Google, on US Election Day, Nov 5 2024, acknowledged a technical glitch that surfaced when users searched for “Where can I vote for Harris,” triggering an interactive map showing polling locations, while similar searches for “Where can I vote for Trump” did not yield the same result.

The issue as per the world's leading search engine has been “fixed”. However, responding to Google's post on X (formerly Twitter), many users reported that they were still facing the issue.

In its statement, the tech giant clarified that the situation was an unintentional occurrence and noted that only a limited number of users search for polling places in this specific way.

Interestingly, the interactive map also failed to open when users searched for “Where can I vote for Kamala,” suggesting that the trigger might be tied to the search term “Harris” and not necessarily to the Democratic Party nominee's name.

At Georgetown University in Washington, DC, students who are dreading listening to political views different from their own are being offered “self-care suites” to help them cope as the 2024 United States presidential elections are underway.

These apolitical cocoons offer students a variety of comfort items, such as milk, cookies, hot cocoa, colouring books, and even a Lego station, and an escape from anything resembling political discourse.

The McCourt School of Public Policy has launched them, according to&nbsp;the New York Post.

Later in the week, those still feeling anxious due to the heated political environment can attend a “Pause for Paws” event, where they can relax with therapy animals while slurping hot chocolate.

Additional post-election programmes for “victims” of political willies at the institute include a “post-election processing space” for journaling, collage-making, and comfort food, featuring a baked potato bar.

US Election: Coddling or self-care? Georgetown offers students milk, cookies and apolitical cocoons

Vermont US Presidential Election 2024: The clock is ticking for the United States presidential elections, and with just a couple of days left for Election Day, on November 5, Democrat candidate Kamala Harris and her Republican rival Donald Trump are engrossed in hectic last-ditch campaigning, as both are locked in a dead heat in the seven battleground states that are likely to decide the outcome.

Harris is hopeful of robust support from Black voters and has also been trying to hold on to the Latino support. In 2020, President Joe Biden had garnered 92 per cent of Black votes along with the support of 59 per cent of Latino voters.

Harris is increasingly vociferous on the issues of abortion and reproductive autonomy to sway women voters in her favour, while poignantly pointing out that Trump’s win could lead to the possibility that Congress and the president could enshrine Roe in law or ban abortion nationwide.

Voters of Vermont would be exercising their franchise on November 5 like others across the country’s 50 states to choose&nbsp;who will lead the US for the next four years.

<h2>All about the state of Vermont, political leaning</h2>

Vermont is in the New England region of the northeastern United States. It is bordered by Quebec in the north, New Hampshire in the east, Lake Champlain and New York to the west, and Massachusetts to the south.

A mountainous state with the Green Mountains running through the middle, Vermont is mostly forested and is known for its fall foliage created by the sugar maple trees.

Vermont is a sparsely populated rural state with a population of 647,064 and has three&nbsp;electoral votes in the Electoral College.

<h2>How does Vermont usually poll?</h2>

Vermont was historically a Republican stronghold and backed the GOP in all elections, but turned into a Democratic stronghold at the presidential level since the early 1990s. The state has been won by Democratic candidates in every presidential race since 1992, and&nbsp;all the victories have been&nbsp;in double digits, except Al Gore’s 9.93 per cent&nbsp;win in 2000.

Vermont was Biden’s strongest state in 2020, with a victory margin of 35.4 per cent. It is now a ‘strongly blue state’ that is expected to be won easily by Harris.

<h2>How many Senate seats are going for election in Vermont? Who are the candidates?</h2>

On November 5, 2024, voters in Vermont will elect one member of the US Senate to represent it. Incumbent three-term Senator Bernie Sanders, an Independent who caucuses with the Democratic Party, was re-elected with 67 per cent&nbsp;of the vote in 2018 and is running for re-election.

The outcome of this race will affect the partisan balance of the US&nbsp;Senate in 2025. Senators hold six-year terms, and one-third of the chamber stands for reelection every two years.

Currently, Democrats hold a slim majority in the chamber, controlling 51 seats (thanks to three independents who caucus with the Democrats). Republicans hold 49 seats.

<h2>How many House of Representatives seats are up for election in Vermont?</h2>

All 150 seats are up for election. Democrats hold 107 seats and Republicans hold 37.

Vermont has a divided government where neither party holds a trifecta. The Republican Party controls the office of governor, while the Democratic Party controls both chambers of the state legislature.

<h2>Who won the presidential election in Vermont in 2020?</h2>

In 2020, Vermont voted for Joe Biden by a 35.1-point margin. This was the biggest margin for Biden among the 50 states. Biden got 66.1 per cent&nbsp;votes.

Indiana US Presidential Election 2024: Voting, Result info, Candidates and all you need to know

‘Tis the season for America to cast their ballot.

As the US voters punch in their ballots, the Indian diaspora is a keenly watched community, particularly as the Democratic contender Kamala Harris traces her roots to India. Republicans have an India connect too, as Donald Trump's running mate JD Vance's wife Usha is Indian.&nbsp;

Research by IAAS (Indian American Attitudes Survey) says the Asian Indian community is 5.2 million strong, of which an estimated 2.6 million are eligible to vote.&nbsp;

In this hotly contested presidential race, what are the issues for Indian-American voters?

