On July 14 at Lord’s, England were crowned World Cup 2019 champions after the final ended in a tie and the Super Over that followed, too ended in a tie. The hosts were then declared winners on a superior boundary count.

Neesham was in the middle when his batting partner Martin Guptill was run out by Jos Buttler, resulting in the Super Over ending in a tie. The Kiwis needed 16 to win off the Super Over bowled by Jofra Archer.

'New Zealand is champ': Twitter reacts after James Neesham tells kids not to take up sport

England were mistakenly awarded an extra run during their nailbiting <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/england-defeat-new-zealand-to-win-the-cricket-world-cup-2019-title-235973">World Cup win over New Zealand</a> at Lord's, a member of the sport's chief rules committee told media Monday.

A freak fielding deflection off Ben Stokes' bat that raced to the boundary saw the team awarded six runs with three balls to go in the final over on Sunday.

Scores were tied at the end of regular play and the resulting Super Over shootout, with England then handed their first-ever <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/allah-was-with-us-captain-morgan-hails-diverse-cultures-as-england-win-world-cup-with-rest-of-world-236174">World Cup victory</a> for their superior boundary count.

But former umpire Simon Taufel told Fox Sports Australia that umpires had made a "clear mistake", as the batsmen had not crossed for their second run.

"They should have been awarded five runs, not six," he said, adding that England's Adil Rashid should have faced the second-last ball instead of Stokes as a result.&nbsp;

Taufel, a five-time winner of the International Cricket Council's Umpire of the Year award, now sits on the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) laws sub-committee, the worldwide custodian of cricket's sometimes obscure rules of play.

The Australian defended the match umpires, who he said had to make a complicated judgement, and said it would be "unfair" to say the decision altered the outcome of the tournament.

"Unfortunately that sort of thing happens from time to time. It's a part of the game that we play," Taufel said.

"I don't wish to nitpick, just hope it never happens in such moments ever again."

England, who have often cited a humiliating defeat by New Zealand at the 2015 World Cup as the catalyst for their climb to the top of the one-day international rankings, finally have a World Cup win to go with their three losing appearances in the 1979, 1987 and 1992 finals.

By contrast, defeat is devastating for New Zealand, who were also looking to win the trophy for the first time after being well beaten by Australia in the 2015 showpiece.

News brief: Big stories of the day

England won the World Cup for the first time as they <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-final-england-vs-new-zealand-235710">beat New Zealand</a> in a Super Over after a nerve-shredding final ended in a tie at Lord's on Sunday.

After Eoin Morgan's side finished on 241 all out in pursuit of New Zealand's 241-8, the final came down to a six-ball shootout for each team.

England's Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler took 15 off Trent Boult's over.

Jofra Archer bowled England's over against Martin Guptill and Jimmy Neesham, who smashed a six off the second ball.

With two runs required off the final ball, wicketkeeper Jos Buttler and Jason Roy combined to run out Guptill as he came back for the second.

Both sides finished on 15 so England won due to a tie-break rule because they hit more boundaries.

After defeats in previous finals against Pakistan in 1992, Australia in 1987 and the West Indies in 1979, it was a cathartic moment for English cricket.

Morgan and his team-mates were cheered to the rafters by the ecstatic capacity crowd at Lord's as they joined Bobby Moore's 1966 footballers and Martin Johnson's rugby union team of 2003 as England's World Cup winners.

England's triumph was the culmination of a remarkable rise over the past four years.

Following their dismal first round exit at the 2015 World Cup, England's then director of cricket Andrew Strauss embarked on a root-and-branch reform of their one-day international set-up.

Adopting an aggressive game-plan under Morgan and Australian coach Trevor Bayliss, England's rebuilding plan paid off spectacularly.

They had already climbed to the top of the ODI rankings heading into the tournament and, after plenty of highs and lows over the past six weeks, they eventually justified their tag as the bookmakers' pre-tournament favourites to win the World Cup.

It was not an easy ride for England, whose defeats against Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Australia in the group stage put them on the brink of elimination.

But Morgan's men kept their cool to defeat India and New Zealand and book a last-four spot before crushing Australia in the semi-finals and surviving one final test of their nerve against New Zealand.

Dramatic World Cup final the best game ever, says England hero Ben Stokes

Liam Plunkett took three key wickets as England restricted New Zealand to 241-8 in the <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-final-england-vs-new-zealand-235710">World Cup final</a> at Lord's on Sunday, with both sides desperate to win the tournament for the first time.

Fast bowler Plunkett dismissed New Zealand captain and star batsman Kane Williamson for just 30 before removing established opener Henry Nicholls for an innings-best 55 in a return of 3-42 from his 10 overs.

Chris Woakes followed up with 3-37.

New Zealand, however, successfully defended a total of 239 in their shock semi-final win over India, when they reduced one of the world's strongest batting line-ups to 24-4.

