Donald Trump has nominated two controversial figures for key roles. The US president-elect has picked Tulsi Gabbard, the Democrat turned Republican who questioned US intelligence, to lead the same department. His other pick is firebrand lawmaker Matt Gaetz, whom he nominated as his pick for attorney general. The Congressman is a staunch defender of the president-elect and a vocal critic of what he calls “weaponised” government.

<h2>Who is Tulsi Gabbard?</h2>

Gabbard is a former Democrat and military veteran known for her outspoken anti-interventionist views, and she’s been tapped to lead US intelligence. She has direct experience with war, having served in Iraq with the Army National Guard of her native Hawaii.

As per AFP, Gabbard’s journey to this appointment has been anything but conventional. A Democrat-turned-Republican, she has built a reputation as an establishment sceptic, often at odds with both parties. Gabbard has spoken against US intelligence findings in the past, notably questioning presidents, including Trump, on reports like the one on chemical attacks in Syria, and has condemned what she views as America’s “regime change wars.”

<h2>Who is Matt Gaetz?</h2>

Congressman Matt Gaetz, Trump's pick for the US Attorney General, is known for his fierce loyalty to Trump and is believed to have been well-placed to make good on Trump's threats of revenge against political foes.

Posting on social media, the US president-elect wrote, “Few issues in America are more important than ending the partisan Weaponisation of our Justice System. Matt will end Weaponised Government… and restore Americans' badly shattered Faith and Confidence in the Justice Department.”

A US congressman since 2017, he is among Trump's most controversial picks.
&nbsp;
While Trump touts him as a bold choice to “restore faith” in the Justice Department, Gaetz is no stranger to legal and ethical troubles and has an unresolved House ethics investigation. He is allegedly involved in a Justice department — which he will now head — probe into sex trafficking and obstruction of justice.

Gaetz has dismissed the probe as a “political payback exercise” and “uncomfortably nosy.”

Scepticism about his nomination remains high. According to a CNN report, citing unnamed sources, there was “an audible gasp” when House Republicans meeting behind closed doors were informed of Gaetz's nomination.

Some senators have already expressed doubts. Speaking to Scripps News, Republican Party's Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski said: “Do you think he's a serious candidate? Not as far as I'm concerned.”

While another Senator, Susan Collins, said she was “shocked” by the announcement.

Part-time first lady? These are Melania Trump's plans for her Trump 2.0 White House return

Mike Johnson on Wednesday (Nov 13) secured the nomination to remain in his role as the Republican House Speaker, after an endorsement from US President-elect Donald Trump ahead of a full House vote in January.

While Johnson secured the nomination with a voice vote in a closed-door session, the real test will come when he needs to secure the full House vote of 218 members in January.

Johnson faces no serious challengers, however, dissent within the ranks, particularly from hard-right conservatives, can pose a problem. As per the Guardian, members of the Freedom Caucus are withholding their votes as leverage to demand promises from Johnson.

President-elect Donald Trump may try to stop a looming ban on popular Chinese app TikTok, which faces a January deadline to secure non-Chinese ownership or risk losing access to US users.

<h2>Why would Trump block the TikTok ban?</h2>

Trump is yet to announce a decision on if or how he would intervene on TikTok's behalf if necessary.

Previously, in June, he said: “I’m gonna save TikTok,” in one of his first videos on TikTok.
&nbsp;
As per a Washington Post report citing people familiar with the matter, Trump “appreciates the breadth and reach of TikTok, which he used masterfully along with podcasts and new media entrants to win.”

Kellyanne Conway, who ran Trump’s first presidential campaign, said, “There are many ways to hold China to account outside alienating 180 million US users each month. Trump recognised early on that Democrats are the party of bans — gas-powered cars, menthol cigarettes, vapes, plastic straws and TikTok — and to let them own that draconian, anti-personal-choice space.”

<h2>Why was TikTok being banned?</h2>

The potential ban was driven by bipartisan national security concerns over China’s influence, and some of Trump’s advisors believe he could intervene to save the platform, a move which would mark a significant shift in US policy on TikTok.

The law targeting TikTok requires its Chinese owner, ByteDance, to divest by 19 January, just one day before Trump’s inauguration.

Trump could seek to delay or block enforcement of this law, possibly by leveraging legislative changes or urging his administration’s attorney general to de-prioritise enforcement. The incoming administration may also consider ByteDance’s earlier proposal, “Project Texas,” which would grant the US government significant control over TikTok’s operations, including its workforce, as a potential compromise to avoid a ban.

While the Joe Biden administration had rejected the proposal, TikTok owner ByteDance previously said that the offer was still on the table.