Speaking to WION, Gargie Dwivedi, an investment risk analyst from New Jersey said, "No more racist, sexist slur from the president. No more talks about abortion laws, it's high time a woman speaks up for the alike. On my train ride, I heard someone publicly say this race is b*ls vs b*bs. It makes me wonder, do people hate women so much that they prefer Trump?"

Asserting the need for corrective measures in the healthcare sector, Dwivedi stressed on affordable medical assistance programmes&nbsp;like Medicare and Medicaid that cover nearly 150 million Americans.

Earlier in October, in a first, Harris proposed Medicare home health care, saying in an interview with ABC, “There are so many people in our country who are right in the middle. They’re taking care of their kids and they’re taking care of their aging parents, and it’s just almost impossible to do it all, especially if they work."&nbsp;

As we spoke to Naseem Khan, a techie from New York, she reiterated the need for a better economy, climate action, and better immigration for Indians.&nbsp;

"The temperature here oscillates between 40°F and 70°F, the sudden switch is unbearable. Global warming is no longer a concept in research books. It has been accepted and established as a threat. It's imperative to take timely action."

Highlighting how inflation is becoming a burden to keep a well-charted budget, Khan added, "Fuel was priced at $1.7/litre in Texas, it has reached $3. Breakfast essentials like eggs flaunt a $9 price tag, which used to be humbly priced at $4."

Red, blue, or purple states, it’s only a matter of hours until the world will know who America’s next president is.

Will America elect its first ‘Madam President’ or will a former president assume office again?

Indian Americans are waiting to see, just like the rest of the nation and the world.

‘Tis the season for America to cast their ballot. As the US voters punch in their ballots, the Indian diaspora is a keenly watched community, particularly as the Democratic contender Kamala Harris traces her roots to India.

Republicans have an India connect too, as Donald Trump's running mate JD Vance's wife Usha is Indian. Research by IAAS (Indian American Attitudes Survey) says the Asian Indian community is 5.2 million strong, of which an estimated 2.6 million are eligible to vote. Also Read: Georgia poll worker arrested for faking bomb threat to frame voter after argument In this hotly contested presidential race, what are the issues for Indian-American voters? Speaking to WION, Gargie Dwivedi, an investment risk analyst from New Jersey said, "No more racist, sexist slur from the president. No more talks about abortion laws, it's high time a woman speaks up for the alike. On my train ride, I heard someone publicly say this race is b*ls vs b*bs. It makes me wonder, do people hate women so much that they prefer Trump?" × Asserting the need for corrective measures in the healthcare sector, Dwivedi stressed on affordable medical assistance programmes like Medicare and Medicaid that cover nearly 150 million Americans. Earlier in October, in a first, Harris proposed Medicare home health care, saying in an interview with ABC, “There are so many people in our country who are right in the middle. They’re taking care of their kids and they’re taking care of their aging parents, and it’s just almost impossible to do it all, especially if they work." As we spoke to Naseem Khan, a techie from New York, she reiterated the need for a better economy, climate action, and better immigration for Indians. "The temperature here oscillates between 40°F and 70°F, the sudden switch is unbearable. Global warming is no longer a concept in research books. It has been accepted and established as a threat. It's imperative to take timely action." Highlighting how inflation is becoming a burden to keep a well-charted budget, Khan added, "Fuel was priced at $1.7/litre in Texas, it has reached $3. Breakfast essentials like eggs flaunt a $9 price tag, which used to be humbly priced at $4." Red, blue, or purple states, it’s only a matter of hours until the world will know who America’s next president is. Will America elect its first ‘Madam President’ or will a former president assume office again? Indian Americans are waiting to see, just like the rest of the nation and the world.

Madam president or former president? Indian diaspora voters speak to WION on US elections

The custom of holding US elections on Tuesday has its roots in the twentieth century, taking into consideration factors such as farming schedules, church attendance patterns, and many other sociological aspects that were dominant then. While, of course, these considerations have changed quite significantly, that part of the southeastern states still bears this tradition, as there were some historical reasons for making Tuesday a voting day.

<h2>Revelling in Culture and Practicality</h2>

In the early 1800s, the US was mostly a structured agricultural society. They did&nbsp;not have a big population, but most Americans were farmers who lived miles away from the poll centre, most of which were in the urban areas. Voting within these hinterland regions could take more than a day to get to the nearest grown-up voting place, even worse in return. In some religiously hardened societies, dominion was considered inappropriate as such days were reserved for worship; thus, it made no sense to conduct elections on Sunday. Furthermore, opinions were not held on Monday because it would require the citizens and the farmers to travel on a Saturday.

But still, it was also impossible to use a Wednesday because such a day was used by most men to go to the market and sell the produce. Therefore, this made Tuesday the most reasonable day. It was possible for the voters who wanted to vote to travel on Monday, vote on Tuesday and then return in time for the Wednesday market day or any other engagement.

