While it took the entire year 2022 to achieve an annual sale of 1 million EVs in the country, the same feat has been surpassed by mid-September 2023, indicating the greater acceptance of EVs in India.

However, there is another significant fact to be noted. More than 40 per cent of the EVs sold in the country were made in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.&nbsp;

EV Original Equipment Manufacturers based out of Tamil Nadu have churned out more than 4,10,000 (0.41 million) of the more than 1 million units sold in India&nbsp;thus far this year.

As per government data, the top five firms that have made and sold EVs from Tamil Nadu include Ola Electric, TVS Motor, Ather Energy, Ampere Vehicles, and BYD India.

According to the Tamil Nadu Government, the state aims to take forward its status as India's automobile manufacturing capital and the global top 10 auto hubs, to become a global EV capital.

The state is making strides in the EV revolution from the manufacture of cars, buses, and two &amp; three-wheelers, EV cells and motors to charging stations and upcoming future mobility parks.

Six cities in the state, Coimbatore, Tiruchi, Coimbatore, Madurai, Salem, and the capital city Chennai, have been identified to develop as&nbsp;EV hubs.

India: 1mn electric vehicles sold in 2023, over 40 per cent of them made in THIS state

Nio Inc., a Chinese company that makes electric vehicles (EVs) on Thursday, introduced a high-end smartphones that can be used with its vehicles. The newly launched smartphone has a variety of relevant features, including the ability to tell the car to park itself.

The Nio Phone, the first car-specific phone to be offered by a Chinese company, brings forth an advanced scale of EV technology in the automobile industry, where electric cars already make up more than one-third of vehicle purchases.

The phone can also be used by a Nio driver to unlock the car even when it is off and to instruct the car to drive itself to their location (which is legal in China in constrained locations and at regulated speeds).

Reuters cited William Li, the chief executive, who said that the Nio Phone had more than 30 features tailored specifically for cars and had pioneered new connectivity technologies.

"I believe many of our competitors will learn from our smartphone innovations and I welcome them to do so," he said.

Prices for three variants range from 6,499 to 7,499 yuan ($890 to $1030). Deliveries will begin on September 28 and the phone will initially only be marketed in China.

Despite worries from some investors that Li is taking on too much for the automaker, which has seen its losses increase due to a severe price battle in China, Li has continued with the smartphone project.

As noted by IDC analyst Will Wong, the automaker's main goal in developing the phone is likely to be user data collection rather than trying to make the phone a significant source of revenue.

"Smartphones will be a good platform to collect more data which is crucial in the current tech world and could potentially lead to better user experience and customer stickiness," Reuters quoted him as saying.

The newest fusion of the smartphone and automotive industries is Nio's foray. Meizu, which was acquired by a company run by the founder of Zhejiang Geely Holding, revealed smartphones in March that can connect to Geely's Lynx &amp; Co-branded automobiles but are also promoted to a wider audience of consumers.

Nio, which is ranked No. 9 among Chinese producers of electric and hybrid vehicles, has increased its investment in in-house innovations for vital parts like CPUs and batteries. It has also developed a following among its drivers in China by launching private membership clubs and providing goods like wine under the Nio brand.

Li stated at the occasion that the company employs 11,000 engineers who work on important EV smart technology components such processors, batteries, autonomous driving, and smart manufacturing.

Due to the popularity of its updated ES6 SUV, Nio has shown indications of recovery after experiencing a decline in sales in the first half of the year, with deliveries in August increasing by 81 per cent year over year.

The initiative aligns with the EU's momentous decision to mandate zero carbon emissions for all new cars sold by 2035, which has spurred European nations to establish the necessary infrastructure for emissions-free transportation.&nbsp;

The electrified road is expected to work through dynamic charging, allowing vehicles to recharge while driving. As stated by experts, this innovative technology enables vehicles to travel longer distances with smaller batteries and avoid waiting at charging stations.&nbsp;

Although the charging process for the E20 hasn't been finalized yet, there are three charging options: catenary, conductive, and inductive.&nbsp;

The catenary system requires overhead wires that provide electricity to specific types of buses or trams. The conductive charging method is suitable for private cars and heavy-duty vehicles if a conductive system like a rail transfers the electricity. On the other hand, the inductive charging option uses unique equipment buried underneath the road that sends electricity to a coil in the electric vehicle, which then stores it in the battery.

