The drones, some known as hexacopters, can measure up to eight feet wide and have high-resolution cameras attached to them for manoeuvrability.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Most of the drones were captured carrying consignments of opium and heroin, likely to have been manufactured in Afghanistan. The drugs were often carried in small sacks or Coca-Cola bottles.&nbsp;Apart from drug drones, some carry weapons, including pistols and Chinese-made assault rifles.</p>

<p>Smuggling across Pakistan-India border has been going on for decades but since the first drone was spotted in Punjab in 2019, the menace of drone-drugs has increased exponentially. According to BSF, drones are responsible for 60 per cent of the drug-smuggling in the Indian state in 2023.</p>

<p>The challenge is increasing for security agencies as the drone technology evolves. Previously, drones could be detected through noise or the visibility of their light. However, in recent month, drone models that fly as high as&nbsp;one km and produce little to no noise have made the task difficult for agencies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We just used to be focused on land, but this aerial thing is a new domain for us and it is indeed a challenge.&nbsp;But I believe we will be able to contain this drone menace by next year," said&nbsp;Atul Fulzele, the inspector general of BSF in Punjab.</p>

<p>In recent weeks, the Iran-backed group in Yemen has launched several drones and missiles towards Israel, particularly since the beginning of the war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas and even seized what they called an Israel-linked cargo vessel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The US military said that the Carney, an American destroyer, responded to distress calls and provided assistance following missile and drone launches from Houthi-controlled territory.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Carney detected a missile from the Houthi-controlled area of Yemen which landed near the Bahamas-flagged M/V Unity Explorer. The cargo ship later reported minor damage from another missile from a rebel-held area, reported AFP.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier, M/V Number 9, also reported some damage to the vessel but didn't report any casualties after a missile attack from Yemen. M/V Sophie II, which also has Panama’s flag, said it was struck as well but reported no significant harm.</p>

<p>Local Ukrainian officials have alleged that Russia on Saturday (Nov 25) launched its largest drone attack against the capital of Kyiv since the war started last year in February. Media reports claimed that at least five people were injured.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ukraine's Air Force in a Telegram post noted that "a total of nearly 75 Shahed drones were launched from two directions – Primorsko-Akhtarsk and the Kursk region, Russia. The primary target was the city of Kyiv". The official said that there was a "record number" of drones.</p>

<p>The air force also stated that the air defences intercepted 71 of the Iranian-made drones across six regions of Ukraine, including Kyiv.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Ukraine also said that dozens of residential buildings and over 100 facilities were without power in Kyiv. Ukraine's energy ministry said in a statement that the "large-scale drone attack" cut off power to an overhead line.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"As a result, 77 residential buildings and 120 facilities in the central part of the city lost power," he said, further adding that work was underway to restore service.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

The air force also stated that the air defences intercepted 71 of the Iranian-made drones across six regions of Ukraine, including Kyiv. Chinese scientists develop drone with 'human brain' capable of engaging in 'group chats'

<p>ISRO's Gaganyaan TV-D1 test flight, conducted on Saturday (Oct 21)&nbsp;was done with unprecedented defence asset mobilisation. The operation involved the active participation of the Indian Navy's surface and aerial assets, as the Maritime force was entrusted with capturing and transmitting the mission progress footage and recovering the adrift crew module from the Bay of Bengal and returning it safely to the nearest port, Chennai. Throughout the process of descent of the crew module, its phased parachute deployment, splashdown and recovery operations, Indian Navy's air assets provided continuous live coverage. WION has learnt that the Indian Navy deployed indigenous 'Spotter drones' and the US-origin General Atomics MQ-9B Sea Guardian remotely piloted aircraft as part of this operation.</p>

