The European Space Agency, with the help of Gaia mission’s data, discovered a new family of black holes which are unique in nature. The two black holes discovered are the closest ones to the Earth till date.

Black hole Gaia BH1 is at a distance of 1560 light-years&nbsp;from Earth in the direction of the constellation Ophiuchus and Gaia BH2 is located 3800 light-years away in the constellation Centaurus.

In cosmic terms, the distance is not far and scientists have stated that two black holes are just in our cosmic backyard.

The wobbles, which were created in their companion stars’ movement, picked the two black holes.

The presence of wobble meant that the stars were not alone and proved that they were orbiting a huge object, which is ten times bigger than our Sun.

Scientists claimed that the space objects were totally invisible, and black and can only be detected because of the gravitational effects.

“What sets this new group of black holes apart from the ones we already knew about is their wide separation from their companion stars. These black holes likely have a completely different formation history than X-ray binaries," said Kareem El-Badry, who discovered the new black holes, in a statement.

The discovery of black holes was part of the analysis carried out on data which was beamed back by the Gaia mission, which was measuring the motions and positions of billions of stars present in our universe.

The changing position of stars against the sky can provide essential clues about objects which influences these stars gravitationally.

Although Gaia data revealed massive objects’ presence around the stars, Chandra X-ray Observatory and the South African MeerKAT radio telescope’s observations failed to detect any emission, which is a characteristic found in black holes.

"There are a lot of particles coming off the companion star in the form of stellar wind. But because we didn't see any radio light, that tells us the black hole isn't a great eater and not many particles are crossing its event horizon. We don’t know why that is, but we want to find out,” said Yvette Cendes, who assisted in the discovery of the second black hole.

Scientists have always known that deep down in the core of the Earth, there exist&nbsp;two blobs the size of continents. One is under the African continent and the other one is under the Pacific Ocean.

How these two blobs have spanned through centuries of Earth’s history always remained a mystery, until now. In the new research, scientists gathered that the blobs muster together and then break apart, much like continents and supercontinents.&nbsp;

The blobs have their roots 2,900 km (1,800 miles) below the surface, which is almost halfway to the centre of the Earth. These are thought to be the birthplace of rising columns of hot rock called “deep mantle plumes” that reach Earth’s surface and cause volcanic eruptions. Hence, these blobs have always remained an area of interest amongst the scientific fraternity.

The blobs are present in the mantle as they slow down waves caused by earthquakes, which suggest they are hotter than their surroundings. Scientists generally say that these blobs are linked with the movement of tectonic plates at Earth’s surface. However, how the blobs have changed over the course has puzzled the scientists.&nbsp;

One lot of scientists is of the opinion that the present blobs have acted as anchors, locked in place for hundreds of millions of years while other rocks move around them. But as we know tectonic plates and mantle changed over time, it means blobs were also changing and taking new shapes.

The new research shows Earth's blobs have changed shape and location far more than previously thought. In fact, over time they have assembled and broken up in the same way that continents and supercontinents have at Earth's surface.

The team of scientists used Australia's National Computational Infrastructure to run advanced computer simulations of how Earth's mantle has flowed over a billion years.

The team is yet to know the origin of blobs and how they were made in the first place. As per Space.com, Japanese lunar exploration firm ispace is working to put human presence into space and on the moon. In collaboration with UNESCO, the company is planning to send to the lunar surface an important part of humanity: 275 languages and other cultural artefacts.

"UNESCO is committed to preserving the linguistic diversity that represents human cultures from any crisis that threatens their destruction in the future, and preservation on the lunar surface is one means to preserve cultures," says ispace in a release posted on its website.&nbsp;

To fulfil this mission, the memory disk will contain the UNESCO Constitution's Preamble, which expresses "the importance of preserving world unity, linguistic diversity, and cultures". This preamble will be translated into 275 languages.

University of Rochester Earth scientist Wentao Huang and colleagues in their new paper write: “Earth's magnetic field was in a highly unusual state when macroscopic animals of the Ediacara fauna diversified and thrived." In previous studies, it has been established that multi-cellular life evolved on the Earth some 565 million years ago (Ediacaran period). This period surprisingly coincides with the time when our planet’s magnetic field has collapsed to its lowest levels. But we know, the magnetic field is there to protect us from solar winds. Then, how come its absence actually fuelled life on Earth? Scientists excavated igneous rocks from South Africa that formed billions of years ago and observed crystals in them and other 591 million-year-old rocks previously sampled from Brazil. It’s significant because as these rocks form, they preserve the intensity of the Earth’s magnetic field. The researchers found that the level of magnetic field had dropped to the lowest levels 500 million years ago, 30 times weaker than it is today. The period of low magnetic field lasted for nearly 26 million years, during which an explosion of biodiversity took place on our home planet. "The new data confirming and extending the UL-TAFI strengthen a potential linkage with the Ediacaran evolution of macroscopic animals," Huang and colleagues write. The scientists speculate that the lower magnetic field may have allowed more hydrogen ions to escape from Earth's atmosphere into space, which could have resulted in higher oxygen levels in the seas and skies. Higher oxygen levels then led to the explosion of biodiversity, claimed the researchers. Patrick Gasda, of Los Alamos National Laboratory's Space Science and Applications group and lead author on the study, said as quoted by phys.org, "It is difficult for manganese oxide to form on the surface of Mars, so we didn't expect to find it in such high concentrations in a shoreline deposit."&nbsp;

