Local officials are gearing up to count ballots under enhanced security ahead of the November 3 United States midterm elections amid suspicious mailings and online intimidation and the fears of political interference in the process. The election workers who are responsible for registering voters, managing polling stations and counting ballots are facing a tough challenge, protecting themselves from threats and intimidation while maintaining public confidence in the results. Suspicious letters trigger security concerns Election offices in at least 32 states had received suspicious letters in the preceding days. In Louisiana, a letter containing white powder prompted an evacuation and sent an employee to the hospital for evaluation. The substance was, however, not found to be harmful in testing, officials said. The FBI and the US Postal Inspection Service are investigating the mailings. The cases illustrate the practical difficulties election administrators face as even a harmless suspicious package triggers security protocols that require evacuations, emergency assessments and additional precautions, diverting staff and resources during an already demanding period. The FBI has urged people with any information about threats against election workers or polling locations to contact their local FBI field office or submit an electronic tip. Threats extend beyond physical security In the 2020 presidential election, false claims of widespread fraud prompted harassment of officials involved in certifying and counting votes. The election workers are somewhat concerned about political leaders interfering with their work, besides being worried about politically motivated investigations. For election workers, the pressure continues after polling closes as ballots have to be processed, signatures and voter records checked where required, results tabulated and discrepancies investigated as per state laws. This can particularly take time where there are close contests involving large numbers of mail-in ballots. Though delays do not, by themselves, indicate irregularities, yet unverified allegations can spread rapidly online, and routine counting procedures may become the subject of partisan disputes and personal attacks. The FBI’s warning makes it mandatory for election offices to document threats, coordinate with law enforcement and ensure that employees know how to report suspicious communications or incidents. Protecting the people behind the count The stakes extend beyond the safety of individual workers. Persistent intimidation could make it harder for local authorities to recruit and retain experienced personnel, particularly in smaller jurisdictions where election administration depends on a limited pool of staff and temporary workers. Fear of threats and intimidation makes recruiting or retaining election workers more difficult. As Americans vote on November 3, election workers will be responsible for ensuring that ballots are handled as per established procedures, results are tabulated accurately and the public can scrutinise the process. The Justice Department threatened to prosecute California election officials if they knowingly count mail-in ballots from 20,000 people the Trump administration says are “likely noncitizens.” In a deeply polarised political climate, the credibility of midterm polls will not just depend on the votes cast but also on whether the officials counting them can do their work safely and without any intimidation.

US midterms 2026: Election workers face rising threats, vote-counting process under pressure

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has launched an investigation into suspicious mailings sent to election offices across the United States, some of which reportedly contained an ‘unknown substance’, just weeks before the midterm elections. In a statement on Thursday, the FBI said the letters had been sent to several locations, including secretaries of state offices and other election-related offices. Secretaries of state are generally responsible for overseeing elections at the state level.&nbsp; The bureau said investigators were working to identify those responsible for sending the suspicious mailings. The investigation is being conducted in coordination with the US Postal Inspection Service, which referred requests for comment to the FBI. Authorities have not disclosed the specific locations that received the letters. However, several states reported suspicious mailings earlier this week, raising concerns about the safety of election officials and staff ahead of the upcoming midterm elections.&nbsp; In Louisiana, an employee at the secretary of state's office in Baton Rouge was taken to an emergency room as a precaution on Tuesday after opening an envelope containing white powder, according to a spokesperson. Subsequent testing by law enforcement found no evidence of harmful substances. Oklahoma's State Election Board also received an envelope containing a ‘suspicious white powder’ on Tuesday, board secretary Paul Ziriax said.&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/ukraine-running-out-of-patriot-missiles-as-russian-ballistic-attacks-intensify-report-1792091203522">Ukraine running out of patriot missiles as Russian ballistic attacks intensify: Report</a>&nbsp;Meanwhile, Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose revealed on Wednesday that his office had been targeted in another incident involving a suspicious letter. In mid-2023, more than 100 suspicious letters containing white powder were mailed to public officials, including Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas and Colorado Representative Lauren Boebert. Authorities found no indication that the powder posed a danger.&nbsp; In November of that year, several election offices also received ballot envelopes containing white powder with traces of fentanyl, further heightening concerns about threats involving suspicious mail. The incidents have renewed attention to the risks faced by government officials and election workers, particularly during politically sensitive periods. The United States has also experienced deadly attacks involving contaminated mail in the past. Following the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, letters containing anthrax were sent to government offices and newsrooms. The attacks killed five Americans and sickened 17 others.

