<p>According to Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) which manufactures the drone, Heron Mark 2&nbsp;"has a wider and stronger body structure" due to an improved manufacturing process, "allowing for quick and easy maintenance without adding to its weight".</p>

<p>"The drone simply amalgamates into the Intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance matrix of the Indian Air Force," said&nbsp;Wing Commander Pankaj Rana, the commanding officer of the drone squadron which is named "Warden of the North".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Russia's defence ministry on Thursday (August 10) said that 11 Ukrainian drones were downed near Crimea overnight, as well as two drones which were flying toward the capital Moscow were shot down.</p>

<p>"Two UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) flying in the direction of the city of Moscow were destroyed," said the ministry in a statement. "Near the city of Sevastopol, two UAVs were hit by on-duty anti-aircraft defence equipment, another 9 were suppressed by means of electronic warfare and crashed in the Black Sea before reaching the target," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The ministry stated that no reports of casualties or damage emerged from any of the affected areas. The strikes take place a day after Russia claimed two Ukrainian combat drones which were moving in the direction of Moscow were shot down, making it the fourth attack that took place near the capital city in a week.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But as the nascent Indian industry looks to meet the military's needs, the defence and industry figures said India's security leaders were worried that intelligence-gathering could be compromised by Chinese-made parts in drones' communication functions, cameras, radio transmission and operating software.</p>

<p>Three of these people and some of the six other government and industry figures interviewed by Reuters spoke on the condition of anonymity as they were not authorised to talk to the media or because of the topic's sensitivity. India's defence ministry did not respond to Reuters questions.</p>

<p>India's approach, reported by Reuters for the first time, complements phased import restrictions on surveillance drones since 2020 and is being implemented through military tenders, documents show.</p>

<p>At two meetings in February and March to discuss drone tenders, Indian military officials told potential bidders that equipment or subcomponents from "countries sharing land borders with India will not be acceptable for security reasons", according to minutes reviewed by Reuters. The minutes did not identify the military officials.</p>

<p>One tender document said such subsystems had "security loopholes" that compromised critical military data, and called for vendors to disclose components' origin.</p>

<p>A senior defence official told Reuters the reference to neighbouring countries was a euphemism for China, adding that Indian industry had become dependent on the world's second-largest economy despite concern about cyberattacks.</p>

<p>Beijing has denied involvement in cyberattacks. China's commerce ministry, which last week announced export controls on some drones and drone-related equipment, did not respond to questions about India's measures.</p>

<p>The U.S. Congress in 2019 banned the Pentagon from buying or using drones and components made in China.</p>

<h2><strong>Manufacturing hurdle</strong></h2>

<p>Prime Minister Narendra Modi has sought to build India's drone capability to thwart perceived threats, including from China, whose forces have clashed with Indian soldiers along their disputed border in recent years.</p>

<p>India has set aside 1.6 trillion rupees ($19.77 billion) for military modernisation in 2023-24, of which 75 per cent&nbsp;is reserved for domestic industry.</p>

<p>But the ban on Chinese parts has raised the cost of making military drones locally by forcing manufacturers to source components elsewhere, government and industry experts said.</p>

<p>Sameer Joshi, founder of Bengaluru-based NewSpace Research and Technologies, a supplier of small drones for India's military, said 70% of goods in the supply chain were made in China.</p>

<p>"So if I talk to, let's say, a Polish guy, he still has his components which are coming via China," he said.</p>

<p>Switching to a non-Chinese pipeline pushed up costs dramatically, Joshi said, adding that some manufacturers were still importing material from China but would "white-label it, and kind of keep the costs within that frame".</p>

<p>India relies on foreign manufacturers for both parts and entire systems as it lacks the know-how to make certain types of drones.</p>

<p>A government-funded program to produce an indigenous Medium Altitude Long Endurance unmanned system is delayed by at least half a decade, said Y. Dilip, director of the state-run Aeronautical Development Establishment (ADE).</p>

<p>The platform, called Tapas, has met most requirements but needs further work to fulfil the military's goal of a drone that can reach an operational altitude of 30,000 feet and remain airborne for 24 hours, Dilip said.</p>