<p>The TV-D1 test was meant to prove how a crew module (structure carrying the astronauts) could be ejected from a flying rocket, if and when a mishap took place mid-flight. This is similar to how a fighter pilot pulls the ejection handle beneath the seat, in order to bailout from an aircraft that was facing grave malfunction or an imminent crash. Given the thousands of moving parts in a rocket and the very high speeds and altitudes it travels at, errors can build up anytime and rapidly cause a mishap. Therefore, it is crucial to be able to save the astronauts from any imminent catastrophe and at various flight conditions. Saturday's test was about ejecting the crew module, when the rocket was flying at an altitude of 11.9km&nbsp;and a speed of Mach 1.2 (1481kmph).&nbsp;In this mission, the parachutes began to deploy in a phased manner, the crew module began its descent from 16.8km&nbsp;(more than 55,000 feet).&nbsp;</p>

<p>Until five minutes into the mission, the visuals of the parachute deployment and gradual descent were captured by the on-board cameras mounted atop the crew module. However, five minutes into the mission, when the drogue parachutes were released and the main parachutes were deployed, ISRO's live stream began to show never-seen-before infrared visuals of the crew module. The crew module was at an altitude of around 2.5km&nbsp;at that time and the live video was being captured from well above and afar from the crew module. This close monitoring and live-streaming is learnt to have been carried out by the Navy's MQ-9B Sea Guardian Drone, two of which have been leased from the American firm General Atomics. As the events unfolded off the coast of Sriharikota, the live footage was broadcast at the Mission Control Centre of the spaceport.</p>

<p>The MQ-9B Sea Guardian is a remotely piloted aircraft that operates via satellite link. According to General Atomics, this highly sophisticated drone can deliver&nbsp;real-time situational awareness anywhere in the maritime domain, during day or night conditions. Sea Guardian not only integrates the most advanced maritime intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities, but it is also the first remotely piloted aircraft system in its class to enable real-time search and patrol above and below the ocean's surface. The real-time aerial videos streamed by ISRO also show how the aerial platform was flying amid the clouds, while continuously tracking the descent path of the crew module.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In addition to this, there were indigenous hexa-copter 'Spotter drones' that were operating from the decks of the Navy ships, that was part of this operation. "These drones have been built in our Pune facility, with the support of the Indian Navy and nearly 100 of them operate with various classes of ships. They have the unique capability of taking-off and landing vertically, even from a warship that moving at 35kmph. Powered by lithium-ion batteries, these Spotter drones have a flight endurance of 90-120minutes and can operate up to heights of 1kilometre" Captain Nikunj Parashar, Managing Director of&nbsp;Sagar Defence Engineering, the firm that builds the Spotter drones, told WION. <p>Ukraine's Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said that the recent gains made by Ukrainian troops on the southern front can help in pushing the Russians to the annexed Crimean peninsula. He stated that this became possible after the "strategically important" village of Robotyne was liberated by Kyiv in the Zaporizhzhia region.</p>

Russia claims to have thwarted fresh Ukrainian attacks as drones target airfield

<p>Russia on Friday (August 25) said that Ukraine used 42 drones overnight to attack Russia-annexed Crimea, however, all its attempts were thwarted by Moscow's forces.<br />

"Nine UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) were destroyed... over the territory of the Republic of Crimea. 33 UAVs were suppressed by electronic warfare and crashed without reaching the target," wrote Russia's defence ministry on Telegram.<br />
<br />
The ministry did not specify whether they suffered any damage or had any casualties.</p>

<h2><strong>Missile attack in Kaluga</strong></h2>

<p>Earlier, Russia claimed that a missile attack carried out by Ukraine in the Kaluga region, which is southwest of Moscow, was thwarted by its air defences and many drones were also destroyed near Crimea, as no damage or casualties were reported.</p>

"Several UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) were destroyed over the sea in the area of Cape Khersones" in Crimea, wrote Mikhail Razvozhayev, the Moscow-installed governor of Sevastopol on Telegram.<br />
<br />
The Cape is towards the southwest of the Crimea peninsula, close to Sevastopol, where the Black Sea fleet of Russia is present.</p>

India is advancing its drone technologies, the government is focusing on innovative technologies from the private sphere as well to assist the Defence Forces of India and soon first common testing centre for drones will prove that centre would be set up in the South Indian state of Tamil Nadu.