<h2>The Date Determining Authority of Congress: A Brief Discussion</h2>

The tradition of holding presidential elections on a Tuesday was instituted in 1845 when Congress directed that Election Day be designated “on the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November”. This measure was aimed at making sure that elections were held in all states at favourable periods and uniformity prevailed among states on the date of holding elections. November was perceived as the best month since it came at the end of the season in most states and before the onset of snowfall, giving a period when people could move about easily, especially the country folks.

<h2>Contemporary Perspectives and Proposals for Transformation</h2>

The days of the week were instituted in the State of Colorado as days on which it was acceptable to hold elections decades ago, mainly because of legal reasons that have nothing to say about the culture of the state concerned. Numerous suggestions have arisen regarding this concern, including moving the elections to the weekend and&nbsp;making it a public holiday&nbsp;due to the problems with participation since many citizens do not vote on working days. This Is because it would call for some legislative changes at the minimum and a change of culture.

<h2>Aware of Setbacks, Yet Unwavering in Their Devotion to the New Constitution</h2>

The fact that election day continues to be observed on a Tuesday reveals the extent of how practical issues of a different time still influence Americans' way of casting their votes. These historical elements might also seem useless as they belong to the past but are still fundamental in conducting elections, thus showing the relevance of previous practices to present-day society.

<h2>Sticking to Tuesday as a Dedicated Day for Election</h2>

Sticking to Tuesday as a dedicated day for elections has modern implications that mostly concern the level of participation of the people. Most people find it difficult to vote due to the working hours, restrictions in the hours of polling, and problems associated with transportation. This arrangement tends to depress, especially, the young voters who are poorly paid and work on an hourly basis, and hence there are likely to be fewer voters. Others even go a notch higher, calling for the shift of the election day to the weekend or declaring it as a public holiday to avoid long queues and ensure more people participate so that democracy gets better.

<h2>Proposed Alternatives and Ongoing Debates</h2>

In addition to Tuesday voting, some proposed alternatives include shifting the day of elections to the weekend, instituting a national holiday, and increasing mail-in or advance voting options. Proponents of this view contend that such changes would enhance access to the electoral process, particularly for individuals who have rigid working hours, and in turn increase turnout. Yet, the critics are worried about the practical implementation challenges, the costs that would be incurred, and the risks of prolonged election campaigning activities. The discourse revolves also around assessing the need for early voting practices and the issues of safeguarding election security and integrity in view of the proposed changes.

US Elections: Why do all elections take place on Tuesday of November’s first full week?

Donald Trump held his final rally in Macon, Georgia, on Sunday (Nov 2), where he drew a large crowd to the Atrium Health amphitheatre. Arriving an hour and a half late, Trump sported a black-and-gold "Make America Great Again" cap and stuck to his characteristic themes, including controversial proposals related to immigration and crime.

During the rally, Trump announced his intention to bring back the Alien Enemies Act of 1790.

<h2>What is the Alien Enemies Act of 1790?</h2>

The Alien Enemies Act of 1790 allows the US president to detain, relocate, or deport non-citizens from a country considered an enemy of the US during wartime. According to the Guardian, it has historically been used to relocate and detain Japanese, Italian, and German Americans during World War II.&nbsp;

Trump also suggested that he would pursue the death penalty for undocumented immigrants convicted of killing Americans.&nbsp;

"The United States is now an occupied country. This is thousands of people all over our towns and cities," he said.

Trump referenced the recent murder of Minelys "Mimi" Zoe Rodriguez-Ramirez in Cornelia, Georgia, claiming that the suspect was in the US illegally. He then brought Rodriguez-Ramirez's mother, Carmen, to the stage.

"I lose my daughter, but I don’t lose my faith," she said, endorsing Trump as "the best choice for the USA".

"I met Donald Trump in person. He's the most wonderful person that I've seen."

Minelys "Mimi" Zoe Rodriguez-Ramirez, a TikToker, was found dead last month. A&nbsp;24-year-old man named Angel DeJesus Rivera-Sanches has been arrested in connection to her abduction and murder.

Trump, on Sunday, in another rally, criticised retired military leaders, including former Joint Chiefs of Staff Chair Mark Milley and former Defense Secretary James Mattis calling them "stupid". Iowa US Presidential Election 2024: Voting, Result info, Candidates and all you need to know

US elections: Just days before the US presidential election, former President Donald Trump complained about gaps in the bulletproof glass surrounding him. At a rally in Lititz, Pennsylvania, the Republican Party presidential nominee noted that an attacker would have to shoot through members of the "fake news" to reach him, adding, "I don't mind that so much."&nbsp;

While referring to the press as "fake news," Trump's rhetoric at the event targeted the media heavily, calling outlets like ABC, CBS, and NBC "seriously corrupt."&nbsp;

"ABC, it's ABC, fake news, CBS, ABC, NBC. These are, these are, in my opinion, in my opinion, these are seriously corrupt people," he said.

Trump's remarks come as, this year, the Republican has escaped two assassination attempts, including an incident in July where he was grazed by a bullet at another rally.&nbsp;

Campaign spokesperson Steven Cheung later clarified that Trump's comments focused on security concerns due to "dangerous rhetoric from Democrats," rather than intentions to harm the media.

