Billionaire Elon Musk's space giant SpaceX would launch a new mission – making its Starbase site a new Texas city, American media reported on Friday (Dec 13). On Thursday, SpaceX sent a letter to local officials requesting an election to turn what it calls Starbase — the South Texas site where SpaceX builds and launches its massive Starship rockets — into an incorporated city. Residents of the area known as Starbase submitted the petition, SpaceX said. The area is on the southern tip of Texas at Boca Chica Beach, near the Mexican border. 'Need the ability to grow Starbase as a community' In a letter addressed to Cameron County, Starbase's General Manager Kathryn Lueders said, "To continue growing the workforce necessary to rapidly develop and manufacture Starship, we need the ability to grow Starbase as a community. That is why we are requesting that Cameron County call an election to enable the incorporation of Starbase as the newest city in the Rio Grande Valley." Elon Musk had proposed the idea in 2021 when he wrote a social media post which said, "Creating the city of Starbase, Texas." 'Petition to be reviewed' Speaking to the news agency Associated Press, Cameron County official Eddie Treviño Jr said on Thursday that despite talks of incorporating a Starbase in 2021, this was the first time a petition had been officially filed. “Our legal and elections administration will review the petition, see whether or not it complied with all of the statutory requirements and then we’ll go from there,” Treviño Jr added. What A Second Trump Presidency Means For Big Us Tech Firms? | World News | WION

Australia's prime minister said Sunday he was ready to "engage" with billionaire X owner Elon Musk over his criticism of the government's ban on under-16s joining social media.

Anthony Albanese hailed the parliament's Thursday passage of landmark legislation requiring social media firms to take "reasonable steps" to prevent young teens from having accounts.

The law, which will come into effect after 12 months, gives few details of how it will be enforced, including how sites like Facebook, Instagram and X will verify users' ages.

Musk – who has been named Donald Trump's government efficiency chief in the incoming US administration – posted on X last month that the law "seems like a backdoor way to control access to the Internet by all Australians".

"We will talk to anyone," Albanese said when asked if he would discuss the legislation with Musk.

"With regard to Elon Musk, he has an agenda. He's entitled to push that as the owner of X, formerly known as Twitter," Albanese told Australian public broadcaster ABC.

When the interviewer mentioned that Musk was also Trump's "right-hand man", the prime minister replied: "We will engage, we will engage."

Social media firms that fail to comply with the new law face fines of up to Aus$50 million (US$32.5 million) for "systemic breaches".

Musk's platform in October lost a legal bid to avoid a US$417,000 fine levelled by Australia's online watchdog, which has accused X of failing to stamp out harmful posts.

<h2>'Bullying'</h2>

The government will decide over the next 12 months how to implement the ban, Albanese said, insisting, however, that it would not require people to provide identification.

"The obligation will be on social media companies to do everything they can to make sure that those people under 16 don't have access to social media," the prime minister said.

"We know that social media companies have more information about you and I than some of our friends do," he added.

"We know that they are able to do that, and the obligation will be on them."

Albanese said he was "determined" to implement the legislation.

"I've met parents who have had to bury their children as a result of the impact that social media has had as a result of bullying, and we need to do something about it," he said.

Several social media giants have promised to work with the government on implementing the law.

But they have also criticised the legislation, saying it was "rushed", full of unanswered questions, and did not take into account the views of experts who opposed it.

The UN children's charity UNICEF Australia warned this week that the law was no "silver bullet" against online harm and could push kids into "covert and unregulated" spaces online.

"The obligation will be on social media companies to do everything they can to make sure that those people under 16 don't have access to social media," the prime minister said. "We know that social media companies have more information about you and I than some of our friends do," he added. "We know that they are able to do that, and the obligation will be on them." Albanese said he was "determined" to implement the legislation. Ready to 'engage' with Musk: Australian PM on social media teen ban

Meta, the owner of Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, reacted with fury after Australia passed a law banning children under 16 from social media, while a minister warned tech firms the government will 'get after them' if they don't 'play ball'.

In the first such move in the world, Australia passed a law on Thursday (Nov 28) to ban under-16s from social media, citing mental health issues among other things.

The law stipulates that failure to comply would incur penalties worth up to $50 million on social media companies.

Despite their initial resistance, most major tech companies with social media platforms have grudgingly agreed to comply with the ban.

But after the law was passed, a Meta spokesperson accused the government of failing to consider young people’s voices and rushing the legislation.

“We are concerned about the process which rushed the legislation through while failing to properly consider the evidence, what industry already does to ensure age-appropriate experiences, and the voices of young people,” a Meta spokesperson said as quoted by The Guardian newspaper.

The spokesperson of the Mark Zuckerberg-owned tech giant urged 'productive consultation on all rules' of the bill 'to ensure a technically feasible outcome that does not place an onerous burden on parents and teens'.

Meta also sought a commitment that the rules will apply to all social media apps used by teens.