However, such a move would likely provoke resistance from national security hawks within Trump’s own party, including his pick for Secretary of State, Senator Marco Rubio, who has strongly advocated for a TikTok ban.

Could Trump save TikTok? President-elect might try to block US ban, say allies: Report

US President-elect Donald Trump, who is set to re-enter the White House after beating the Democrat Kamala Harris in the 2024 presidential election has started selecting key members of his cabinet. The former president picked Republican Representative Mike Waltz as his national security adviser, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters on Monday (Nov 11).

Waltz has been a Trump loyalist and has served in the National Guard as a colonel. He has been a critic of Chinese activity in the Asia-Pacific and has voiced the need for the United States to be ready for a potential conflict in the region.

Waltz will be responsible for briefing Trump on key national security issues and coordinating with different agencies.

As per a CNN reporter's post on X on Monday (Nov 11), Trump is also expected to tap immigration adviser Stephen Miller as White House deputy chief of staff for policy.&nbsp;

Miller's appointment would place the architect of Trump's restrictive first-term immigration agenda in a top position.

Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-women-begin-matga-movement-after-trumps-victory-fantasize-poisoning-men-775348">US women begin ‘MATGA’ movement after Trump’s victory, fantasise poisoning men</a>

Miller was a White House senior adviser for policy during Trump's 2017-2021 presidency and the driving force behind the Republican's wide-ranging immigration crackdown. Policies included the construction of a wall on the US - Mexico border, banning people from certain Muslim-majority nations and elsewhere, and a contentious 2018 border policy that separated thousands of migrant families.

Trump, who takes office in January, said in a social media post that the former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from his first administration would be in charge of the country's borders in his new administration starting Jan&nbsp;20.

The president-elect made cracking down on illegal immigration the central element of his campaign, promising mass deportations. He is expected to mobilise agencies across the US government to help him deport record number&nbsp;of immigrants in an operation that Vice President-elect JD Vance has said could remove an estimated 1 million people per year.

<h2>US Senator Marco Rubio</h2>

Further, Trump selected US Senator Marco Rubio to be his secretary of state, sources said in November, putting the Florida-born politician on track to be the first Latino to serve as America's top diplomat once the Republican president-elect takes office in January.

Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/trump-chooses-elise-stefanik-as-us-ambassador-to-un-in-his-second-term-775331">Trump chooses Elise Stefanik as US ambassador to UN in his second term</a>

Rubio was arguably the most hawkish option on Trump's shortlist for secretary of state, and he has in past years&nbsp;advocated for a muscular foreign policy concerning America's geopolitical foes, including China, Iran and Cuba.

However, over the last few&nbsp;years he has softened some of his stances to align more closely with Trump's views. The president-elect accuses past US presidents of leading America into costly and futile wars and has pushed for a more restrained foreign policy.

The new administration will confront a world more volatile and dangerous than it was when Trump took office in 2017, with wars raging in Ukraine and the Middle East and China aligning itself more closely with US foes Russia and Iran.

<h2>Ukraine Crisis High on Rubio's Agenda</h2>

The 53-year-old has said in recent interviews that Ukraine needs to seek a negotiated settlement with Russia rather than focus on regaining all territory that Russia has taken in the last decade.&nbsp;

He was also one of the 15 Republican senators to vote against a $95 billion military aid package for Ukraine, which was passed in April this year.&nbsp;

By selecting Rubio for a key policy role, Trump may help consolidate gains among Latinos and make clear that they have a place at the highest levels of his administration.

As per a CNN reporter's post on X on Monday (Nov 11), Trump is also expected to tap immigration adviser Stephen Miller as White House deputy chief of staff for policy. Miller's appointment would place the architect of Trump's restrictive first-term immigration agenda in a top position. Also read | US women begin ‘MATGA’ movement after Trump’s victory, fantasise poisoning men Miller was a White House senior adviser for policy during Trump's 2017-2021 presidency and the driving force behind the Republican's wide-ranging immigration crackdown. Policies included the construction of a wall on the US - Mexico border, banning people from certain Muslim-majority nations and elsewhere, and a contentious 2018 border policy that separated thousands of migrant families. Trump, who takes office in January, said in a social media post that the former acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from his first administration would be in charge of the country's borders in his new administration starting Jan 20. The president-elect made cracking down on illegal immigration the central element of his campaign, promising mass deportations. He is expected to mobilise agencies across the US government to help him deport record number of immigrants in an operation that Vice President-elect JD Vance has said could remove an estimated 1 million people per year. US Senator Marco Rubio Further, Trump selected US Senator Marco Rubio to be his secretary of state, sources said in November, putting the Florida-born politician on track to be the first Latino to serve as America's top diplomat once the Republican president-elect takes office in January. Also read | Trump chooses Elise Stefanik as US ambassador to UN in his second term Rubio was arguably the most hawkish option on Trump's shortlist for secretary of state, and he has in past years advocated for a muscular foreign policy concerning America's geopolitical foes, including China, Iran and Cuba. However, over the last few years he has softened some of his stances to align more closely with Trump's views. Ukraine Crisis High on Rubio's Agenda The 53-year-old has said in recent interviews that Ukraine needs to seek a negotiated settlement with Russia rather than focus on regaining all territory that Russia has taken in the last decade. By selecting Rubio for a key policy role, Trump may help consolidate gains among Latinos and make clear that they have a place at the highest levels of his administration. Russia and Ukraine exchange record drone strikes despite Trump-Putin call

