Italy snatched a dramatic and deserved 1-0 win away to Poland in their Nations League match on Sunday thanks to a stoppage-time header from Cristiano Biraghi, his first international goal.

Biraghi gave Italy their first win in the competition and also their first in a competitive match since Roberto Mancini took over as coach in May.

It also meant that Poland, who have one point from three games after also losing at home to Portugal on Thursday, will finish bottom of Group Three in League A and will be relegated to the second-tier League B.

It was a richly-deserved win for Italy who produced one of their best performances in the last few years and twice hit the crossbar in the first half.

Italy have four points from three games while leaders Portugal, who remain firm favourites to win the group and qualify for the semi-finals at the end of the season, have six from two.

"We dominated the match, we should have scored earlier and it would have been very unfair if the game had finished 0-0," said Mancini who is rebuilding the side after their failure to qualify for this year's World Cup.

"It's a great win, we can still improve a lot but it needs patience -- these lads need time."

Poland made six changes to the team which lost to Portugal while Italy's line-up was unchanged from Wednesday's 1-1 draw at home to Ukraine.

Italy immediately took the initiative and midfielder Jorginho curled a shot against the bar in the first minute.

Lorenzo Insigne dinked the ball on to the roof of the net from Alessandro Florenzi's pass and the Napoli forward also struck the woodwork on the half-hour after Federico Chiesa sent him clear.

Jorginho then forced Wojciech Szczesny to make a difficult save as Italy continued to dominate the game and create chances.

Italy continued to push forward after halftime, playing some flowing football in the process, and should have gone ahead when Federico Bernardeschi found himself with a free header from Chiesa's cross but sent his shot wide of the target.

Then it was Poland's turn as Kamil Grosicki was sent clear by Roberto Lewandowski. His shot was parried by Gianluigi Donnarumma and the rebound fell to Arkadiusz Milik who fired wide.

A draw would have guaranteed Portugal top spot with two games to spare but Italy finally got their reward in the 92nd minute.

A corner was touched on by substitute Kevin Lasagne at the near post and Biraghi, winning his third cap, headed in to spark delirious celebrations on the Italy bench.

Thierry Henry has "everything" needed to become a good manager, France coach and former international teammate Didier Deschamps said of the newly-named Monaco coach.

"Thierry's ready," Deschamps told TF1. "He has everything" to be a good coach.

"He's throwing himself into an exciting, exhilarating project where he'll have to take responsibility. It'll be up to him to take the reins."

Former Arsenal star Henry was named Monaco coach on Saturday, his first job in club management after leaving his position with the Belgian national team.

The 41-year-old French World Cup winner, who had been working as an assistant to Belgium coach Roberto Martinez since 2016, returns to the club where he began his professional career.

Henry replaces Leonardo Jardim, who in 2017 guided Monaco to their first Ligue 1 title since 2000. He was sacked on Thursday after a string of poor results left Monaco in the relegation places.

Deschamps, who captained the France team featuring Henry that won the 1998 World Cup and Euro 2000, also started his coaching career at Monaco, back in 2001.

"The first season was very complicated," he said, wishing Henry "lots of courage and big success".

Germany defender Jerome Boateng has been ruled out of Tuesday's away Nations League match against France in Paris with the under-fire Germans eager to avoid a record sixth defeat in a calendar year.

Boateng picked up a calf injury in Amsterdam as the Germans were hammered 3-0 by the Netherlands on Saturday to leave them bottom of their Nations League group.

The 30-year-old centre-back was injured with 20 minutes left, but finished the match as Germany coach Joachim Loew had already used his three substitutions with the Germans chasing the game at 1-0 down before the Dutch scored two late goals.

Boateng, a 2014 World Cup winner, will be replaced against the French by either his Bayern Munich team-mate Niklas Suele or Bayer Leverkusen's Jonathan Tah, who was drafted into the senior squad on Saturday after captaining the Under-21 team on Friday.

After the debacle in Amsterdam, Germany are eager for a victory at the Stade de France in Paris to avoid becoming the first senior German national side to lose six times in a single year and ease the mounting pressure on Loew.

France substitute Kylian Mbappe engineered two late goals to rescue a 2-2 draw against Iceland and spare the blushes of the world champions in their friendly in Guingamp on Thursday.

The home side enjoyed the lion's share of possession and created plenty of good scoring opportunities, but Iceland, hammered 6-0 and 3-0 in their last two games by Switzerland and Belgium, still managed to take the lead on the half-hour mark.

Alfred Finnbogason dispossessed defender Presnel Kimpembe near the corner flag before jinking inside Lucas Digne and squaring the ball to the onrushing Birkir Bjarnason, who side-footed it home from the edge of the area.

It was Iceland's first goal under new coach Erik Hamren and Kari Arnason added their second 13 minutes into the second half, flicking a near-post corner past France keeper Hugo Lloris and into the net.

That prompted the introduction of Mbappe, who scored France's fourth goal in their 4-2 World Cup final win over Croatia.

The Iceland players threw themselves frantically at every ball in a concerted effort to keep their clean sheet, but they were undone in the 86th minute.

After having a goal ruled out for offside, the 19-year-old Mbappe hammered a shot that goalkeeper Hannes Halldorsson deflected into Holmar Orn Eyjolfsson, who sent it bouncing across the line for an own goal.

