. It stayed 1-1 at the break, but Bayern turned up the heat on the Europa League holders. Just six minutes after the break, Lewandowski had the ball in the net after being set up by Thomas Mueller, but the VAR spotted the Poland striker was offside. - Happy Neuer - With an hour gone, Bayern winger Leroy Sane was left frustrated after his shot powered past Sevilla's Moroccan goalkeeper Bono, but the VAR spotted Lewandowski had fouled a Sevilla defender in the build up.

Martinez hands Bayern 'dream' UEFA Super Cup win in front of 15,000 fans

Manchester United and Chelsea need a swift response to their title credentials being damaged by home defeats last weekend, while one or both of Liverpool and Arsenal's perfect records will come to an end when they face off at Anfield on Monday night.

Crystal Palace and Everton also have the chance to claim top spot when they meet at Selhurst Park on Saturday, while the other side with maximum points from the opening two weekends, Leicester, face a daunting trip to Manchester City.

Gareth Bale will not be fit to feature to Tottenham when they host Newcastle on Sunday, but Harry Kane and Son Heung-min are enough for the Magpies to fear after the England captain set up the South Korean to score four at Southampton.

Chelsea travel to bottom-of-the-table West Brom, who are still seeking their first point back in the top-flight.

AFP Sport looks at some of the main talking points ahead of this weekend's action.

<h2>Mayday for Man Utd?</h2>

Optimism that United could return to challenging for the title after a 14-game unbeaten run to end last season was washed away with that unbeaten record as Palace were good value for their 3-1 win at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men looked desperately short of match sharpness having had barely two weeks of pre-season training.

A month-long off season was also disruptive off the field with captain Harry Maguire being handed a suspended prison term in Greece, which he is appealing, and teenage striker Mason Greenwood being sent home by England for breaching coronavirus protocols when on international duty.

There is also outcry among the United fanbase at a lack of signings in the transfer market, while their rivals still spend freely despite the economic affects of the pandemic.

The Red Devils desperately need three points at Brighton on Saturday to bring some calm, but the Seagulls have shown enough in their opening two games to suggest United face a far tougher test than when they won 3-0 on the south coast in June.

Brighton were the better side for long spells despite losing 3-1 to Chelsea on the opening weekend and bounced back with a comprehensive 3-0 win at Newcastle.

United did manage to get past Championship side Luton in the League Cup on Tuesday despite Solskjaer making 10 changes, but the Norwegian needed to bring on Bruno Fernandes, Marcus Rashford and Greenwood in the latter stages to kill the tie off with Rashford and Greenwood getting on the scoresheet.

"We need to get competitive games and minutes into the legs of our players because normally we're in a pre-season after such a short training (period)," said Solskjaer.

"It's great for them to get minutes as well but also goals."

<h2>More motivated Everton shine</h2>

Everton's investment in the transfer market is reaping immediate rewards as they have won their opening two league games of the season for the first time in seven years.

Carlo Ancelotti has been able to recruit Champions League-winning quality in James Rodriguez, alongside Brazilian international Allan and Abdoulaye Doucoure in midfield.

"The players have come back with more ambition and motivation," said Ancelotti after finishing 12th last season. "The new signings have helped us be more motivated."

Palace will provide an early test of how far Ancelotti's men can go this season as they have picked off Southampton and United at ease on the counter-attack with Wilfried Zaha rediscovering his best form to score three times in two games.

<h2>Third time lucky for Liverpool?</h2>

Arsenal have got the better of Liverpool twice in recent months, but the acid test for Mikel Arteta's side comes at what he described as the "toughest place to go in the world", Anfield, on Monday.

The Gunners rode their luck to beat the Reds after Jurgen Klopp's men had sealed the title last season, but the Community Shield clash between the two a month ago was a far more balanced game, which Arsenal won on penalties after a 1-1 draw.

Arsenal have built on their momentum from winning the FA Cup by beating Fulham and West Ham to strengthen the conviction that Arteta can lead them back into the top four this season.

But Liverpool showed in sweeping aside Chelsea 2-0 at Stamford Bridge last weekend that they remain the team to beat and have only strengthened with the signing of Thiago Alcantara.

Man Utd aim to bounce back as Arsenal face acid test at Liverpool

Tottenham Hostpur manager Jose Mourinho was involved in a fun incident before their UEFA Europa League match against Shkendija after the Portuguese, after being alerted by his keepers, found out that the size of the goalposts were smaller than the actual size allotted by FIFA.

Spurs goalkeepers Hugo Lloris and Joe Hart noticed the dimensions had some errors and told Mourinho, who took the matter up with UEFA’s delegates at the match. Following the match, Mourinho posted photograph of himself on Instagram as he was seen nearly touching the crossbar.

“Before the game was a funny situation because my goalkeepers told me that the goal was small,” said Mourinho after goals from Erik Lamela, Son Heung-min and substitute Harry Kane fired his side to a 3-1 victory.

Mourinho, Spurs goalkeepers spot 'small goalposts' before Europa League match

Teenage Manchester City striker Liam Delap said being named in the starting lineup for Thursday’s League Cup clash against Bournemouth caught him off guard but that he would be smiling for weeks after marking his senior debut with a goal.