"The president’s statement about protective glass placement has nothing to do with the media being harmed, or anything else. It was about threats against him that were spurred on by dangerous rhetoric from Democrats," said the statement.

At Sunday's rally in Pennsylvania, one of seven critical battleground states, Trump again took potshots at his political rival, the Democratic Party presidential nominee, Vice President Kamala Harris.&nbsp;

He criticised the US election process, and early voting systems, and said that the election results should be determined by the end of election day. Questioning the integrity of the system, he suggested the results could take an additional 12 days.

"They spend all this money, all this money on machines, and they're going to say we may take an extra 12 days to determine," he said, asking the crowd what could happen in those days. To this, some in the crowd shouted "cheating" and "fraud."&nbsp;

"It's a crooked country. And we're going to make it straight," Trump added.

'Fake news' first in line: Trump suggests he'd rather let press take the bullet; 'I don’t mind that so much'

Donald Trump, hitting back at Mark Cuban for his statement claiming that the Republican allegedly avoids strong, intelligent women in his circles, called the billionaire a "very insecure guy".

<h2>'Tremendously strong women'</h2>

Appearing on Fox &amp; Friends, on Saturday (Nov 2) Trump pushed back on Cuban's comment and highlighted his wife Melania and advisers like Kellyanne Conway and Susie Wiles as examples of strong women in his orbit.&nbsp;

Trump pointed out that he happens to be married to a particularly strong woman who just had a No. 1 bestseller book, and said,&nbsp;"I have given women chances too. Kellyanne was the head of my 2016 victory. Susie Wiles is strong…I have tremendously strong women".

"Well, I know Mark Cuban. He is a very insecure guy. Can't hit a golf ball more than 50 yards. He's weak physically and mentally...I have known him for a long time. He would call me in the White House incessantly and finally, I just couldn't take his calls anymore and then he went over the other side. He's a guy that wants publicly. When he said that...you know he totally retracted his statement..," claimed Trump.

Cuban, while appearing on The View, had suggested that Trump avoids women who challenge him, particularly on issues like reproductive rights.

<h2>Saving economy from 'obliteration'</h2>

Also on Saturday, at a campaign rally in Salem, Virginia, the Republican Party presidential nominee claimed that he was the only candidate capable of rescuing the US economy from "obliteration".

Trump told his supporters that he was confident about the Election Day outcome in Virginia and said,&nbsp;"We win Virginia, we win the whole thing without question."

He also reinforced his stance on key election issues, including immigration, the economy, and gender rights in sports.

Addressing his campaign's recent ads targeting transgender athletes, Trump invited members of a local college swim team onstage and pledged to support "women’s rights in sports."

Taking direct aim at Vice President Kamala Harris, he criticised "Kamala's economy," and said that the Democrat's handling of the economy was a cause of "depression" rather than recession. He promised tax relief measures, such as eliminating taxes on tips and Social Security, and proposed increased oil drilling to reduce energy costs.

Addressing his campaign's recent ads targeting transgender athletes, Trump invited members of a local college swim team onstage and pledged to support "women’s rights in sports." Taking direct aim at Vice President Kamala Harris, he criticised "Kamala's economy," and said that the Democrat's handling of the economy was a cause of "depression" rather than recession. He promised tax relief measures, such as eliminating taxes on tips and Social Security, and proposed increased oil drilling to reduce energy costs. (With inputs from agencies)

Trump says surrounded by 'tremendously strong women,' claims only he can save US economy from 'obliteration'

Just days before the 2024 US presidential elections, a new report has come to light adding to controversies surrounding the Republican candidate Donald Trump. The former president reportedly told his aides that he wanted to give President Joe Biden an offensive nickname following the June debate.

Trump is known for his liking to give nicknames to his political adversaries from phrases like 'Sleepy Joe' and 'Crooked Hillary' to 'Ron DeSanctimonious'. According to a recent report by the Atlantic, Trump wanted to add “Retarded Joe Biden” to his list.

“The guy’s a retard. He’s retarded. I think that’s what I’ll start calling him,” Trump reportedly said aboard his campaign plane, in late June, following the presidential debate with his opponent.

Trump’s campaign staff allegedly better him not to say the R-word in public. They warned the former president of the risk of losing moderate voters who had chosen to align with Republicans, reported the Atlantic. However, Trump spokesman Steven Cheung said the claims were “materially false”, adding that the nickname “was never discussed.”

<h2>Using slurs for his adversaries</h2>

While the Republican has never used the nickname in public, he has used the r-word to describe his personal and political rivals on multiple occasions to insult them.

Trump had earlier said in 2020 how he could be losing to a “mental retard”, referring to Biden, when asked about the polling numbers in the last presidential elections, according to Vanity Fair.&nbsp;

The former president has allegedly also referred to Republican presidential candidate Kamala Harris using the same slur word during a late September dinner with Republican donors. Trump has repeatedly attacked Harris’ mental abilities at his campaign rallies, naming her “mentally impaired” and “mentally disabled” since her presidential nomination.