Mbappe levelled the scores four minutes later, stepping up to rifle the ball home from the penalty spot after a handball by Kolbeinn Sigthorsson.

Portugal's Bernardo Silva scored a typical individual goal as their new-look side recovered to win 3-2 away to Poland in the Nations League with an impressive performance on Thursday.

Andre Silva's strike and a Kamil Glik own goal put the European champions ahead by halftime, after Krzysztof Piatek had given Poland an early lead, and Bernardo Silva then got in the act early in the second half of the League A Group 3 game.

Poland substitute Jakub Blaszczykowski, making his 103rd appearance as he became his country's most capped player, pulled a goal back but it was not enough for the hosts.

It was also an unhappy 100th Poland appearance for Robert Lewandowski, who barely had a touch of the ball.

After two games Portugal top the group with six points, while Poland and Italy have one apiece.

Portugal, who are rebuilding their team after a second-round exit at the World Cup, left out a number of old favourites including Joao Moutinho, Jose Fonte and Ricardo Quaresma.

Captain and all-time leading scorer Cristiano Ronaldo was also absent by what coach Fernando Santos said was mutual consent, although he is expected to be recalled next year.

Piatek, scorer of nine goals in seven Serie A matches for Genoa this season, struck an early blow when he outjumped Joao Cancelo at the far post to head Poland in front from a corner in the 18th minute.

But after that, it was mainly one-way traffic as Portugal took control.

Andre Silva levelled in the 31st minute, turning in Pizzi's low cross following a well-worked move down the right for his 14th goal in 29 appearances.

Ruben Neves set up the second with a majestic long ball from inside his own half which caught out the Polish defence.

Rafa Silva got on the end of it and his first touch took him past goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski before Glik put the ball into his own net.

Seven minutes after halftime, Bernardo Silva collected the ball near the touchline, jinked inside one marker, ran across the edge of the penalty area and scored with a low shot past Fabianski.

Portugal continued to dominate even after Blaszczykowski's goal and Renato Sanches was twice close to a fourth for the visitors.

New-look Portugal hit back to win 3-2 in Poland

An Aleksandar Mitrovic brace gave Serbia a 2-0 away win over neighbours Montenegro on Thursday that put them top of their UEFA Nations League group after a scrappy clash between two former Yugoslav republics.

The result left Serbia on seven points from three games in the third-tier Group 4, two ahead of Romania, who won 2-1 at Lithuania. Montenegro have four points and Lithuania none.

The first meeting between Montenegro and Serbia as independent nations since they separated in 2006 was played amid tight security but in a friendly atmosphere with both sets of fans applauding each other's national anthems.

It was also watched from the VIP box by Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho, reportedly screening Serbia's 20-year-old centre back Nikola Milenkovic, who is in excellent form for his Serie A club Fiorentina after enjoying a good World Cup.

Serbia dominated the game and should have won by a bigger margin but for some poor finishing by playmaker Dusan Tadic, who squandered two sitters after good work by winger Andrija Zivkovic and the tireless Mitrovic.

Those misses came after in-form Fulham striker Mitrovic sent goalkeeper Danijel Petkovic the wrong way with an 18th-minute spot-kick, after Montenegro right back Filip Stojkovic fouled his Red Star Belgrade team mate Milan Rodic.

The Montenegrins upped the pace in the closing stages and their striker Fatos Beciraj forced a good save from Serbia keeper Marko Dmitrovic in the 72nd minute with a rasping low shot from 20 metres.

Montenegro's Serbian coach Ljubisa Tumbakovic was sent off by Italian referee Gianluca Rocchi for dissent before Mitrovic sealed the contest with a close-range finish in the 81st minute.

Substitute Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who had also been linked with a possible future move to United from Lazio, allowed Zivkovic's pass to run with a clever dummy, leaving Mitrovic with the simple task of beating Petkovic from three metres.

Serbia next visit Romania while Montenegro are at home to Lithuania on Sunday.

Argentina easily overcame Iraq 4-0 in a friendly in Saudi Arabia on Thursday with three players scoring their first international goals for the twice world champions while German Pezzella also found the net.

Argentina were without Lionel Messi, who is taking a sabbatical from international football, and fielded a new-look side that included one player making his debut and two others their first-ever starts.

The new boys were rarely troubled by an Iraq side that defended in numbers, but showed little threat in their opponent's half.

Inter Milan striker Lautaro Martinez, playing only his second game for the national side, put Argentina ahead after 15 minutes with a superb header from a Marcos Acuna cross.

Roberto Pereyra doubled their lead eight minutes into the second half when he took a pass on the edge of the box and swept a right-foot shot home after the Iraq defence opened up in front of him.

Defender Pezzella grabbed a third eight minutes from fulltime when he headed home after a flick-on at a corner and Franco Cervi added a fourth in injury time after a surging run from midfield.

"It wasn't easy opening them up but we managed it and we were patient and managed to score more goals," Pezzella said.

The win took Argentina's unbeaten run under interim coach Lionel Scaloni to three games.

Since taking over from Jorge Sampaoli after Argentina's poor performance at the World Cup in Russia, the South Americans have beaten Guatemala and Iraq and drawn with Colombia, without conceding a goal.

Argentina's next game is on Tuesday against arch-rivals Brazil in Jeddah.

The team did not tell Rasan about his mother's demise to keep him focused, but he got the information when he was substituted out of the game in 70th minute.