"On Earth, these types of deposits happen all the time because of the high oxygen in our atmosphere produced by photosynthetic life, and from microbes that help catalyze those manganese oxidation reactions," he further said.&nbsp;

"On Mars, we don't have evidence for life, and the mechanism to produce oxygen in Mars's ancient atmosphere is unclear, so how the manganese oxide was formed and concentrated here is really puzzling. These findings point to larger processes occurring in the Martian atmosphere or surface water and show that more work needs to be done to understand oxidation on Mars," Gasda added.&nbsp;

While exploring the results, the researchers analysed how manganese could have been enriched in these sands on Mars. They also attempted to find what oxidant could be responsible for the precipitation of manganese in the rocks. The paper compared the findings with the availability of Manganese on Earth.&nbsp;

On Earth, manganese deposits occur as a result of oxygen in the atmosphere, and the presence of bacteria frequently accelerates this process. Notably, the microbes on Earth can use manganese's many oxidation states as energy for metabolism.&nbsp;

The higher levels of manganese in the rocks along the lake shore on the Red Planet would have been an important energy source for life if life existed on ancient Mars.&nbsp;

The laser communications technology used in this demo has been used for transmitting messages from deep space at a speed which is 10 to 100 times faster in comparison to the current state-of-the-art radio frequency systems which is used by deep space missions. The study mentioned that the mass of such particles left behind from the worldwide distribution of re-entry satellites is already billions of times greater than the mass of the Van Allen radiation belt, which is a zone of energetic charged particles.&nbsp;

Most of the particles originate from the solar wind, that are captured by and held around a planet by that planet's magnetosphere. Earth has two such belts, and sometimes others may be temporarily created.&nbsp;

"I was very surprised. No one has given much research to the accumulation of metal dust from the space industry," Dr Solter-Hunt told Daily Mail.&nbsp;

The absence of a magnetic field is the reason why Mars is inhabitable. In her study, she said that the accumulation of highly conductive metal trash could lead to "atmospheric stripping". This is the phenomenon with Mars and Mercury.&nbsp;

According to Dr Solter-Hunt, there are around 10,000 satellites, and the number is likely to increase in 10 to 15 years. She warned, "By the time we get to 100,000 I think it could be too late."&nbsp;

The study said, "Satellite re-entries may create a global band of plasma dust with a charge higher than the rest of the magnetosphere. Therefore, perturbation of the magnetosphere from conductive satellites and their plasma dust layer should be expected and should be a field of intensive research."&nbsp;

The study added that human activity is not only impacting the atmosphere, it is clearly impacting the ionosphere.&nbsp;

This is not the first study which questioned Starlink satellites in orbit, another study published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics on August 10, 2023, claimed that the satellites are also creating a hurdle for humans to explore space.&nbsp;

Radar images of a 2,000-foot-wide asteroid were captured by NASA astronomers as the "potentially hazardous" asteroid safely passed by Earth on April 15.

The asteroid, which has been named 2013 NK4, was snapped by scientists using the Goldstone Radar in California on April 13.

"Radar narrow echoes probably establish that 2013 NK4 rotates very slowly, and the shape is bifurcated," said NASA.

According to the observations, asteroid 2013 NK4 is most likely a binary contact, which means the asteroid is made up of two bodies or asteroids which gravitated towards each other till they touched and hence, created the elongated shape.&nbsp;

The researchers looked into the fate of moons, planets and asteroids which will pass close to the white dwarfs by looking into the transits.

The researchers found that around the white dwarf stars, the transits were irregular and highly chaotic, which hinted at the fact that their future is likely to be violent and catastrophic.

Moons, asteroids and planets which come close to the white dwarf's dense core are shredded when they get pulled into smaller pieces by gravity. These pieces eventually get grounded into dust as they collide with one another.

The dust continues to move around the dead star till it eventually disperses out into the universe. This is likely to be the fate of the many celestial bodies in our solar system which are not swallowed or destroyed by the expansion of the sun.

"For the rest of the solar system, some of the asteroids located between Mars and Jupiter, and maybe some of the moons of Jupiter may get dislodged and travel close enough to the eventual white dwarf to undergo the shredding process we have investigated," said Professor Gaensicke.

Meanwhile, Dr Amornrat Aungwerojwit of Naresuan University, Thailand, who headed the study, said: “Previous research had shown that when asteroids, moons and planets get close to white dwarfs, the huge gravity of these stars rips these small planetary bodies into smaller and smaller pieces.”

“Collisions between these pieces eventually grind them into dust, which finally falls into the white dwarf, enabling us to determine what type of material the original planetary bodies were made from," he added.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Dr Amornrat Aungwerojwit of Naresuan University, Thailand, who headed the study, said: “Previous research had shown that when asteroids, moons and planets get close to white dwarfs, the huge gravity of these stars rips these small planetary bodies into smaller and smaller pieces.” “Collisions between these pieces eventually grind them into dust, which finally falls into the white dwarf, enabling us to determine what type of material the original planetary bodies were made from," he added.