Federal authorities have arrested a Minnesota man accused of planning an ISIS-inspired mass shooting at the Mall of America, according to newly unsealed court records. Sheikhdoon Mohamud was arrested on Tuesday after allegedly purchasing an AK-47 rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition from an FBI confidential source. Prosecutors allege he intended to use the weapons in an attack at a festival at the Mall of America.&nbsp; The FBI had been investigating Mohamud since December 2024, when a confidential source started communicating with him about either traveling to Somalia to fight for al-Shabaab or carrying out a mass-casualty attack in the United States, according to court documents. Prosecutors cited numerous messages in which Mohamud allegedly discussed his desire for martyrdom. In one exchange, he reportedly talked about getting a gun here and just start killing a bunch of white people. By December 2025, prosecutors said Mohamud had expressed interest in supporting ISIS. The communications allegedly continued as he moved away from plans to travel overseas and increasingly focused on carrying out an attack inside the US.&nbsp;According to prosecutors, Mohamud cited the New Orleans New Year's Eve attacker and Omar Mateen, the gunman responsible for the Pulse Nightclub shooting, as sources of inspiration for his planned violence. Mohamud allegedly told the FBI source that he wanted to target the Mall of America because its owned by Jewish people. He reportedly added, so if I kill even 30 people no one would go there anymore.

<h2>Alleged Mall of America attack plot</h2>By August, Mohamud allegedly started arranging a meeting with the confidential source to obtain an AK-47 and ammunition. Prosecutors said he sent photographs of himself so the source could identify him. The two eventually agreed to meet on October 6 to complete the weapons purchase, according to the court documents. Mohamud allegedly indicated that he intended to carry out an attack on October 24 at the Hmong Arts Celebration at the Mall of America. During the meeting, an undercover FBI agent allegedly handed Mohamud a large duffel bag containing an AK-47 rifle and four magazines, along with a container holding 200 rounds of ammunition.&nbsp; The agent told Mohamud that he was a member of ISIS and questioned him about his plans. Prosecutors allege Mohamud again described plans to attack a festival at the Mall of America. According to the affidavit, Mohamud repeated that he believed the mall was owned by Jews and said he was angry at the bad treatment of Muslims following the May attack on an Islamic center in San Diego. Mohamud was arrested at gunpoint by FBI agents after leaving the vehicle, according to the affidavit.&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/christa-pike-wakes-after-failed-execution-asks-where-am-i-and-who-are-you-1791400286554">Christa Pike wakes after failed execution, asks 'Where am I and who are you?'</a><h2>Federal officials say attack was disrupted</h2>US Attorney for Minnesota Dan Rosen said the arrest demonstrated the role of federal law enforcement in identifying and disrupting potential threats before they could result in violence. "The American people and the citizens of Minnesota should know from yesterday's arrest, which was the culmination of an outstanding law enforcement and intelligence operation, that federal law enforcement is standing up to their calling to protect us," Rosen said.&nbsp;&nbsp;“Here, because of their vigilance and diligence, they were able to detect the threat and disrupt it before the defendant carried out his intention to kill, in his words, 'maybe 30 to 60 people,' as we allege in far greater detail in the complaint.” Rosen and FBI Special Agent Christopher Dodson described extensive communications between Mohamud and the confidential source, saying they indicated he was ‘100% committed’ to carrying out an attack. "The messages this defendant allegedly sent to others were chilling," Dodson said. "They show the idolization of ideologically motivated violence, a callous disregard for the sanctity of human life, a blind hatred of people of other faiths, and a cold commitment to carrying out his vision of violence in our community."<h2>FBI had previously warned Mohamud's family</h2>Rosen said Mohamud is believed to be an American citizen who was born in the United States. The criminal complaint identifies Somalia as the homeland of his parents. According to Rosen, the FBI had previously attempted to intervene after authorities were alerted in 2025 to Mohamud's alleged sharing of extremist material online. Federal agents went to his home in an effort to speak with his parents, but they declined to engage with investigators, Rosen said.&nbsp;"I just would say to parents all over Minnesota, for that matter, all over America: If you get the indication, especially if you hear from federal law enforcement that your son or daughter is being radicalised to the point where federal law enforcement wants to come and give you that warning, those are warnings that ought to be heeded," Rosen said. The allegations are contained in newly unsealed court records, and the charges against Mohamud remain allegations unless and until proven in court.