As per reports, the Iraqi national team took away every player's phone so that Bashar won't know about the news until the end of the game.

However, after knowing about the sad news, he left the camp in Riyadh and it is expected that he will not feature for the game against Saudi Arabia, which is scheduled on October 15.

The 21-year-old stunned Argentine players with his moves in the first half of the game.

Argentina easily overcame Iraq with three players scoring their first international goals for the twice world champions while German Pezzella also found the net.

Iraq's star footballer Bashar Rasan was unaware of his mother's death when he was playing during Iraq's 0-4 defeat to Argentina in a friendly clash in Saudi Arabia on Thursday.

Iraq's star footballer Bashar Rasan was unaware of his mother's death when he was playing during Iraq's 0-4 defeat to Argentina in a friendly clash in Saudi Arabia on Thursday. Iraq vs Argentina: Bashar Rasan leaves pitch after finding out about mother's death

The 55 national teams currently participating in the inaugural UEFA Nations League will see a 50 per cent increase in solidarity fees paid to them, European football's governing body UEFA has said.

The 12 strongest teams based on UEFA rankings - divided into four groups of three in League A - will each receive 2.25 million euros ($2.6 million) in solidarity fees, an increase of 750,000 euros from the amount announced in March.

Each group winner in League A will be given an additional 2.25 million euros as a bonus, up from 1.5 million euros.

"The decision to increase the solidarity and bonus payments was taken by the UEFA executive committee and was made possible by UEFA's solid financial situation," UEFA said in a statement.

UEFA added the financial boost was also due to their earnings from Euro 2016 that were set aside for future investment.

League A group winners will compete for the UEFA Nations League trophy in June 2019 and the champions stand to gain 6 million euros in solidarity fees - taking the maximum they could earn from the tournament to 10.5 million euros.

The event, created to replace friendly internationals that were unpopular with clubs, players and fans as they interrupted league action, largely got the thumbs up after the first batch of matches in September.

Football: UEFA to pay countries more for Nations League participation

Belgian police carried out a series of raids at football clubs and homes across the country on Wednesday and detained many people for questioning about financial fraud and possible match-fixing, Belgian prosecutors said.

A total of 44 searches were carried out at top Belgian clubs and residences, federal prosecutors said in a statement. At the same time, searches of 13 houses also took place in France, Luxembourg, Cyprus, Montenegro, Serbia and Macedonia.

Prosecutors did not name any clubs or people. Belgian broadcasters VRT and RTBF said searches had taken place at leading teams including Anderlecht, Club Bruges and Standard Liege.

Prosecutors said the searches were related to an investigation launched at the end of 2017 into suspect financial transactions in the top Belgian league, with possible charges of criminal organisation, money laundering and corruption.

Some agents were suspected of hiding commissions on transfers, players' pay and other payments from the Belgian authorities, the prosecutors said.

"During the investigation, there were indications of possible influencing of matches in the 2017-2018 season," the prosecutors said.

The searches come after Belgium reached the World Cup semi-finals. Most of the national team squad now play abroad but previously played in the Belgian premier league, which is a major feeder of players for top European club sides.

Some of the house searches were carried out at the homes of club directors, football agents, referees, a former lawyer, a trainer, journalists and at an accountancy office.

"A large number of people have been deprived of their liberty and taken in for a thorough interrogation," the prosecutors said, adding that a judge would later decide who should be held in custody or formally arrested.

The searches abroad were chiefly at offices and residences of people used to set up the suspect transactions, the prosecutors said.

Belgian police raid top football clubs over fraud, match-fixing

Former Chelsea and England captain John Terry has decided to call time on his playing career after 23 years in the game.

The central defender has been without a club since leaving Championship (second-tier) side Aston Villa following their playoff defeat by Fulham at Wembley Stadium last season.

"After 23 incredible years as a footballer, I have decided now is the right time for me to retire from playing," Terry, 37, wrote on his Instagram account on Sunday.

He has been linked by British media with a managerial role at Villa Park as the number two to former Arsenal and France forward Thierry Henry following the sacking of Steve Bruce on Wednesday, with Villa now struggling in 15th place.

Terry, a no-nonsense defender who won 78 England caps, left Chelsea in 2017 after 19 seasons at the west London club where he won 17 trophies, including five Premier League titles, five FA Cup triumphs and three League Cup trophies.

Terry also won both a Champions League and Europa League winners' medal although he did not appear in either final, having been suspended for the 2012 European Cup triumph and injured for the Europa League success the following year.

After he announced his retirement, Chelsea wrote on Twitter: "Twenty-two years as a Blue. Fifteen major trophies. One of the finest careers of any Englishman in the history of the game. Enjoy your retirement, JT."

"As a 14-year-old, I made my best and biggest decision: to sign for Chelsea Football Club," he added in his Instagram post. "Words will never be enough to show how much everyone at the club means to me, in particular, the fans."

Terry was reluctant to leave Chelsea but took up the challenge of trying to lead former European champions Villa back to the top flight, just missing out in the Wembley playoff.

"I also want to say a huge thank you to Aston Villa for giving me the opportunity to play at such a big club and captain it throughout the 2017/18 season," he added on Sunday.

"It was a privilege to represent such a renowned football club with great fans.

"I look forward to the next chapter in my life and the challenges ahead."