As election day nears, Trump’s controversial rhetoric has only continued with him having violent fantasies about Liz Cheney, hosting a “hate rally” at Madison Square Garden, and a microphone fiasco during a Milwaukee rally.

Trump was stopped from calling Biden an offensive nickname: Report

With just days remaining for the US presidential election, Democratic candidate Kamala Harris made a surprising appearance on Saturday Night Live (SNL), where she engaged in a humorous skit with comedian Maya Rudolph, known for her portrayal of the vice president.

'Keep Calm-ala': Kamala Harris makes surprise SNL cameo ahead of US Election Day

A controversial "Progress 2028" manifesto, posing as a progressive platform from Vice President Kamala Harris, has been exposed as a misleading fake document reportedly funded by conservative dark money groups with links to Elon Musk, according to a report from the watchdog group Open Secrets.

<h2 bis_size="{&quot;x&quot;:7,&quot;y&quot;:84,&quot;w&quot;:813,&quot;h&quot;:25,&quot;abs_x&quot;:40,&quot;abs_y&quot;:1774}">What is Progress 2028?</h2>

Progress 2028, which presents itself as a liberal vision for America, is allegedly part of an initiative by Building America's Future, a conservative dark money network which reportedly has backing from Musk.&nbsp;

The faux manifesto has been amplified by targeted Facebook ads distorting Harris's policy views on issues such as immigration, healthcare, and gun control.&nbsp;

Open Secrets, as per AFP, describes the project as a calculated effort to mislead and potentially alienate Democratic voters.&nbsp;

Anna Massoglia, a researcher with Open Secrets, remarked that the initiative "is really trying to undermine Harris by spreading divisive messages, misleading narratives under the guise of being an ally of Harris".

Examples of this strategy include claims that Harris supports a mandatory nationwide gun buyback, taxpayer-funded healthcare for "undocumented immigrants," and allowing minors to access gender-affirming care without "parental intervention" — none of which align with Harris's official policies for the 2024 election.

<h2 bis_size="{&quot;x&quot;:7,&quot;y&quot;:394,&quot;w&quot;:813,&quot;h&quot;:25,&quot;abs_x&quot;:40,&quot;abs_y&quot;:2084}">Voter suppression</h2>

In addition to misleading domestic audiences, the Progress 2028 campaign is also involved in targeting specific voter groups with conflicting messages, said the group.

Facebook ads that say "Drop a comment to thank Kamala," and provide a link to the Progress 2028 website reportedly promote Harris as pro-Israel to Jewish voters while presenting her as anti-Israel to Arab American voters. This tactic, as per the report could sway opinions in states with pivotal Arab American and Jewish demographics, such as Michigan and Pennsylvania.

Google data shows that the ads were paid for by the Future Coalition PAC, which, as per the Federal Election Commission, has received millions in funding from Building America's Future.

James Zogby, president of the Arab American Institute, in a conversation with AFP, referred to this tactic as a form of "voter suppression."

"When the same group is doing ads to two different constituencies with contradictory messaging, it's disinformation," he said.

According to the report, Progress 2028's ads remain active on Meta's platform because they don't meet the company's criteria for its inauthentic behaviour policy, said Meta in a statement to US Media.

US election sabotage? Musk-linked group behind anti-Harris disinformation, 'Progress 2028' manifesto: Report

A second Donald Trump presidency could amplify efforts by conservative politicians to restrict abortion access across the United States.

Here's a closer look at the legal tools available to a future administration intent on limiting abortion access — and how abortion rights defenders are preparing to fight back.

<h2>Federal actions</h2>

For advocates of abortion rights, the nightmare scenario is a Republican-controlled Congress enacting sweeping national restrictions or an outright ban.

Vice President Kamala Harris has championed a federal law protecting abortion, but that would require Democratic control of the House, Senate, and presidency.

If Trump wins, but Republicans, do not control Congress, he could still "do a lot of damage to abortion access" through federal actions and judicial appointments, American University law professor Lewis Grossman told AFP.

The Republican former president's Supreme Court picks were pivotal in dismantling decades of legal precedent protecting the national right to abortion.

While Trump has at times hinted at moderation during the 2024 campaign — even suggesting he might veto any anti-abortion law that lands on his desk — some fear Project 2025 as the real battle plan.

Published by the ultra-conservative Heritage Foundation, the document offers a roadmap for harsher executive branch restrictions, developed with input from former Trump officials. Trump has publicly distanced himself from the document.

<h2>New conditions on abortion pills</h2>

Experts predict abortion pills could be Trump's first target.

Mifepristone, which prevents pregnancy progression, and misoprostol, which empties the uterus, accounted for nearly two-thirds of US abortions last year, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Medical abortion, approved by the US Food and Drug Administration since 2000, used to require in-clinic visits. However, during COVID-19, telehealth briefly opened access by mail, a policy that Joe Biden's government made permanent in 2021.

A Trump administration might reinstate in-person requirements or roll back other eased regulations, said George Washington University law professor Sonia Suter -- a simpler step than rescinding approval, though that is also possible.

