Harry Kane kept England on course to qualify for Euro 2020 as the skipper's hat-trick inspired a 4-0 demolition of Bulgaria on Saturday.

Southgate earned criticism on social media for not giving starts to in-form youngsters Jadon Sancho and Mason Mount against Bulgaria.

Kieran Trippier was a beneficiary of Southgate's faith in his proven troops, the Atletico Madrid right-back&nbsp;earning a recall ahead of Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold.

Trippier was caught out of position early on when Marcelinho got in behind him and picked out Wanderson for a shot that was too close to England keeper Jordan Pickford.

That was the low point of a subdued start from England, but Bulgaria, adopting a defensive 4-5-1 formation, were so cautious that they allowed Southgate's men to gradually find their rhythm.

Kane had the ball in the net from Sterling's cross in the 19th minute, but the captain's close-range effort was correctly ruled out for offside.

Farcical defending

Kane didn't have to wait long for his first goal as he capitalised on Bulgaria's farcical defending in the 24th minute.

Recklessly trying to play inside their own penalty area, Bulgaria were caught out as Georgi Sarmov's backpass to Plamen Iliev prompted the keeper to hurriedly poke towards Vasil Bozhikov.

Sterling sensed Bulgaria's panic and nipped in to alertly steal possession before clipping his pass back towards Kane, who slotted into the empty net from close-range.

The inclusion of Everton's Michael Keane alongside Harry Maguire at the heart of England's defence underlined a lack of depth at that position.

Keane has suffered from injury and confidence issues since he left Burnley two years ago, while Maguire had to go off for a few minutes during the warm-up after accidentally clashing heads with team-mate Declan Rice.

Neither looked sharp when Galin Ivanov found space between them to meet Strahil Popov's cross, only for the winger to waste his golden opportunity to equalise by nodding a weak header straight at Pickford.

Bulgaria squandered another chance immediately after half-time when Wanderson was granted time and space for a shot that Pickford repelled at his near post.

England were roused by that escape and killed off the visitors in the 49th minute.

"In terms of walking off the pitch, that isn't something they're all on board with. None of the current team has expressed that as a preference... But they have had an opportunity to speak (publicly) and have an impact that way."

European football's governing body UEFA has been urged to take strong action over racist incidents in Monday's Euro 2020 qualifier between Montenegro and England in Podgorica and will receive a report from an independent monitoring group.

As well as a complaint from the English FA, UEFA will also examine the referee's report and the official report from their own match delegate.

Independent monitoring group FARE had an observer at the game and said they will also submit a report.

UEFA said they will not comment until their disciplinary body has received those reports while FARE said their evidence would be sent to the Swiss-based body.

"We had an observer present who picked up evidence of racial abuse. Our monitoring team have been compiling the evidence we have before presenting it to UEFA," FARE said in a statement.

"We hope that UEFA will act decisively, the sanctions that could be applied for an offence of this kind range from a partial stadium closure to full stadium closure."

"I definitely heard abuse of Danny Rose when he got booked at the end of the game," said Southgate.

The Football Association announced on Sunday that England's legendary footballer will make his farewell appearance.

Leicester City midfielder James Maddison has only been in the Premier League for two months, but his impact has been such that he is now being tipped as a missing creative link in Gareth Southgate's England side.

After a 22 million pounds ($29 million) close-season move from Championship (second tier) Norwich City, Maddison has played all eight games in the Premier League and the number 10 is now in line to face Croatia and Spain in England's Nations League matches.

The 21-year-old is unlikely to be overawed.

His Premier League debut came at Old Trafford against Manchester United on the televised opening Friday of the season and he left observers purring at his classy display despite Leicester falling to a 2-1 defeat.

"There was a moment in the warm-up when the crowd was filling up and it just hit me that this was the Premier League. You see all these TV cameras around the pitch, which you don't get at Championship level, and I thought: 'I've worked hard to be here. I deserve to be here. I belong here'," he told reporters.

"I did well on the day and we put in a good performance and maybe could have got more out of the game. There is no bigger stage than Old Trafford on the opening day of the season or Friday night. That was a dream I will never forget," he said.

There was certainly no sign of nerves as he showed his creativity and invention up against United`s World Cup-winning midfielder Paul Pogba.

It was a display that immediately suggested he could be the missing link for Southgate in the role between midfield and attack, where England are not blessed with an abundance of creative talents.

"I always had the confidence," he said. "I went into pre-season with the mind-set of 'Be fearless, go and show everyone what you can do'.&nbsp;

"If, just because it's the Premier League, I started trying to play the simple pass instead of trying the harder pass that is not the type of person I am to be honest.&nbsp;

"I went in with an open mind and it has worked out well. I`m really enjoying it and loving life in the Premier League," he added.

While he acknowledges that he is a new face in the England set-up, the midfielder will not be a shrinking violet.

"You have to come here and be yourself," he said. "If you come here and act like the new kid or the young lad then I don`t think it will work. Gareth (Southgate) said to me: 'Go and show what you are about and why you are here'.&nbsp;

"I've always believed in myself. One of my biggest attributes, if you speak to my coaches from when I was a young lad, is that I've always believed in my own ability and been a confident young man.&nbsp;

"There's never been a point when I've questioned myself. If I've ever had a setback at a club I've always made it my mission to show why I should be in the team instead of dwelling on it."

Maddison says he is at the right club for a player looking to break into the England team, with Leicester centre back Harry Maguire and left back Ben Chilwell also in Southgate's squad.

That was a factor, he said, behind his move from Norwich.

"We have a really good English spine at Leicester at the minute," he said.&nbsp;

"I looked at the Leicester squad and saw Harry and Jamie (Vardy) as regulars in England set up, I thought that is where I want to be, that is where I want to get to.&nbsp;

"I was a little bit off it at the time but (I thought) that is eventually where I want to be, alongside those guys and here we are. So I am very happy with the decision I made. It is going very well."

Former Chelsea and England captain John&nbsp;Terry&nbsp;has decided to call time on his playing career after 23 years in the game.

The central defender has been without a club since leaving Championship (second-tier) side Aston Villa following their playoff defeat by Fulham at Wembley Stadium last season.

"After 23 incredible years as a footballer, I have decided now is the right time for me to retire from playing,"&nbsp;Terry, 37, wrote on his Instagram account on Sunday.

He has been linked by British media with a managerial role at Villa Park as the number two to former Arsenal and France forward Thierry Henry following the sacking of Steve Bruce on Wednesday, with Villa now struggling in 15th place.

Terry, a no-nonsense defender who won 78 England caps, left Chelsea in 2017 after 19 seasons at the west London club where he won 17 trophies, including five Premier League titles, five FA Cup triumphs and three League Cup trophies.

Terry&nbsp;also won both a Champions League and Europa League winners' medal although he did not appear in either final, having been suspended for the 2012 European Cup triumph and injured for the Europa League success the following year.

After he announced his retirement, Chelsea wrote on Twitter: "Twenty-two years as a Blue. Fifteen major trophies. One of the finest careers of any Englishman in the history of the game. Enjoy your retirement, JT."

England captain Wayne Rooney has set his sights on winning the European Championship, buoyed by the belief that the gap between his team and Europe&#39;s continental footballing elite has narrowed considerably in the past few years. 
 
Monday&#39;s 0-0 draw with Slovakia ensured that England finished second in Group B behind Wales, potentially complicating their route to the final as they are now in the same side of the draw as World Cup winners Germany, defending European champions Spain and hosts France.