"Sometimes it doesn't feel real, it's nice to be part of this occasion," said Plunkett. "It's a good pitch, we bowled well to restrict them.

"It's nice to know my role. I smash the pitch and use my variations, make the batsmen make mistakes. We would have snapped your hand off to be chasing 240, New Zealand are a good team."

Williamson, as he had done against India, batted first after winning the toss in overcast conditions and on a green pitch.

Nicholls was still on nought when given out lbw to Woakes but successfully reviewed umpire Kumar Dharmasena's decision.

Fellow opener Martin Guptill, the leading run-scorer at the 2015 World Cup, hit fast bowler Jofra Archer for two boundaries in three balls -- an uppercut six over third man followed by a straight drive back over the paceman's head.

Guptill has struggled at this tournament, however, and on 19 he was lbw to Woakes. He reviewed but was walking back to the pavilion even before replays confirmed the ball would have smashed into his middle stump.

Williamson out

It left number three Williamson, who started the match with 548 runs in the tournament at an average of 91.33, having to mount yet another rescue mission.

But after putting on 74 for the second wicket with Nicholls, he fell when he edged a rising cross-seamer from Plunkett to wicketkeeper Jos Buttler.

Dharmasena initially said not out but an England review confirmed the end of Williamson's 53-ball innings, which featured just two fours.

New Zealand found themselves 118-3 when Plunkett struck for the second time in 14 balls.

Nicholls, who had completed a 71-ball fifty, fell for 55 when he played on after being cramped for room by a Plunkett delivery that curved back into him.

New Zealand were now looking to senior batsman Taylor to bail them out of trouble but he could only manage 15 before falling lbw to Wood.&nbsp;

When Jimmy Neesham (19) chipped Plunkett to Joe Root at mid-on, the Black Caps were 173-5 with 11 overs left.

Tom Latham defiantly hit Wood for six but Colin de Grandhomme, who top-edged a hook off Archer into his helmet, took 28 balls for a 16 that finished when he chipped a Woakes slower ball mid-off.&nbsp;

Latham's 47 off 56 balls ended when he chipped a low Woakes full toss to mid-off.

Liam Plunkett took three key wickets as England restricted New Zealand to 241-8 in the World Cup final at Lord's on Sunday, with both sides desperate to win the tournament for the first time. We would have snapped your hand off to be chasing 240, New Zealand are a good team." Williamson, as he had done against India, batted first after winning the toss in overcast conditions and on a green pitch. World Cup final: Players to watch out for in England vs New Zealand clash

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes England's success in their home World Cup may bode ill for Australia's hopes of retaining the Ashes.

England knocked Australia out of the semi-finals with an <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/england-thrash-australia-by-eight-wickets-to-reach-world-cup-final-235127">emphatic eight-wicket win</a> and another over New Zealand in Sunday's final will see the hosts head into next month's five-Test Ashes series with significant momentum.

"It probably does, to be honest," Ponting said, when asked whether England's 50-over success could spill over.

"The country will be on a bit of a wave and a bit of a high, the players will certainly be on a huge high after that World Cup.

"But who knows if they don't (win), it might have an adverse effect on their Ashes campaign as well.

"You can take lots of things from different series.

"It's a completely different series going into an Ashes and there will be quite a few different players in their Test team than will be in this one-day team. They'll have different captains as well.

"But I'm sure if they happen to win the World Cup, they'll take as much as they can from it going into the Ashes."

Australia hold the urn after thrashing England 4-0 on home soil in the 2017-18 Ashes.

The first Ashes Test starts at Edgbaston on August&nbsp;1.

Ponting, hired as an assistant coach to Justin Langer for Australia's World Cup campaign, watched Aaron Finch's side fall to South Africa and England in successive matches to bow out of the tournament after they had been the first side to book their place in the semi-finals.

Injuries did not help Australia's cause and Ponting was not prepared to wear the blame for the side's tactical preparations.

"Tactically, I think we got things right. Personnel-wise, we picked the best team that we could for every game," Ponting told Cricket Australia's website (cricket.com.au).

"Unusually for Australian teams in World Cups, we played our worst cricket in the most critical moments.

"That'll be the thing that gets spoken about the most and see if there's any reason behind it."

England thrash Australia by eight wickets to reach World Cup final

From Chris Gayle to Rashid Khan, players who failed to impress at Cricket World Cup 2019

Sachin Tendulkar may have unwittingly provided New Zealand with extra motivation to cause a huge upset in <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-overcast-clouds-rain-expected-at-manchester-ahead-of-india-vs-new-zealand-semi-final-234185">Tuesday's World Cup semi-final</a> against India when he wished <a href="https://www.wionews.com/photos/a-look-back-at-seven-match-winning-knocks-by-mahendra-singh-dhoni-233604">MS Dhoni</a> happy birthday and "all the very best for the next two games".