Delap, the son of former Stoke City defender Rory, scored the opener for Pep Guardiola’s side in the 2-1 win at the Etihad Stadium, running on to Phil Foden’s through ball and firing past Bournemouth goalkeeper Mark Travers.

“It was a bit of a shock to be put in the starting line up but I took it with a pinch of salt and just worked my hardest,” the 17-year-old told BBC.

“I was buzzing to get the call up and to top it with a goal, I can’t ask for much more.”

“I need to keep working hard in training and look to take every opportunity I get. It will take a few weeks to stop smiling.”

With Sergio Aguero still battling a knee injury, Guardiola said Delap would have more opportunities to impress.

“We have just 13 players fit. With the problems we have up front, he will stay with us. We will use him,” Guardiola said. “At 17, Liam is a different striker to what we have in terms of physicality.

“We see in training how good a finisher he is. Now is the time to be calm and keep working. We are delighted with his performance.”

Paris Saint-Germain winger Angel Di Maria received a four-match ban on Wednesday for spitting during this month's fiery Marseille game which saw five players red-carded and claims by Neymar of racial abuse.

Di Maria's suspension meted out by Ligue 1's disciplinary commission was for spitting at Marseille defender Alvaro Gonzalez.

It takes effect from September 29, meaning he can play against Reims on Sunday, returning the weekend of November 8.

Neymar's accusation that Gonzalez racially abused him will be investigated on September 30, the commission announced.

Neymar was sent off for slapping Gonzalez on the back of the head, accusing the Spaniard of calling him a "monkey". Gonzalez denies the charge.&nbsp;

The world's most expensive player was served with a two-match ban last week for that incident in the September 13 fixture at the Parc des Princes.

Also last week PSG defender Layvin Kurzawa incurred a six-match ban for kicking out at Marseille left-back Jordan Amavi, who was hit with a suspension of three games after he too was dismissed.

And Leandro Paredes was banned for two games after he was sent off for a clash with fellow Argentine Dario Benedetto, who was also red-carded and suspended.

Marseille won the game 1-0.

The French league's disicplinary commission is also investigating accusations that Neymar made racist remarks towards Marseille's Japanese right-back Hiroki Sakai and made a homophobic slur against Gonzalez.

Any player found guilty of racist or discriminatory abuse risks a ban of up to 10 matches.

Chelsea manager Frank Lampard was impressed by Kai Havertz’s performance on Wednesday after he netted a hat-trick in their 6-0 League Cup win over Barnsley and said it was just the first of many great nights to come from the Germany international.

Havertz struggled in Premier League games against Brighton and Hove Albion and Liverpool but showed on Wednesday why Chelsea spent 71 million pounds ($90 million) to get him from Bayer Leverkusen.

“I said in the last two games that Kai has had no pre-season and in signing for the club, I think it took a few days out as well,” Lampard told reporters.

“We had to play him because we had a few injuries and tonight was a great exercise and another game for him to see how we work off the ball, to be part of that.

“The combinations he had with Tammy Abraham, the way he grew into the game and had confidence and the three goals. It was a great night for Kai and the first of many for him.”

Lampard also confirmed that Senegal goalkeeper Edouard Mendy had completed his medical ahead of his move from Rennes.

Lampard expects many more big nights from Havertz

Chelsea on Thursday announced the signing of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy from Rennes on a five-year deal for a reported fee of £22 million ($28 million).

The Senegal international will compete for a starting spot with Kepa Arrizabalaga, who has struggled for form and confidence at Stamford Bridge.

He is Frank Lampard's seventh senior signing of a busy summer following the arrivals of Timo Werner, Hakim Ziyech, Ben Chilwell, Kai Havertz, Thiago Silva and Malang Sarr.

"I am so excited to be joining Chelsea," said Mendy. "It's a dream for me to be a part of this exciting squad and to work with Frank Lampard and all of his coaching staff.&nbsp;

"I look forward to meeting my team-mates and can't wait to get started."

The 6 feet 5 inch (1.96 metre) stopper kept nine clean sheets in 24 Ligue 1 appearances last season, helping the Bretons to finish third and qualify for the Champions League for the first time in their history.

Although born in France, Mendy, 28, opted to represent Senegal at international level.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia said: "As soon as Petr Cech (technical and performance advisor) and our technical team identified Edouard as the most suitable goalkeeper to complement our existing group, there was only one player we wanted to bring in.

"Edouard arrives following a season of real success with Rennes. He is ambitious for more, and we welcome him to our club."

Kepa, who cost Chelsea £72 million in 2018, has proved error-prone and was dropped twice by Lampard in favour of 38-year-old Willy Caballero last season.

He made another high-profile mistake against Liverpool on Sunday, gifting possession to Sadio Mane for his second goal.

Chelsea sign Rennes goalkeeper Mendy

Manchester United moved into the League Cup fourth round with a 3-0 win at Luton, while West Ham boss David Moyes and two of his players contracted the coronavirus ahead of their 5-1 victory against Hull as the pandemic caused chaos on Tuesday.

Moyes, Josh Cullen and Issa Diop all left the London Stadium after learning of the tests before kick-off and will self-isolate, with the trio said to be asymptomatic.

