<p>The EMA's Pharmacovigilance Risk Assessment Committee (PRAC), which has been carrying out the review, will look into if other treatments in the same broader category of medicines, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists also require assessment.<br />

However, initially, it will only look into the risks of using weight-loss medication which contains either liraglutide or semaglutide.<br />

"The review is being carried out in the context of a signal procedure raised by the Icelandic Medicines Agency, following three case reports. A signal is an information on a new or known adverse event that is potentially caused by a medicine and that warrants further investigation,” an EMA official said.<br />

"The case reports included two cases of suicidal thoughts - one following the use of Saxenda and one after Ozempic. One additional case reported thoughts of self-injury with Saxenda. The EMA will communicate further when more information becomes available,” he added.</p>

<p>Such types of treatment have been in great demand in the market because they have been popularised by social media that talk about people, often celebrities, losing large amounts of weight.<br />

Saxenda and Wegovy have received approval and are licensed for weight loss. Wegovy is still not available in the UK market, however, the prime minister has said GPs may soon start giving it to some patients in England.<br />

Call your healthcare provider right away if you have any mental changes that are new, worse, or worry you."</p>

<p>Biden will also be meeting King Charles at Windsor Castle for the first time since his coronation. The two leaders are expected to talk about the climate crisis and how the problem can be solved with financial initiatives.<br />

Biden will reach Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, on Tuesday and will spend two days here and take part in the NATO summit. He will hold meetings with leaders and deliver a speech at Vilnius University.<br />

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the summit “will send a clear message: NATO&nbsp;stands united and Russia’s aggression will not pay”. There have also been disagreements over when Ukraine must be sent an invitation to join NATO.</p>

US senator Thom Tillis, who will be leading a bipartisan delegation in the summit, said, “At the end of the day, you know you’re family. It’s the strongest military alliance in our history and I think it only has gotten stronger as a result of US leadership, as the result of Stoltenberg’s leadership and as a result of the threat from (Russia’s President) Vladimir Putin to all of the NATO&nbsp;allies and other countries in Europe and around the world and to the international order.”<br />
<br />
Biden will then head to Helsinki to welcome Finland, which became the 31st member of NATO in April, putting an end to its history of non-alignment and showing how the Russia-Ukraine war has backfired in Europe.</p>

This comes as Norway recently approved three offshore oilfields and new oil and gas projects worth nearly $19 billion.</p>

<p>The two environmental groups have sought a court injunction against the government, calling for an immediate halt to the ongoing development of three Norwegian offshore oilfields – Equinor’s Breidablikk and Aker BP’s Yggdrasil and Tyrving fields.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The groups have based their arguments on the Norwegian constitution and its international human rights commitments. In a joint statement, the environmental groups said, “Their recent approvals violate the Norwegian constitution and Norway’s international human rights commitments, as well as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.”</p>

<p>This also comes after the groups previously lost a similar lawsuit, back in 2020, which objected to the planned development of new oil fields approved by the government. Both Greenpeace and Nature and Youth have long sought the court’s intervention against Norway’s oil and gas production.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The recent lawsuit also comes a day after the country’s petroleum and energy ministry green-lit another 19 oil and gas fields worth more than 200 billion Norwegian crowns ($18.5 billion).&nbsp;</p>

<p>The two groups have argued that the government has failed to assess the global impact of the three oil fields – Yggdrasil, Tyrving and Breidablikk – and alleged that they were “either non-existent or highly inadequate, rendering the approvals invalid.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>They added, “The organisations demand that the development cease until the court has assessed the legal basis.”</p>

<p>In a statement, the head of Greenpeace Norway, Frode Pleym, said that the “Norwegian government is hellbent on opening new oil fields that will produce fossil fuels decades into the future.” He added, “It is blatantly disregarding the climate, the science, and even our own Supreme Court in its effort to please the oil industry.”<br />
<br />
Notably, Norway is western Europe’s largest oil-producing nation as well as the biggest supplier of natural gas to the continent. The government has also previously argued that its petroleum resources are vital to Europe’s energy security.</p>

<h2><strong>How has the government responded?</strong></h2>

<p>In a statement to Reuters, State Secretary and Energy Minister, Andreas Bjelland Eriksen said that while they are confident that the approval of the recent projects has not violated the law, “Still, it’s the right of environmental organisations to try this before the court.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>In the context of violations of rights and the law, Eriksen also said, “The government is respecting its commitments in the Paris (climate) treaty,” as quoted by news agency AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added, “At the same time, we need to contribute to energy security during the transition...The authorisations we have granted ensure that Europe will continue to have access to energy in the future as well.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>After a month-long journey through space, Euclid will join its fellow space telescope James Webb at a stable hovering spot around 1.5 million kilometres (more than 930,000 miles) from Earth called the second Lagrangian Point.</p>

<p>From there, Euclid will chart the largest-ever map of the universe, encompassing up to two billion galaxies across more than a third of the sky.</p>

<p>By capturing light that has taken 10 billion years to reach Earth, the map will also offer a new view of the 13.8-billion-year-old universe's history.</p>

