Russia's defence ministry on Thursday (August 10) said that 11 Ukrainian drones were downed near Crimea overnight, as well as two drones which were flying toward the capital Moscow were shot down. "Two UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) flying in the direction of the city of Moscow were destroyed," said the ministry in a statement. "Near the city of Sevastopol, two UAVs were hit by on-duty anti-aircraft defence equipment, another 9 were suppressed by means of electronic warfare and crashed in the Black Sea before reaching the target," it added. The ministry stated that no reports of casualties or damage emerged from any of the affected areas. The strikes take place a day after Russia claimed two Ukrainian combat drones which were moving in the direction of Moscow were shot down, making it the fourth attack that took place near the capital city in a week. However, the Russia-annexed Crimean peninsula has faced several strikes amid the hostilities and has witnessed more frequent attacks in recent weeks. On Saturday, Russia said that a drone was downed over the ocean near Sevastopol, which was the base of its Black Sea fleet. In July, an ammunition depot was blown up by the Ukrainian drone strikes on Crimea and the bridge across the Kerch Strait, which linked Russia's mainland to the peninsula was damaged. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky last month warned that "war" was coming to Russia, as the country's "symbolic centres and military bases" were becoming targets. Air attacks escalate in wake of Kyiv's counteroffensive Since Kyiv started a counteroffensive in June, air attacks have multiplied, though modest advances have been made by the Ukrainian forces on the ground in the face of stiff resistance from troops of Moscow. Russian officials on Wednesday stated that one person lost his life and four others suffered injuries by Ukrainian shelling on the border town of Gorkovsky which is located in the southern Belgorod region, where regular strikes take place. Russia claims 11 Ukrainian drones downed near Crimea, two more heading towards Moscow shot

India has put a ban on domestic military drone manufacturers from using Chinese components.

India puts a ban on use of Chinese drone parts

<p>India in recent months has barred domestic manufacturers of military drones from using components made in China over concerns about security vulnerabilities, according to four defence and industry officials and documents reviewed by Reuters.</p>

<p>The measure comes amid tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbours and as New Delhi pursues a military modernisation that envisages greater use of unmanned quadcopters, long-endurance systems and other autonomous platforms.</p>

<p>But as the nascent Indian industry looks to meet the military's needs, the defence and industry figures said India's security leaders were worried that intelligence-gathering could be compromised by Chinese-made parts in drones' communication functions, cameras, radio transmission and operating software.</p>

<p>Three of these people and some of the six other government and industry figures interviewed by Reuters spoke on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to talk to the media or because of the topic's sensitivity. India's defence ministry did not respond to Reuters questions.</p>

<p>India's approach, reported by Reuters for the first time, complements phased import restrictions on surveillance drones since 2020 and is being implemented through military tenders, documents show.</p>

<p>At two meetings in February and March to discuss drone tenders, Indian military officials told potential bidders that equipment or subcomponents from "countries sharing land borders with India will not be acceptable for security reasons", according to minutes reviewed by Reuters. The minutes did not identify the military officials.</p>

<p>One tender document said such subsystems had "security loopholes" that compromised critical military data, and called for vendors to disclose components' origin.</p>

<p>A senior defence official told Reuters the reference to neighbouring countries was a euphemism for China, adding that Indian industry had become dependent on the world's second-largest economy despite concern about cyberattacks.</p>

<p>Beijing has denied involvement in cyberattacks. China's commerce ministry, which last week announced export controls on some drones and drone-related equipment, did not respond to questions about India's measures.</p>

<p>The U.S. Congress in 2019 banned the Pentagon from buying or using drones and components made in China.</p>

<h2><strong>Manufacturing hurdle</strong></h2>

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought to build India's drone capability to thwart perceived threats, including from China, whose forces have clashed with Indian soldiers along their disputed border in recent years.</p>

<p>India has set aside 1.6 trillion rupees ($19.77 billion) for military modernisation in 2023-24, of which 75 per cent&nbsp;is reserved for domestic industry.</p>

<p>But the ban on Chinese parts has raised the cost of making military drones locally by forcing manufacturers to source components elsewhere, government and industry experts said.</p>

<p>Sameer Joshi, founder of Bengaluru-based NewSpace Research and Technologies, a supplier of small drones for India's military, said 70% of goods in the supply chain were made in China.</p>

<p>"So if I talk to, let's say, a Polish guy, he still has his components which are coming via China," he said.</p>

<p>Switching to a non-Chinese pipeline pushed up costs dramatically, Joshi said, adding that some manufacturers were still importing material from China but would "white-label it, and kind of keep the costs within that frame".</p>