West Ham were not the only Premier League club affected by the virus as Tottenham's tie at Leyton Orient was postponed after their fourth tier opponents suffered a Covid-19 outbreak.

West Ham's match went ahead as planned despite the virus tests, with assistant manager Alan Irvine taking charge of the Hammers.&nbsp;

"At 20 past six we suddenly got some information from our doctor and head physio to say there were three positive tests, the manager and the two players," Irvine said.

"We'd had contact insofar as we were in the same area of the stadium as David.

"We were shocked by the news. We've had so many tests and not had any positive. But we've been very particular about protocol right from the start."

Sebastien Haller and Andriy Yarmolenko both struck twice for West Ham after Robert Snodgrass opened the scoring.

West Ham will play Fleetwood or Everton in the last 16.

The news of the virus striking at football's heart came after British Prime Minster Boris Johnson dealt a major blow to the sport's financial future on Tuesday.

Johnson said fans would not be allowed back into stadiums in October as originally planned due to a spike in virus cases, measures that will remain in place for "perhaps six months".

At Kenilworth Road, United bounced back from a dismal 3-1 home defeat against Crystal Palace in their Premier League opener on Saturday.

In United's first meeting with Championship side Luton since 1992, boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made 10 changes, giving full debuts to goalkeeper Dean Henderson and close-season signing Donny Van De Beek.

United went ahead in the 44th minute when George Moncur fouled Brandon Williams and Juan Mata dispatched the penalty.

Henderson is hoping to replace the error-prone David De Gea after an impressive loan at Sheffield United last season.

He preserved United's advantage with his only save of the match in the final minutes, keeping out Tom Lockyer's header at the far post.

Marcus Rashford came off the bench to net in the 88th minute before fellow substitute Mason Greenwood's stoppage-time goal put a flattering gloss on the scoreline.

"Going through is the big thing. There are some positives, the keeper does his job and we scored some nice goals towards the end," said Solskjaer, whose side will travel to Brighton or Preston in the fourth round.

Henderson tweeted: "I dreamt about this my whole life. Unbelievable feeling to make my debut for the club I love."

Tottenham's clash with Orient has yet to be rearranged amid reports Jose Mourinho's men could be given a bye into the last 16, where they would face Chelsea or Barnsley.

Orient had revealed the positive cases on Monday after Tottenham paid for their opponents' testing, but the match was not called off until two hours before kick-off.

"If I was doing this again I would not do the testing - this is an incentive not to test and that is bad for football and bad for health and safety," Orient chairman Nigel Travis told the BBC.

West Bromwich Albion crashed out against second tier Brentford, losing 5-4 on penalties after a 1-1 draw at the Hawthorns.

Grady Diangana was the only Albion player to miss in the shoot-out and Christian Norgaard netted Brentford's winner to earn a tie against Fulham or Sheffield Wednesday.

Newport reached the competition's last 16 for the first time in their history as the fourth tier side beat Championship club Watford 3-1.

Manchester United moved into the League Cup fourth round with a 3-0 win at Luton, while West Ham boss David Moyes and two of his players contracted the coronavirus ahead of their 5-1 victory against Hull as the pandemic caused chaos on Tuesday.

West Ham's match went ahead as planned despite the virus tests, with assistant manager Alan Irvine taking charge of the Hammers. "At 20 past six we suddenly got some information from our doctor and head physio to say there were three positive tests, the manager and the two players," Irvine said. "We'd had contact insofar as we were in the same area of the stadium as David. "We were shocked by the news. We've had so many tests and not had any positive. But we've been very particular about protocol right from the start." Sebastien Haller and Andriy Yarmolenko both struck twice for West Ham after Robert Snodgrass opened the scoring. Man Utd reach League Cup last 16 as coronavirus causes chaos

Spanish striker Alvaro Morata on Tuesday returned to Juventus on loan from Atletico Madrid, the Turin club announced.

The much-travelled Morata, who is 27, played for Juventus from 2014-2016, scoring 27 goals in 93 appearances.&nbsp;

He graduated through the youth system at Real Madrid and had two stints at the club either side of his first spell at Juventus. He also had a spell at Chelsea before joining Atletico, initially on loan

He has joined Juventus on a season-long loan, which will cost 10 million euros (11.7 million dollars), the club said.

"He will be part of this year's team, with an option for a one-year extension to the loan, plus an option to buy," said Juventus on their web site, adding that the transfer fee would be 45 million euros, in three annual payments of 15 million euros, while a loan extension would cost 10 million euros at the end of which Juventus would have another option to buy, for 35 million euros.

"There's nothing more exciting than a homecoming and the return of Alvaro Morata to Turin is a beautiful one at that!" said Juventus.

After Gonzalo Higuain left for Miami last week, Juve's new coach, Andrea Pirlo, needed a solid centre-forward. The club was linked to Barcelona's Luis Suarez and Roma's Edin Dzeko but Morata, who played with Pirlo in his first spell at club, has arrived instead.

Spanish media immediately speculated that Morata's departure could clear the way for Atletico to recruit Suarez.

Morata scored in both legs in the 2015 Champions League semi-finals as Juventus beat one of his former clubs, Real Madrid, 3-2 on aggregate.