<p>Scientists hope to use this information to address what the Euclid project manager Giuseppe Racca calls a "cosmic embarrassment": that 95 percent of the universe remains unknown to humanity.</p>

<p>Around 70 percent is thought to be dark energy, the name given to the unknown force that is causing the universe to expand at an accelerated rate.</p>

<p>And 25 percent is dark matter, thought to bind the universe together and make up around 80 percent of its mass.</p>

<p>'Dark detective'</p>

<p>Euclid consortium member Guadalupe Canas told a press conference that the two-tonne space telescope was a "dark detective" which can reveal more about both elements.</p>

<p>Its visible light camera will let it measure the shape of galaxies, while its near infrared spectrometer and photometer will allow it to measure how far away they are.</p>

<p>So how will Euclid try to spot things that cannot be seen? By searching for their absence.</p>

<p>The light coming from billions of light years away is slightly distorted by the mass of visible and dark matter along the way, a phenomenon known as weak gravitational lensing.</p>

<p>"By subtracting the visible matter, we can calculate the presence of the dark matter which is in between," Racca told AFP.</p>

<p>While this may not reveal the true nature of dark matter, scientists hope it will throw up new clues that will help track it down in the future.</p>

<p>For dark energy, French astrophysicist David Elbaz compared the expansion of the universe to blowing up a balloon with lines drawn on it.</p>

<p>By "seeing how fast it inflates," scientists hope to measure the breath -- or dark energy -- making it expand.</p>

<p>'Goldmine'</p>

<p>A major difference between Euclid and other space telescopes is its wide field of view, which takes in an area equivalent to two full moons.</p>

<p>Project scientist Rene Laureijs said that this wider view means Euclid will be able to "surf the sky and find exotic objects" like black holes that the Webb telescope can then investigate in greater detail.</p>

<p>Beyond dark energy and matter, Euclid's map of the universe is expected to be a "goldmine for the whole field of astronomy," said Yannick Mellier, head of the Euclid consortium.</p>

<p>Scientists hope that Euclid's data will help them learn more about the evolution of galaxies, black holes and more.</p>

<p>The first images are expected once scientific operations start in October, with major data releases planned for 2025, 2027 and 2030.</p>

<p>The 1.4-billion-euro ($1.5-billion) mission is intended to run until 2029, but could last a little longer if all goes well.</p>

<p>The launch comes as Europe finds itself with few ways to independently send its missions into space, due to Russia ending cooperation last year and long delays to the next-generation Ariane 6 rocket.</p>

<p>Ironically, this national park in the Nordic nation is home to Nokia, a brand which became a household name for making the best-selling smartphone of all time in the world.</p>

<p>Ulko-Tammio, which is one of the 41 national parks of Finland, is home to many people and also rare birds and plants, which can be spotted easily by visitors while on a hike along the nature trails of the island or from the bird tower of the island.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, tourists can voluntarily participate in the digital detox while in Ulko-Tammio, since a functioning mobile network is present on the island and hence, the temptation will remain ever-present.</p>

<p>However, the staff members associated with Parks &amp; Wildlife Finland, the company which manages the island, have expressed hope that the campaign inspires tourists to unplug and engage with the flora and fauna.</p>

<p>Ahead of World Refugee Day dozens of multinational companies have vowed to hire refugees from across Europe including more than 13,000 refugees from Ukraine over the next three years, on Monday (June 18). The pledge was made at a business summit in Paris organised by the Tent Partnership for Refugees, a global business coalition of over 300 companies.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Employment for refugees in Europe</strong></h2>

<p>A day before World Refugee Day, 41 companies including Amazon, Marriott, Accenture, Amazon, Starbucks, Microsoft and so on, have said they would hire, connect to work or train a total of 250,000 refugees out of which 13,680 would be getting jobs directly in those companies.</p>

<p>The pledges made on Monday amount to the single largest batch of commitments made in the history of the Tent Partnership for Refugees since it was founded back in 2016, reported CNN. &nbsp;</p>

<p>Kelly Clements, United Nations deputy high commissioner for refugees, on Monday said, “Every number is a story of an individual family who left everything, seeking safety, seeking protection and wanting to be able to rebuild as quickly as possible.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>She added, “So the commitments that businesses are going to make on Monday are absolutely essential.” According to the UN official, 110 million people have been displaced across the world out of which an estimated 12 million are from Ukraine and more than half of them live in Europe.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The event in Paris was organised by Tent Partnership for Refugees which is a nonprofit founded by Chobani CEO Hamdi Ulukaya which connects businesses and refugees. Notably, the group’s first summit was held last year in the United States and witnessed pledges to hire 22,725 refugees.</p>