<h2><strong>Technology gaps</strong></h2>

<p>India relies on foreign manufacturers for both parts and entire systems as it lacks the know-how to make certain types of drones.</p>

<p>A government-funded program to produce an indigenous Medium Altitude Long Endurance unmanned system is delayed by at least half a decade, said Y. Dilip, director of the state-run Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE).</p>

<p>The platform, called Tapas, has met most requirements but needs further work to fulfil the military's goal of a drone that can reach an operational altitude of 30,000 feet and remain airborne for 24 hours, Dilip said.</p>

<p>"Primarily we were constrained by the engines," he said, with neither those built domestically nor international models available to India up to the job.</p>

<p>Apart from Tapas, which is expected to begin military trials this month, ADE is working on a stealth unmanned platform and a High Altitude Long Endurance platform, but both are years away.</p>

US drones harassed by 'reckless' Russian fighter jets in Syrian skies for second time in two days

The skies over Syria have witnessed yet another tense moment between Russia and the US. The US Air Force has said that Russian fighter jets flew dangerously close to several US drone aircraft. The United States also added that they forced the MQ-9 Reaper drones to take evasive manoeuvres. At the same time, the US Air Force urged the Russian forces in Syria to seize the reckless behaviour.

Tense Russia-US encounter over the skies of Eastern Syria

In a basement in downtown Kyiv away from prying eyes late last month, crowds of engineers and innovators met senior military officials to brainstorm ways to better neutralise the cheap Russian suicide drones that still devastate Ukrainian cities.

How Ukraine is using tech to counter Russian 'suicide' drone threat

<p>In the past decade, drones have revolutionised almost every space, from military aviation to commercial uses like photography and videography. Their shortcomings, like any other machine, followed by better-updated versions, made the use of drones inevitable in the near future. One such drawback in the usage of drones was that they can tolerate only a certain temperature, rendering them unsuitable for use in several operations, particularly hazardous ones where it would have been very useful and helped save lives&nbsp;and valuable material.</p>

<p>Suppose a building is on fire, with flames coming out of the windows and doors. As the firefighters arrive at the scene, no one knows who is left inside, the layout of the building, the availability of emergency exists and which areas are still safe. To go inside a building with a huge fire can even put firefighters&nbsp;at risk. In such cases, a drone&nbsp;can be of great functionality provided it can withstand extremely high temperatures.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Under a&nbsp;joint project, the Imperial College London and Empa, the material science unit of Swiss Federal Laboratories, have developed a remotely controlled flyer that is capable of enduring the temperatures of a gas flame, simulating the conditions of a forest fire or building-based disaster.</p>

<h2><strong>FireDrone: Helping hand of firefighters?</strong></h2>

<p>The prototype drone, called FireDrone, could be flown into burning buildings or woodland to assess the hazards and provide crucial first-hand data from danger zones. The data would then be sent to first responders to help them in emergency response.<br />
<br />
Principal Investigator Professor Mirko Kovac, Director of the Aerial Robotics Lab at Imperial College London and Head of the Laboratory of Sustainability Robotics at Empa, said: “Until they enter the danger zone, firefighters can’t be certain of what or who they’ll find, and what challenges they’ll encounter.</p>

<p>“FireDrone could be sent in ahead to gather crucial information – noting trapped people, building layouts, unexpected hazards – so that responders can prepare accordingly to keep themselves safe and potentially save more lives."&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Nature-inspired FireDrones</strong></h2>

<p>In the past, drones have been used in firefighting to take aerial footage, host dire hoses up skyscrapers, or drop fire retardants in remote areas to slow the spread of wildfires. However, current drones developed for firefighting are unable to fly much closer to burning material as their frames start to melt and their electronics fail.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To find a solution to this problem, researchers looked to nature for inspiration to devise a means of maintaining a functioning internal temperature in extreme conditions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Deploying robots in extreme environments provides great benefits to reducing risks to human lives, and who better to look to than animals that have evolved their own ways of adapting to these extremes using inspiration from how animals keep cool in the heat,” said Kovac.</p>

<p>Animals like penguins, arctic foxes, and spittlebugs, which live in extreme temperatures, have appropriate layers of fat and fur. Some animals even produce their own layers of<strong> thermo-regulating material</strong> that allow them to thrive in extreme conditions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To create a fire-resistant drone, researchers use the same concept and created a protective structural shell made of lightweight,<strong> thermally super-insulating materials like glass fibres and polyimide aerogel. </strong>They also coated this with super-reflecting aluminium to reflect heat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Within the protective exoskeleton, the researchers placed temperature-sensitive components, such as regular and infrared cameras, CO2 sensors, video transmitters, flight controllers, batteries, and radio receivers. They also used the release and evaporation of gas from the CO2 sensors to build a cooling system to keep temperatures down.</p>

