While mammoths were known to eat grasses, mastodons were believed to consume twigs, leaves, and other parts of trees and shrubs using their large teeth to crush them.

According to the museum officials, this was the first complete mastodon jaw unearthed in New York over the last 11 years. Over 150 fossils of the extinct species have been found in the state, a third of them being discovered in Orange County, similar to the recent one.

The newly found jaw of the animal provides “a unique opportunity to study the ecology of this magnificent species, which will enhance our understanding of the Ice Age ecosystems from this region,” said Feranec.

Researchers are hoping to carbon-date and analyse the fossil to determine how old was the mastodon. They will also be working to discover the animal’s diet and habitat. The fossil remains are expected to be put on public display sometime next year, according to the museum.

A palaeontologist with the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Professor Michael Pittman said that the fossil's discovery was an exciting moment for the city.

“Hong Kong is famous for being a built-up landscape, but half of it is a country park. In the countryside areas, most of what you see are dinosaur-era rocks, but it’s volcanic rocks – and they are bad places to find fossils because fossils just melt. But Port Island is one of the islands that has dinosaur-age rocks of the right type and right environment," he said.

“I’m hoping that looking at these fossils, we’ll see differences with ones from some of the famous sites in China like Sichuan and Yunnan. It could tell a really interesting story about the biogeography of the animals," Pittman added.

First-ever dinosaur fossil unearthed in Hong Kong: Report

An archaeological excavation has left the people on the Mediterranean island of Cyprus stunned after the officials unearthed a 4000-year-old temple which featured a mysterious monolith and had the skeleton of a young woman, who was said to have been brutally murdered.

A team of Italian researchers made the historic discoveries in the Bronze Age&nbsp;settlement. Archaeologist Luca Bombardieri, who had worked on the site for 15 years, led the excavation.

Bombardieri was leading the research project which was carried out by the University of Siena, Italy, in collaboration with the Department of Antiquities of Cyprus. He was able to find the remains of the sacred temple at the archaeological site of Erimi, which is located in south-central Cyprus.

"During the Middle Bronze Age (around 2000-1600 BC) a community of artisans chose to settle on the Erimi hill and build a community living space with very particular characteristics," said Bombardieri, in a University of Siena press release.

Bombardieri and his team found a very smooth monolith, which was more than seven&nbsp;feet in height, inside a room. There was also a motif at the centre of the monolith.

"The monolith, which originally stood in the centre of the room, collapsed onto the floor and destroyed a large amphora placed at its feet in front of a small circular hearth," said Bombardieri, in the statement.

"The peculiarities of this [room]... indicate that it is a small sacred space. The activity that supported the community economically, also involved its members ideologically and symbolically," he added.

He said that this small room was the "oldest sacred space ever found on the island". The people in the Bronze Age are likely to have illuminated the monolith "day and night".

Archaeologists have discovered the oldest known wooden structure made by the hands of a human ancestor, and it is nearly 500,000 years old. The researchers were working near Zambia’s Kalambo Falls when they stumbled upon the simple wooden structure which they said suggests people who made it were cognitively sophisticated.&nbsp;

The study about the discovery was published on Wednesday (September 20) in the journal Nature which details the wooden objects that the researchers unearthed.&nbsp;

The wooden structure found is made up of two interlocking logs of a large-fruited willow tree with a notch deliberately crafted into the upper piece to allow them to fit together at right angles around 476,000 years ago, said the researchers.&nbsp;

The oldest wooden structure, before the announcement out of Zambia, was just 9,000 years old. Meanwhile, the oldest known wooden artefact which was discovered in Israel, is said to be a 780,000-year-old fragment of plank.

The latest discovery was made at Kalambo Falls, on Lake Tanganyika in northern Zambia near the border with Tanzania, a site which has been investigated by scientists since the 1950s.&nbsp;

Scientists have also noted in the study that the interlocking logs have “no known parallels” in the African or Eurasian Palaeolithic.” The recent discovery also pushes back the dates of the earliest examples of woodworking predating the emergence of our own species, Homo sapiens.&nbsp;

The earliest evidence of Homo sapiens is from around 300,000 years ago. The discovery has “changed how I thought about these people,” Barham told AFP, adding that they “transformed their surroundings to make life easier, even if it was only by making a platform to sit on by the river to do their daily chores.”&nbsp;

He added, “They used their intelligence, imagination and skills to create something they'd never seen before, something that had never previously existed.” This also suggests an abstract level of thinking and “probably language,” said Barham.

"The area turned out to be empty following the excavation. Rocky veins 1.7 metres (six feet) below ground could explain the radar echoes recorded at the spot," the prefecture in the Correze department said.

In July, local authorities had said that a potential "mass grave" was identified near Meymac in Correze after a 98-year-old former Resistance fighter went public with claims of the killings.&nbsp;

In the 1960s, 11 bodies had been recovered. It was believed that the group of prisoners had 46 Germans and a Frenchwoman who was suspected to be collaborating with them.