<h2><strong>Which companies have joined the pledge?</strong></h2>

<p>The biggest pledge, on Monday, was made by Amazon which has vowed to hire at least 5,000 refugees in Europe over the next three years. This would be followed by Marriott and Hilton with 1,500 each, Starbucks and ISS with 1,000 each, reported the Associated Press. Meanwhile, brands like Adidas, L’Oreal, PepsiCo, Hyatt, and so on have made smaller commitments.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“This is good for us as a company because the opportunity to add diversity to our workforce will continue to make us a stronger company,” said Amazon Vice President overseeing human resources, Ofori Agboka, as quoted by AP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He added that many of these jobs would be hourly roles at fulfilment and storage centres and in transport and delivery. This comes after the company announced mass layoffs and fired thousands of employees late last year. However, Agboka said that the job cuts primarily affected salaried office jobs.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Similarly, Marriott also said their jobs will predominantly be hourly positions like housekeepers, kitchen staff and front desk attendants. Marriott International CEO Anthony Capuano said, “We’re seeing record levels of demand for our properties across many markets here in Europe,” adding that the company is “hiring aggressively” to meet the rising demand, reported AP.<br />

<p>Currently, there is no common law addressing the issue of forced sterilisation of women with disabilities, said Euronews. This has meant that the onus of addressing the issue is on individual countries. And many of them do not have a law in place to make the practice illegal.</p>

<p>Even in Spain, such forced sterilisation was legal till only two years ago.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Euronews reported the case of Rosario, a Spanish woman who was forcibly sterilised by her parents. Rosario has 67 per cent intellectual disability. This means that she is able to be independent and work. Rosario met Antonio, who has a similar intellectual disability. Both fell in love.</p>

<p>When Rosario expressed to her parents that she wished to be a mother, she was met with stiff resistance. Her parents were reportedly not convinced that Rosario was capable of raising a child. Her parents decided to sterilise her after advice from a doctor. As they forced Rosario to undergo the procedure, her mother warned her that if she did not undergo the procedure, she will not be allowed to meet Antonio.</p>

<p>Rosario saw scars on her body a day after the procedure.</p>

<p>"I asked myself: 'What have they done with my life? Am I useless? Can everyone be a mother except me? Since then, I feel empty every day of my life," she told Euronews.</p>

<p>She said what 'little affection' she had for her parents died with the incident.</p>

<p>"I don't have a conversation like father and daughter. I don't trust anyone anymore, nor do I want to," she was quoted as saying.</p>

<h2><strong>The European situation</strong></h2>

<p>The practice remains legal in many countries of the European Union. Portugal, Hungary and the Czech Republic are the three countries that allow the sterilisation of even minors. The situation persists in spite of the practice violating the Istanbul Convention and the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.</p>

<p>Only Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, &nbsp;Sweden, Ireland, Slovenia, Poland and Spain criminalise the practice. Spain is the latest country to do so.</p>

<p>But Euronews reported that forced sterilisation takes place in these countries even when the practice is outlawed.</p>

<p>A climate report on Monday claimed that Europe needs to brace itself for more deadly heatwaves which are led by climate change, emphasising that it has emerged as the fastest-warming continent of the world, with its temperature rising by 2.3 degree&nbsp;Celsius last year compared to that in pre-industrial times.</p>

<p>The report, prepared by the World Meteorological Organisation and the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service, said that the increasing temperature will lead to record sea-surface temperatures, unprecedented glacier melt and crop-withering drought.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Since the 1980s, Europe has been warming twice the global average and witnessed its warmest summer on record last year as countries like France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and the United Kingdom faced their warmest year on record.</p>

<p>Since the mid-1800s, the world has warmed at an average of around 1.2C, leading to a devastating cascade of extreme weather, which includes more severe droughts in a few areas, more intense heatwaves and storms which will be made more ferocious by rising seas.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Vulnerable people, poorest countries hardest hit</strong></h2>

<p>The most vulnerable people and the poorest countries of the world will be the hardest hit, who have not taken enough steps to contribute to the fossil fuel emissions that increase temperatures. However, the impact of climate change has been becoming increasingly severe across the world, as rapid warming can be witnessed in regions in the northern hemisphere and around the poles.</p>

<p>The high temperatures in Europe "exacerbated the severe and widespread drought conditions, fuelled violent wildfires that resulted in the second largest burnt area on record, and led to thousands of heat-associated excess deaths," stated WMO Secretary-General Petteri Taalas.</p>

<p>Across the continent, temperatures rose 1.5C in 30 years from 1991 to 2021, as per the report of The State of the Climate in Europe 2022. The report stated that last year severe heat killed more than 16,000 people, while damages caused by floods and storms accounted for $2 billion.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Unfortunately, this cannot be considered a one-off occurrence or an oddity of the climate," stated Copernicus Director Carlo Buontempo in the report.</p>

<p>"Our current understanding of the climate system and its evolution informs us that these kinds of events are part of a pattern that will make heat stress extremes more frequent and more intense across the region," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Solar and wind tend to complement each other throughout the year: solar radiation is higher in late spring and summer while wind intensity is usually higher in winter," the report stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While there has been no significant trend in wind or rain patterns in Europe over the last 30 years, the report said there was a marked increase in sunlight, with 2022 seeing the highest amount of solar radiation since recordkeeping&nbsp;began in 1983.&nbsp;</p>