He then scored a second-half equaliser in the final before goals by Suarez and Neymar gave Barcelona a 3-1 victory.

His last goal for Juventus was the winner in the 2016 Copa Italia final against AC Milan, when he came off the bench 18 minutes into extra time and scored two minutes later.

"Even though Alvaro left the club four years ago, after having won five trophies in two years: two Scudetti, two Italian Cups, one Italian Super Cup, he has always remained Bianconero in his heart and his return will be as though he never even said goodbye.

"Because Alvaro is one of us," said Juventus.

"This is how we want to prevent there being a possible risk of infection," explained Soeder.

Only 500 Sevilla and 1300 Bayern fans are expected to watch the match at Budapest's Puskas Arena.

Fans warned as Bayern head to virus risk zone for Super Cup

Luis Suarez left his last Barcelona training session in tears on Wednesday as he prepares for a move to La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid.

Spanish television channel Gol showed the Uruguayan striker wiping away tears with his sleeve as he drove off after saying his last goodbyes.

Suarez had become close friends with above all Lionel Messi since his arrival at the Catalan club in 2014.

Catalan daily Sport confirmed: "Luis Suarez left the Sant Joan Despi training centre in tears. The Uruguayan player greeted his teammates for his last training before signing his exit papers."

"At the end of the session the Uruguayan said goodbye to those who were his teammates over the past six years," Spanish sports daily Marca reported.

At the start of the week Marca endorsed an earlier report on RAC1 radio announcing that the 33-year-old was "no longer a Barcelona player".

It said that he decided to forgo a percentage of this season's salary in return for being allowed to leave.

All the signs are that he is poised to join Diego Simeone's Atletico, who like Barca make their La Liga seasonal bow this weekend.

"It's done, Luis Suarez is going to Atletico," Marca announced on its front page on Wednesday.

Suarez's days at Barca were numbered ever since new coach Ronald Koeman included him in a list of players he said he wouldn't be counting on for the new season.

Others not in Koeman's plans were Arturo Vidal (since moved to Inter Milan), Ivan Rakitic (Sevilla) and Samuel Umtiti.

Since joining Barca from Liverpool in 2014 Suarez has won a host of trophies including the 2015 Champions League and four Liga titles.

He leaves as the club's third highest scorer with 198 goals behind Cesar Rodriguez (232) and Messi (634).

The Atletico move follows his failed attempt to join Juventus.

Juve coach Andrea Pirlo disclosed last week a deal was unlikely because of delays in the Uruguayan's bid to get an Italian passport.

On Tuesday prosecutors in Perugia said they suspected Suarez, with the help of teachers, of cheating to pass his Italian language test.

Atletico-bound Suarez leaves last Barca training in tears

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer blamed a lack of preparation time for Manchester United's dreadful start to the Premier League season as Wilfried Zaha scored twice against his former club to hand Crystal Palace a 3-1 win at Old Trafford on Saturday.

United ended the 2019/20 season little over a month ago due to their run to the Europa League semi-finals and had just two weeks pre-season training together.

"You can see we are short (of match fitness) and they deserved the points. They were sharper than us in the challenges," said Solskjaer.

"You can't be too surprised we are not at our best yet because this is the first game we've played since the middle of August. We have had a very short and strange pre-season. We need to improve and we need to improve quickly."

United finished last season on a 14-match unbeaten run in the Premier League to secure a third-place finish and raise hopes of mounting a title challenge to rivals Liverpool and Manchester City this season.

But on this evidence they need far more than the solitary signing of Donny Van de Beek, who scored on his debut, to compete at the top of the table.

Solskjaer, though, refused to use a lack of new signings as an excuse for such a slow start.

"If you look at the players we have on the pitch and on the bench today, we need to look within first and know we have to perform better," he added.&nbsp;

"We are always looking to improve if there is something out there available at the right price. But we can all look ourselves in the mirror today instead."

Palace have now won their first two games of a Premier League season for the first time and on their last two visits to United.

"When we had the ball I thought we looked very dangerous and threatening so I don't think it was a big surprise that we scored three," said Palace boss Roy Hodgson.

Solskjaer kept faith with David De Gea in goal ahead of Dean Henderson, who has returned to Old Trafford from an impressive loan spell at Sheffield United.

But the Spanish international was beaten after just seven minutes as the United defence was carved open by Jeffrey Schlupp's run and cross from the left and Andros Townsend ghosted in ahead of Luke Shaw to convert at the far post.

Zaha failed to make the grade in two seasons at United, but with Alex Ferguson, the man who signed him in 2013, in attendance, he showed why remains in such high demand.

The Ivorian's first goal of the afternoon was ruled out by the offside flag early in the second-half from another promising Palace counter-attack.

But from Palace's next break they got their reward as Ayew's shot struck Victor Lindelof on the arm and, after reviewing the pitchside monitor, referee Martin Atkinson pointed to the penalty spot.

De Gea saved Ayew's first penalty, but after another interruption from VAR, the spot-kick was retaken for De Gea being millimetres off his line when the ball was struck.

Zaha took over the responsibility and this time crashed the ball home for his second goal of the season.