Vivek Ramaswamy, the former Republican presidential contender turned aide to President-elect Donald Trump has voiced strong support for Trump's proposed mass deportation of undocumented immigrants.

The Indian-American entrepreneur emphasising the need to enforce immigration laws to restore order said that the United States' legal immigration system was “broken”.

<h2>A 'broken' system</h2>

In an interview with ABC News, Ramaswamy argued that those who entered the US illegally, particularly in recent years, do not have the right to remain.

“Do we have a broken legal immigration system? Yes, we do. But I think the first step is going to be to restore the rule of law, to do it in a very pragmatic way,” said Ramaswamy.

“Those who have committed a crime should be out of this country. That is by the millions. That alone would be the largest mass deportation. Combine that with ending government aid for all illegals. You see self-deportations,” he added.

<h2>Trump and Ramaswamy</h2>

Once a rival in the Republican primaries, Ramaswamy has emerged as a close ally to Trump. He told ABC News that he was having “high impact” discussions about his future role within the Trump administration.

"There's a couple great options on the table. I want to have the biggest possible impact on this country. We're not going to sort that out in the press… we're having some high-impact discussions."

Speaking of Trump’s victory, Ramaswamy said, “I think he cares about uniting the country. I think that is Donald Trump's number one focus,” he said.

“He's also learned a lot from that first term, and I think he's going into this second term even to take to new heights some of the things he wasn't able to accomplish in the first term, which I think is going to be a good thing,”

He said that Trump’s focus on challenging the “deep state” has struck a chord across a broad base.

“Here's a big one. And Donald Trump talked for a long time about the deep state. But this idea of restoring self-governance is big in this new coalition. The idea that the people we elect to run the government, they haven't been the ones actually running the government for a very long time.”

“Donald Trump is going to be the president of the United States in the real sense of that word. Capital P president where he is actually making the decisions with the democratic will of the people behind him, not the unelected bureaucratic class underneath him,” he added.

He urged even Trump’s critics to give him a chance, asserting that many would be “pleasantly surprised” by positive changes under the administration.

“A lot of people across the country, even those who have bought into some false narratives about Donald Trump, are going to be pleasantly surprised to find more money in their paychecks, prices coming down in the country, and a secure border. Those are things most Americans actually care about.”

US President-elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin recently engaged in their first post-election call, according to reports.

According to a Washington Post report citing sources familiar with the conversation, on Thursday (Nov 7), the two leaders discussed the war in Ukraine and also touched on the goal of achieving peace in Europe.

However, the Kremlin has denied the report. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told journalists that the Washington Post report was “simply false information”.

Reportedly, the call, conducted from Trump’s Florida resort, saw the Republican warn Russian President Putin against escalating the conflict while reminding him of “Washington's sizeable military presence in Europe”.

Trump reportedly voiced interest in further talks to discuss “the resolution of Ukraine’s war soon”, echoing his campaign pledge to end the conflict quickly.

While Trump has yet to clarify specific steps towards achieving this, the leader, known for his transactional approach to foreign policy, has privately suggested he might support a peace settlement involving concessions from Ukraine.

<h2>World leaders calling Trump directly</h2>

Since his election win on Nov 7, Trump said he has already talked to over 70 world leaders. However, as per the report, contrary to the protocol, he is conducting these calls independently. The Trump transition team is yet to sign an agreement with the General Services Administration — a standard procedure for presidential transitions — and has refrained from engaging the State Department for these conversations.

This is because distrust of career officials, especially after transcripts of calls from his previous term were leaked, has led Trump's team to bypass standard protocols. Instead, world leaders are “just calling [Trump] directly,” noted a person familiar with the calls.

Trump has also spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, a call reportedly joined by Elon Musk. While the tone was friendly, Ukrainian officials have expressed concern about Trump’s intentions regarding continued support for Kyiv. Trump has been vocal about the burden of US funding for Kyiv, suggesting that peace may come with difficult compromises — like Ukraine giving up some of its territory such as Crimea to Russia.