Terry captained his country 34 times after first taking the armband in 2005. "As a 14-year-old, I made my best and biggest decision: to sign for Chelsea Football Club," he added in his Instagram post. "Words will never be enough to show how much everyone at the club means to me, in particular, the fans." Terry was reluctant to leave Chelsea but took up the challenge of trying to lead former European champions Villa back to the top flight, just missing out in the Wembley playoff.

Twelve Thai boys and their football coach, who were dramatically rescued from a flooded cave in July, enjoyed a high-profile kickabout on Sunday (October 07), playing a game at River Plate's iconic Monumental stadium.

The team, known as the 'Wild Boars', are honoured guests at the Youth Olympics in the Argentine capital after their rescue gripped the world.

Dressed in violet jerseys with the team logo of the record Argentine champions, they faced River's under-13 team, entering the pitch to loud applause from their opponents.

For the record the final score was 3-3.

They survived nine days on water dripping from rocks before they were discovered on a muddy mound by divers.

A dramatic, international rescue effort ended on July 10 when they were all brought out safely after an ordeal that made headlines around the world.

They have since been showered with invitations, among them to fly to the Argentine capital and attend the Youth Olympic Games.

The boys, who were also guests of honour at the Games opening ceremony in Buenos Aires on Saturday (October 06), will leave on Tuesday (October 09).

From bad to worse: Here are things going wrong at Real Madrid

Real Madrid's miserable run of results sank to a new low as they slid to a shock 1-0 La Liga defeat at Alaves by conceding a goal deep in stoppage time on Saturday, marking their longest run without scoring in over 33 years.

Veteran midfielder Manu Garcia headed home after the ball hit the crossbar following a corner in the fifth minute of added time to send the raucous home crowd into ecstasy as Alaves climbed to third in the standings.

The triple European champions had been shackled by Alaves for most of the match and they were fortunate not to concede late in the second half before Garcia struck when Alaves's Jony fired narrowly wide on the break.

Alaves were the fourth team in a row to stop Real scoring and coach Julen Lopetegui will face further scrutiny with this defeat, which followed a 1-0 loss at CSKA Moscow in the Champions League, a 3-0 thrashing at Sevilla and a goalless draw with Atletico Madrid.

"This is a very tough moment and it's clear that the coach is the first person responsible," Lopetegui told a news conference.

"Sometimes things go your way and other times they don't, the important thing is that the players stick together and we will start scoring again."

Real are still joint top of the standings with 14 points after eight games but they could drop down to fourth if leaders Barcelona, Sevilla and Atletico Madrid all win on Sunday.

Alaves, whose fortunes have been transformed since coach Abelardo Fernandez took over last December when they were fighting against relegation, rose to third, level on points with Real and Barca.

Since Abelardo became coach, only Real, Barcelona and Atletico have taken more points than them in La Liga.

Embattled Real boss Lopetegui made five changes to the team that limped to defeat in Moscow, recalling Sergio Ramos and Gareth Bale while leaving out Marco Asensio.

Lopetegui was forced to take early action in the second half due to an injury to Karim Benzema, bringing on centre forward Mariano Diaz which briefly led to Real playing a more direct game.

The former Spain coach also had to take off Bale later in the game, replacing him with Brazilian teenager Vinicius Jr, and earlier he had withdrawn defensive midfielder Casemiro for Spain forward Asensio in a desperate bid to find a goal.

Alaves continued to snaffle out any danger, though, and when the deadlock was finally broken it was down the other end off the head of Garcia, who turned the visitors' frustrations into despair.

"We had to make changes because we had injuries, to Karim and Gareth. All negative factors are piling up on us," added Lopetegui.

"We have to pick ourselves up and the international break will serve us well because we have a lot of important players who are not fit."

Alaves coach Abelardo, was delighted with his side's first home win over Real since 1931.

"It's the dream victory because we scored so late and they couldn't even take kick off," he said.

"This victory takes us to 14 points and that's something tremendous, and it's magnified by the size of the team we have beaten."

Italian champions Juventus could be hit with a partial closure of their Allianz Stadium after racist chanting was heard aimed at Napoli's Senegalese defender Kalidou Koulibaly during their game at the weekend, it was reported on Monday.

Massimiliano Allegri's side won 3-1 to move six points clear of Carlo Ancelotti's southerners in front of a record crowd of 39,552 in Turin for a league match.

Gazzetta dello Sport reported that all three Italian Football Federation (FIGC) observers in different parts of the stadium reported hearing Koulibaly targeted by the chanting.

Fans were also reported to have called Napoli coach Carlo Ancelotti 'a pig', an insult which goes back to his coaching days at Juventus from 1999 to 2001.

As a result, the 'Curva Sud' could be closed for at least one game when the disciplinary report is released on Tuesday.

Spain's biggest three clubs, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid, find themselves in the bizarre situation of having made poor starts to the campaign by their usual high standards while not losing any ground in the La Liga title race.

Champions Barca dropped points for the third game in a row on Saturday when they salvaged a 1-1 draw at home to Athletic Bilbao with a late equaliser.

Even after drawing at home with Girona and sliding to a shock 2-1 defeat at minnows Leganes during the week, Barca remain on top of the standings on goal difference.

That is because Real Madrid failed to win for the third time in four league outings, drawing 0-0 with Atletico Madrid on Saturday.