X owner Elon Musk had opposed the law as a 'backdoor way to control access to the Internet' for all Australians.

But the government is digging its heels on the matter.

Cabinet minister Murray Watt warned that social media firms "should take the ban seriously."

“Between those fines and social pressure, we will see social media companies play ball – and if they don’t, then we have the ability to go after them,” Watt said.

While the opposition supported the ban saying the benefits outweigh the risks, one independent MP criticised it.&nbsp;

Opposition's shadow communications minister David Coleman speaking to Sky News, asked: "What other generation in history has grown up being exposed to as much damaging content as this generation?”

Independent MP Kylea Tink called the bill a ‘1970 solution for a 2024 problem’, adding the ban was 'headline-grabbing', without saying what it would do.

It's a "piece of legislation that’s grabbing headlines, not only here but right around the world," she said, while speaking to ABC RN channel.

"But will it make any child under 16 safer on social media today? No. And in fact, it will create a high degree of anxiety amongst young Australians who are using their social media platforms to feel like they’re part of a community that may not be in their immediate circle," she added.

Elon Musk labels UK a 'tyrannical police state', backs calls for general election

Billionaire Elon Musk, tapped by US President-elect Donald Trump to slash federal government spending, lashed out at modern fighter jets on Monday, saying that drones were the future of air combat.&nbsp;

"Manned fighter jets are obsolete in the age of drones anyway. Will just get pilots killed," said the head of SpaceX, Tesla, and X, in a post on his social media platform.

Musk singled out the F-35 –&nbsp;a next-generation fighter jet manufactured by US-based Lockheed Martin that entered service in 2015 –&nbsp;for criticism.

"Meanwhile, some idiots are still building manned fighter jets like the F-35," he posted, alongside a video of hundreds of drones hovering in formation in the sky.

The F-35, the world's most advanced fighter, is stealth-capable and can also be used to gather intelligence.

For Mauro Gilli, a researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, "what makes the F-35... expensive is the software and the electronics, not the pilot per se."

This is significant "because a reusable drone would need to get all that flashy electronics of an F-35," he said on X.

He also pointed out that the existence of the F-35 had forced US rivals to develop their own aircraft and advanced radar to match it.

"By simply existing, the F-35 and the B-1 force Russia and China into strategic choices, they would not have to make otherwise (i.e. budget allocations)," Gilli said, referring to B-1 heavy bomber aircraft.

"Even if Musk were right (and he is not), deleting the programs would relax these constraints on them."

Musk followed up with, “The most entertaining outcome, especially if ironic, is most likely.” Also read: Elon Musk praises India’s electoral system, slams slow counting in US The discussion soon caught the attention of podcast host Joe Rogan, who joked about wanting to take Rachel Maddow’s job if Musk bought MSNBC. “I will wear the same outfit and glasses, and I will tell the same lies,” Rogan wrote. Musk replied, “Deal.” Musk added, “Maybe I should show up there with a sink,” referencing the viral moment when he carried a sink into Twitter's headquarters after buying the platform. Although the comments appear to be fun, they are a reference to Musk’s earlier behaviour before purchasing X in 2022. Years prior, when a user suggested he buy Twitter, Musk asked in 2017, “How much is it?” Eventually, he paid $44 billion to acquire the platform. Meanwhile, Comcast has announced plans to separate several of its cable networks, including MSNBC, CNBC, and E!, into a new publicly traded company. This decision is part of a strategic focus on NBC and Bravo, according to Comcast CEO Brian L. Roberts. "When you look at our assets, talented management team, and balance sheet strength, we are able to set these businesses up for future growth," Roberts said. MSNBC is facing declining ratings, particularly after Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election. A New York Times report noted a further dip after Morning Joe co-hosts Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski visited Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate to initiate discussions, a move that reportedly alienated some of the network’s audience. On June 4, 2024, India completed its massive vote counting for the Lok Sabha elections. The country has over 900 million eligible voters, making it the largest electorate in the world. A world record was set when 642 million voters cast their ballot and the results were delivered within hours when the voting began.&nbsp;

<h2>The delay in California's results</h2>

On November 5, 2024, the US voted to elect their next president. While it is clear that Donald Trump has secured his second term in office, the counting for votes in the most populous US state is still not complete.&nbsp;

The state has a population of over 39 million, with over 22 million registered voters. In the 2024 US presidential elections, the state had a turnout of around 16 million votes. According to the Los Angeles Times, over half a million ballots are still left to be counted in the state.

The state is notoriously known for its staggering electoral system for several years. This is due to the higher percentage of people voting through mail-in in the state when compared to other states in the US.&nbsp;While the in-person voting is quicker to verify and count, the mail-in ballot has an elaborate process of validating the votes which leads to delays in the counting. As per law, the state county elections officials have 30 days for counting and conducting an audit after the voting takes place.

Despite the significant delays, the state holds a key share of electoral votes for deciding the outcome of the elections.