The implication of the retired batting great's remarks was that India wicketkeeper Dhoni, who turned 38 on Sunday, and his team-mates already have one foot in the July 14 final against England or Australia at Lord's.

India, whose group match against 2015 runners-up New Zealand was washed out, have suffered just one defeat at this World Cup so far, against England, and topped the 10-team group table.

Opener Rohit Sharma became the first batsman to score five centuries in a single World Cup when he made 103 in a seven-wicket win over Sri Lanka on Saturday, while fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah has been the spearhead of a well-balanced bowling attack.

India captain Virat Kohli said Monday the pressure of being overwhelming favourites was nothing new for a squad who have long shouldered the hopes of a nation of more than a billion.

And he suggested that might give them an edge over the Black Caps at Old Trafford.

"The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-world-cup-semi-final-india-vs-new-zealand-head-to-head-records-234123">Indian team</a> always carries a lot of expectation and pressure whenever we play," Kohli told reporters.

"We are quite used to that over the years. We are better equipped to react in these situations because we know what these kind of games and our fan base and the expectations bring," added Kohli.

But if New Zealand, who could recall spinner Ish Sodhi to an attack featuring left-arm quick Trent Boult and fit-again fast bowler Lockie Ferguson - can find a way through India's top three, they could expose a long tail.

The Black Caps, who only qualified for the semi-finals in fourth place on the basis of net run-rate, have lost their last three games - against Pakistan, holders Australia and England.

They now have the additional incentive of proving to Tendulkar that his prediction of an India appearance in the final was premature.

"We definitely deserve to be here," New Zealand captain Kane Williamson said at his pre-match press conference.

"Although we've qualified fourth we've got as equal an opportunity as anybody else."

Batting first has become an increasingly successful tactic at the World Cup in general and at Old Trafford in particular. In all five previous games on the ground, the team batting first has won.&nbsp;

But <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/heres-the-fab-four-cricket-world-cup-2019-234111">Kohli </a>said,&nbsp;"It comes back to the same point -&nbsp;handling pressure. You make two bad decisions when you are chasing and the game goes too far away from you to pull it back.''

"We are not worried about the toss. You have to be prepared both ways. We can't say if we lose the toss we have no hope. We should believe enough in ourself as a side to overcome any situation."

Williamson has been in fine form, making match-winning hundreds against South Africa and the West Indies.

But his 481 tournament runs represent nearly 29 percent of <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-know-what-will-happen-if-india-vs-new-zealand-match-gets-abandoned-234101">New Zealand</a>'s total.

Sachin Tendulkar may have unwittingly provided New Zealand with extra motivation to cause a huge upset in Tuesday's World Cup semi-final against India when he wished MS Dhoni happy birthday and "all the very best for the next two games". "The Indian team always carries a lot of expectation and pressure whenever we play," Kohli told reporters. "We are quite used to that over the years. We are better equipped to react in these situations because we know what these kind of games and our fan base and the expectations bring," added Kohli. England coach Trevor Bayliss believes his side have "a point to prove" now they are <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/england-beat-new-zealand-by-119-runs-to-reach-world-cup-semis-232875">in the semi-finals of the World Cup</a> after falling short in the last two major international tournaments.

A dramatic last-over defeat by the West Indies saw them finish runners-up in the 2016 World Twenty20 while a year later they lost at home to Pakistan in the semi-finals of the Champions Trophy.

England, whose 15-man squad features seven survivors from both of those losses, are now through to their first World Cup semi-final since 1992 and will face either champions Australia or India at Edgbaston a week on Thursday.

The team has effectively been in knockout mode for their last two matches, with wins over India and New Zealand guaranteeing their place in the last four.

"You will have to ask the players but they probably think they have a point to prove," said Bayliss following England's 119-run thrashing of New Zealand.

"We have to be able to produce what we have done in the last two games in the semi-final so the fact these have been more or less quarter-finals should serve us well."

The Australian, a former coach of Sri Lanka, added: "Semi-final and final cricket is a different level again but as long as these guys (go) about their processes right in their mental approach then we give ourselves a good chance.

"All I can ask is we play good cricket because we know if we play good cricket the opposition will have to play extremely well to beat us."

England's shock 20-run loss to Sri Lanka threatened to derail their World Cup campaign and left even the usually laid-back Bayliss concerned.

"We completely went away from how we had been playing the game for the previous four years," he said.

"I thought we tried to just survive and bat for 50 overs and that kept Sri Lanka in the match.

"We were able to have a chat and regroup before two very important games and the way the players have been able to adjust after those losses has been fantastic.

"Everyone spoke, including the younger players in the group, and they were very honest about how they were feeling and what they thought they had to do to crack it."

"These last two matches we have got back to our normal approach," Bayliss said.

England have a 'point to prove' in World Cup semis, says Trevor Bayliss

<a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/chris-gayle-fails-to-break-brian-laras-record-in-world-cup-swansong-233191">West Indies</a> should follow England's example to return stronger in the next World Cup, all-rounder Carlos Brathwaite said after the two-time champions exited the tournament with only two victories from nine matches.

