Eath, devastation rampant in Libya after flooding. Death toll climbs to 5300, about 10,000 missing; essential supplies dwindle.

Catastrophic flash floods trigger a spiraling death toll

What is behind Libya’s catastrophic flooding? Experts say extreme weather, vulnerable geography, and crumbling infrastructure made it worse.

Libya floods: Climate & infrastructure catastrophe

More than 5,000 people are feared dead and nearly 10,000 are still missing in the flood-hit eastern Libyan city of Derna, said local hospital director and the Red Cross on Tuesday (September 12). A minister from the administration that controls east Libya also said that a quarter of the city was wiped out by the floods after dams burst due to the storm which brought torrential rains in the region.

An Interior Ministry spokesman said that the death toll has exceeded 5,300 in the city of Derna alone from the flooding unleashed by Mediterranean Storm Daniel, reports AP news agency.

The head of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) in Libya said that around 10,000 people are thought to be missing after the major floods, and the death toll is likely to increase.

Days of torrential rains from the remains of former typhoon Hakui have resulted in more than 100 landslides in southern China. Now, these landslides have killed at least seven people. Meanwhile over 1300 remain trapped in floodwaters. Meanwhile, as flash floods batter the nation's southern region, Maoming city has launched a rather peculiar search operation. That's right; the city is hunting for crocodiles.

Authorities in eastern Libya said at least 2,000 people were killed and thousands more were missing after a massive flood ripped through the city of Derna following a heavy storm and rain.

Ahmed Mismari, the spokesperson for the Libyan National Army (LNA) that controls eastern Libya, said in a televised news conference that the disaster came after dams above Derna had collapsed, "sweeping whole neighbourhoods with their residents into the sea".

Mismari put the number of missing at 5,000-6,000.

Eastern Libya authorities say 2,000 dead in flood, thousands missing

Hundreds of people have been killed after Storm Daniel swept through the Mediterranean over the weekend, bringing strong winds and heavy floods to several countries, including Libya, over the past two days. As many as 4,250 people have been evacuated from flood-stricken areas after being airlifted or transferred in lifeboats across the region.

The officials said that the rescue and evacuation efforts were focused on villages near the city of Larissa and close to the River Pineios since parts of the river have overflowed. damaging villages further.

What’s the damage?

Greece: At least 15 killed after Storm Daniel brings ‘most intense’ rainstorms since 1930

Firefighters backed by the army were rescuing hundreds of people Saturday in villages in central Greece blocked off by floods that have claimed at least 10 lives.

"More than 2,850 people have been rescued since the beginning of the bad weather," fire department spokesman Yannis Artopios told broadcaster Mega on Saturday.

"There are still many people in the villages around Karditsa, Palamas and toward Trikala. They are not missing, they are trapped," he said.

Greek civil protection authorities said Saturday evening that seven people were officially listed as missing, including an Austrian couple visiting the area around the picturesque peak of Pelion in the Thessaly region of northeastern Greece.

Several houses remain under water in the village of Palamas and rescue workers were trying to reach marooned people, an AFP journalist said.

"It was truly hellish," said 54-year-old Palamas resident Eleni Patouli.

"We were stuck without help or information for hours. The (emergency services) 112 message to evacuate arrived just as we were facing up to the flooding and we had no means of escape," she told AFP.

The situation also remains worrying near the city of Larissa, a few kilometres to the east.

"We are having great difficulties with the Pinios river, next to the city of Larissa, which has overflowed and reached a height of 2.5 metres (eight feet) on the outskirts of Larissa," Artopios said.

The flooding has laid waste to thousands of hectares of rich agricultural land and farmers have also lost substantial livestock numbers.

'Extreme' weather event

"We are devastated. More than 1,500 pigs have drowned -- 70 percent of our farm suffered damage," said 58-year-old Thomas Kasos.

In the port city of Volos, the water supply has become a problem, since pumping stations and a large part of the supply network were damaged. The health ministry has warned that the water is not suitable for drinking.

"Gastroenteritis cases have appeared and there is a risk of that increasing if people don't have enough water. Authorities need to distribute at least two litres of drinking water to everyone," Elena Riza, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Athens School of Medicine, told public broadcaster ERT.

Traffic also remained challenging Saturday with the highway connecting Thessaloniki, the country's second largest city, and the capital Athens cut off in several places.

The storm, named "Daniel", struck the central coastal region of Magnesia on Monday and Tuesday before hitting other towns such as Karditsa and Trikala further inland on Wednesday.

Experts have described the event as "extreme in terms of the amount of water falling in a space of 24 hours".

The heavy rains and flooding follow devastating fires in Greece this summer that killed at least 26 people.

As the world warms, the atmosphere contains more water vapour which increases the risk of heavy precipitation in some parts of the world, notably in Asia, Western Europe and Latin America.

Combined with other factors such as urbanisation and land-use planning, these more intense rainfall events contribute to flooding.

Severe flooding in neighbouring Turkey and Bulgaria this week left 12 people dead.