<p>"Primarily we were constrained by the engines," he said, with neither those built domestically nor international models available to India up to the job.</p>

<p>Apart from Tapas, which is expected to begin military trials this month, ADE is working on a stealth unmanned platform and a High Altitude Long Endurance platform, but both are years away.</p>

<p>Still, Narang said there was little investment in research and development by India's big private-sector companies. Joshi said venture capitalists eschewed military projects because of long lead times and the risk that orders may not eventuate.</p>

<p>The senior defence official said India would need to accept higher costs to boost domestic manufacturing.</p>

<p>"If today I buy equipment from China but I say I want to make it in India, the cost will go up 50 per cent," he said. "We as a nation need to be ready to help the ecosystem build here."</p>

<p>Under a&nbsp;joint project, the Imperial College London and Empa, the material science unit of Swiss Federal Laboratories, have developed a remotely controlled flyer that is capable of enduring the temperatures of a gas flame, simulating the conditions of a forest fire or building-based disaster.</p>

<h2><strong>FireDrone: Helping hand of firefighters?</strong></h2>

<p>The prototype drone, called FireDrone, could be flown into burning buildings or woodland to assess the hazards and provide crucial first-hand data from danger zones. The data would then be sent to first responders to help them in emergency response.<br />

However, current drones developed for firefighting are unable to fly much closer to burning material as their frames start to melt and their electronics fail.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To find a solution to this problem, researchers looked to nature for inspiration to devise a means of maintaining a functioning internal temperature in extreme conditions.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Deploying robots in extreme environments provides great benefits to reducing risks to human lives, and who better to look to than animals that have evolved their own ways of adapting to these extremes using inspiration from how animals keep cool in the heat,” said Kovac.</p>

<p>To create a fire-resistant drone, researchers use the same concept and created a protective structural shell made of lightweight,<strong> thermally super-insulating materials like glass fibres and polyimide aerogel. </strong>They also coated this with super-reflecting aluminium to reflect heat.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Within the protective exoskeleton, the researchers placed temperature-sensitive components, such as regular and infrared cameras, CO2 sensors, video transmitters, flight controllers, batteries, and radio receivers. They also used the release and evaporation of gas from the CO2 sensors to build a cooling system to keep temperatures down.</p>

<h2><strong>Pilot flight of FireDrone</strong></h2>

<p>The researchers flew the drone in temperature-controlled chambers before exposing it to open flames at a firefighter training facility, showing that it could <strong>tolerate temperatures of up to 200 degree Celsius for 10 minutes.</strong>&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cold temperatures can be just as punishing for electronics, so the team took to a glacier tunnel in Switzerland to test performance in an icy environment. The insulation kept the extreme cold from penetrating the components, while the heat generated by the whirring motors and electronics kept the batteries within their operating range.</p>

Before the drone can zoom into burning buildings, and search freezing crevasses for injured ice climbers, the team hopes to improve its versatility and equip it with additional sensors so it can feed more essential information back.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“The application of drones is often limited by environmental factors like temperature. We demonstrate a way to overcome this and are convinced our findings will help to unleash the future power of drones for extreme environments,” said Kovac.</p>

<p>Ukraine, which generally does not confirm attacks it carries out on Russian soil, did not make any immediate comment about the drones which were downed. Earlier, Ukrainian officials emphasised the right of the country to strike any target in response to the invasion of Russia and the war that began in February 2022.</p>

<p>In December, Russia claimed to have shot down drones which were targeted at military air bases in the Ryazan and Saratov regions of western Russia.</p>

<h2><strong>Increasing drone attacks&nbsp;</strong></h2>

<p>As per reports, many drones have flown deep into Russia on several occasions. In February, a UJ-22 crashed 100 kilometres (60 miles) away from Moscow, after which the Russian capital has allegedly been repeatedly approached by Ukrainian drones.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Last month, the Russian capital was jolted by a drone attack, although it suffered only slight damage. The attack was seen as one of the deepest and most daring strikes by Kyiv into Russia.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In that month, it was the second reported strike on Moscow after Russian authorities claimed that the Kremlin was targeted by two drones.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Prehistoric paintings, which were present in hard-to-reach caves, were discovered by archaeologists in Spain in the east of the country with the use of drone technology.</p>