Jason Holder and his men entered the tournament as a potential dark horse but blew hot and cold in between wins in their opener against <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/pakistan-will-aim-to-score-500-runs-against-bangladesh-says-skipper-sarfaraz-233173">Pakistan </a>and their final match against Afghanistan.

Despite their early exit, the emergence of batsmen Shai Hope, Nicholas Pooran and Shimron Hetmyer have made Caribbean fans optimistic about the team's future.

Brathwaite wants them to imitate <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/england-have-a-point-to-prove-in-world-cup-semis-says-trevor-bayliss-233207">England </a>who have transformed themselves after crashing out of the 2015 World Cup, acquiring an array of stroke makers who routinely help the team to 300-plus totals.

"As a team, we need to regroup," Brathwaite, who nearly pulled off a thrilling victory against New Zealand with a spectacular century, told reporters.''

"We have some time off, some aching bodies will get time to recuperate and then it's about finding ways and combinations to compete and win series.''

"Hopefully we can take that winning mentality into the next World Cup. If you look at 2015 and what England did after the World Cup, they have built straight up to the 2019 World Cup and it's paying dividends," Brathwaite said.

England, who entered the tournament as the top-ranked ODI team but have since slipped to the second place, have joined Australia and India in the semi-finals with <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ross-taylor-slams-skipper-kane-williamsons-critics-ahead-of-new-zealand-vs-england-clash-232639">New Zealand</a> set to complete the last four line-ups.

"I don't know off the field what the plans are for the 2023 World Cup but I think it's something we need to look at and build towards that," Brathwaite said.

Overall, the all-rounder said, it was an experience that West Indies must capitalise on to return stronger as a team.

"There is disappointment in the changing rooms at not making the final four but we're thankful for the good performances," he said.

"(Quick) Sheldon Cottrell had a fantastic tournament and at times like these, it's easy to let those things go missing.''

"But as a team we came together, we highlighted the guys that we thought had good performances and the guys that didn't will take the lessons and come back from it so we can start to win bilateral series leading up to the next World Cup," Brathwaite added.

After registering a comprehensive 119-run victory over New Zealand, England's pacer Mark Wood said that he got really lucky to dismiss Kiwi skipper <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-morgan-hails-bairstow-roy-while-williamson-rues-lack-of-partnerships-232936">Kane Williamson</a>.

Williamson was playing steadily during the chase of 307 runs against England.

Ross Taylor punched a delivery from Wood down the ground, but Wood stuck his hand out and he got the slightest of deflection onto the stumps at the non-striker's end.

Williamson who was backing up in trying to steal a run, was found short of his ground and was eventually sent back to the pavilion.

"I got lucky. He backed-up because he was looking for the run. It was nothing to do with my bowling. And it's not as if I deliberately palmed it back on the stumps. I was trying to actually stop it and got a little bit fortunate. I am pleased that in such a big game I managed to be so lucky," Wood said.

"He doesn't know how unlucky he is because I've got the smallest hands for a bloke you've ever seen. I managed to just get a fingertip to it. The umpire wasn't sure if I'd tipped it, and I was like 'I swear to God I did.'&nbsp;I knew it had flicked the end of my finger," he added.

England posted a score of 306 runs on the board. Openers Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow once again provided a solid opening partnership to the team.

Roy was dismissed for 60 but Bairstow went on to score a century. This was Bairstow's second consecutive century as he earlier scored a century against India on Sunday as well.

New Zealand were not able to chase the target as they fell 119-run short. No Kiwi batsmen were able to stay at the crease for a long time and England kept chipping away at the wickets.

As a result of this, England qualified for the semi-finals.

England have qualified for the semi-finals for the first time in the World Cup since 1992.

Wood heaped praise on Williamson, saying that the Kiwi is one of the best batsmen he has bowled at. The pacer said that the team has momentum in its corner, which will be beneficial for the side in the semi-final.

"He is one of the best players I've ever bowled at. So to get him out any way you can is pretty important. It saved me bowling at him any more so I was pretty pleased," Wood said.

"We've got some great momentum. We've had our backs up against the wall so to play with the values we have talked about in the past has shown a lot of courage from the team. Now we are going on to another huge game, but one we'll be pretty confident in," he added.

Australia's hopes of winning an Ashes series in England for the first time in 18 years have been boosted by former Test captain Steve Waugh agreeing to mentor the side.

There are very slim chances of Pakistan to qualify to the semifinal but it is mathematically possible.

If Pakistan beat Bangladesh by 316 runs after scoring 400

If Pakistan beat Bangladesh by 321 runs after scoring 450.

New Zealand who are placed fourth will qualify automatically if Pakistan fail to beat Bangladesh by one of these highly unlikely margins.

