Coronavirus kills over 5,000 in Europe; number likely to increase overnight

As the novel coronavirus COVID-19 continues to infect hundreds daily, people have begun hoarding groceries and other goods to be prepared for a lockdown if the number of cases continue to escalate.

One of these items is none other than the mighty toilet paper. While the shortage of toilet paper caused panic in Australia and the United States, one European country claims to have enough stock to last them ten years.

The Netherlands doesn’t have to worry about the disrupted supply chain of goods across the globe. The country’s Prime Minister Mark Rutte yesterday claimed that toilet paper has started to resurface on store shelves a week after people finished the stock when the majorly infected parts of the world went into panic buying mode.

The COVID-19 pandemic has crippled the whole world and poses a risk to not only groceries, but medical and food supplies, especially with people hoarding in bulk. The World Health Organization (WHO) recently labelled the outbreak as a pandemic. As part of the precautionary measures, people across the globe have been advised to stay indoors and to practice social distancing. The pandemic has shut down major countries and industries around the world. Italy continues to be in complete lockdown mode, with over 300 deaths being reported daily. This may partly be due to the large number of senior citizens in the country. Additionally, schools, restaurants, and bars have been ordered shut across the globe. Sporting events have also been cancelled until the virus threat simmers down. The US state of California recently enforced a complete lockdown which places over 40 million people in self-isolation. A study recently published in the International Journal of Antimicrobial Agents claims that the combination of a popular anti-malaria drug, with the trade name “Plaqenuil” and the antibiotic “Azithromycin” could facilitate the treatment of COVID-19 by reducing the duration of the virus.

The sample of the study included 30 people who had tested positive for coronavirus. All of these people were given either just the anti-malaria drug, or a combination with the antibiotic, or neither.

Earlier, Chinese authorities and doctors were successful in shortening the duration of the infection by using the combination mentioned above.

Out of the sample size of 30, six displayed no symptoms, while 22 had evident symptoms in the upper respiratory tract (sneezing, headaches, and sore throat). Additionally, eight also displayed lower respiratory tract symptoms, which includes mostly coughing.

Out of the 30 people, the anti-malaria drug was effective as a mode of treatment on its own, while it was more effective with the antibiotic.

As reported by TechCrunch, similar tests were successful in China. As the contagion continues to wreak havoc all over the world, researchers are using treatments that have been employed in treating epidemics and pandemics earlier. They are combining and experimenting with the modes of treatment used in treating Ebola, SARS, HIV, and other global outbreaks.

Delhi's first covid-19 patient recovers successfully, hails medical facilities as 'best'

A study undertaken by Chinese researchers claims that kids who contract COVID-19 might display mild symptoms, recover, but still carry the virus. This implies that kids remain active carriers of coronavirus even if their symptoms have subsided or even if they're simply asymptomatic.

The study was published in Nature Medicine on March 13 and further reaffirmed the need to shut down schools globally in order to limit the contact of infected children with others.

In the United States, local school districts have suspended all classroom activity. This has been replaced by the online model of schooling.

According to this study, shutting down schools is in the best interests of the society for there's no clarity on whether children could pass the virus to others in the community.

The study was led by Huimin Xia, of Guangzhou Women and Children's Medical Center, in Guangzhou, China. All 745 subjects were babies and children.

The age-range stood between two months to 15 years, and the children were selected based on their "close contact with diagnosed [COVID-19] patients or were members of families with reported familial outbreaks".

Out of the 745, only 10 tested positive for the virus and were admitted to a treatment facility, simply with the aim to protect others around them. It's imperative to note here that none of them showed any significant illness.

Additionally, none of the ten kids showed any severe symptoms. Even in the seven cases that developed fever, nobody exhibited a temperature of over 29 degrees Celsius.

"There were some instances of coughing, sore throat and nasal congestion," the journal news release noted, but "none of the other symptoms commonly seen in adult patients, such as muscle ache and headache."

Further tests like x-rays displayed no signs of pneumonia among the children.

However, children with mild symptoms or no symptoms may still be able to transfer the virus to vulnerable adults.

The worst part is that the kids may sustain the virus for way longer than expected, which makes them a harmful carrier group, especially towards the susceptible groups of populations.

This was ascertained by the researchers based on the swab results of the kids, which had come out negative. However, their stool still tested positive for the virus, suggesting that a minimal amount of virus might be able to sustain itself for longer inside children.

A peculiar case involved a child's stool testing positive 13 days after they were discharged from the hospital. The kid had tested negative for throat/nose swabs twice.

This brings into question the protocols in place for isolation. Most institutions suggest 14 days of the quarantine period.

"Quarantine timings are currently assessed through the use of nose or throat swabs; however, these results suggest that gastrointestinal-tract testing may help to provide more accurate assessments of treatment effectiveness and recovery", the news release said.