Kremlin denies reports of Trump-Putin call, warning against escalating Ukraine war

US President-elect Donald Trump on Sunday (Nov 10) demanded that Republican senators allow him to bypass the Senate confirmation process for key appointments. This, as per reports, aims to sidestep Democratic opposition and maintain momentum for his administration.

Trump made the demand on social media platform X (previously known as Twitter), stressing that any Republican senator vying for leadership must support the use of recess appointments to confirm his nominations without a Senate vote.

<h2>What is the usual process?</h2>

Under the US Constitution, the Senate typically holds the power to approve presidential appointments for senior positions, such as cabinet roles and judicial appointments. However, a provision allows presidents to bypass this process if the Senate is in an extended recess.

Historically, the Senate has used various tactics to avoid prolonged recesses to protect its influence over such nominations, reports AFP.

Trump, referring to the delays during his first term, stated that the Senate must avoid lengthy confirmation processes that could take years. He argued that “Any Republican Senator seeking the coveted LEADERSHIP position in the United States Senate must agree to Recess Appointments (in the Senate!), without which we will not be able to get people confirmed in a timely manner.”

This meeting in the Oval Office is planned for 11:00 am (local time), with the weeks left for Trump’s return to office in January. US Presidential Election 2024: Joe Biden invites Donald Trump to White House for smooth transfer of power

A single post by the winner of the 2024 United States presidential election Donald Trump on Truth Social boosted the stock value of his media company, Trump Media and Technology Group, increasing his net worth by approximately $500 million, CNN reported.

Earlier, Trump Media’s stock had been declining following an initial spike after his election victory earlier in the week. By the time the market opened on Friday, the stock had dropped 42 per cent from its peak on Wednesday.

In the stock market, it’s common for traders to buy shares ahead of a favourable event for a company, only to sell afterwards to secure their profits. This pattern was playing out with Trump Media until the former president intervened.

On Friday (Nov 8), when the stock was falling again, Trump took to his social media platform and said he had no plans to sell his shares in the company. "There are fake, untrue, and probably illegal rumours and/or statements made by, perhaps, market manipulators or short sellers, that I am interested in selling shares of Truth," the former president wrote.&nbsp;

Following his post, the stock rebounded, climbing almost 15 per cent by the end of the day (Nov 8). As the company’s largest shareholder, Trump owns around 114.75 million shares, which rose in value from $3.2 billion to $3.7 billion after the rally. Over the week, however, Trump Media’s stock had only gained about 4.4 per cent.

In the lead-up to the election, while Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris were closely matched in most polls, betting markets leaned towards the Republican, leading investors to invest heavily in assets they believed would be influenced by his leadership.

This optimism fueled a roughly 200 per cent surge in Trump Media stock over the six weeks before the election. Earlier this year, in September, Trump said that he wouldn’t be selling his shares or leaving the platform he created.

With nearly 115 million shares, Trump holds about 53 per cent of Trump Media, which brought his stake’s worth to around $3.7 billion at Friday’s stock price, while the total market cap of the company was close to $7 billion.

Elon Musk took part in a phone call between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President-elect Donald Trump after his election victory, a senior Ukrainian official told AFP Friday (Nov 8).

Elon Musk took part in a phone call between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President-elect Donald Trump after his election victory, a senior Ukrainian official told AFP Friday (Nov 8). "I confirm it," the presidency official who asked to remain anonymous told AFP, saying that the claim in a report by US news site Axios about the call on Wednesday was accurate. Musk, the world's richest man, played a major role in the Republican campaign, spending over $110 million of his fortune to help get him elected. Trump has said he aims to include Musk in some form of advisory role in his upcoming government. His presence during an official call underlines his close ties to the next US president. Also read | Pentagon officials brace for illegal orders from Donald Trump: Reports Another high-ranking Ukrainian source told AFP that Musk was physically present with Trump during the call. Musk "wasn't on the line, Trump gave him the phone. They were there together somewhere," the source said. Zelensky "thanked him (Musk) for the Starlinks, they talked briefly," the source said, referring to the satellite internet devices used by Ukrainian troops as they fight a Russian invasion. "But the main conversation was of course with Trump," the source added, while saying he and Zelensky "didn't discuss anything substantial, it was just a greeting conversation". Zelensky congratulates Trump Zelensky earlier said that he and Trump shared an "excellent" call, where he congratulated the Republican on his "tremendous victory" and they agreed to "maintain close dialogue and advance our cooperation". He did not mention speaking to Musk. When contacted by AFP, Trump's team declined to confirm the Tesla boss's participation in the call, saying they would not discuss private conversations. Axios reported, citing two sources, that the call lasted some 25 minutes and left Zelensky somewhat reassured by what he heard from Trump, without giving specifics. Also read | 'Money's not an issue': Man charged in Trump's assassination attempt revealed Iran army's plan Zelensky said after the call that "strong and unwavering US leadership" under Trump was "vital" for a "just peace". Trump has repeatedly boasted that he could end the war in Ukraine in 24 hours and criticised American aid to Kyiv in its fight against Russia. Washington has been a key military backer of Ukraine and many in Ukraine are worried that Trump will not give the same level of support -- or that he could back a peace settlement to Russia's advantage. On Thursday Zelensky said it would be "unacceptable" for Europe to offer the Kremlin concessions to halt its invasion of Ukraine after Moscow demanded the West enter direct talks on ending the war. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday hailed Trump as "courageous" for the way he handled himself following an assassination attempt at a rally in July, and said he was "ready" to hold discussions with him. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba told reporters Thursday he had held a phone call with US president-elect Donald Trump and "in a nutshell, he was very friendly".