Pakistan may get 'tossed' out of World Cup even before a ball is bowled in Bangladesh match

New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson is a "world-class" leader and pundits should not brand him as timid or cautious after the Kiwis lost their last two matches at the Cricket World Cup, batsman Ross Taylor said on Tuesday.

<a href="https://www.google.com/url?client=internal-uds-cse&amp;cx=006054055338965708568:09spwrlibei&amp;q=https://www.wionews.com/sports/new-zealands-trent-boult-takes-world-cup-hat-trick-against-australia-231583&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwik5ZzOkZjjAhVMLo8KHbaeC2kQFjAGegQIBhAC&amp;usg=AOvVaw2bi3h_rwdFfwzpCSvM9Bvz">New Zealand</a> were firm favourites to become the first team to seal a semi-final spot after winning five matches in a row but consecutive losses to Pakistan and Australia have left Williamson's side in third place with one game to go.

British media have picked on Williamson's sedate captaincy style which they said was in stark contrast to former captain Brendon McCullum's gung-ho approach but Taylor said he was not concerned by the reaction from pundits.

"I think Kane is a fantastic world-class batsman and a world-class captain," he told reporters ahead of Wednesday's match against England. "You don't have to look far, the last couple of matches.''

"There are some pundits out there saying he was a great captain. We lose a couple of games and he is a bad captain. He is still a great captain, leads from the front and the team respect him and I love playing under him.''

Brendon would want to set very attacking fields throughout the whole match and Kane would pick his moments when he wants to attack," said Taylor.

Taylor said he expected a high-scoring match at The Riverside Ground after Sri Lanka beat West Indies by 23 runs at the same venue on Monday, with both teams scoring 300-plus runs.

"I think it will be a good wicket," Taylor added. "I think we saw yesterday (in the) Sri Lanka-West Indies (game), 300 played 300. So I think we've got to expect... scores of 300-plus.

Ross Taylor slams skipper Kane Williamson's critics ahead of New Zealand vs England clash

Defending champions United States reached the women's World Cup final for the fifth time after an incident-packed 2-1 win over England, who missed a late penalty, on Tuesday.

In a tournament that has earned unprecedented attention, the much-anticipated game certainly delivered with an abundance of excitement and relentless effort, topped by moments of wonderful skill.

It was business as usual for the three-times World Cup winners but for England there was agony as skipper Steph Houghton missed an 84th-minute penalty that could have pushed the game into extra time.

After a powerful start from the Americans, Christen Press, replacing the absent Megan Rapinoe, opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a fine header but the Lionesses fought back, levelling nine minutes later with Ellen White's sixth goal of the tournament.

The US&nbsp;restored their advantage in the 31st minute through Alex Morgan's header from Lindsey Horan's perfectly floated ball -- a goal which Morgan, on her 30th birthday, celebrated with a mocking 'sip of tea' gesture.

England thought they had levelled in the 69th minute, through another excellent White finish, but the goal was ruled out for offside by VAR video review.

VAR did provide England with a lifeline though, a penalty awarded for a foul on White, but Houghton's soft spot kick was saved by Alyssa Naeher.

England had defender Millie Bright sent off for a second booking three minutes from the end.

The drama on a remarkable night began before the game when the team-sheets showed that Rapinoe, who had scored four goals in the last two games, had been left on the bench, most likely with an injury although the absence was not explained by US&nbsp;team officials.

There was an unwelcome surprise for England too with goalkeeper Karen Bardsley missing out with a hamstring injury and Carly Telford drafted in.

As so often, the Americans were fast out of the traps and launched a wave of early attacks and high pressing which England's defence struggled to cope with.

Telford was called into early action to parry a fierce shot from Rose Lavelle after the midfielder had slipped the ball through the legs of Bright and, luckily for the Lionesses, Morgan blasted the loose ball over the bar.

The early lead the defending champions had threatened came in the 10th minute when Kelley O'Hara whipped in a cross from the right and Press lost her marker Lucy Bronze and headed firmly past Telford.

With the US&nbsp;fully exploiting the space they were given in midfield, England were in danger of letting the game slip out of their control but against the run of play they levelled in superb style.

Keira Walsh's sweeping cross-field pass found Beth Mead on the left and her ball inside was met first time by White, who lifted a side-foot shot in off the far post.

The Lionesses were back in the game but they soon needed Telford again to keep out a fierce snap-shot from the excellent Lavelle.

But the quality of the Americans in the final third was displayed in perfect fashion when Press collected a ball from deep on the left flank and fed Horan, whose delightful lofted pass was met by Morgan with a pinpoint header that flashed past Telford.

Walsh forced Naeher into a full-stretch save with a powerful strike from 20 metres out but England needed the tactical adjustments that coach Phil Neville made at the break.

The improved approach looked to have paid dividends when Jill Scott's defence-splitting through ball was slotted home by White but to the agony of the Lionesses the VAR signal was made and the review showed the England striker offside by the tightest of margins.