<p>With the help of drones, researchers were able to gather evidence of never-before-seen cave paintings which date back to 5,000- 7,500 years ago, as per a statement issued by a team at the University of Alicante, Spain. The findings of the archaeologists were published last month in the Spanish scientific journal Lucentum.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The project made it easy to inspect the areas which could otherwise be reached only by “opening complex access routes climbing,” read the statement.</p>

<p>The team stated that they were able to find their first results in just a few days after they started flying the drones in a quarry in the Penàguila municipality in Alicante.</p>

<p>“This area is well known for housing numerous groups with prehistoric art,” stated lead author Francisco Javier Molina Hernández, who is also an archaeologist at the University of Alicante, in the statement.</p>

<p>The site was then visited by the climbers and its existence was verified by a huge number of painted figures in different styles, which includes stylised human figures and animals such as goats and deer which appeared to have suffered injuries by arrows, as per the statement.</p>

<p>Hernandez, whom the Spanish press has christened as “Indiana Drones”, worked with two other archaeologists, Ximo Martorell Briz and Virginia Barciela, who were part of the research.</p>

<p>Researchers decided to use drones because “on many occasions, we have risked our lives to access cavities located in rugged geographical areas,” Molina said while speaking to CNN.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Many other caves have never been inspected because they are located in inaccessible areas,” he stated.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The researchers stated that the finding is among the most significant Neolithic rock art sites which have been discovered in recent decades in the Valencia region, due to the large number of figures observed.</p>

<p>Some 36 Iranian-made attack drones launched by Russia were downed, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the country's military claimed on Thursday (May 25). Zelensky alleged that Russia was trying to 'terrorise' Ukraine.</p>

<p>"The enemy continued to terrorise Ukraine by launching 36 Shaheds. None reached their target," Zelensky said in a social media post.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the Moscow-appointed governor in Russian-annexed Crimea said that six drones were shot down or blocked in the region. Russia annexed Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"During the past night, six drones were shot down or blocked ... in different parts of Crimea," Sergei Aksyonov wrote on Telegram, adding "there were no victims or injured".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Regional authorities said 13 people were injured. The area had come under sustained mortar and artillery fire. Russia later claimed that its forces had killed &nbsp;"more than 70 Ukrainian terrorists".</p>

<p>Ukraine has already maintained that it had nothing to do with the attack in Belgorod.</p>

<p>Kapustin, nicknamed "White Rex", is well-known in far-right circles in Russia.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>US nod for $285mn military sale to Ukraine</strong></h2>

<p>The United States meanwhile announced the approval of a $285 million sale of NASAMS air defence system and related equipment. This is likely to boost Ukraine's protection against Russian strikes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Ukraine has an urgent need to increase its capabilities to defend against Russian missile strikes and aircraft," the US Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in a statement. "Acquiring and effectively deploying this capability will enhance Ukraine's ability to defend its people and protect critical national infrastructure."</p>

<p>The sale will support US foreign policy national security goal&nbsp;by "improving the security of a partner country that is a force for political stability and economic progress in Europe," said the agency.</p>

<p>Russia invaded Ukraine in February last year. After sustained territorial gains in first few months of the war, Russian troops had to retreat in the face of Ukrainian counter-offensive.</p>

<p>The West, led by the US has poured in millions of dollars in humanitarian as well as military aid to Ukraine. This has significantly boosted Ukraine's capacity to defend and gain territory.</p>

<p>As per reports, three of these drones hit the port of Sevastopol. The official added that Sevastopol's air defence systems were able to successfully thwart all of the strikes.</p>

<p>"No objects (in Sevastopol) were damaged," the Moscow-installed Sevastopol governor Mikhail Razvozhayev said on Telegram.</p>

<p>To extinguish the fire that broke out, at least twelve police vehicles, nine fire service engines, and five ambulances reached the site of the incident. The factory is run by a US company Edge Autonomy outside of the capital of Latvia.</p>