'Not my President': Protests erupt in Philadelphia, Chicago after Trump’s decisive win against Harris

Republican nominee Donald Trump on Tuesday (Nov. 5) created history by becoming only the second President in US history to win non-consecutive terms. The 79-year-old also created history by becoming the only convicted felon to be elected president of the United States.

<h2>Donald Trump a criminal?</h2>

Trump has some serious criminal charges to his name, including federal ones, and has been found guilty on 34 felony counts. This includes charges of falsifying business records to conceal a $130,000 hush money payment made to porn star Stormy Daniels&nbsp;so as to influence the outcome of the 2016 election.

While he was found guilty in May 2024, his sentencing originally set for July 11 has been postponed, and remains pending.

He is also facing four federal charges in the&nbsp;federal election interference case for undermining the 2020 election results, including conspiracy to defraud America, and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding.
&nbsp;
Now that he is the President-elect, a question that comes to mind is, will he self-pardon himself?

<h2>Will presidential immunity apply to Trump?</h2>

The US Supreme Court in Nixon v. Fitzgerald (1982) ruled that US presidents have “absolute immunity” from civil damages for official actions taken while in office. However, this immunity does not apply to criminal investigations or persecution.

Technically, this immunity does not apply to Trump's convictions on charges of hush money or retaining official US government documents after his term.

<h2>Will Trump self-pardon?</h2>

The US Constitution grants the president the power to issue pardons for federal offences. This power to “grant Reprieves and Pardons for Offenses against the United States, except in Cases of Impeachment” is granted by the constitution's Article II, Section 2.

Now, whether he can self-pardon or not is a topic of debate. Legal scholars have long debated the constitutionality of self-pardons, and no president has ever attempted it.

Given how unpredictable Trump is, whether he will be the first US president to attempt self-pardon remains to be seen.

Donald Trump secures win in Arizona, Alaska; Republican locks 312+ electoral votes

Shares in leading European clean energy companies took a sharp dive on November 6, following Donald Trump's resounding victory in the US presidential election. This happened as investors grew concerned about the future of US renewable energy policies under a second Trump administration, according to a detailed report by Reuters.

Trump has earlier expressed intentions to roll back climate policies, including leaving the Paris Agreement. He has also discussed about the undoing of President Biden's signature Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which provides significant incentives for clean energy development, apart for this he also vowed to halt offshore wind projects through executive orders, casting doubt on the future of the critical renewable energy sectors in the US, the Reuters report explained further.

Due to these developments, stocks in leading European clean energy firms corrected significantly. Danish offshore wind giant Ørsted (ORSTED.CO) saw its shares drop by up to 14 per cent, whereas wind turbine manufacturers Vestas (VWS.CO) and Nordex (NDXG.DE) lost 11 per cent and 7.6 per cent, respectively.

Uncertainty is back for the US renewable energy sector <o:p></o:p>

Alphavalue analyst Pierre-Alexandre Ramondenc stated that the election result reintroduced significant uncertainty into the market. "The key message is that uncertainty is back," he stated, the Reuters report explained further.

The US renewable energy sector is crucial for many European utility companies, including Portugal’s EDP Renováveis (EDPR.LS), Ørsted, and Germany’s RWE (RWEG.DE), all of which have substantial operations in the country.

Deutsche Bank analysts indicated that a full repeal of the IRA would depend on the US Congress, but changes to the law could still disrupt planned projects, particularly those that are still years away from completion.