"Leaders, despite everything," said the front page of the Barcelona-based newspaper Sport.

Real have the same number of points as they did after seven games last season.

Yet whereas they were seven points adrift of Barca at this stage of the last campaign, which they finished an astonishing 17 points off the pace, now they are locked on 14 points with the Catalans at the summit.

No team has led the La Liga standings with such a low number of points after seven games since the 1993-94 season.

Real and Barca's twin struggles contrast with their ruthless form of a few years ago, with Real sweeping to the 2011-12 title with 100 points and the Catalans racking up a century of points the following season.

Atletico, the only serious challenger to the duopoly of Real and Barca in the last 14 years and who won the title in 2014, have made their worst ever start to a season under coach Diego Simeone in taking 12 points from seven games.

They remain, however, only two points behind their usual rivals, sitting fourth.

Sevilla have benefited the most from the stumbling form of the usual suspects and are currently third after winning three games on the bounce, including thrashing Real 3-0 last Wednesday.

Surprise package Alaves, meanwhile, could join Real and Barca at the top of the table if they beat Levante on Sunday.

'FORGOTTEN HOW TO SCORE'

Real coach Julen Lopetegui remained calm despite his side's worrying form in front of goal, scoring only twice in four games. Daily Marca remarked that the European champions have "forgotten how to score".

"The season is going to be very tough and very long," said Lopetegui after the 0-0 draw with Atletico.

"We don't focus on our rivals, we focus on ourselves. We're only seven games into the season and everything is to play for. I'm happy because the team showed pride, personality and played good football."

Barca defender Jordi Alba, meanwhile, was fiercely critical of his side after they took two points from a possible nine.

"That's three games where we haven't won, it's clear that we need to change things to start winning again," he said.

"We're not relaxed at all, we have to look at many aspects of our game. But this has only just begun, despite not winning, we're still at the top of the table and that means the league is very equal.

"Teams that you would think cannot beat you are doing so. We have to change a lot of things and each of us has to give 100 percent."

La Liga wide open as Real, Barca, Atletico stumble

Australian midfielder Mile Jedinak announced his retirement from international football on Monday, bringing the curtain down on a 79-cap career which included leading the Socceroos at two World Cups.

The Aston Villa player led his country at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil and this year's tournament in Russia, having also captained the side to an Asian Cup triumph on home soil in 2015.

The 34-year-old announced his decision in a lengthy Instagram post, three months before Australia launch their continental title defence in the United Arab Emirates.

"I can confirm that after much deliberation I have made the decision to retire from playing international football," Jedinak wrote.

"As a young boy growing up, it was my dream to play for Australia and to pull on the famous green and gold shirt to represent my country.

"To have been given the opportunity to not only fulfil that dream, but to have done it 79 times, and many of which as captain, makes me incredibly proud and thankful."

Jedinak, who also played at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, scored 20 goals for his country, a majority of them from the penalty spot, including both of Australia's tallies in their group stage exit in Russia.

"It is an enormous privilege to represent your country and one I did not take lightly," Jedinak said. "Words will never be able to do justice the feeling of immense pride I felt when representing Australia.

"I gave everything I had in every single game I played to try and achieve success for our nation.

"However, after a huge amount of time reflecting and discussing with those closest with me, I feel that it is the right time to move aside in order to focus on my club football and prolonging that journey."

Football Federation Australia (FFA) thanked Jedinak for his contribution to the national side and called him a "great role model" for the country's footballers.

Head coach Graham Arnold also paid tribute.

"Mile has been great leader for the Socceroos and great player for Australia," Arnold said in FFA statement. "He is held in fantastic regard by his team mates, the coaches and staff that have worked with him, as well as the fans.

"I congratulate Mile on a superb international career, and now look forward to seeing other squad members step up as Socceroos leaders after the international retirements of Mile and Tim Cahill."

La Liga champions Barcelona's domestic struggles continued as they dropped points for the third game in a row, drawing 1-1 at home to Athletic Bilbao on Saturday after Lionel Messi and Sergio Busquets had begun the match on the substitutes' bench.

Substitute Munir El Haddadi averted a first home defeat for Barca in more than two years by sliding in an equaliser in the 84th minute, meeting a cross by Messi who had been sent on along with Busquets in the second half as Barca chased the game.

Oscar de Marcos had given Athletic a deserved lead in the 41st minute with a volley after Inaki Williams had missed two clear chances to score for the Basque side, who had not picked up a point at the Nou Camp since 2004 when current Barca coach Ernesto Valverde was in charge.

Barca are top of the table with 14 points after seven games but will lose their lead if Real Madrid beat Atletico Madrid in a city derby later on Saturday.

Despite drawing at home to Girona and losing at minnows Leganes after starting without key first-teamers such as Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Samuel Umtiti, Barca coach Valverde made the eye-catching decision to field a team without midfield anchor Busquets and all-time top scorer Messi.

The Catalans made a strong start and had an early penalty appeal waved away when Philippe Coutinho went over in the area but Athletic, who were beaten 3-0 at home by Villarreal in mid-week, soon started to put their stamp on the game.

Williams narrowly missed the target as he struck a bouncing ball around the area and the forward later rounded Marc-Andre ter Stegen but failed to capitalise.