Rescues underway in Greek towns cut off by floods

In pics | Record-breaking rain batters Hong Kong and Chinese city Shenzhen

Torrential rain has battered Hong Kong, which witnessed its highest hourly rainfall since records began 140 years ago, on Friday (September 8), causing widespread flooding across the densely packed city. At least one person was reported dead and more than 80 people were said to be injured in Hong Kong, as per Reuters citing officials.

Meanwhile, all schools, several subway stations and offices, in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen were shut after Typhoon Haikui’s residual storm clouds unleashed the heaviest rain since records began in 1952.

‘Black’ rainstorm warning in Hong Kong

The heaviest rainfall in at least 140 years has submerged streets, shopping malls and metro stations across Hong Kong and prompted officials to shut schools and ask workers to stay at home. Hong Kong’s observatory reported rainfall of 158.1 millimetres between 11:00 pm (local time) on Thursday and midnight on Friday.

The weather bureau also issued the highest “black” rainstorm warning and recorded more than 200 mm of rainfall on Hong Kong’s main island, Kowloon and the northeastern part of the city’s New Territories since Thursday night.

A report by Reuters citing a television news channel said that rescue workers took one person to hospital who was dead on arrival, while some 83 people were said to be injured.

The officials have also issued landslide risk warnings near the city’s mountainous terrain while streets turned into torrents and social media videos showed workers wading waist-deep in a station, as per Reuters.

The conditions were expected to last till at least Friday afternoon, said the weather bureau. They have also attributed this to the trough of low pressure associated with the remnant of Typhoon Haikui.

Hong Kong leader, John Lee said he was very concerned about the severe flooding in most parts of the city and has instructed all departments to respond with “all-out efforts”.

Travel and transport between Liantang Port and Wenjindu Port connecting Shenzhen and Hong Kong were also suspended due to flood damage, said the government.

All schools in Hong Kong have been suspended due to “extensive flooding,” said the officials, adding that employers have been asked to observe arrangements typically used for the strong wind signal 8, which brings the city to an effective standstill.

Meanwhile, Macau’s weather bureau issued the lowest “yellow” rainstorm warning on Friday, with much of the gambling hub operating as usual.

Record-breaking rainfall in Shenzhen

Heavy rains have also battered Shenzhen, where residents, as per Reuters were seen holding onto safety lines and wading cautiously through knee-deep floodwaters late on Thursday. China’s Meteorological Administration, on Friday, said that heavy rains will continue until early Saturday.

Chinese state media, Xinhua, said that between 5:00 pm (local time) Thursday and 6:00 am (local time) Friday, the average rainfall in Shenzhen was 202.8 mm while the maximum cumulative rainfall reached 469 mm, breaking multiple meteorological records which began over seven decades ago.

Officials in Shenzhen have said, “that primary and secondary schools and kindergartens across the city will suspend classes on Friday to ensure the citizen’s safety and property,” reported Xinhua.

Shenzhen’s observatory also issued emergency warnings advising residents to stay indoors and warning downpours were abrupt and intense. According to media reports, daily rainfall in the city located in the Pearl River Delta linking Hong Kong to the Chinese mainland was expected to exceed 500 mm.

The water level in the Shenzhen reservoir also reached its limit on Friday, prompting authorities to begin discharging water and warning residents downstream to stay away from the rivers.

Additionally, schools in 10 districts across Guangzhou city, which is some 130 kilometres from Shenzhen, were suspended.

Typhoon Haikui, which was later downgraded to a tropical depression, made landfall in China’s Fujian province on Tuesday and caused nearly $700 million in economic losses before moving to Guangdong.

The NHC as per a Reuters report said that it expects the powerful storm to near Mexico's popular Cabo San Lucas resort city by late Friday. The US government agency said that the hurricane should weaken before hitting the US West Coast this weekend. However, they warned that nevertheless, it will bring dangerous rains.

"If you've got weekend plans, it's probably time to start altering those plans," said NHC Deputy Director Jamie Rhome, as per the report. Rhome warned that the area from San Diego to Los Angeles and Las Vegas faced flood risks, in particular Palm Springs area will be at high risk when the storm hits this weekend.

Category 4 storm

As per the NHC advisory, hurricane Hilary was moving West northwest at nearly 12 mph or 19 kilometres per hour. The storm is packing a maximum sustained wind of nearly 130 mph or 215 kilometres per hour. It was upgraded to a category 4 storm overnight.

Rhome said that while icy waters of the California coastline typically weaken hurricanes and tropical storms, "this system is expected to hold on to its strength because it will be moving fast."

He also said that California and Southern Nevada face the risk of severe flooding caused by up to 10 inches or 25.4 centimetres of rainfall. The NHC, as per Reuters, warned a storm surge could cause coastal flooding and destructive waves along Mexico's Baja California peninsula.

After a record-breaking summer heat wave, hurricane Hilary's heavy rainfall is expected to hit California Nevada and neighbouring Arizona. In July, Phoenix, Arizona, both endured a month-long stretch of temperatures that exceeded 110 degrees Fahrenheit or 43 degrees Celsius.

As per the National Weather Service, the region was trapped under a "heat dome" of stagnant air. In mid-July, California's Death Valley desert hit temperatures exceeding 128 Fahrenheit or 53 degrees Celsius. This was among the highest temperatures recorded on the planet in the past 90 years.