Also read |<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/us-election-2024-avoid-voter-suppression-with-these-essential-tips-772023"> US Election 2024: Avoid voter suppression with these essential tips</a>

Angie Jean-Marie of Plan C, a nonprofit focused on abortion access, said that if access to mifepristone is restricted, providers may rely on misoprostol alone, a potential workaround since it's already approved for various medical uses and subject to fewer regulations.

If Harris wins, Jean-Marie says advocates would push for her to make the pills available without a prescription.

<h2>Reviving obscenity law</h2>

Anti-abortion activists are eyeing the Comstock Act, a 19th-century law prohibiting the mailing of "obscene" materials, including items for "producing abortion."

The US Justice Department under Biden currently interprets this law as inapplicable to approved abortion pills.

But Suter told AFP that a broad interpretation could apply that to "anything used to produce an abortion -- materials for surgical abortions -- which could effectively create a national ban."

This could disrupt the supply chain in clinics and hospitals across states where abortion is currently legal -- or where it may soon be permitted through state-level referendums on November 5.

Conservative lawyer and scholar Josh Craddock told AFP: "There is nothing nefarious or 'backdoor' about enforcing the laws that Congress has enacted and repeatedly reaffirmed. "

<h2>Judicial appointments and more</h2>

A Trump administration could also seek to undo the stringent patient privacy protections put in place by Biden for women seeking abortions out-of-state, said Suter, paving the way for possible prosecutions when they return home.

Although the Supreme Court's conservative majority has already overturned Roe v Wade, experts say the power to appoint federal judges remains paramount.

Courts may soon be called to decide the fate of state laws that make it harder for women to access care in more abortion-friendly states, Grossman explained.

Jean-Marie emphasised that pro-abortion groups aren't sitting idle.

"If Trump wins, there's much to prepare in those weeks before inauguration," she said, noting strategies like pill stockpiling, overseas sourcing and community support networks.

Pro-abortion organizations also are launching the "You Have Options" campaign to make sure women have access to critical resources, no matter who wins on November 5.

US elections: How a second Trump presidency could reshape abortion access in the US

Just a few days back, on Sunday (Oct 27), a comedian at a Donald Trump rally in New York City made the headlines for all the wrong reasons and sent the US election race into the "garbage" so to say.

During his opening set at Madison Square Garden, Comedian Tony Hinchcliffe made comments that leaned into racial stereotypes, including a jab calling Puerto Rico a "floating island of garbage," sparking widespread backlash.

<h2 bis_size="{&quot;x&quot;:8,&quot;y&quot;:119,&quot;w&quot;:987,&quot;h&quot;:25,&quot;abs_x&quot;:41,&quot;abs_y&quot;:1961}">Who is Tony Hinchcliffe?</h2>

Hinchcliffe is a comedian known for making offensive remarks and a "roast" style of insult comedy.

He began his career in 2007 and has opened for the likes of popular comedians like Joe Rogan and Jeff Ross.

Since 2013, he has hosted a weekly podcast, "Kill Tony" with the comedian and podcast producer Brian Redban.

In 2020, he made a comment on Kobe Bryant, the day the basketball star died in a helicopter crash.&nbsp;Hinchcliffe, in a risky joke on Twitter (now X), referred to Kobe's reputation of hogging the ball and said: "Kobe passing? That can't be true."

The next year, in 2021, he was in the headlines for using a racial slur to describe Peng Dang, an Asian American stand-up comedian and actor.

At the time, amid heavy criticism, he refused to apologise and told Variety, "I knew that what I had done was not wrong."

"My stance is that comedians should never apologize for a joke, should never stop working if everyone comes after them and should never slow down. In fact, they should utilize anything that happens to them for more material," He added.

<h2 bis_size="{&quot;x&quot;:8,&quot;y&quot;:465,&quot;w&quot;:987,&quot;h&quot;:25,&quot;abs_x&quot;:41,&quot;abs_y&quot;:2307}">What did he say in Madison Garden?</h2>

Leaning into the racist stereotype that Latinos are preoccupied with childbearing and averse to birth control, the comedian said they "love making babies" and do not "pull out".

"There's literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now," Hinchcliffe said, adding, "I think it's called Puerto Rico."

Who is Tony Hinchcliffe? Hinchcliffe is a comedian known for making offensive remarks and a "roast" style of insult comedy. He began his career in 2007 and has opened for the likes of popular comedians like Joe Rogan and Jeff Ross. Since 2013, he has hosted a weekly podcast, "Kill Tony" with the comedian and podcast producer Brian Redban. Also read | Biden calls Trump supporters 'floating garbage,' faces immediate backlash In 2020, he made a comment on Kobe Bryant, the day the basketball star died in a helicopter crash. Hinchcliffe, in a risky joke on Twitter (now X), referred to Kobe's reputation of hogging the ball and said: "Kobe passing? That can't be true." The next year, in 2021, he was in the headlines for using a racial slur to describe Peng Dang, an Asian American stand-up comedian and actor. At the time, amid heavy criticism, he refused to apologise and told Variety, "I knew that what I had done was not wrong." "My stance is that comedians should never apologize for a joke, should never stop working if everyone comes after them and should never slow down. In fact, they should utilize anything that happens to them for more material," He added. What did he say in Madison Garden? Leaning into the racist stereotype that Latinos are preoccupied with childbearing and averse to birth control, the comedian said they "love making babies" and do not "pull out". "There's literally a floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean right now," Hinchcliffe said, adding, "I think it's called Puerto Rico." 🇺🇸 Puerto Rico’s Republican Party Chairman Ángel Cintrón CONDEMNED comedian Tony Hinchcliffe's remarks, stating they were “unfortunate, ignorant, and entirely reprehensible.” Hinchcliffe had referred to Puerto Rico as a “floating island of garbage in the middle of the ocean.” pic.twitter.com/9Lmjlhw6q0 — Be Good (@be_good12) October 27, 2024 × As expected, his insensitive remarks garnered quite the condemnation, including from US President Joe Biden, who came up with his own "garbage" statement, earning a lot of backlash. Who is Tony Hinchcliffe? The comedian who sent US election into 'garbage'

