<p>Officials fear that the&nbsp;death toll in Friday's earthquake in Jajarkot could rise, as they had not been able to establish contact in the hilly area near the epicentre, some 500 km (300 miles) west of the capital Kathmandu. The district has a population of 190,000 with villages scattered in remote hills.</p>

<p>Nepal is situated&nbsp;on the boundary of two tectonic plates — the Asian and Indo-Australian plates. The collision of these two plates caused the Himalayas to rise up, with Tibet at its southern edge.</p>

<p>Every year, these two great plates converge at a rate of about four to five centimetres (two inches).&nbsp; As a result, massive energy builds up and causes tremors to occur often.</p>

<p>The epicentre of the earthquake was in Nepal's Dhading district. There was no immediate report of any casualty or damage.</p>

<p>Media reports suggest that tremors were also felt in Nepal's Bagmati, Gandaki provinces and even in India's Delhi-National Capital Region (Delhi-NCR).</p>

<p>Nepal experiences frequent earthquakes as the Himalayan country is located just where Tibetan and Indian tectonic plates meet. These plates advance two metres closer to one another every century. The massive pressure this movement generates gets released in the form of earthquakes.</p>

<p>On October 16, an earthquake of magnitude 4.8 struck Nepal's sudurpaschim province.</p>

<p>In the year 2015, a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake along with aftershocks had killed around 9000 people.</p>

<p>According to Nepal government's post-disaster needs assessment (PDNA), Nepal is the 11th most earthquake-prone country in the world.</p>

Earthquake hits Nepal's capital city Kathmandu

<p>Indian capital New Delhi and its neighbouring regions are prone to earthquakes as they fall under the seismic zone four along the Aravali fault line, where the possibility of severe intensity tremors is high.</p>

<p>On Tuesday (Oct 9), Delhi and its surrounding areas including Noida, Faridabad and Ghaziabad felt strong tremors, creating panic among residents. According to the reports, two earthquakes of 4.6 and 6.2 magnitude struck Nepal. Delhi-NCR and other regions of north India also felt its shock.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier in June, Delhi-NCR experienced strong tremors after a 5.4 magnitude earthquake jolted Doda in Jammu and Kashmir.</p>

<p>Thus, such tremors&nbsp;are not a new thing for Delhi-NCR residents. They have always had a unique way of reacting to earthquakes, as they experience the shaking once every few months. X users pour in hilarious memes and scary videos after earthquake shakes Delhi-NCR

<p>Two back-to-back earthquakes of magnitude 6.2 and 4.6 on the Richter Scale struck Nepal on Tuesday (Oct 3) afternoon in less than half an hour,&nbsp;with tremors also being felt in large parts of the neighbouring country India, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported.</p>

<p>Hours later, two more earthquakes were recorded in Nepal, however of slightly lower magnitude at 3.06 pm and 3.19 pm.&nbsp;<br />

According to the NCS,&nbsp;Nepal was first hit by an earthquake of magnitude 4.6 at 2.25 pm local time,&nbsp;occurring&nbsp;at a depth of 10 kilometres. Later at 2.51 pm, another tremor&nbsp;of magnitude 6.2 jolted the Himalayan country at a depth of 5 kilometres, the effects of which were also felt in northern India, including Uttarakhand and Delhi-NCR, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh states.</p>

<p>The epicentre of the quakes was registered around western Nepal's Bajhang district while in India,&nbsp;the epicentre was recorded 206 kilometres southeast of Joshimath in Uttarakhand and 284 km north of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh.</p>

<p>Interior ministry official Rama Acharya told Reuters that the quakes reportedly blocked a major highway in Nepal,&nbsp;an important route in the southern plains. According to local media reports, at least 12 people were injured, but no reports of casualties have come to the fore till now.</p>

<p>“In the Delhi region, the magnitude was 3...We have received responses from people that it was felt in Uttarakhand, Punjab, Delhi, Lucknow region, Jaipur region. A few people in Ahmedabad region are also telling us that they felt it there..." said National Centre for Seismology scientist Sanjay Kumar Prajapati, reports PTI news agency.</p>

<h2><strong>Northern India and Nepal prone to quakes</strong></h2>

<p>The central Himalayan region—which encompasses Nepal and some parts of northern India—is one of the most seismically active in the world.</p>

<p>Over the last 700 years, the region has been witnessing an increase in&nbsp;tectonic stress that might be released now or after 200 years, a 2016 study indicated.</p>

<p>According to seismologists, these quakes are a result of the convergence between the Indo-Australian and Eurasian tectonic plates that formed the Himalayan mountain ranges&nbsp;in the last 50 million years.</p>

<p>Nepal's prime minister KP Sharma Oli joined locals and civil servants at a memorial in the Kathmandu Durbar Square, a UNESCO world heritage site being rebuilt after it was badly damaged in the April 2015 quake.</p>

<p>"I would like to offer my condolences to those all who lost their lives," Oli said.</p>

<p>"We are here remembering the pain of that day... And it is also important to examine how much work we have been able to do in the last four years to restore and rebuild what we lost."&nbsp;</p>

<p>A minute's silence was observed around 11:56 am -- the time the 7.8-magnitude quake hit, triggering avalanches and landslides across the Himalayan nation and destroying schools and hospitals.</p>

<p>The disaster also reduced more than a hundred monuments to rubble, including centuries-old temples and royal palaces in the Kathmandu valley that attracted visitors from around the world.</p>

<p>The National Reconstruction Authority, the government body overseeing rebuilding, says that half of the families left homeless in the quake have already completed reconstruction and started living in their new homes.</p>

<p>Another 30 per cent are currently building new homes.</p>

<p>Families were given about $3000 in government grants over three instalments to rebuild.</p>

<p>"We still have a lot to do and we will complete it in the next 20 months," said Sushil Gyawali, chief of the authority, whose five-year mandate ends at the end of 2020.</p>

<p>But a US $9 billion reconstruction effort has been plagued by political infighting, bureaucracy and confusion among quake victims over how to obtain the grants. The government also faces an estimated US $4 billion shortfall in reconstruction funds.</p>

<p>Experts also fear that a rush to rebuild has put pressure on quake survivors to take out expensive loans and build homes that may be too small to be functional for families.</p>