Van de Beek came off the bench to replace the ineffective Paul Pogba and showed his goalscoring instinct from midfield by latching onto a loose ball inside the area to halve United's arrears 10 minutes from time.

But just five minutes later the game was killed as a contest when Zaha shrugged off Lindelof with ease before blasting low and hard past De Gea.

"When you come here you need to show you are going to play on the front foot and not just defend and let them do what they want on the ball," added Hodgson. "We started in the right way and finished in the right way."

Zaha double hands Man Utd dreadful Premier League start

Mikel Arteta praised Arsenal's mental strength to strike late through Eddie Nketiah and beat West Ham 2-1 despite an underwhelming performance at the Emirates.

The Gunners move level with Everton and Crystal Palace on maximum points at the top of the table after two games, but were far from the standards they have set under Arteta.

After Michail Antonio cancelled out Alexandre Lacazette's opener for the hosts, West Ham enjoyed the majority of the chances.

Antonio saw a second-half header come back off the bar, but Arsenal were ruthless with their chance to win the game as Dani Ceballos timed his run perfectly in behind the West Ham defence to square for Nketiah, who had the simple task of rolling into an empty net.

"I am really happy with the three points and it's a time to analyse properly because we have a lot of issues," said Arteta.

"What I like is the approach the boys had in the last 25 minutes where I could see they were a bit down and then they lift it and probably a few months ago we would have drawn or lost that game and today we win it.

"In the end you have to find a way because there will be games like this through the season."

After winning the FA Cup and Community Shield and starting their season with a flourish by winning 3-0 at Fulham on the opening weekend, Arsenal were expected to swot aside a West Ham team that were easily beaten by Newcastle a week ago.

But David Moyes's men deserved something to show for their performance and felt hard done by with some decisions that went against them.

After a relatively trouble free first weekend of the season for VAR reviews, the inconsistent application of what constitutes handball reared its head on Saturday.

Manchester United's Victor Lindelof was penalised for handling inside the box during his side's 3-1 home defeat to Crystal Palace, but West Ham were not awarded a penalty for what seemed a much more obvious handball from Gabriel Magalhaes early on.

"I definitely think we should have had a penalty," said Moyes. "But we don't know the rules, really, do we?"

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang committed his future to Arsenal earlier this week by signing a new three-year contract and the Gunners' prolific goalscorer was the creator for the opening goal as he just managed to stay onside from Bukayo Saka's pass before crossing for Lacazette to power a header home.

That was the only clear opening the hosts created before half-time and West Ham levelled just before the break when Antonio outmuscled Rob Holding to turn home Ryan Fredericks's inviting cross.

Antonio was a constant menace to the Arsenal defence and came close twice more in the second period.

Gabriel just did enough to take the sting out of his first effort for Bernd Leno to save on the line before Antonio powered a header back off the crossbar.

And West Ham were made to rue those missed chances as Arsenal were clinical with their only clear sight of goal in the second-half.

"Not to be rewarded with some points tonight is really hard on us," added Moyes. "For us just to turn off in the last five minutes, it's criminal."

Ceballos and Nketiah were involved in a spat during the warm-up at Craven Cottage last weekend, but showed they were back on the same wavelength as the Spanish midfielder unselfishly squared for the England under-21 international.

"We made up pretty quickly," said Nketiah. "That's what happens in life and it was nice for him to make the assist for me today, so it's all love.

"In the end you have to find a way because there will be games like this through the season." After winning the FA Cup and Community Shield and starting their season with a flourish by winning 3-0 at Fulham on the opening weekend, Arsenal were expected to swot aside a West Ham team that were easily beaten by Newcastle a week ago. "But we don't know the rules, really, do we?" Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang committed his future to Arsenal earlier this week by signing a new three-year contract and the Gunners' prolific goalscorer was the creator for the opening goal as he just managed to stay onside from Bukayo Saka's pass before crossing for Lacazette to power a header home. "For us just to turn off in the last five minutes, it's criminal." Ceballos and Nketiah were involved in a spat during the warm-up at Craven Cottage last weekend, but showed they were back on the same wavelength as the Spanish midfielder unselfishly squared for the England under-21 international. "We made up pretty quickly," said Nketiah. "That's what happens in life and it was nice for him to make the assist for me today, so it's all love.

Arsenal strike late to beat wasteful West Ham

Pep Guardiola faces a stern test of his managerial philosophy as the Manchester City boss aims to overhaul Premier League champions Liverpool this season.

After an extra week of rest due to their involvement in the latter stages of last season's Champions League, Guardiola's side start their Premier League campaign with a tricky trip to Wolves on Monday.

It is exactly the kind of fixture that proved fatal to City's hopes of retaining the title last season.

They were beaten twice by Wolves, eventually losing nine league games and finishing a massive 18 points behind Liverpool.

Guardiola knows City cannot afford so many unexpected stumbles this season if they are to end Liverpool's reign.

But the Spaniard himself might need to look in the mirror as he contemplates the reasons for City's steep decline.

His inability to fix City's defensive problems and constant tinkering with his midfield and attack seemed to spread confusion and frustration among his squad.

Only Kevin De Bruyne enjoyed a transcendent season for City and the Belgian midfield maestro could not carry his team all alone.