Former fighter Edmond Reveil told AFP that the small Resistance group, with only around 30 members, had to kill the Germans because it did not have the means to keep them prisoner.

"If we had let the Germans go, they would have destroyed Meymac," he said.

The most recent search of the wooded area had yielded some World War 2-era relics. These included 20 bullets and cartridge casings from pre-1944 French, German, American and Swiss weapons, in addition to five pre-1943 coins.

"These elements confirm the presence of a group of Resistance fighters at this spot in 1944," the prefecture said.

Nevertheless, "searches around where these objects were found did not allow identification of any human remains," it added.

The Franco-German combined effort at the dig has been called off. However, the prefecture has said that a further analysis by ground-penetrating radar with the help of topographical data as well as historical documents. It added that any new information can prompt further digs.

France's National Office for Former Fighters and War Victims (ONACVG) led this month's search, in cooperation with Germany's VDK war graves authority.

A sword, made of bronze and estimated to be more than 3,000 years old, was unearthed in southern Germany in such a well-preserved state that it “almost still shines”, officials said. 
 
The Bavarian state office for the preservation of historical monuments (BLfD) stated that the newly-discovered sword, which is estimated to date back to the end of the 14th century BC, which is the middle phase of the bronze age, was discovered during excavations being conducted in Nordlingen, between Nuremberg and Stuttgart, last week. 
 
There is an octagonal hilt on the sword and it was found in a grave in which three people were buried in quick succession - a man, a woman and a boy - with bronze objects, stated the BLfD this week. The archaeologists are still not clear if the three people were related to each other or not, or if so how.

<h2>'A very rare find'</h2>

Head of the BLfD Prof Mathias Pfeil said: “The sword and the burial still need to be examined so that our archaeologists can categorise this find more precisely. But we can already say that the state of preservation is extraordinary. A find like this is very rare.” 
 
“It is unusual to find swords from the period, but they have emerged from burial mounds that were opened in the 19th century or as individual finds,” the BLfD stated. 
 
According to the translation of the statement release, the excavated item represents the bronze full-hilt swords (octagonal sword type) in which bronze has been used to make the entire octagonal hilt. 
 
As per a report published by LiveScience, archaeologists emphasised that the sword, which has been estimated to belong to the 14th century BC, is a rare find as discoveries made from this era and region are rare since people have looted many Middle Bronze Age graves over the millennia.

According to archaeologists, such octagonal swords can only be made by skilled smiths. There are two rivets over the handle which were cast over the blade using a technique known as overlay casting. 
 
“However, the blade doesn't have any visible cut marks or signs of wear, suggesting that it had a ceremonial or symbolic purpose,” as per the statement released. 
 
The experts have suggested that the sword must have easily served as an active weapon since the centre of gravity on the front end of the blade suggests that it could have slashed opponents effectively.

There is an octagonal hilt on the sword and it was found in a grave in which three people were buried in quick succession - a man, a woman and a boy - with bronze objects, stated the BLfD this week. The archaeologists are still not clear if the three people were related to each other or not, or if so how. There are two rivets over the handle which were cast over the blade using a technique known as overlay casting. “However, the blade doesn't have any visible cut marks or signs of wear, suggesting that it had a ceremonial or symbolic purpose,” as per the statement released. The experts have suggested that the sword must have easily served as an active weapon since the centre of gravity on the front end of the blade suggests that it could have slashed opponents effectively. The “incredibly rare” discovery was excavated at The Liberty of Southwark development site, which is located a stone's throw from London Bridge station and Borough Market, revealed the Museum of London Archaeology (MOLA).&nbsp;

The tomb's excavation follows the discovery of some of the Roman mosaics, the largest ones found in London in more than 50 years, in February last year on the same site. The discovery includes interior floors and walls. A striking mosaic is placed at the centre and is surrounded by a raised platform, which was used to place the burials. The archaeologists also discovered the lowest entrance steps that have&nbsp;survived to date.&nbsp;

The interior's level of preservation makes this Roman mausoleum the most intact which has been discovered to date in Britain, as per the MOLA. The archaeological investigations were led by the MOLA on behalf of the site's owner Landsec and Transport for London (TfL) and Southwark Council.

The officials have planned a public display of the mausoleum in future after significant modifications. A second mosaic discovered just beneath the first indicates that it was raised during its lifetime. The two mosaics discovered are similar in design with concentric circles surrounding the central flower.

Speaking about the discovery, MOLA senior archaeologist Antonietta Lerz said, “This relatively small site in Southwark is a microcosm for the changing fortunes of Roman London – from the early phase of the site where London expands and the area has lavishly decorated Roman buildings, all the way through to the later Roman period when the settlement shrinks and it becomes a more quiet space where people remember their dead."