A popular vote in an election means that when a voter picks up a ballot and marks their preferred candidate's name, those votes are counted directly.

In the United States, the popular vote refers to the total number of votes cast in favour of a candidate, contrasting with the Electoral Votes that ultimately determine who becomes president. While the popular vote does not directly decide the next leader, the candidate who wins the most popular votes in a state typically receives all of that state's Electoral College votes, according to the winner-takes-all rule, implemented in most states.

In US presidential election history, there have been five instances where candidates have won the presidency despite receiving fewer popular votes than their opponents.

In the 2000 presidential election, George W. Bush defeated Democratic candidate Al Gore, despite securing approximately 500,000 fewer votes nationwide. The decisive state was Florida, where Bush won by a razor-thin margin. Ultimately, Bush received 271 electoral votes—one more than the halfway mark—while Gore won the overall popular vote.

Beyond the presidency, several elections are determined by popular vote, including elections for senators and representatives. Senators are elected based on the total number of popular votes in each state, while House members are elected from their respective congressional districts. Gubernatorial races, state legislative elections, and various municipal offices are also determined by popular vote.

The ongoing disparity between popular and electoral votes has sparked debates about electoral reform. While Electoral College votes ultimately decide who will lead the country, popular votes serve as an important indicator of public support and voter sentiment.

US Election 2024: Avoid voter suppression with these essential tips

In less than a week, millions in the United States will cast their ballot in the hard-to-predict 2024 US Presidential elections. With recent polls showing the two top candidates — Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris — engaged in a neck-to-neck race, every vote matters.

If you or someone you know has a disability and is confused about voting easily, do not fret. In&nbsp;America, there are specific laws to ensure that voters with special needs do not face any barriers while casting their votes.&nbsp;

Here's a lowdown:&nbsp;

<h2 bis_size="{&quot;x&quot;:8,&quot;y&quot;:167,&quot;w&quot;:723,&quot;h&quot;:26,&quot;abs_x&quot;:41,&quot;abs_y&quot;:1852}">Laws for voters with disabilities</h2>

There are several federal laws that protect the voting rights of Americans with disabilities. These include the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Help America Vote Act (HAVA).

HAVA, 2002, mandates that every polling station must have at least one Accessible Voting Machine (AVM).

While many states let people with disabilities vote absentee by mail, voters with disabilities have the right to vote in private, without help at a polling booth; Have an accessible polling place with special voting machines.

Voters with a disability may seek help from poll workers trained to use an accessible voting machine or bring someone to help them vote.&nbsp;

Some states also offer "curbside voting," when a poll worker brings them everything they need to vote from their car. Alternatively, some local organisations also provide transportation to the polls.

Kennedy argued that staying on the ballot violated his First Amendment rights by misleading voters and wrongly implying that he still wanted to be the US president.

Morning brief: US urges Israel to address Gaza humanitarian crisis; Harris' closing argument speech, and more

Jeff Bezos, the owner of the Washington Post, on Monday (Oct 28) defended the publication's decision to not endorse Democratic Party's presidential nominee Kamala Harris. In an opinion piece published on the Post's website, Bezos, the billionaire founder of Amazon.com and Blue Origin, said it was a "principled decision".

This comes as reports claimed that more than 200,000 users, about 8 per cent of its total subscribers, have cancelled their online subscriptions to the Washington Post after the popular news outlet decided not to endorse a candidate in the upcoming US presidential elections.

"What presidential endorsements actually do is create a perception of bias. A perception of non-independence," Bezos wrote.

"Ending them is a principled decision."

Bezos also denied allegations that the lack of endorsement had something to do with the meeting between Blue Origin CEO Dave Limp meeting Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.

"I would also like to be clear that no quid pro quo of any kind is at work here," said Bezos.

'This is sweet': US President Biden votes early, supports Harris against Trump in Delaware

US intelligence agencies have identified domestic extremists, driven by conspiracy theories about election fraud, as the most significant threat of violence leading up to and following the 2024 election.&nbsp;

It stipulates that extremists can target individuals, such as candidates, election officials, judges, and members of the media. Key locations at risk, as per the bulletin, include polling sites, ballot drop boxes, and political gatherings.