Barca had sporadic chances down the other end, as Suarez struck wide from a free kick and was then thwarted by goalkeeper Unai Simon at point blank range, but Athletic made it third time lucky when De Marcos slid to convert Markel Susaeta’s cross.

Messi was brought on 10 minutes into the second period to a rousing reception from the home fans and Barca’s play instantly improved, with the Argentine smashing a shot against the post and narrowly firing wide, after Coutinho had struck the crossbar.

Athletic’s resistance finally caved in when Munir turned in Messi’s low cross and Ivan Rakitic had a final chance to win it late on for the Catalans, but sent the ball flying over the bar.

Football: Barcalona's struggles continue with home draw to Athletic Bilbao

Lawyers for Cristiano Ronaldo said on Friday (September 28) they would sue German magazine Der Spiegel after it published "blatantly illegal" accusations by an American woman who alleges she was raped by the Portuguese soccer star in 2009.

Ronaldo's lawyer Christian Schertz said in a statement the report was "an inadmissible reporting of suspicions in the area of privacy", and that he would seek legal redress for his client from the magazine.

The statement was sent to Reuters by Ronaldo's agent Gestifute in response to a request for comment on the Der Spiegel story. Gestifute did not answer any specific questions about the content of the Der Spiegel report, which Reuters was unable to independently verify.

Ronaldo is one of the biggest names in world sport. He has been named the player of the year five times and transferred to Juventus from Real Madrid this summer for 100 million euros.

The Italian club declined to comment on the Der Spiegel report.

The magazine said the rape allegedly took place in June 2009 in a hotel room in Las Vegas, according to Leslie Mark Stovall, the lawyer for the alleged victim, Kathryn Mayorga.

Ronaldo and Mayorga then reached an out-of-court agreement, according to Stovall as reported in the magazine.

It said, according to Stovall, that she had pledged never to speak of the accusation again and Ronaldo paid her $375,000.

"Kathryn was sexually assaulted in June 2009 by an individual named Cristiano Ronaldo," Mayorga's lawyer, Leslie Mark Stovall, said in a video published online by Der Spiegel.

Reuters was not able to independently verify Mayorga's allegations.

Stovall did not immediately respond to email requests from Reuters for comment on the report and Mayorga was not available for comment in telephone calls to her home.

Her lawyer told Der Spiegel, however, that he had filed a civil complaint seeking to declare the non-disclosure agreement void.

"The purpose of this lawsuit is to hold Cristiano Ronaldo responsible within a civil court of law for the injuries he has caused Kathryn Mayorga and the consequences of those injuries," Stovall told Der Spiegel.

Schertz said he would seek compensation from Der Spiegel for "moral damages in an amount corresponding to the gravity of the infringement, which is probably one of the most serious violations of personal rights in recent years."

The magazine's Deputy Editor-in-Chief, Alfred Weinzierl, told Reuters that Der Spiegel had repeatedly written to Ronaldo's management and lawyers about the allegations before publishing its report.

"We sent written questions, to which there were no answers. Nobody sued us in connection with earlier Ronaldo reports," he said in an email.

Mayorga told Der Spiegel she no longer felt bound by the non-disclosure agreement as she suffers from the consequences of the night nine years ago.

"I've had like these serious breakdowns," she told the magazine. "And again, blaming of the rape. And I blame him, and I blame myself for signing that thing."

Watch: Eden Hazard's wonder goal against Liverpool is breaking the internet

Jose Mourinho confirmed that midfielder Paul Pogba has been stripped of the vice-captaincy of the Manchester United.

The manager further refused to offer an explanation for his decision. But it is said that growing tensions between United's star midfielder and manager is the reason behind his sacking.

Mourinho, however, insisted that it wasn't because of a dispute with the World Cup-winning France midfielder who returned to United in 2016 for 105 million euros (then $116 million).

"The only truth is that I made the decision of Paul not to be the second captain any more but no fallout, no problems at all," Mourinho said.

Mourinho added that it was "just one decision that I don't have to explain."

Pogba criticised United's style of play under Mourinho this weekend when he called on the team to attack more.

The Best FIFA Football Awards, a complete list of winners

Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi's decade-long domination of football's individual awards is under threat from Real Madrid and Croatia midfielder Luka Modric and Liverpool's Egyptian forward Mohamed Salah when FIFA's player of the year is announced on Monday.

For the first time in 12 years, Messi is not even nominated among the three finalists for the award after early exits for Argentina at the World Cup and Barcelona in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

Both Messi and Ronaldo have won FIFA's award in different guises five times each, and the Portuguese can move out on his own after winning a third straight Champions League title with Real Madrid before heading for pastures new with Juventus in July.

For a sixth straight season, Ronaldo was the Champions League's top scorer with 15 goals and also scored four times at the World Cup, including a hat-trick against Spain in a thrilling 3-3 draw to open Portugal’s campaign.

However, Portugal's last 16 exit to Uruguay in Russia and Ronaldo's failure to score in the semi-finals or final of the Champions League has opened the door for Modric.

'The year of Luka'

Croatia's captain was an inspirational figure as they surpassed all expectations to reach the World Cup final and also played a big role in Madrid's Champions League and Club World Cup wins.

"I hope that Luka will be the best player in the world," Croatia manager Zlatko Dalic told AFP.

"He deserves it because he was the best player in the Club World Cup and the best player in the World Cup.

"Messi and Ronaldo are fantastic players, but this year is the year of Luka."