Despite the market downturn, companies like Ørsted and Vestas remained optimistic about long-term US growth. Both firms had stated prior to the election that they expected US demand for clean energy would persist regardless of the election outcome.

Angelo Meda, head of equities at Banor SIM in Milan, defended the sharp decline in Ørsted's share price as an "overreaction," explaining that the shift toward green energy was unlikely to be reversed entirely. He further added that he saw the dip as a buying opportunity.

Nordex, another wind turbine maker, acknowledged potential delays in project timelines but remained hopeful about continued growth in the US onshore wind market.

Other notable declines included shares of RWE, which dropped 6.6 per cent, and EDP Renovaveis, which saw an 11 per cent slump. The iShares Global Clean Energy ETF (INRG.L) also saw a 6 per cent decrease, reaching its lowest level since mid-2020.

Despite these concerns, analysts are divided on the potential long-term impact of Trump's presidency on the clean energy transition. Some view it as a temporary setback, while others warn of more significant disruptions ahead.

This year, over four million voters cast their votes before Election Day in Georgia. (With inputs from agencies)

The United States will continue its friendly approach towards Taiwan after the presidential election and Taiwan will work to prevent China from "making trouble" during the transition, a senior Taiwanese security official said on Wednesday.

Donald Trump, the Republican candidate for the U.S. presidency and neck and neck in the polls with Democrat Vice President Kamala Harris, has made comments on the campaign trail that Taiwan should pay to be protected and also accused the island of stealing American semiconductor business.

Democratically-governed Taiwan, which China views as its own territory, has faced a sustained military pressure campaign from Beijing over the past five years, including four major rounds of war games in the past two years.

Speaking to reporters in parliament, Taiwan National Security Bureau Director-General Tsai Ming-yen noted the election's outcome was still unknown.

Taiwan will continue communication with the current administration focusing on key issues for cooperation "in the next phase" and work with international partners to exchange information on China's intentions and military movements during the transition, Tsai added.

"This is as to prevent the Chinese communists from taking advantage of the transition of the U.S. government and to prevent them from making trouble during the transition," he said.

A caravan of approximately 3,000 migrants set off on Tuesday from southern Mexico, headed toward the United States on the day when U.S. voters were deciding between U.S. presidential candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump.

Immigration has been a key issue in the U.S. election campaign.

Before heading northward, the migrants gathered in Tapachula, the capital of the southern Chiapas state, carrying banners with messages such as "NO MORE MIGRANT BLOOD" and images of the Virgin of Guadalupe, an important religious and cultural symbol in Mexico, according to Reuters witnesses.

"We want U.S. authorities to see us, to see that we are people who want to work, not to harm anyone," said Honduran migrant Roy Murillo, who joined the caravan with his two children and his pregnant wife.

In recent years, several caravans with people hoping to enter the United States have attempted to reach the U.S.-Mexican border, traveling in mass groups for safety. Most have dispersed along the way.

"I'm afraid to travel alone with my family. Here, the cartels either kidnap you or kill you. ... That's why we're coming in the caravan," Murillo said.

Murillo recounted his unsuccessful attempts to secure an asylum appointment through a mobile app developed by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection agency.

Tapachula, a mandatory crossing point for tens of thousands of migrants, has become one of Mexico's most violent cities in recent months, with migrants frequently targeted by organized crime, according to official data.

"I feel suffocated here. That's why we decided to leave," said 28-year-old Venezuelan migrant Thais, who spoke on condition that her surname not be used due to safety concerns.

She joined the caravan with her husband and 3-year-old daughter.

Migrant caravan of 3,000 heads to US amid key presidential election between Harris and Trump

US election 2024: While the final results of the 2024 US Presidential elections are hours, if not days away, the first preliminary exit poll results are out. Exit poll results released by Edison Research show that Democratic Party nominee Kamala Harris has a slight edge over her competitor, Republican Donald Trump.

It also shows that nearly three-quarters of the voters believe that America's democracy was under threat.

<h2>Trump vs Harris: First preliminary exit polls</h2>

Both the White House race contenders, as per the preliminary exit poll results, are seeing a dip in their favourability, compared to 2020.

44 per cent of the voters — down from 46 per cent in 2020 — said they view Donald Trump favourably. Meanwhile, 48 per cent of the voters — down from 52 per cent that viewed the-then Democrat nominee Joe Biden favourably in 2020 — said they view Kamala Harris favourably.&nbsp; &nbsp;

<h2>Issues that matter: First preliminary exit polls</h2>

As per the poll, democracy (33 per cent) and the US economy (33 per cent) are by far the most important issues for voters. These are followed by abortion (14 per cent) and immigration (11 per cent).

