<p>Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu on Wednesday (June 8) backed Russia's calls to lift sanctions on the country which were imposed on Moscow by the Western countries in the aftermath of the Russia-Ukraine war.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Just like Ukraine, Russia is also a major wheat supplier. However, the exports have been hit by the sanctions, causing an impact on the global supply chain, and threatening a global food crisis. Sanctions have also impeded the export of Russian grain and fertiliser.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If we need to open up the international market to Ukrainian grain, we see the removal of obstacles standing in the way of Russia's exports as a legitimate demand," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations – Vassily Nebenzia – walked out of a security council meeting after European Council president Charles Michel accused them of using food supplies as “a stealth missile against developing countries”. The world is looking at a severe food crisis and Michel blamed the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine for the situation. Ukraine is a leading provider of food grains in the world, but the Russian military has successfully blocked ships carrying food grains from Ukrainian cities and that is resulted in a huge supply chain issue.</p>

<p>Michel spoke about his experience while visiting Ukraine and said that he saw a huge amount of grain and wheat getting wasted because of the ships stuck at the Ukrainian port of Odesa for a huge amount of time.</p>

<p>“This is driving up food prices, pushing people into poverty and destabilising entire regions,” Michel said according to The Guardian. “Russia is solely responsible for this looming food crisis. Russia alone.”</p>

<p>This resulted in Nebenzia walking out of the meeting in protest. The ambassador told Reuters that he could stay longer because of “the lies that Charles Michel came here to distribute”.</p>

<p>Ukraine's Ambassador to Turkiye&nbsp;Vasyl Bodnar on Friday alleged that Russia was stealing Ukrainian grain and sending it abroad including to Turkey.</p>

<p>"Russia shamelessly steals Ukrainian grain and sends it overseas from Crimea, including to Turkey," said Ambassador Bodnar. He was quoted by AFP.</p>

<p>"We have asked for Turkey's help to resolve the issue," he added in a message on Twitter.</p>

<p>Ukraine has been a major exporter of wheat and sunflower oil. However, Russian invasion of the country has disrupted the export leading many to predict a global food crisis. Russian invasion started on February 24. The conflict has completed 100 days.</p>

The disturbed supply chain raised concerns about the risk of hunger around the world. Russia and Ukraine produce around 30 per cent of the global wheat supply.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, in a positive development, the Russian defence ministry said on Thursday (June 2) that vessels carrying grain can leave Ukraine's ports in the Black Sea via "humanitarian corridors", Reuters reported quoting the Interfax news agency said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per the report, Russia is also ready to guarantee the safety of the vessels. Interfax added that Russia would not use the humanitarian situation in Ukraine for what Moscow calls its "special military operation" in Ukraine, the defence ministry noted.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kremlin said on Monday (May 30) indicated that Russia was ready to ensure 'unhindered' supply of food grains from Ukrainian ports. Kremlin quoted Russian President Vladimir Putin as he spoke with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.</p>

<p>One of the effects Ukraine conflict has had on the world is food crisis. Ukraine exports foodgrains. But the export has been interrupted due Russian invasion. The conflict has resulted in prices of grain, cooking oil, fertiliser and energy soaring, hurting global growth.</p>

<p>The United Nations, which says a global food crisis is deepening, is trying to broker a deal to unblock Ukraine's grain exports though Western leaders have blamed Russia for holding the world to ransom by blockading Ukrainian ports.</p>

<p>"During the discussion of the situation in Ukraine, emphasis was placed on ensuring safe navigation in the Black and Azov seas and eliminating the mine threat in their waters," the Kremlin said of Putin's call with Erdogan.</p>

<p>"Vladimir Putin noted the readiness of the Russian side to facilitate the unhindered sea transit of goods in coordination with Turkish partners. This also applies to the export of grain from Ukrainian ports."</p>

<p>Putin, according to the Kremlin, added that if sanctions were lifted, then Russia could "export significant volumes of fertilizers and agricultural products."</p>

<p>During his conversation with Vladimir Putin, Erdogan said that Turkey was willing to take on a role in an "observation mechanism" between Moscow, Kyiv and the United Nations, if an agreement is reached.</p>

<p>He later told Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy that he "especially valued the project to create a secure sea route for exporting Ukrainian agricultural products," his office said, adding he welcomed, in principle, the idea of making Istanbul a headquarters for the "observation mechanism".</p>

<p>Sullivan was responding to a question if President Joe Biden will have a talk with Prime Minister Narendra Modi to reverse India’s decision to ban wheat exports.</p>

<p>“Food security will be the topic of conversation at the Quad,” Sullivan said on Sunday.</p>

<p>Ukraine and Russia account for 29 per cent of global wheat and 62 per cent of sunflower oil exports. The invasion has exacerbated food price inflation in emerging markets and developing economies and has impacted some of the poorest and most vulnerable countries.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Global food prices are almost 30 per cent higher than the same time last year, according to the UN.</p>

<p>India was forced to halt wheat exports after a brutal heatwave destroyed the crops, causing inflation and shortage in the country.</p>

They also got to speak about it when they had a short video bilateral 2+2 and when Indian ministers came to Washington.”</p>

<p>“So, it won't be a new conversation but a continuation of the conversation they have already had on how we see the picture in Ukraine and impacts of Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine, apart from wider sets of concerns in the world including food security concerns. So, they will talk all of that through, will leave the specific, they had private and constructive exchanges. This will be similarly constructive and straightforward.”</p>

<p>Amid the growing shortages exacerbated by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, a key grain producer, the new funding will finance projects over the next 15 months to boost food and fertilizer production, facilitate greater trade and support vulnerable households and producers, the&nbsp;World&nbsp;Bank&nbsp;said.</p>

<p>"Food price increases are having devastating effects on the poorest and most vulnerable,"&nbsp;World&nbsp;Bank&nbsp;President David Malpass said in a statement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India’s decision to ban wheat exports amidst an acute global shortage in the wake of the Russia-Ukraine war and climate change has caused reverberations across the world.</p>

<p>While the G7 slammed the move as the global wheat prices soared across the markets, India found unlikely support from none other than the Chinese media.</p>

<p>Global Times, a Chinese Communist Party-backed tabloid paper, has said, “Blaming India won't solve the food problem."</p>

<p>In an editorial, the paper said, "Now, the agriculture ministers from G7 urge India not to ban wheat exports, then why won't G7 nations themselves move to stabilise food market supply by hiking their exports?".</p>

<p>"Although India is the second-largest wheat producer in the world, it accounts for only a small part of global wheat exports. By contrast, some developed economies, including the US, Canada, the EU and Australia, are among major exporters of wheat," it added.</p>

<p>The paper argued that if some western countries decide to reduce wheat exports in the wake of a potential global food crisis, “they will be in no position to criticise India, a country that faces pressure to secure its own food supply.”</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the price of wheat has jumped to 435 euros ($453) per tonne as the European market opened, AFP reported.</p>