In the past decade, drones have revolutionised almost every space, from military aviation to commercial uses like photography and videography. Their shortcomings, like any other machine, followed by better-updated versions, made the use of drones inevitable in the near future. One such drawback in the usage of drones was that they can tolerate only a certain temperature, rendering them unsuitable for use in several operations, particularly hazardous ones where it would have been very useful and helped save lives and valuable material. Suppose a building is on fire, with flames coming out of the windows and doors. As the firefighters arrive at the scene, no one knows who is left inside, the layout of the building, the availability of emergency exists and which areas are still safe. To go inside a building with a huge fire can even put firefighters at risk. In such cases, a drone can be of great functionality provided it can withstand extremely high temperatures. Also Read | Massive solar flare causes radio blackout in US and Pacific Ocean Under a joint project, the Imperial College London and Empa, the material science unit of Swiss Federal Laboratories, have developed a remotely controlled flyer that is capable of enduring the temperatures of a gas flame, simulating the conditions of a forest fire or building-based disaster. FireDrone: Helping hand of firefighters? The prototype drone, called FireDrone, could be flown into burning buildings or woodland to assess the hazards and provide crucial first-hand data from danger zones. The data would then be sent to first responders to help them in emergency response. Principal Investigator Professor Mirko Kovac, Director of the Aerial Robotics Lab at Imperial College London and Head of the Laboratory of Sustainability Robotics at Empa, said: “Until they enter the danger zone, firefighters can’t be certain of what or who they’ll find, and what challenges they’ll encounter. Also Read | 'Death sentence': Experts warn as world's hottest day ever recorded on 3 July “FireDrone could be sent in ahead to gather crucial information – noting trapped people, building layouts, unexpected hazards – so that responders can prepare accordingly to keep themselves safe and potentially save more lives." Nature-inspired FireDrones In the past, drones have been used in firefighting to take aerial footage, host dire hoses up skyscrapers, or drop fire retardants in remote areas to slow the spread of wildfires. However, current drones developed for firefighting are unable to fly much closer to burning material as their frames start to melt and their electronics fail. To find a solution to this problem, researchers looked to nature for inspiration to devise a means of maintaining a functioning internal temperature in extreme conditions. “Deploying robots in extreme environments provides great benefits to reducing risks to human lives, and who better to look to than animals that have evolved their own ways of adapting to these extremes using inspiration from how animals keep cool in the heat,” said Kovac. Watch | WION Fineprint: Drone trends to watch out for in 2023 × Animals like penguins, arctic foxes, and spittlebugs, which live in extreme temperatures, have appropriate layers of fat and fur. Some animals even produce their own layers of thermo-regulating material that allow them to thrive in extreme conditions. To create a fire-resistant drone, researchers use the same concept and created a protective structural shell made of lightweight, thermally super-insulating materials like glass fibres and polyimide aerogel. They also coated this with super-reflecting aluminium to reflect heat. Within the protective exoskeleton, the researchers placed temperature-sensitive components, such as regular and infrared cameras, CO2 sensors, video transmitters, flight controllers, batteries, and radio receivers. They also used the release and evaporation of gas from the CO2 sensors to build a cooling system to keep temperatures down. Pilot flight of FireDrone The researchers flew the drone in temperature-controlled chambers before exposing it to open flames at a firefighter training facility, showing that it could tolerate temperatures of up to 200 degree Celsius for 10 minutes. Cold temperatures can be just as punishing for electronics, so the team took to a glacier tunnel in Switzerland to test performance in an icy environment. Vladimir Putin says the Russian drone industry could soon be worth $12.25 billion. A plan to boost the production is being worked out, and Putin is betting on the versatility of unmanned aerial vehicles. Late last year, Putin said Russia must increase its output of drones. The Russian President is pushing for the widespread use of drones in military and civilian applications. He ordered a strategy for drone development through 2030. Drones, remote or pre-programmed, have been used extensively in battles. Drones gather intelligence, deliver explosives, and can even launch missiles and fly away. With drones, Russia is hitting targets, crushing morale and draining Ukraine's war chest. Suicide drones can flood combat theatres, and are often dubbed as the poor man's cruise missile. Drones are allowing Russia to avoid putting sophisticated aircraft and pilots at risk. Drones are also helping Russia save expensive, long-range precision missiles.