“It provides a fascinating window into the living conditions and lifestyle of this part of the city in the Roman period," she added.&nbsp;

'Incredibly rare' Roman tomb excavated near London Bridge station

Archaeologists at Pompeii on Tuesday found&nbsp;two new skeletons of male victims who possibly perished during the earthquake that accompanied mega eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79. The devastating volcanic eruption buried the Italian city in ash. It is being estimated that the two males were aged 55 when alive. The skeletons were found in recent excavations at Pompeii's "Chaste Lovers" block of buildings.

Experts say that these men were killed after a wall in the room they were taking shelter in collapsed as a result of the earthquake. One of the skeletons had an arm raised as if in defence.&nbsp;

The earthquake struck after huge blast from Mount Vesuvius caused the city of Pompeii to be covered with volcanic ash. This preserved the bodies of many of its residents.&nbsp;

Till now, the remains of more than 1000 people have been uncovered throughout the site.

The two newly discovered victims "probably died due to multiple traumas caused by the collapse of part of the building", the Pompeii archaeological park said in a statement on Tuesday.&nbsp;

They were found in what is believed to be a storeroom inside the "Chaste Lovers" block, where colourful frescoes and skeletons of mules who worked the millstones for grain have been uncovered in the past.

One of the skeletons wore a ring on his left hand. The skeletons were found lying on their side with legs curled up.

Archaeologists estimate that 15 to 20 per cent of Pompeii's population died in the eruption, mostly from thermal shock as a giant cloud of gases and ash covered the city.

As documented in letters by Roman author Pliny the Younger, earthquakes before and after the eruption also took their toll.

"Among the causes of death, the collapse of buildings, in some cases due to earthquakes that accompanied the eruption, proved to be lethal," the statement said.&nbsp;

Pompeii's director, Gabriel Zuchtriegel, said modern technology was helping archaeologists "better understand the hell that completely destroyed the city of Pompeii in two days, killing many inhabitants: children, women and men".

Traces of what is believed to be a cloth bundle were found next to one of the victims, containing necklace beads and coins.&nbsp;

Inside the room was an amphora and a collection of bowls and jugs, while an adjacent room contained a home shrine in the form of a fresco, and a narrow bathroom with a toilet.&nbsp;

In the room where the men were found, part of a wall had collapsed, hitting one of the victims "whose raised arm perhaps refers to the tragic image of a vain attempt to protect himself from falling masonry", the park said.

Potemkin's memory is important to those in Russia who want to restore the country's former imperial power because of his crucial part in the conquest of Crimea from the Turks in 1783. Putin heavily relied on his legacy to support the 2014 annexation of Crimea.

Saldo reported that memorials commemorating naval commanders Fyodor Ushakov, Alexander Suvorov, and Vasily Margelov were also taken out of the chapel and placed somewhere secret. He said that the artefacts will be returned once the city was safe.

After receiving the title of field marshal, he established the city of Sevastopol in the Crimea, which is now the principal Russian naval station on the Black Sea. The newly constructed Black Sea fleet under Potemkin was crucial to Russia's victory in the second Turkish war of 1768–1774.

The bones needed to be carbon-dated in order to determine the exact age of the skeleton, she said.

Once the painstaking process of cleaning and preserving the fragile skeleton is complete it will be exhibited.

Scientists hope the skeleton will provide more information to aid research into Bryde's whale populations existing today as well as the geological conditions at the time.

Bryde's whales, sometimes known as tropical whales for their preference for warmer waters, are found in coastal waters in parts of the Indian, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, including in the Gulf of Thailand.

Israeli archaeologists on Sunday unveiled the&nbsp;remains&nbsp;of a&nbsp;5,000-year-old&nbsp;city&nbsp;they said was among the biggest from its era in the region, including fortifications, a ritual temple and a cemetery.

"We have here an immense urban construction, planned with streets that separate neighbourhoods and public spaces," Yitzhak Paz of the&nbsp;Israel&nbsp;Antiquities Authority told AFP at the site near the Mediterranean in the country's centre.

He called it a major discovery in the region from the Bronze Age.

The archaeological site, known as En Esur "is the largest site and the most important from that era" in the region, said Itai Elad, another archaeologist overseeing the excavation.

"It is 0.65 square kilometres, meaning double of what we know", said Elad.

A ritual temple was found within the ancient&nbsp;city&nbsp;along with rare figurines with human and animal faeces, they said.

It also included burnt animal bones in a stone basin that they called proof of sacrificial offerings.

The excavation allowed for an older settlement from some 7,000 years ago from the Chalcolithic period to be uncovered as well, though smaller than the other discovery.

Paz said the ancient&nbsp;city&nbsp;was the "first steps in the process of urbanisation" in what was Canaan at the time.

Dina Shalem, another of the archaeologists, noted it included fortifications some 20 metres long and two metres high as well as a cemetery.

Around four million fragments were found at the site, including pieces of pottery, flint tools and vases of stone and basalt, said Elad.

Some of the tools came from Egypt, the archaeologists said.

The excavations carried out over the course of two and a half years included the participation of 5,000 teenagers and volunteers. The dig preceded the construction of a road in the area, a project whose plans were modified to preserve the site.