While 73 per cent of the voters voiced their concern about the democracy being in jeopardy, only 25 per cent said it was secure.

Similarly, exit polls from CNN, AP and NBC show that for more than a third of voters, democracy was the top issue, followed by the economy (about 30 per cent of voters), abortion rights (about 14 per cent), and immigration (about 14 per cent). At the same time, foreign policy was a minor concern, with less than 10 per cent saying it as a top issue.

For Harris supporters, democracy was their top issue, followed by abortion rights. Trump voters ranked the economy as their highest concern, followed by immigration for 20 per cent and democracy for 10 per cent.

Harris voters said it was most important to have a leader with good judgment and someone who cares about people. Trump voters prefer someone who has the ability to lead or can bring about needed change. Good judgment and someone who cares were in single digits for Trump voters.

‘Nice come back story,’ ‘best meme’: Kangana Ranaut reacts to Donald Trump’s victory

Abortion rights are a major issue in the 2024 United States presidential&nbsp;elections and former president and&nbsp;Republican&nbsp;nominee Donald Trump does not wanna talk about it.

On Tuesday (Nov 5), aka Election Day, when asked twice by reporters about how he voted on Florida's abortion ballot, Trump got testy and snapped at a reporter: “Stop talking about that”.

<h2>Florida's abortion ballot</h2>

Florida is one of ten states that have an abortion on the ballot&nbsp;this election.

Voters, along with voting for the next US president, will also&nbsp;closely watch the abortion rights amendment in Florida.

If passed, Florida's Amendment 4 would overturn the state’s stringent six-week ban and bar the state from enacting any restrictions on abortion until a foetus is viable, typically around 21 weeks.

<h2>Trump snaps at reporter</h2>

After voting in Palm Beach, Florida, the White House hopeful had a press session. There, Trump was questioned about how he voted on Florida's abortion ballot.

Initially, he dodged the question, deflecting instead to his own legacy on the issue. Trump said he did “a great job bringing it back to the states,” pointing to his role in appointing three conservative justices who tipped the US Supreme Court’s balance and paved the way for the 2022 overturning of Roe v. Wade.

US election: Trump dodges questions on Florida abortion ballot, snaps at reporter: 'Stop talking about that'

In a stunning comeback, Donald J Trump has again clinched the presidency in the 2024 US election. Trump's victory isn’t just a political feat; it’s a testament to the unshakeable support and influence of his family.

As Trump heads back to the White House, let’s take a closer look at the fascinating history and unique characters who make up the Trump family tree—an intriguing mix of entrepreneurs, socialites, and of course political powerhouses who have played their roles both behind the scenes and in the spotlight.

<h2>The roots of the Trump empire</h2>

Trump's family story begins with his paternal grandfather, Frederick Trump. Born in 1869 in Kallstadt, Germany, Frederick emigrated to the US, where he built a modest real estate fortune and passed down a can-do, entrepreneurial spirit that became central to the Trump ethos. His wife, Elizabeth Christ Trump, a trailblazing woman in her own right, took over the family business after Frederick’s early death during the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic, showing resilience that her descendants would inherit.

On the maternal side of his family, Trump’s Scottish grandparents, Malcolm and Mary MacLeod, hailed from the Outer Hebrides, a rugged region known for its stoic and hard-working people. Mary emigrated to America in 1930, instilling in her family the Scottish pride and values that her grandson, Donald, often references.

<h2>The ‘First Family’ of American real estate</h2>

Donald Trump is the fourth of five children born to Frederick C. Trump Sr. and Mary Anne MacLeod. Known as the brash yet charismatic one, Donald stood out early on, even among his equally colourful siblings. While some of his siblings pursued quieter lives, his older brother Fred Jr., the original heir apparent, tragically passed away young, prompting Donald to carry forward the family’s real estate empire.&nbsp;

In his earlier years, Donald was often seen alongside his brother Robert, a dedicated ally who was said to have supported Donald’s political aspirations. His sister, Maryanne, a retired federal judge, though quietly supportive, was famously recorded sharing her frank views about her brother’s leadership style.

<h2>Family at the forefront: The Trump children</h2>

From his early campaigns to his presidential administration, Trump’s children have been key players in his journey to date. Donald Jr., his oldest, has often been his father’s echo on the campaign trail, bringing a fiery charisma to rallies and a formidable presence in the media. Known as “Don Jr.,” he shares his father’s love for the spotlight, along with a deep involvement in the family business and political arena.

Ivanka Trump, often regarded as the calm and composed Trump child, was a close advisor to her father during his first administration, bringing her background in fashion and business to the forefront of White House initiatives. A White House advisor in the first Trump administration, she distanced herself from politics after 2020.