Guardiola's positional switches destabilised City again in their shock Champions League quarter-final loss to Lyon in August.

Throw in Arsenal's FA Cup semi-final win over City, in which Gunners boss Mikel Arteta out-witted his former mentor, and it is easy to see why some are questioning Guardiola's ability to take his team back to the top.

City have the quality in their squad to beat anyone -- as they showed in a 4-0 rout of Liverpool last season -- but does Guardiola have the hunger and ability to make it happen on a consistent basis?

&nbsp;

<h2>- 'No complaints' -</h2>

&nbsp;

Luring Lionel Messi from Barcelona would have boosted to City's title prospects, but the Argentine superstar was eventually forced to end his attempt to reunite with former boss Guardiola.

Instead, City have brought in Dutch defender Nathan Ake and Spanish winger Ferran Torres, while Napoli centre-back Kalidou Koulibaly reportedly remains a target.

Guardiola insists he will not complain if those are his only new signings, despite the heavy spending of title rivals Chelsea and Liverpool's swoop for Bayern Munich star Thiago Alcantara.

"Since day one, since I arrived here, I've been more than satisfied with the team and the club does everything to do their best, not just for me, but for the team," Guardiola said.

"What is going to happen is going to happen. If we have to stay with the players (we have) I'll be happy, or if we have to move someone (on) - because sometimes it is the player that decides to leave.

"I've never before, or in the future will I complain. I'm lucky to have these players and be in this club."

City's failure to replace Vincent Kompany last year proved hugely detrimental and his absence was compounded by a long-term injury to Aymeric Laporte.&nbsp;

City's title defence faltered early on and they were never able to produce a strong challenge to Liverpool.

With Laporte an unlikely starter at Molineux, having only returned to training on Friday following a positive Covid-19 test earlier this month, former Bournemouth defender Ake seems certain to make his debut, while Torres is also in contention.

"So far really, it is really good. What we have to do, all the players and staff, and all the people close, is to help them to settle as quickly as possible," Guardiola said.

"And the most important thing is they are two nice people and it's good to have them with us."

City's record goalscorer Sergio Aguero is still recovering from the knee surgery that has sidelined him since June and could be two months away from a return.

Guardiola must rise to challenge as Man City chase Liverpool

Leroy Sane said all-conquering Bayern Munich crave even more silverware after the Germany winger scored on his debut in Friday's historic 8-0 thrashing of Schalke in the opening game of the new Bundesliga season.

"We're still hungry, even though we won the treble last season," said Sane after creating two goals for Serge Gnabry, who claimed a hat-trick in the goalfest at the Allianz Arena.

"Winning our first game at home 8-0 is obviously super.

"It felt really, really good finally to be able to play with the lads," said Sane, who spent most of last season sidelined at former club Manchester City after tearing knee ligaments at the very start of last season.

"It's been a very good day with lots of goals."

Just 26 days after winning the Champions League final, Bayern picked up where they left off last season with their 22nd-straight win.

"It is amazing how the team has built on the performance of the past season," said Bayern board member and former club captain Oliver Kahn.

The jaw-dropping result is the highest win in an opening game of a new Bundesliga season - five weeks to the day after Bayern's 8-2 thrashing of Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Leon Goretzka, Thomas Mueller and Robert Lewandowksi also netted, while England junior international Jamal Musiala, 17, became the youngest Bayern goal-scorer in the Bundesliga when he came on late.&nbsp;

Bayern had to brush off setbacks in the days leading up to kick-off.

On Thursday, the Mayor of Munich scuppered plans to allow 7,500 fans into the Allianz Arena, due to rising new cases of the coronavirus in the Bavarian capital, hours after Bayern confirmed the sale of Thiago Alcantara to Liverpool.

Before kick-off, David Alaba, who is stalling over signing a contract extension with a year left to go, dropped out with a leg injury.

<h2>- Normal service resumed -</h2>

However, Bayern picked up where they left off 26 days after winning the Champions League final in Lisbon.&nbsp;

Cash-strapped Schalke continued their miserable finish to last season as David Wagner's side have now gone 17 games without a win.

Gnabry opened the scoring with just four minutes gone with a great piece of finishing which gave Schalke goalkeeper Ralf Faehrmann no chance.

Burly central midfielder Goretzka grabbed the second against his former club when he hit the bottom corner from the edge of the box on 19 minutes.

Lewandowski, the Bundesliga's top scorer last season with 34 goals, opened his account for 2020/21 with half an hour gone.

He netted a penalty after being brought down in the area by Schalke defender Ozan Kabak, who has been linked to a move to Liverpool.

Incredibly, Lewandowski has now scored in each of his last 10 games against Schalke, dating back to April 2016, including a hat-trick in last August's 3-0 win over the Royal Blues in Gelsenkirchen.&nbsp;

It was 3-0 at half-time, but Gnabry grabbed his second two minutes after the break when he fired into an empty net after a sprint by Sane pulled Faehrmann out of position.

The pair combined again when Sane chested the ball down after getting in behind the defence and rolled the ball off to the waiting Gnabry to claim his hat-trick just before the hour mark.

Mueller added the sixth on 69 minutes after Lewandowski had again cut Schalke's defence to shreds.