The next time the signal was made for review, it was after White went down in the area under challenge from Becky Sauerbrunn and after some delay the Brazilian referee pointed to the spot.

But Houghton, so dependable in so many ways for England, let the nerves get to her and a soft kick was easily saved by Naeher.

It was the killer blow for England and a major let-off for the Americans. When Bright was dismissed any chance of a late upset went with her.

US reach World Cup final with dramatic win over England

World Cup: Key battles in India vs England encounter

Kevin Pietersen, former <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/worlde-cup-favourites-tag-doesnt-bother-england-ahead-of-clash-against-india-231454">England </a>batsman has tweeted some squad advice for Indian captain Virat Kohli and head coach Ravi Shastri ahead of Sunday's big match against England.

Pietersen, who was supporting youngster Rishabh Pant's inclusion in the Indian squad after opener Shikhar Dhawan was ruled out of the World Cup due to thumb injury has now taken a U-turn.

"Shikha OUT the World Cup. Get Pant on the plane ASAP. KL Rahul to open and Pant at number 4," Pietersen had tweeted.&nbsp;

Pietersen now suggests India should stick with Vijay Shankar at the number four spot instead of looking to replace him with Rishabh Pant.

"Dear Virat &amp; Ravi - please don't drop Vijay Shankar. I think he's coming into his own and would potentially win you tomorrow's game. Don't think about Pant. He needs another 3 weeks prep before I think he can get into your World Cup side. Thanks, boys," Pietersen tweeted.

Kevin Pieterson gives devious advice to Virat Kohli ahead of England clash

England are still in control of their destiny at the Cricket World Cup and the mood is pretty good in the camp despite "external pressures", wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler said ahead of Sunday's blockbuster clash against India.

Eoin Morgan's men entered the tournament as the number one one-day team on a mission to end <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-people-are-waiting-for-us-to-fail-says-englands-jonny-bairstow-231113">England's </a>agonising wait for a first 50-overs World Cup title, that too on home soil.

Back-to-back defeats by Sri Lanka and Australia have not only cost them their top ODI rankings but also jeopardised their semi-final prospects in their home World Cup.

Buttler conceded the team were feeling the pressure but assured they were not panicking.

"Mood in the camp is still very good," Buttler told reporters at Edgbaston.

"Naturally there are some external pressures. It would be naive to say we got blinkers on and not aware of things going on outside or the pressure of the tournament,'' Buttler said.

"We know we didn't perform well enough in the previous two games to be beaten but we still got the opportunity to put that right and the guys turned up with smile on their faces and ready for a big week," Buttler added.

The straightforward way to reach the semi-finals will be to beat India and New Zealand -&nbsp;teams they have not defeated at the World Cup since 1992 - while even one loss would put them at the mercy of other results.

Lasith Malinga's four-wicket masterclass in Leeds derailed England's chase against Sri Lanka and Australia outplayed them next to compound their crisis.

"Against Sri Lanka, we're very disappointed with the way we played, we should have got over the line in that game," Buttler said of his team's failure to chase down 233 in that match,'' Buttler said.

"Against Australia, we, unfortunately, did not get the early wickets that we were hoping to and they did get those early wickets. That was big phase of the game and credit to Australia. We got two massive fixtures to come, obviously a huge game on Sunday. Everything is still within our hands, these are stuff we can control and that's what we will be aiming to do," he added.

Buttler's assertion notwithstanding, teammate <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/bairstows-england-comments-pathetic-says-michael-vaughan-231428">Jonny Bairstow</a> has betrayed signs of pressure as he flayed former players for criticising the team's performance in the last two matches.

Asked if England had surrendered the favourite's tag to India, who remain the tournament's only unbeaten team so far, Buttler said labels were the last thing on their mind.

"I don't think 'favourite' or 'underdog' means too much for us. We know we need to play better, we know we are capable of playing better, and we look forward to the challenge of facing a very strong Indian team," Buttler said.

World Cup: 'Favourites' tag doesn't bother England ahead of clash against India

Former England opening batsman Marcus Trescothick announced on Thursday he would be retiring from cricket at the end of the season, aged 43.

In 27 seasons as a professional, the Somerset player featured in 76 tests for <a href="https://www.google.com/url?client=internal-uds-cse&amp;cx=006054055338965708568:09spwrlibei&amp;q=https://www.wionews.com/sports/live-updates-cricket-world-cup-2019-match-32-england-vs-australia-230276&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiqs6javovjAhWJso8KHRqtC-EQFjAAegQIAhAC&amp;usg=AOvVaw3m01AktRlhFAruVFxcUneV">England </a>and helped them win the Ashes in 2005.

His best test score of 219 was against South Africa at the Oval in 2003.

Trescothick's international career stalled in 2006 due to a stress-related illness, which he blamed on the 'constant grind' of being away from home.