Salah also makes the podium for the first time after an incredible 44-goal debut season for Liverpool that carried the Reds to the Champions League final.

However, a shoulder injury suffered early on in the final robbed him of the chance to help Liverpool lift the trophy and also meant he wasn't in peak condition to lead Egypt's World Cup bid.

Despite scoring in each of his two appearances in Russia, The Pharaohs bowed out at the group stage with three defeats.

France's World Cup-winning coach Didier Deschamps is favourite to win the best coach award ahead of Dalic and former Real coach Zinedine Zidane, who stepped down in June after overseeing three Champions League triumphs in just two and a half years in charge.

Even if they lose out on the best player award, Messi and Ronaldo could walk away with a prize as they are both nominated for the Puskas award for best goal.

Messi's solitary World Cup goal against Nigeria and Ronaldo's spectacular overhead kick against his future employers in the Champions League quarter-finals are two of 10 goals on the shortlist, also including Gareth Bale's acrobatic strike for Real in the Champions League final.

The best goalkeeper prize is to be contested by France captain Hugo Lloris, Denmark's Kasper Schmeichel and Belgium's Thibaut Courtois, whose World Cup heroics earned him a move to Madrid from Chelsea.

Lyon's Norwegian striker Ada Hegerberg and German midfielder Dzsenifer Marozsan are joined by Brazilian five-time winner Marta of Orlando Pride in the running for the best women's player after winning the Champions League with the French giants.

Reynold Pedros of Lyon, Japan boss Asako Takakura and Netherlands coach Sarina Wiegman are in the running for best women's coach.

Arsenal thump Vorskla 4-2 in Europa League opener

Chelsea defeated PAOK Salonika 1-0 here Thursday in the 2018-2019 Europa League opener for both teams.

The contest between the resurgent Blues and the team that finished second in the Greek top-flight last year was far more lopsided than the score would indicate.

Despite leaving striker Eden Hazard at home to rest, Chelsea enjoyed 68 percent possession and outshot PAOK 22-4.

Willian, wearing the captain's armband for the first time in an official match, got the game's only goal in the 7th minute. Taking a pass from Ross Barkley, the Brazilian waited for PAOK keeper Alexandros Paschalakis to come off his line before sliding the ball under him and into the net.

The victory leaves Chelsea with 3 points, the same as BATE Borisov, but the Belarusian club lead Group L on goal difference after beating Vidi FC 2-0.

Chelsea start Europa League campaign with 1-0 win over PAOK

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola returns to the touchline for the Premier League champions' visit to Cardiff City looking for his team to recover from a shock midweek home defeat to Lyon.

The City manager, serving a one-match UEFA suspension for being sent to the stands in last season's quarter-final defeat to Liverpool, watched in horror from the stands as a dismal first-half display led to defeat against the French side.

After accumulating 100 points in the Premier League last season, winning the Champions League for the first time in City's history is the next goal for Guardiola.

Yet, an unexpected defeat to begin their European campaign exposed City's failure to add reinforcements to arguably the only area of the pitch where they lack genuine strength in depth.

Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho has been inspirational for City in his five seasons in the Premier League but he was at fault in the build-up to both Lyon goals on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old may be due a break in the Welsh capital this weekend having played every minute of City’s seven games so far in the new campaign

But Guardiola has no natural replacement after missing out on his pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Jorginho, who instead chose to follow his former Napoli boss Maurizio Sarri to Stamford Bridge.

City’s failure to land an alternative has seen Guardiola enter the new season short of cover for a crucial position in his 4-3-3 system.

Instead, City spent a club record fee on further strengthening their attacking options, signing Algerian winger Riyad Mahrez from Leicester for £60 million (67.5m euros).

Despite the loss of Belgian playmaker Kevin De Bruyne through injury, Mahrez has started just two league games so far and not yet completed a full 90 minutes for Guardiola.

Magnificent in Leicester’s title-winning season of 2015-16, Mahrez is not the first new signing to have required time to adapt to Guardiola’s demanding ways.

But, in hindsight, a different type of midfield player might have been a better acquisition for City this summer even if his manager has no doubts that he will prove a long-term success at his club.

"Riyad is going to come back to the same form we saw when he was with Leicester," insisted Guardiola, citing Bernardo Silva's stunning start to the campaign after a year to bed into City's system.

Silva scored his side's goal in midweek and is likely to retain his place, but Guardiola is expected to make changes in his search for a reaction against a Cardiff side still looking for their first victory since returning to the top flight.

Sergio Aguero and Leroy Sane are expected to return after impressing off the bench against Lyon.

The 21st edition of football World Cup has started and the&nbspfirst match will be played between host Russia and Saudi Arabia at Luzhniki Stadium, Moscow. Want to know who will win the first match of the World Cup? The cat's out of the bag: it's Russia. At least that's the prediction of Achilles, a cat in St Petersburg reputed to have psychic powers.

Offered a choice of two bowls of food, the white feline hesitated before choosing one with the Russian flag, dismissing Saudi Arabia's chances of a win in Moscow on Thursday - a relief to the host nation, considered one of the weakest sides in the tournament despite the home advantage.

Achilles, who lives in St Petersburg's Hermitage museum, is deaf, something his minders say means he will not be easily distracted by onlookers while making his prediction. They did not say whether the sight of the national flags might sway his choice.

