<p>Huge Durga puja pandals were set up across venues showcasing designs based on a variety of innovative themes including on politics, paintings and iconic monuments.</p>

<p>Pandals were decorated abundantly and lit up colourfully as people came in with families and friends to celebrate the festival.</p>

<p>Ramlila was performed in cities, towns and villages, with actors dressing up as characters from the Ramayan and enacting scenes from the Hindu epic.</p>

<p>But two dreaded criminals took advantage of such a performance in the Haridwar district jail and escaped when Ramlila was being staged.</p>

<p>An incident was reported from Odisha also where gold and silver ornaments worth around Rs 10 lakh were stolen from a Durga Puja pandal at Barundei temple in Jajpur district.</p>

<p>On the occasion, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh performed "Shastra Puja" (worship of weapons) at the Sukna military station in West Bengal, and said the ritual is a "clear indication that if need be, weapons and equipment will be used with full force".</p>

<p>"India has never attacked any country out of hatred or contempt. We fight only when someone insults or tries to harm our integrity and sovereignty; when war is waged against religion, truth and human values. This is what we have inherited. We will continue to preserve this heritage," Singh said in a statement issued by the defence ministry.</p>

<p>"However, if our interests are threatened, we will not hesitate to take a big step. 'Shastra Puja' is a clear indication that if need be, the weapons, equipment will be used with full force," he said.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, the External Affairs Ministry expressed "serious concern" over the reported attack on a pandal and theft at a revered Kali temple in Bangladesh, and requested Dhaka to ensure the safety and security of Hindus, all other minorities and their places of worship.</p>

<p>Addressing the annual Vijayadasahmi rally of the RSS in Nagpur, RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat said India has become stronger and more respected in the world with enhanced credibility in the last few years but sinister conspiracies are testing the country's resolve.</p>

<p>"A country becomes great due to the national character of its people. This year is important as RSS steps into its centenary year," he said.</p>

<p>While addressing the rising inflation across the world, President Murmu said that given India's success in controlling inflation, the world is looking up to New Delhi for global economic growth.</p>

<p>"Inflation at the global level remains a cause for worry. But in India the Government and the Reserve Bank have managed to contain it. The Government has succeeded in protecting the common people from high inflation while also providing a more extensive security cover to the poor. The world looks up to India for global economic growth," she said.</p>

<p>President Murmu, while addressing India's women,&nbsp;said she wants the daughters of India "to move forward" and be able to "face every challenge".</p>

<p>India, despite its advantageous young demographics, has one of the lowest female participation in national workforce among all major economies. The estimated Labour Force Participation Rate (LFPR) for women of age 15 years and above in India was 32.8 per cent in 2021-22. In contrast,&nbsp;the female labour force participation rate in China remained at around 61 per cent.&nbsp;</p>

<p>President Murmu said women are now participating in every sphere for India's development, taking on responsibilities that were not thought of a few decades ago.</p>

<p>"Today, women are contributing extensively in every field of development and service to the country and are enhancing the nation's pride. Today our women have made their special place in many such fields in which their participation was unimaginable a few decades ago," she said.</p>

'World looks up to India for economic growth': President Murmu in her Independence Day address

Amrit Kaal is a period of 100 years of Independence and making of a developed India. These 25 years is a period for all citizens to focus on duty.</p>

<p>"The President described an India without poverty and full of prosperity."That should be an India that will not have poverty, whose middle class will also be prosperous, an India whose youth and women will stand at the front to show a path to society and the country, an India whose youth stays two steps ahead of time," she said. President Murmu also lauded India`s growing position on the world stage and said that the country is providing solutions to the world.</p>

<p>"Today, India`s self-confidence is at its highest and the world is looking at her from a different perspective. India is providing solutions to the world," the President said.This is President Murmu`s first budget session speech since assuming office in July last year.</p>

<p>The President arrived in a ceremonial escort to Parliament to address the joint session at the start of the Budget session. Earlier addressing reporters outside Parliament Prime Minister Narendra Modi said, "Our Finance Minister will present one more Budget before the country tomorrow.</p>

<p>In today`s global circumstances, not only India but the entire world is looking at India`s budget. Amid the unstable global economic situation, India`s Budget will attempt to meet the hopes and aspirations of the common citizens. I firmly believe that Nirmala Sitharaman will make all efforts to meet those aspirations.</p>

<p>"The budget session that began today with the President`s address will take place in 27 sittings till April 6 with a month-long recess to examine the budget papers. The first part of the session will conclude on February 13. Parliament will reconvene on March 12 for the second part of the Budget Session and will conclude on April 6.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Bollywood's yesteryear star Asha Parekh has been named as the recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke award this year. The award is considered the highest honour for a cinema artist in India. Interestingly among the 52 past winners of the prestigious award, only 6 have been women and Parekh is the 7th woman to have been honoured with the award.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She is also the second woman after Asha Bhosle to get the award since the dawn of the 2000s. Ironically, despite the limited representation of women in the roster of awardees, Devika Rani was the first to get it in 1969 - the year the award was created.&nbsp;<br />

