A strengthening Tropical Storm Eta made landfall on Florida’s Lower Matecumbe Key on Sunday night, days after leaving scores of dead and over 100 missing in Mexico and Central America

Tropical storm Eta makes landfall in Florida

Tropical Storm Eta headed towards Florida on Sunday and was set to strengthen into a hurricane again after slamming Cuba and earlier cutting a deadly path through Central America and southern Mexico.

As the storm left Cuba, the US National Hurricane Center said it was "forecast to become a hurricane as it moves near or over the Florida Keys tonight and early Monday."

The NHC warned of dangerous storm surge, flash floods and strong winds.

Eta brought strong winds and torrential rain to Cuba after having cut a destructive and deadly path through parts of Central America and southern Mexico.

Cuba's meteorology institute Insmet said Eta made landfall at 4:30 am (0930 GMT) on the border between the central provinces of Sancti Spiritus and Ciego de Avila and left the island by the northern coast nearly five hours later.

Its maximum sustained winds were around 95 kilometers per hour (about 60 miles per hour) with higher gusts.

A tropical storm is considered a hurricane when it hits wind speeds of 74 miles per hour.

While leaving the island, Eta punished the archipelago of Jardines del Rey, north of Ciego de Avila, but state television reported that the 600 foreign tourists vacationing there were protected.

Heavy rains were reported in the eastern half of Cuba, where authorities have evacuated thousands of people due to the risk of flooding.

President Miguel Diaz-Canel convened an emergency government meeting and "no loss of life or significant damage to homes have been reported," according to state media.

Before the storm arrived, 74,000 people were evacuated, 8,000 of them to shelters set up by the authorities, the reports said.

The Hurricane Centre said forecasts showed "the center of Eta will continue to move over the Florida Straits between Cuba and the Bahamas this afternoon, pass near or over the Florida Keys tonight and early Monday, and be over the southeastern Gulf of Mexico late Monday and Tuesday."

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis also declared a state of emergency in the state's southern counties on Saturday in advance of the storm, even as residents in the rain either protested or celebrated Joe Biden's win in the US presidential election

Eta hit Nicaragua on Tuesday as a powerful hurricane before losing strength. It caused torrential rains that have left some 200 victims dead or missing in Central America.

The most affected country has been Guatemala, where about 150 people are missing.

In Honduras, heavy flooding in the north and northwest of the country killed 23 people, according to authorities. Torrential rain and a bitter cold front linked to Eta have also claimed at least 20 lives in the southern Mexican state of Chiapas.

US Election 2020 Key States

Pennsylvania

It is a state where Biden was born, and a region that has seen decades of industrial decline.

Trump supporters are campaigning heavily in this state, with campaign team even going door-to-door in the suburbs to lure the voters.

Biden's big support will be big cities of the states, while Trump is expecting support from the state's rural west and conservative central areas.

Pennsylvania's suburbs and northeast will be crucial to decide which way the state is leading.

According to an average of state polls by the website RealClearPolitics (RCP), Biden leads Trump by 5.6 percentage points in the state.

US Election 2020 Key States: Michigan

Trump managed to narrowly win this state in 2016.

Michigan, also known as the Great Lakes states, is concerned about the state of the economy due to coronavirus pandemic and Trump's response to the crisis.

Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer has continually clashed with Trump over issues related to coronavirus and the strict lockdowns in the state have angered conservatives.

Recently, a group of right-wing members was also arrested by the FBI for plotting to kidnap Whitmer.

RCP says Biden is ahead in Michigan with 7.2 percentage points.

US Election 2020 Key States: Wisconsin

The 2016 Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton paid the price for not campaigning in the state in the last election.

To not repeat such a mistake this time, Democrats held their national convention in Wisconsin though the event was made online due to coronavirus crisis.

Both Trump and Biden and their Vice Presidential candidates Mike Pence and Kamala Harris have campaigned in the state.

Biden is leading in Wisconsin by 6.3 percentage points, according to RCP.

Florida

It is largest of all the swing states and a large number of retired individuals reside here.

The state's massive Latino voters will be crucial and polls suggest the support for Democrats has declined from the 2016 levels.

However, Florida's senior citizen voters are also moving away from Trump because of his handling of the pandemic.

Many experts say Florida is a Trump firewall; if he loses here, he will lose the presidency.

With a margin of 1.4 percentage points, Biden is leading in Florida too, as per RCP.

North Carolina

The state went with Trump last time but only with a margin of three points and both parties are wary of this.

It has a popular Democrat as the governor who has garnered a lot of praise for his balanced approach to the crisis.

Republicans held their convention here, though the event was majorly online.

According to RCP, Biden is ahead in North Carolina by 2.7 points.

Arizona

The state has been a Republican bastion for decades, but as the number of Latino community rose and with the arrival of liberals from California, the state's electorate can go either way.

Conservative voters praise Trump's efforts to control immigration and promise to build a wall at the Mexican border.

However, by heavily criticising state's late senator John McCain, who still is admired a lot in Arizona, Trump has hurt his prospects.

Cindy McCain, the late senator's widow, has also endorsed Biden for the presidency.

Biden leads Trump by 4 points in the state, says RCP.

Iowa

With a lead of almost 10 points, Trump won Iowa comfortably four years ago, but the race looks tighter this time around.

Currently, Biden is leading with 1.2 points in Iowa, as per RCP.

Georgia

Since 1992, no Democratic candidate has been able to win Georgia in the presidential race, but a lot has changed in recent years with a rise in Democratic support.

As per RCP, Biden is leading the race with 1.2 points.

US Election 2020 Key States: Ohio

Ohio has 18 electoral college voters, which is a major attraction for both the parties.

A Florida sheriff ordered his officers to not wear face masks -- and banned them from his office -- even as the southern US state has hit record daily coronavirus death tolls.

Sheriff Billy Woods emailed deputies on Tuesday to inform them of his new decision -- the new mask prohibition.

Brandenburg said in a statement. The two-minute clip had racked up more than 2 million views as of early Tuesday.

Isaias grazes Florida as tropical storm, heads up East Coast

Florida has not one but three major problems to deal with right now: The ongoing coronavirus pandemic which has made a comeback in the state, followed by the onset of storm Isaias, and predatory pythons.

Even though the kind of pythons in question - “Burmese pythons” are not naturally occurring in Florida, they recently appeared in large numbers across the Everglades, a national park wetland region in the state, which is described as a grassy, slow moving river.