After the January 6, 2021 riots, there has been a significant shift in intelligence dissemination practices. US intelligence report warns Trump-backed election conspiracy theories pose 'significant' extremism threat

Democratic candidate Kamala Harris narrowly leads Republican rival Donald Trump in the US presidential race, according to the latest opinion poll by statistical website FiveThirtyEight, just days ahead of Election Day.

The data from its daily election poll tracker also reveals that the US vice president's razor-thin edge has slightly decreased over the past two months, while Trump has secured a 0.9 percentage-point gain since October 1.

However, after factoring in the Electoral College outcome, the US pollster says its model shows Trump has a 54 out of 100 chance of winning the election, while Harris has a 46 out of 100 chance.

In 2012, the site also predicted Obama's re-election with more than a 90 per cent chance.

However, in 2016, Nate Silver faced criticism as his prediction model gave Donald Trump a mere 29 per cent chance of winning. Trump went on to win his first shot at the presidency, becoming the 45th POTUS.

The website adopted a more nuanced approach in 2020, forecasting Joe Biden's victory but calling it a 'fine line between a landslide and nail-biter'. When the results trickled in, Joe Biden won 306 electoral votes against Donald Trump's 232.

US election: Opinion poll shows Harris holds narrow lead over Trump, but razor-thin edge starting to fray

Chinese state-linked hackers reportedly intercepted calls and text messages involving prominent US political figures, including a Trump campaign adviser, reported by The Washington Post on Sunday.&nbsp;

This espionage operation, allegedly led by a hacker group known as Salt Typhoon, has targeted campaign staff from both the Republican and Democratic parties.&nbsp;

According to the Post report, the security breach reportedly targeted phones linked to former President Donald Trump and his running mate JD Vance.

Previously, news agency Reuters on Friday reported that Chinese hackers targeted people affiliated with the campaign of Democratic Party candidate Vice President Kamala Harris.&nbsp;

This significant breach in US telecommunications security so close to the 2024 US elections has raised concerns about information integrity.

On Friday, the FBI and Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA) said they were actively investigating, with preliminary findings pointing to unauthorised access to at least 10 major US carriers including Verizon AT&amp;T, Lumen and potentially others.

The hackers reportedly accessed unencrypted communications, including audio calls, text messages, and phone logs. &nbsp;

While both campaigns were informed last week of the intrusion, the FBI has not confirmed whether the hackers accessed specific call content.&nbsp;

As per the report citing two people familiar with the matter, the number of victims identified to date stands at fewer than 100. However, more names may yet emerge as the investigation continues. The relatively low number of victim count, as per the report citing a former senior US cyber operations official, may be because hackers saw the victims and the access they have, as "exquisite" and highly valuable.

Chinese hackers allegedly intercept calls, texts of Trump, Harris campaigns ahead of 2024 US election

The United States is gearing up for the big Election Day — Nov 5. As the nation readies to elect its next president, early voting has already begun in many of the 50 US states. The election race between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris is tighter than ever.&nbsp;

Those voting for the first time may be wondering if they need to bring an ID to vote. Here's your answer.

<h2 bis_size="{&quot;x&quot;:8,&quot;y&quot;:118,&quot;w&quot;:723,&quot;h&quot;:26,&quot;abs_x&quot;:41,&quot;abs_y&quot;:1805}">Do I need an ID to vote?</h2>

The answer depends on where you're voting from because rules vary widely across the country.&nbsp;

To put it simply, in the US, there's no one-size-fits-all answer to voter ID requirements.&nbsp;

While federal law doesn't require a photo ID to vote, each state has its requirements. Broadly, ID requirements fall into three categories:

<h3 bis_size="{&quot;x&quot;:8,&quot;y&quot;:311,&quot;w&quot;:723,&quot;h&quot;:20,&quot;abs_x&quot;:41,&quot;abs_y&quot;:1998}">Strict photo ID states</h3>

In more than 20 states, voters require a government-issued photo ID—like a driving licence or passport—for casting a ballot. This includes Georgia, Indiana, and Texas, which have very strict rules. Those without a valid ID may have to vote with a provisional ballot, which will only be counted if they present an ID within a set timeframe after the election.

<h3 bis_size="{&quot;x&quot;:8,&quot;y&quot;:436,&quot;w&quot;:723,&quot;h&quot;:20,&quot;abs_x&quot;:41,&quot;abs_y&quot;:2123}">Non-strict ID states</h3>

Other states, such as Ohio and Arizona, allow a range of ID options, from utility bills to bank statements. Here, a photo ID isn't necessarily required.&nbsp;

Voters without any form of ID can often sign an affidavit or have an election official confirm their identity to vote as usual.

States like California, Oregon, and New York don't require any ID for in-person voting. Instead, they depend on voter registration records to confirm identity, with added safeguards like signature verification to prevent fraud.

US Elections: Do you need ID to vote? Here's the lowdown

United States President Joe Biden has publicly slammed Tesla CEO Elon Musk for his hypocrisy regarding the country's immigration laws, following reports that the Tesla CEO worked illegally in the United States during the 1990s.