Russia vs Saudi Arabia: Cat Achilles predicts winner of opener match

Russian women should avoid sex with non-white foreign men during the soccer World Cup because they could become single mothers to mixed race children, a senior lawmaker in Moscow said on Wednesday.

Even when Russian women marry foreigners the relationships often end badly, said Tamara Pletnyova, head of parliament's committee for families, women and children. Women are often stranded abroad or in Russia but unable to get their children back, she said.

She spoke in response to a question from a radio station about the so-called "Children of the Olympics" after the Moscow Games in 1980, a time when contraception was not widely available in the country.

The term was used during the Soviet era to describe non-white children conceived at international events after relationships between Russian women and men from Africa, Latin America, or Asia. Many of the children faced discrimination.

"We must give birth to our children. These (mixed race) kids suffer and have suffered since Soviet times," Pletnyova told Govorit Moskva radio station.

"It's one thing if they're of the same race but quite another if they're of a different race. I'm not a nationalist, but nevertheless I know that children suffer. They are abandoned, and that's it, they stay here with mum," she said.

Pletnyova said she that she would like Russian citizens to get married "out of love regardless of their ethnicity".

Another lawmaker said foreign fans could bring viruses to the World Cup and infect Russians.

In comments to Govorit Moskva radio station, Alexander Sherin also said Russians should be careful in their interactions with foreigners as they might try to circulate banned substances at the tournament.

Thousands of soccer fans from 31 countries are travelling to the World Cup in Russia that kicks off on Thursday with an opening ceremony in the capital followed by a match between the host team and Saudi Arabia.

Russians make up the majority ethnicity in the country but there are dozens of minority groups, as well as a large labour migrant force predominantly from Central Asia and the South Caucasus.

The comment was made by Tamara Pletnyova, head of parliament's committee for families, women and children. The Football World Cup kicks off in Russia today

Also read: 88 years of the Football World Cup "It's one thing if they're of the same race but quite another if they're of a different race. Russian women should avoid sex with foreign men during World Cup: Lawmaker

At last, the high mass of the global game will begin. After all the lobbying, politicking and campaigning by Morocco and the joint United 2026 bid for the World Cup in eight years time, the focus will turn to the football, with the opening game between hosts Russia and Saudi Arabia.

At Red Square, fans from all over the world have begun gathering. Colourful and dancing Peruvians, who are celebrating their return to the finals for the first time in 36 years, singing Colombians, who have purchased more than 60,000 tickets, Argentines with Lionel Messi shirts and Socceroos fans, who have come all the way from Australia.

As the evening progressed on Tuesday they watched the fireworks to commemorate Russia day, the national day of the hosts. Security was reinforced, but all passed without incident as World Cup fever hit Moscow. On Wednesday, more fans flooded the historical centre of the Russian capital, taking in the beautiful architecture, the historical monuments and the Lenin's tomb.

Russian fans haven't warmed up to the tournament yet. The Zbornaya return to the world stage, but with fear of humiliation. At last year's Confederations Cup Russia were very underwhelming, crashing out in the first round in a modest group with Mexico, New Zealand and Portugal. Cristiano Ronaldo and his team dismantled the hosts with ease.

The worry for Russia is that they have declined since then, playing high-profile friendlies, including Brazil and France. Russia remain very fragile at the back and have little firepower up front, in spite of Fedor Smolov, a talented striker, who hasn't found the net enough.

Still, against Saudi Arabia, they have a chance. Vladimir Putin, the Russian President, was optimistic in general terms, speaking about the tournament as "a dream for Russia." He emphasised that Russia did everything to deliver a perfect world championship.

That depends, not just on how the outside world sees and experiences Russia, but also on how the tournament develops, with the football on display. Germany and Brazil are sky-high favourites to progress to the final, but there are other challenges who may disturb their dreams, such as, France and Spain.

Still, in the end, on July 15, the day of the final, the Peruvian and Colombian fans mat they be still celebrating, not in Red Square, but just as a memory and how well they did.

FIFA World Cup 2018: Russia eye winning start against Saudi Arabia

FIFA World Cup 2018 has begun with its first controversy hitting the tournament and creating turmoil.

Even before the teams took their position on the ground, coaches and football associations have levelled allegations against each other, with some even preferring to change their sides.

With less than 24 hours left for the carnival to start, Spanish national team has been plunged into crisis after its former coach Julen Lopetegui was sacked by the country's football association after reports emerged of him signing a three-year-contract with Real Madrid.

Left with no option, the Spanish football federation (RFEF) announced it had dismissed the 51-year-old because negotiations occurred without any information to the football association.

The termination was surely a first of its kind incident in FIFA World Cup's history, with the association describing it as an "obligation".

Hours later, another news surfaced that Spain sporting director Fernando Hierro replaced Lopetegui with immediate effect and will coach the team which is already in Russia for the tournament.

Lopetegui became Spain's manager in 2016 following Vicente del Bosque's retirement and remained unbeaten through his reign. Under him, Spain won 14 of 20 games with Lopetegui in charge, drawing the remaining six.

The stats highlight two reasons behind his exit - either he made a foolish decision or it was a forced one.

Though Spain is not a team of World-Cup contenders but they surely a tough competitor.

The country will now be coached by a footballer with 89 caps for Spain, but will he be able to turn the tables in his team's favour, is yet to be seen.