Although the Electric Road System (ERS) primarily targets trucks, a new study indicates that private cars could also reap its advantages. The study showed that integrating home charging with dynamic charging could decrease the battery size of electric cars by as much as 70 percent. The researchers also highlighted that only a quarter of Sweden's roads need to be electrified to make the ERS feasible, and it is not necessary to electrify all roads.

Sweden has partnered with France and Germany to collaborate on authority and research partnerships regarding electric roads. As other countries like India, Italy, the United Kingdom, and the United States increase their efforts in building ERS systems, Germany and Sweden are already conducting trial facilities on public roads.

As per Reuters, government subsidies and hefty tariffs that have prevented imports play a large part in Tata's success.

Nearly $5 billion over five years was granted by Congress to fund grants to states for the construction of thousands of electric vehicle charging stations. In&nbsp;a speech at the Detroit auto show, Biden also revealed that the US&nbsp;government has greatly increased its purchasing of EVs.&nbsp;

Less than 1 per cent&nbsp;of new federal purchases in 2020 were electric; that number more than doubled in 2021, and in&nbsp;2022, "agencies have acquired five times as many EVs as all of last fiscal year," according to the White House.

Almost all EV or plug-in hybrid electric models must be purchased by the government by 2027, according to an executive order issued by Biden in December. The US&nbsp;government has about 650,000 vehicles and buys about 50,000 each year.&nbsp;

The U.S. Postal Service (USPS) receives $3 billion in money from legislation that Biden signed in August to purchase more EVs and charging infrastructure. After previously planning to purchase at least 10,019 EVs, USPS informed Reuters in July that it is now seeking to buy at least 25,000 EVs out of its initial order of 50,000 delivery vehicles from Oshkosh.

It is pertinent to note that Tesla has two separate paid tiers of 'automation' for its customers. New Tesla vehicles come saddled with the default driver assistance called Autopilot.&nbsp;

Under this feature, users are able to gain access to features like 'Autosteer' and 'Traffic-Aware Cruise Control'. It is a standard feature that allows a Tesla to stay centred in its lane and use relative speed, according to surrounding traffic.

Meanwhile, the second tier, also the highest paid package is the FSD system, whose price is set to increase. Under this tier, the user not only gets the facilities from the first tier but also other cool features such as 'Navigate on Autopilot' and 'Traffic and Stop Sign Control'.

Another impressive feature included in FSD is the 'Smart summon' feature which allows a user to remotely access the car and call the car across a parking lot, without anyone getting inside the car.

Musk papering over the faults?

However, experts are wary that by making such demarcation, Musk is trying to paper over the faults of his default Autopilot system which has come under intense scrutiny in the last few weeks.&nbsp;

As reported by WION, according to data made public by American safety regulators, automakers recorded roughly 400 crashes involving vehicles with automated driver-assist systems, which included 273 Teslas.

According to CNBC, Autopilot, "full self-driving," traffic-aware cruise control, and other driver-assist technologies that have some steering and speed control were all in use when Tesla's vehicles crashed.

Meanwhile, California’s Department of Motor Vehicles has already accused Tesla of misleading the customers about the features stamped as Autopilot and FSD.&nbsp;

New Tesla vehicles come saddled with the default driver assistance called Autopilot. Under this feature, users are able to gain access to features like 'Autosteer' and 'Traffic-Aware Cruise Control'. It is a standard feature that allows a Tesla to stay centred in its lane and use relative speed, according to surrounding traffic. Meanwhile, the second tier, also the highest paid package is the FSD system, whose price is set to increase. Under this tier, the user not only gets the facilities from the first tier but also other cool features such as 'Navigate on Autopilot' and 'Traffic and Stop Sign Control'. Another impressive feature included in FSD is the 'Smart summon' feature which allows a user to remotely access the car and call the car across a parking lot, without anyone getting inside the car. However, experts are wary that by making such demarcation, Musk is trying to paper over the faults of his default Autopilot system which has come under intense scrutiny in the last few weeks. As reported by WION, according to data made public by American safety regulators, automakers recorded roughly 400 crashes involving vehicles with automated driver-assist systems, which included 273 Teslas.