He left a Tour of India and that year's <a href="https://www.google.com/url?client=internal-uds-cse&amp;cx=006054055338965708568:09spwrlibei&amp;q=https://www.wionews.com/sports/englands-jonny-bairstow-picks-world-cup-glory-over-ashes-win-217217&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwia-Y--vovjAhVHrY8KHcBEAh8QFjAEegQIAhAC&amp;usg=AOvVaw1Nwiam-TPI_zIWbpmOggqP">Ashes </a>Tour of Australia before retiring from international cricket in 2008.

"It’s been an incredible 27 years and I’ve loved every minute of it," the left-hander said in a statement on a Somerset website.

"However, everything has to come to an end eventually. I’ve been discussing my future with the club and my family for a while and we felt that now was the appropriate time to make this announcement,"&nbsp;Trescothick said.

Trescothick made his Somerset debut in 1993 and his 52 first-class centuries for them and 7,374 List A runs are a club record.

In 27 seasons as a professional, the Somerset player featured in 76 tests for England and helped them win the Ashes in 2005. His best test score of 219 was against South Africa at the Oval in 2003. Trescothick's international career stalled in 2006 due to a stress-related illness, which he blamed on the 'constant grind' of being away from home. He left a Tour of India and that year's Ashes Tour of Australia before retiring from international cricket in 2008. "It’s been an incredible 27 years and I’ve loved every minute of it," the left-hander said in a statement on a Somerset website. "However, everything has to come to an end eventually. I’ve been discussing my future with the club and my family for a while and we felt that now was the appropriate time to make this announcement," Trescothick said. Trescothick made his Somerset debut in 1993 and his 52 first-class centuries for them and 7,374 List A runs are a club record.

KL Rahul is "disappointed" at not being able to convert his starts but not at all "worried" as he believes that he is doing a lot of things right.

Rahul had scores of 26, 11 not out, 57, 30 and 48 in five completed games and barring the one against Australia where he came in at the fag end of the innings, he has got out after getting set.

"It's a bit disappointing," the talented Karnataka batsman said, accepting that he should have gone on to score a few more runs.&nbsp;I am doing the hard work in getting through the first 10 or 15 overs, or as an opening batsmen, scoring the first 25, 30 runs, which is the hardest. (But then getting out) when the time comes to accelerate and maybe take the game deeper, so a bit disappointed that I have not been able to do that," Rahul lamented.

He will certainly assess and do the course correction but he does not want to brood over what has already done.

"But again I can sit, I will sit and assess, but it won't worry me that much because there are a lot of things I'm doing right, and I know that the mistakes I've made I can learn from them and get better," Rahul said at the post-match press conference after India beat the West Indies by 125 runs on Thursday.

He got out playing a reverse sweep to off-spinner Mohammed Nabi against Afganistan and versus <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ms-dhoni-is-legend-of-the-game-we-always-back-him-says-indian-skipper-virat-kohli-231009">West Indies</a>, it was a pitched up delivery from Jason Holder that brought about his downfall.

"Against Afghanistan, I would not say it (reverse sweep) was a bad shot. It was a shot I play all the time. And more often than not I hit it for four, so I get it away. But unfortunately, I did not execute it," Rahul said.

"But the planning and the timing of that shot maybe was questionable because I needed to stitch up a partnership with Virat," he admitted.

"And today (vs <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-india-crush-west-indies-by-125-runs-230985">West Indies</a>), as a batsman, it disappoints you but then again you know bowlers are allowed to bowl good balls. And you do make mistakes. And I can't sit back and break my head about it. I just go on and try to start fresh in Birmingham and try to get a big one," Rahul said.&nbsp;

He was always "ready" to juggle up and down the order, and Shikhar Dhawan's untimely injury did not change much for him.

"I know that Shikhar getting injured was unfortunate. And I had to go to the top of the order. But not that I never prepared for opening the batting. In my head, the last one or two years I have been preparing for whatever might be my role," the 27-year-old right-handed batsman said.

In fact, he is more comfortable opening the batting as that has been his natural slot in all forms of cricket.

"I had to prepare hard for number four because that's not where I batted all my life. I did that. And now to come back to open the batting again, it's just a bit more comfortable and easier for me because I've batted it all my life," Rahul said.

On India's not so impressive batting show in the past two games, Rahul said that both wickets weren't easy for scoring runs.

In fact, he revealed that when he and Rohit were batting, they had sent a message to the dressing room that the wicket was two-paced and 260 was a par-score.

Asked about <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/virat-kohlis-team-india-currently-only-unbeaten-team-in-cricket-world-cup-2019-230997">Virat Kohli</a> once again looking like a different player compared to all others who struggled, Rahul said it's his special ability to get runs irrespective of the conditions.

"I don't think he's doing anything different. He has been doing the same thing for how long I can remember since the time he started playing cricket, this is what he has been doing, performing consistently," he observed.