"It's important to understand that viral shedding [in stool samples] seen in this small study does not equate with the transmission," Glatter said. "While children may still shed virus in their stool, we don't know whether they may still be infectious and serve as a reservoir of ongoing transmission."

Still, "the report suggests that rectal swab testing may be a more sensitive indicator compared to nasal sampling regarding the effectiveness of treatment and when to end quarantine," Glatter added.

Authorities around the world have claimed that COVID-19 coronavirus can be contained by quarantining individuals who show any flu-like symptoms as per the guidelines given by the World Health Organization (WHO).

However, new patterns of infections suggest that dormant carriers of the infection, i.e., people who may be carrying the infection but do not show symptoms could be the primary contact points among people who find themselves infected or develop symptoms.

The symptoms in question include fever, cough, and difficulty breathing. This made the job of healthcare officials easier, for it implied isolating people with symptoms. However, with this new development, it becomes harder to trace who may be carrying the virus and to whom it may have spread.

In the US state of Massachusetts, at least 82 people who tested positive came from sources who were not displaying any symptoms. Almost six studies suggest that people without symptoms are causing substantial amounts of infection, as first reported by CNN.

Over the last few weeks since the virus spread from Wuhan, China - the pilot epicentre of COVID-19, officials in the US have warned that transmission not involving symptoms is possible. However, they attributed only a small number of cases to such form of transmission.

In conversation with American network ABC, US Secretary of Health and Human Services, Alex Azar claimed that asymptomatic spread is ''not the major driver'' of the pandemic.

"You really need to just focus on the individuals that are symptomatic," he said. "It [the containment strategy] really does depend on the symptomatic presentation", he added.

The sentiment was also echoed by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

"Some spread might be possible before people show symptoms; there have been reports of this occurring with this new coronavirus, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads," claims the CDC website.

However, the US administration's coronavirus response coordinator, Dr Deborah Birx had something else to say. Many people below 20 are not displaying symptoms.

"Until you really understand how many people are asymptomatic and asymptomatically passing the virus on, we think it's better for the entire American public to know that the risk of serious illness may be low, but they could be potentially spreading the virus to others... That's why we're asking every American to take personal responsibility to prevent that spread", she asserted.

Experts all over the world are now attempting to understand the role played by asymptomatic carriers of the infection, and whether they're the primary carriers of the same.

Bill Gates, the co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, recently expressed fear over the spread of the virus through people who don't develop symptoms but only come off as a bit sick.

"There is also strong evidence that it can be transmitted by people who are just mildly ill or even presymptomatic. That means COVID-19 will be much harder to contain than the Middle East respiratory syndrome or severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which were spread much less efficiently and only by symptomatic people," Gates said.

Throughout the world, there are a significant number of cases involving transmission by people who display only mild symptoms.

Recently, Dr Sandra Ciesek, the director of the Institute of Medical Virology in Frankfurt, Germany conducted coronavirus tests on 24 passengers who had flown in from Israel. Out of these, seven tested positive. However, four of these had no symptoms yet carried a higher viral load than the people who indeed displayed symptoms, reported CNN.

Viral load refers to the concentration of the virus in someone's respiratory secretions. The higher the load, the higher the chances are of that person transmitting the infection to others.

COVID-19: Indian economy can suffer a loss of Rs 21 lakh crore

The world health organisation has now categorised the novel coronavirus as a pandemic. The Covid-19 virus was till now categorised as an epidemic.

While the WHO chief, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that the change of categorisation doesn't change the body's assessment of the threat posed by the virus, WION will explain to you what is the difference between an epidemic and a pandemic. And how it could change the way the world tackles the deadly virus.

The differences between an epidemic and pandemic is based on the geographic area and the number of people under its influence.

What is a epidemic?

Simply put, when any disease spreads in a region and infects its residents it is categorised as an epidemic.

The world health organisation defines an epidemic as — the occurrence in a community or region of cases of illness. Clearly above normal expectancy.

An epidemic is a term used in a regional context.

Going by this definition, the coronavirus outbreak is an epidemic in several nations. Like the worst affected nations of China, Italy and South Korea.

What is a pandemic?

It is an elevation to the epidemic. As per the definition given by ''a dictionary of epidemiology'' which is the standard reference for epidemiologists.

A pandemic is — '' an epidemic occurring worldwide, or over a very wide area, crossing international boundaries and usually affecting a large number of people''.

To put it in perspective ''pandemic'' is a term used in a global sense. When a disease has a worldwide presence.

While a ''pandemic'' sounds much scarier than epidemic it is important to remember that the difference is based on the geographic extent and the number of patients infected.

It's important to keep in mind that in theory categorisation as a pandemic does not talk about the seriousness of diseases.

Practically and with the situation on the ground. An epidemic could be much more deadly than a pandemic.

The coronavirus, even though a pandemic now. Remains a virus with a very less death rate worldwide.

World health organisation director-general has urged people to remain calm and also said that this categorisation should not result in the spread of unreasonable fear.