The records were sent tumbling as Sane marked his debut with the seventh on 71 minutes when he sprinted onto Joshua Kimmich's superb pass and fired home with Lewandowski unmarked outside him.

Musiala, who only turned 17 in February, became the club's youngest scorer in the Bundesliga when he darted in from the left wing to add the eighth on 81 minutes.&nbsp;

Gnabry hits hat-trick as 'hungry' Bayern run riot in historic Bundesliga opener

Liverpool face an early test of their Premier League title defence against Chelsea this weekend as Manchester City and Manchester United launch their quest to be champions.

Arsenal, Everton and Leicester hope to build on encouraging opening wins while Jose Mourinho needs a morale-boosting victory for Tottenham.

AFP Sport looks at some of the main talking points ahead of the action.

<h2>Will big-spending Chelsea make Liverpool pay?</h2>

Chelsea's meeting with Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday has added edge after a feisty exchange between the managers over transfer spending.&nbsp;

The London club finished 33 points behind the champions last season but have splashed out around £200 million ($259 million) on new players.

By contrast, Liverpool have been relatively quiet, adding just Greece left-back Kostas Tsimikas so far, with Spain midfielder Thiago Alcantara likely to follow.

Jurgen Klopp pointedly said Liverpool could not spend in the same way as clubs owned by "countries" and "oligarchs" such as City and Chelsea during the coronavirus pandemic.

But Frank Lampard, who also became embroiled in a spat with Liverpool's bench in July, pointed out the Anfield side had spent big in previous seasons as they built their title-winning side.

Liverpool will be keen to cut out the defensive errors they committed in a 4-3 win against newly-promoted Leeds, but Mohamed Salah looked in fine early season form as he scored a hat-trick on the opening weekend.

Chelsea were also unconvincing winners against Brighton in their opening match, but Timo Werner, who chose to join the Blues despite interest from Liverpool, did impress in winning a penalty against the Seagulls.

<h2>Manchester City's tough task</h2>

Manchester City are the bookmakers' favourites to land a third Premier League trophy in four seasons but face a tough opener against Wolves.

City boss Pep Guardiola has shored up his defence by signing Netherlands international Nathan Ake and has added to his rich attacking options, landing Ferran Torres from Valencia.

City scored 102 goals last season as they finished second, but lost nine matches as they surrendered their crown to Liverpool.

Both Manchester clubs are starting a week later than other sides due to their European commitments last season.

Guardiola will be painfully aware that his team must be more consistent this campaign and he cannot afford to let Klopp's men open up an early lead.

But he will feel nervous as he travels to face Wolves, who beat City twice last season, after a disrupted pre-season.

City duo Aymeric Laporte and Riyad Mahrez tested positive for coronavirus earlier this month, while Phil Foden was sent home by England after breaking coronavirus protocols while on international duty.

<h2>Can Man Utd progress?</h2>

The challenge facing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ahead of a match against Crystal Palace is how to improve on last season's third-place finish.

Midfielder Bruno Fernandes was the catalyst as United put together a long unbeaten run, with a front three of Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood providing the firepower.

But United have been relatively quiet in the transfer window, so far adding just midfielder Donny van de Beek from Ajax, despite persistent speculation linking them with Borussia Dortmund's Jadon Sancho.

"When we signed Bruno Fernandes, we knew we needed that kind of player -- now we've signed Donny and he's a type of player I felt we needed in the squad," said Solskjaer.

<h2>Arsenal's feel-good factor</h2>

Arsenal are buoyant after launching their season with a 3-0 win at newly promoted Fulham and tying down captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang for three more years.

Mikel Arteta's men, who host West Ham on Saturday, finished down in eighth place last season but ended their campaign on a high, winning the FA Cup for a record 14th time.

They followed that up by beating Liverpool on penalties in the season-opening Community Shield before the announcement on Aubameyang this week that fans had craved.

"I want to become an Arsenal legend just like Thierry (Henry), Wrighty (Ian Wright), (Tony) Adams and (Dennis) Bergkamp," he said.

Liverpool face Chelsea test as Manchester clubs enter fray

Premier League clubs on Thursday urged the government to stick to its proposal to allow a partial return of fans to stadiums from October 1.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said last week ministers would review the target date for a return of crowds following a spike in coronavirus cases.

Pilot events are currently restricted to 1,000 spectators.

The English top-flight was forced to finish last season behind closed doors and the new campaign has also started in empty stadiums.

The Premier League and its clubs emphasised their commitment to safety after meeting on Thursday.

"Safety remains the number-one priority and clubs reiterated their commitment to ensuring Premier League stadiums will be among the safest public places,&nbsp;through the effective use of a wide range of mitigation measures," the Premier League said in a statement.

"Clubs will adopt a range of common standards, which will help deliver bio-secure, safe environments for fans across the league."

Top-flight clubs stated the loss of matchday revenues was having a "significant impact" across the league and throughout the football pyramid.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

"Taking into account the high safety standards which will be set by the Premier League in conjunction with the relevant public authorities, the league and clubs urge government to remain committed to&nbsp;the 1 October&nbsp;date for the controlled return of fans to sporting venues," the statement said.