"And no matter what condition, what wicket condition, who the bowlers are, he always finds a way to get runs, always finds a way to put the bowlers under pressure," Rahul added.

World Cup: Disappointed on my conversion rate, says India's KL Rahul after West Indies win

World Cup: Fourth week was all about qualification and knockouts

Wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav says <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/virat-kohlis-team-india-currently-only-unbeaten-team-in-cricket-world-cup-2019-230997">India </a>have showed they can defend relatively smaller totals with victories over West Indies and Afghanistan in the ongoing World Cup.

The <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-disappointed-on-my-conversion-rate-says-indias-kl-rahul-after-west-indies-win-231084">Indian </a>attack defended 224 against Afghanistan and 268 against West Indies on Thursday, with almost all the bowlers playing a part in these wins.

The all-round efforts show that India's bowling attack is not just about the world's number one bowler Jasprit Bumrah.

"Jasprit has been bowling really well and has been for a couple of years since his international debut," said Kuldeep, who took 1/35 including the crucial wicket of Nicholas Pooran for 28 against the West Indies.

"Then you have (Mohammed) Shami, who was only playing his second game and bowled really well. We've got a good fast bowling attack, as well as spinners. We're just looking for the team combination. We're doing really well as a bowling attack and that is important. In the last game (against Afghanistan) we defended 225 and showed we can defend a total like this," said Kuldeep.

Although the match finally turned out to be one-sided, the West Indies seemed in the hunt at the halfway stage.

Kemar Roach's three wickets had helped them put India under pressure, but <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/ms-dhoni-is-legend-of-the-game-we-always-back-him-says-indian-skipper-virat-kohli-231009">Mahendra Singh Dhoni</a> (56 not out) and Hardik Pandya (46) made crucial contributions.

"We played really well. At one moment we were looking at 250 and then Mahendra and Hardik gave us a good total," Kuldeep said.

"270 was really good on this track. Later the ball was spinning a bit and that gave us momentum. Shami picking up two early wickets was huge for us, then Hardik got one and I got one so it was a really satisfying performance," added Kuldeep.

Australia coach Justin Langer thinks it unlikely that frontline quicks Mitchell Starc and Pat Cummins will be rested at the World Cup even if the defending champions have already qualified for the semi-finals.

Langer's side secured their spot in the last four with a 64-run win over hosts England at Lord's on Tuesday and return to the famous north London ground on Saturday to face neighbours New Zealand in their penultimate round-robin tie.

With the Ashes test series in England to come after the World Cup, <a href="https://www.google.com/url?client=internal-uds-cse&amp;cx=006054055338965708568:09spwrlibei&amp;q=https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-i-thrive-on-crowd-booing-i-love-it-says-australias-david-warner-230818&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiN-6XY5YvjAhVEc3AKHTaUA2w4ChAWMAF6BAgPEAI&amp;usg=AOvVaw2UoBSHL1BdMQ1TwX3542EY">Australia </a>might be forgiven for giving the pace duo a rest but Langer said the players would probably not want to put their feet up at any stage of the tournament.

"I would be surprised if either of those guys rest up," Langer told a news conference.

"The challenge is going to be that we have long layoffs now, a bit of a layoff here, then five or six days in Manchester, we have to manage that really well. So I don’t think they will want to rest," Langer said.

Left-armer Starc is the top wicket-taker at the <a href="https://www.google.com/url?client=internal-uds-cse&amp;cx=006054055338965708568:09spwrlibei&amp;q=https://www.wionews.com/sports/cricket-world-cup-semi-final-scenario-pakistan-stay-alive-england-vs-australia-at-lords-key-to-shaping-top-four-230038&amp;sa=U&amp;ved=2ahUKEwiN-6XY5YvjAhVEc3AKHTaUA2w4ChAWMAN6BAgQEAI&amp;usg=AOvVaw0CkvlpSb3Qm_zBJJtGp8ta">World Cup</a> so far with 19 from seven matches and while Cummins started well with 11 from his first five matches, he drew blanks against Bangladesh and England.

Langer said he was not concerned at all with the 26-year-old's form.

"He hasn't got the wickets in the last two games, but he's still been a huge part of our side," Langer added.

"He's someone who's so reliable that you go to when you either need a wicket or you need some control in a game. He provides so much for the side," he said.

Both pacemen were put into the shade a little on Tuesday, however, when Jason Behrendorff took five for 44 after bowling James Vince through the gate for a duck with the second ball of the England innings.

"To come to <a href="https://www.wionews.com/sports/world-cup-people-are-waiting-for-us-to-fail-says-englands-jonny-bairstow-231113">England </a>and bowl on the big stage as well as he did, it will be a great confidence boost for him," said Langer, who coached the left-arm seamer at Western Australia.

"I've seen it for a long time ... he is a very good athlete and he's an incredible professional so he will do everything possible to play. And he's a really nice person. To see those sort of people get a reward is really pleasing,"&nbsp;Langer said.