Other women who have received this honour include Ruby Myers (Sulochana) in 1973, Kanan Devi (1976), Durga Khote (1983) and Lata Mangeshkar (1989). Asha Bhosle got the award in 2000.</p>

<p>Parekh started her career as a child artiste in 1952 when aged 10 and studied while working in films. She quit films after doing five films to concentrate on her studies only to return a few years later as a leading lady of Hindi cinema.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After a major disappointment when she was rejected for a big-ticket film (Vijay Bhatt`s "Goonj Uthi Shehnai", 1959) as she was not "star material", she made her name in 'Dil Deke Dekho' (1959), which was among the first of Shammi Kapoor from his swinging era.<br />

Parekh became a favourite of filmmaker Nasir Hussain, who went to cast her in six successful films across the next decade- from 'Jab Pyar Kisi Se Hota Hai' (1961) to 'Caravan' (1971).</p>

<p>Mostly portrayed as a glamorous, even tomboyish, figure, with some notable exceptions, Parekh not only became a leading actress -- among the highest paid of her time -- but also was a style icon with her choice of clothes and elegant coiffure.</p>

<p>Paired with most of the leading heroes of her time, Parekh will be particularly remembered for her onscreen chemistry with Shammi Kapoor, particularly in 'Teesri Manzil' (1966), be it the energetic jiving in 'Aaja aaja, main hoon pyar tera' or 'O Haseena zulfonwali jaan-e-jahan', the heartfelt request in 'O Mere Sona Re', or the smouldering emotional intensity on both sides of "Tumne mujhe dekha hokar meherbaan".<br />

<p>'Yeh Shaam Mastani', 'Pyar Deewana Hota Hai' and 'Yeh Jo Mohabbat Hai' capture Rajesh Khanna in an ebullient mood, but Parekh's 'Na Koi Umang Hai' is an apt portrayal of her character's plight. Not surprisingly, her acting fetched her the Filmfare Award for Acting.</p>

<p>By the middle of the 1970s, a new crop of actresses was emerging and Parekh had to move to doing character roles -- she played Amitabh Bachchan`s sister-in-law in 'Kaalia' (1981) -- but she admitted later that she did not enjoy them much and slowly began restricting her appearances.</p>

<p>Still, she did not fade away entirely and was seen till the mid-1990s when she decided to concentrate more on her avatar as TV producer.</p>

<p>Parekh will soon be feted with the Lifetime Achievement honour for her contribution to cinema by President Droupadi Murmu.</p>

<p>Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Singh Thakur took to his Twitter to announce the honour for the actress.</p>

<p>He tweeted, "Honoured to announce that the Dadasaheb Phalke Selection Jury has decided to recognise &amp; award Asha Parekh ji for her exemplary lifetime contribution to Indian Cinema. The Dadasaheb Phalke Award shall be presented by the Hon President of India at 68th NFA in Vigyan Bhawan (sic)."</p>

<p>Raju Srivastav, 58, was in the entertainment industry since the 1980s and shot to fame after participating in the first season of the reality stand-up comedy show 'The Great Indian Laughter Challenge'&nbsp;in 2005. He is survived by his wife and two children.<br />

Apart from President Murmu and Delhi's CM Arvind Kejriwal, other political leaders such as Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, and Akhilesh Yadav among others have also paid condolences over the demise of Raju Srivastav.&nbsp;<br />

<p><strong>Who is Murmu?</strong></p>

<p>The 64-year-old Murmu hails from India’s poorest but resource-rich state of Odisha. She spent her childhood in Mayurbhanj district and used to work as a teacher.</p>

<p>She earlier served as the governor of Jharkhand from 2015 to 2021. She was the longest-serving governor of the mineral-rich state which came into existence in 2000.</p>

<p>Her political journey began when she was elected as a&nbsp;councillor from Rairangpur in 1997. She then contested successfully on BJP tickets and became&nbsp;MLA from Rairangpur in 2000 and then in 2009.</p>

<p>From 2000 to 2002, the 64-year-old was made minister of state with independent charge for Commerce and Transport in the Odisha government, which was run by a coalition of BJP and the regional party BJD. Then from 2002 and 2004, she was given the Fisheries and Animal Resources Development portfolio.</p>

<p>She had also served as the vice-president of BJP’s Scheduled Tribes Morcha in Odisha between 2006 and 2009 and was elected party president in the Mayurbhanj district several times.</p>