Seven English Football League matches are set to be played in front of crowds of up to 1,000 this weekend, in the second, third and fourth tiers.

The government granted the EFL permission to use selected fixtures as pilot events to reintroduce spectators to venues on a socially distanced basis.

Thiago agreed upon a “long-term contract” with the Premier League champions after ending his seven-year stay with German giants Bayern Munich. Thiago comes with a massive reputation of being one of the top midfielders and was in excellent form in the 2019-20 season where he helped Bayern Munich lift the treble of UEFA Champions League, Bundesliga trophy and German Cup.

However, the Spaniard said that Riyad Mahrez, who had tested positive for the coronavirus, will be available for the season opener after testing negative.&nbsp;

Talking about Wolves, Pep said that they are always a strong side and it will be a difficult game for the Blues.&nbsp;

"Wolves were always strong, even when they were in the Championship. It was always a difficult game but it will not be any more difficult as against Leicester or Leeds away. We know exactly how tough the Premier League is,” Pep said in pre-match press conference.

As Aymeric Laporte won’t be available for Man City on Monday, chances are high that new signing Nathan Ake might be handed his club debut.

"We bought Nathan Ake as a centre-back, but sometimes he can help us as a full-back. Maybe if we get injuries, he can play there."
When asked about the transfer of highly-linked player Kalidou Kouilbaly or any other incoming transfers, Pep said he never speaks about other players in front of the media. "No. I don’t talk in the media about the transfer window,” Pep replied to WION’s query during the press conference.&nbsp;

"What’s going to happen is going to happen. If we stay with the players we have we'll be happy. Never before and never in the future am I going to complain. I'm lucky to have these players and to be at this club,” he added.&nbsp;

In his last year of the current contract, Pep said he is content with the club from the day he arrived in Manchester while adding he knows the club will do the best for everyone including the player and manager.&nbsp;

"Since day one, when I arrived here I’m more than satisfied with what I had in the team. I know the club do absolutely everything to do their best, not just for me, but for all of us…” Pep concluded.

Premier League: Sergio Aguero and Aymeric Laporte unavailable against Wolves, confirms Pep Guardiola

Olli Rehn, who heads the FIFA committee set up to tackle the effects of the pandemic, said that FIFA, along with financial consultants, had estimated the club game to be worth between $40 billion and $45 billion worldwide.

He said the figure of $14 billion was based on the current scenario, where football is slowly restarting after a three-month hiatus earlier this year, but it would be a “different ball game” if the pandemic did not let up.

“Football has been hit very hard by the coronavirus pandemic,” Rehn, a former EU commissioner and now governor of the Bank of Finland, told Reuters television.

“It has created plenty of turmoil at different levels with some professional clubs facing very serious difficulties. I’m also very concerned about youth academies and lower division clubs.”

Rehn said that football in South America had been especially hard hit, while Africa and Asia were also a concern.

“It is a real danger that the good work that has been done developing football in Asia and Africa could be ruined, so we want to soften the blow and maintain the development that has been done,” he said.

FIFA has allocated $1.5 billion to help tackle the effects of the pandemic and Rehn said 150 of the 211 member associations had so far applied for funds.

He said that, while football was slowly re-awakening, another downturn could not be ruled out.

“The critical thing will be whether a vaccine will be developed and can be used, and that we have medical and other means to fully contain and tame the pandemic, and that is uncertain,” he said.

“We cannot rule out worse developments and that would be another ball game if the pandemic were to continue in a severe form next year. Now we are working on the basis of the current scenario.”

Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur are set for a sensational scoop as the London outfit are in talks to sign Real Madrid forward Gareth Bale and left-back Sergio Reguilon. Spurs lost their first match in the 2020-21 <a href="https://www.wionews.com/topics/premier-league">Premier League</a> season and that might have triggered the transfer of Bale and Reguilon.&nbsp;

According to reports, talks with Bale are continuing while there is an agreement with Real Madrid over the signing of Reguilon. The sensational transfer of Bale, who has fallen out with Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane in the last couple of seasons, will bring the Welshman back to Spurs but it is the signing of highly-rated Reguilon which will boost the shaky defense of Mourinho’s side.

Bale, 31, signed for Real Madrid from Spurs for a then world record fee of 85 million pounds in 2013 and went on to score over 100 goals while lifting four UEFA Champions League titles. But Bale’s signing is likely to be a loan deal given the enormous wages he earns at the Spanish club.

"Gareth still loves Spurs," his agent Jonathan Barnett told BBC Sport Wales. "It's where he wants to be."

Whereas Reguilon was previously linked with Manchester United. However, the Red Devils were reluctant to add the ‘Buy Back Clause’ to the deal which Spurs have reportedly agreed upon.

Bale was massively successful during his stay at Spurs and went onto win the PFA Player of the Year award. He then scored in the 2014 and 2018 Champions League final for Real Madrid as well as in the 2014 Copa del Rey final.

Bale started just one match after 2019-20 La Liga restart and played just 100 minutes as Real Madrid won their first title since 2017. He didn’t even celebrate well with his Real teammates.&nbsp;

If Spurs sign both Reguilon and Bale, then pressure will be back on Mourinho to deliver the result as the London club look to fight for Champions League spot.