Eric Trump, the middle child, has managed much of the Trump Organization alongside Don Jr. and serves as a trustee. Married to Lara Trump, a former TV producer and now a Republican Committee co-chair, Eric has stayed involved in the political side, balancing it with his executive role in the family business.

<h2>A blended family in the spotlight</h2>

Trump’s current wife, Melania, might be best known for her quiet, enigmatic presence, and she’s supported her husband through every campaign, despite staying mostly off the campaign trail in recent years. Known for her elegance and poise, Melania has already stated her plans to take on initiatives in the White House focusing on children’s issues, similar to her "Be Best" campaign from Trump’s first term.

The other side of the family equation includes Marla Maples, Trump’s second wife, who has been supportive from afar. Their daughter, Tiffany Trump, married to businessman Michael Boulos, joined the family celebration, marking a rare but significant show of unity.

<h2>The next generation: Grandchildren on the rise</h2>

With 10 grandchildren, Trump’s family legacy is already making its way into the future. Don Jr.’s and Eric’s children are already making occasional media appearances, adding to the youthful energy of the family brand. Ivanka’s children, seen frequently during her father’s previous campaigns, also look poised to uphold the family name. Perhaps in another few decades, another Trump will be running for office! Maybe, maybe not. It’s too early to predict.&nbsp;

<h2>What’s next for the Trump family in his second inning?</h2>

As Donald Trump begins his second term, there’s no doubt that his family will remain his closest allies. Beyond their role as business partners, his children and grandchildren are already working to shape the Trump legacy, intertwining it with politics, business, and pop culture.

From German immigrants to the White House (twice!), the Trump family’s journey is a tale of ambition, unity, and the occasional family feud. For now, America watches as this storied dynasty takes its place in history one more time.

US election analysis: Trump poised to enter White House - A legacy built on family and fortunes

Presidential elections are underway in the United States, and authorities have arrested two men for making violent threats.

In Ann Arbor, Michigan, federal authorities have registered another potential life threat against Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump. A 25-year-old man, Isaac Sissel, has been charged with making threats to carry out an attack against conservative Christians if Trump wins the election.

Meanwhile, in Jackson, Michigan, Christopher Pierce, a 46-year-old man, has been arrested for allegedly making threats towards a political action committee (PAC) about the election.

“I guarantee I can find each and every one of your [expletive] organizees. And we will turn you [expletive] inside out. . . . Now you better stop or I promise you this is badly for all of you [expletive] and we won’tinvolve [sic] the law... You will shut down your entire organization or it will be shut down for you. 90% of the members of [named organization]… are trained killers. . . . It paints targets onyour [sic] backs and the backs of your families. Your call centers have been located. Don’t make these boys and girlsgo [sic] to work,” he wrote in a threatening email to the PAC.

<h2>If 'Trump wins'</h2>

Sissel, as per reports, was detained in Ann Arbour, Michigan, on November 5 following an anonymous tip submitted online to the FBI National Threat Operations Center, which included alarming statements about an alleged plan to carry out violence.

According to court records, the threat, in part, read: “I shall carry out an attack against conservative Christian, (sic) filth in the event trump wins the election.”

“I have a stolen ar15 (sic) and a target I refuse to name so I can continue to get away with my plans.”

“Without a specific victim or ability to find the place I hid the gun, there’s not a thing the FBI can do until I complete the attack,” he wrote further.

The online threat, which included mentions of hollow-point ammunition and a chemical irritant, led authorities to track Sissel through phone records and an IP address.

Further investigation revealed he was active on multiple Reddit accounts with names such as “ShootUpTrumpRally,” “PlanningToShootTrump,” and “WillShootTrumpSoon.”

According to the court filings, these accounts were used to make specific threats against Trump and conservative Christians.

<h2>Did Sissel confess?</h2>

As per US media reports, when federal agents located and questioned Sissel at a hotel in Canton, he expressed strong feelings against Trump and conservative Christians, admitting he felt progressive and left groups were not violent enough.

Isaac Sissel told authorities that “he wouldn't kill Trump, but if he knew someone was going to assassinate Trump that it was his duty to not intervene.” He also admitted to hating “conservative Christians, who he enjoyed threatening”.

In addition to his recent online activity, court documents revealed that Sissel does not maintain a permanent residence, instead staying near a rehabilitation centre in Ann Arbor.

Law enforcement reported that Sissel accepted that he had a history of harassing individuals at the clinic, as well as making threats against officers. While he claimed not to own a firearm, he was found carrying a knife and had both Washington and New York driving licences in his possession.

Sissel is scheduled to appear in federal court, where he faces serious charges related to threats against a former president and specific communities.
