Although the medical specialists working at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago had a machine which could have filled the space of the absent organs for some days while any remaining infection was cleared, there was no conventional way to fill the huge gap which would be created by the removal of lungs in the chest of the patient. 
 
However, the surgeons came up with a never-heard solution for Bauer which was a pair of DD breast implants which were placed where his old lungs were once working.

"Someone who is actively dying and was so sick like David, generally, will have no option of transplant, and they generally just die," stated chief thoracic surgeon Ankit Bharat, while speaking to CNN. 
 
"We had to come up with a strategy to do something that we've never done before,” he added.

<h2>'Lungs started to liquefy because of infection'</h2>

Bauer was a chain smoker in his early 20s, but he switched to vaping in 2014, while considering it as a healthier alternative. 
 
After he caught influenza in April, the doctors found his lungs in no state to cope and he easily caught a secondary infection, which was not getting cleared by any antibiotic. 
 
Bauer, who was desperately short of breath, reached a St Louis hospital, where he was put on an ECMO (extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) system.

The system took over the task of the lungs of balancing the gases of his blood.

It will help it slide out easily. Dr Wang recommends using lidocaine or ethanol to kill bigger insects. These chemicals prevent damage to the ear by stopping them from moving. Director of Moga Medicity Hospital Ajmer Singh Kalra said the patient had been suffering from stomach pain for two years. He was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of fever and vomiting.&nbsp;

"On carrying out an X-ray, we found lockets, chain, nuts, bolts, earphones and many other objects inside the stomach. We then decided to operate on him,” he told local media.

<h2>Patient was diagnosed with pica disorder</h2>

According to the doctors, the patient suffered from pica disorder.

“Pica is an eating disorder in which a person eats things not usually considered food. Since he had eaten sharp objects, there are severe wounds in his stomach. Even thought the surgery was carried out successfully, he is still on ventilator and is critical,” Ajmer Singh said.

Singh's family members were also surprised by the findings and they had no idea how he managed to ingest the items. They said he&nbsp;complained&nbsp;of stomach ache and was unable to sleep. The family also added that he was mentally disturbed.

Interestingly enough, the researchers found that when male surgeons treated female patients, outcomes were slightly worse.&nbsp;

Female surgeons are better than male counterparts, studies show

A new study has said that a majority of care workers who were sponsored for skilled work visas in the UK in 2022 came from non-EU countries, with maximum coming from India and just one per cent from the EU countries.

The report has been made by Migration Observatory at the University of Oxford. The country's immigration system brought unprecedented number of workers from overseas into health and care workforce in the year 2022-2023, it said.

India was the top country of nationality for newly-recruited overseas doctors (20 per cent) and nurses (46 per cent). India was followed by Nigeria, Pakistan and the Philippines, said the study.

India (33 per cent) was also among top countries of citizenship for workers using Certificates of Sponsorship (CoS) in 2022, followed by Zimbabwe and Nigeria.

From 2017, recruitment of non-EU citizens on skilled work visas increased in the health and care sector against a backdrop of staff shortages.

There was a particularly sharp increase in 2021 and 2022.&nbsp;

According to Britain's Office for National Statistics (ONS), vacancies in the UK's health and social work sector peaked at 217,000 in July and September 2022. It fell somewhat in late 2022 and early 2023.

Most of the new doctors and nurses in UK came from India, says study

A complicated and unusual surgery, which has been dubbed as a "miracle", was carried out by doctors on a 12-year-boy during which they reattached his head back to his neck after he got involved in an accident with a car while riding a bicycle, reported The Times of Israel. 
 
The boy, named Suleiman Hassan, went through an "internal decapitation" due to which his skull was detached from the top vertebrae of his spine after the accident, according to the news outlet. Scientifically, the condition is called 'bilateral atlanto occipital joint dislocation'. 
 
After the boy met with the accident, he was airlifted to Hadassah Medical Centre where he went for emergency surgery immediately. According to the doctors, his head was "almost completely detached from the base of his neck".

"Our ability to save the child was thanks to our knowledge and the most innovative technology in the operating room," he stated, adding that the doctor's team "fought for the boy's life". The surgeons also accepted that the recovery of the boy was no less than a miracle as there were&nbsp;only&nbsp;50 per cent chances of his survival. 
 
The operation happened last month, however, the results were not made public by the doctors till July. Recently, the hospital discharged Hassan with a cervical splint and the hospital stated that his recovery will still be monitored by the doctors. 
 
"The fact that such a child has no neurological deficits or sensory or motor dysfunction and that he is functioning normally and walking without any aid after such a long process is no small thing," said Dr Einav.

After many failed attempts to pull the octopus from the throat of the man, the endoscope was manoeuvred past the animal and then retroflexed, which allowed the doctors to extract the creature.

Then, the doctors used forceps to grasp the head of the octopus and pull it from the throat of the man. Two days after the surgery, the man recovered well and was discharged from the hospital.

<h2>Food obstructions - a common issue</h2>

According to the doctors present in the hospital, food obstructions are among the most common issues which are encountered at the facility. In around 10 per cent to 20 per cent of cases, endoscopic intervention is important, while 1 per cent of them need surgery, they stated.&nbsp;

“The ‘push technique’ is the primary method recommended with high success rates, however applying excessive force can cause oesophagal perforation,” the medical team stated.&nbsp;

AFP's fact-checkers have exposed a slew of cases around the world in which fraudsters impersonated doctors, fabricating their comments or endorsements to push out bogus treatments and products or to peddle propaganda.

The trend underscores how medical professionals are often sitting targets for online scammers seeking to profit off disinformation, which leaves their reputations tarnished, provokes harassment and, in some cases, legal challenges.&nbsp;

For ordinary consumers, the growing wave of impersonation scams poses financial risks and often jeopardises access to safe and reliable healthcare.

"I get impersonated (nearly) every month,"&nbsp;Thiravat Hemachudha, a Thai neurologist, told AFP.

"These fraudsters want to make money, so they cite renowned or credible health professionals to support their claims."

Thiravat's name has been falsely linked to Facebook ads and posts promoting a range of treatments, from diabetes to penile enlargement.&nbsp;It is unclear who was behind the disinformation, but he warned that it poses "significant threats to consumers' health".

<h2>'Miraculous cures'&nbsp;</h2>

In the Philippines,&nbsp;consumer Marissa David thought she had found the best cure for a benign lump in her body when she purchased a cream that a Facebook ad said was recommended by popular physician Willie Ong.&nbsp;

But the cream that cost $12.50, a small fortune for the Filipino mother, was ineffective and not endorsed by Ong.

"It's a lesson learned,"&nbsp;David told AFP.

"I should not trust so easily, especially if those products are not recommended by a doctor I personally know."

Winston Kilimanjaro Creones Tiwaquen, a Filipino doctor who is also a popular social media influencer, has been impersonated in Facebook pages promoting magnetic underwear, which they falsely claim enlarges male genitalia.

AFP, which has spotted similar impersonation scams in other countries such as Myanmar and Bulgaria, has a global team of journalists who work with Facebook owner Meta's third-party fact-checking programme to debunk misinformation.&nbsp;

AFP has debunked about half a dozen Facebook posts that used doctored videos of Ong or impersonated Tiwaquen, part of a deluge of internet content&nbsp;in the Philippines that promotes "doctor-recommended" quick-fix treatments for even complicated ailments.&nbsp;

"People often seek quick solutions and can fall prey to scams promising miraculous cures or easy remedies -- especially communities that lack access to reliable healthcare services," Patricia&nbsp;Schouker, a fellow at the Colorado-based Payne Institute, told AFP.&nbsp;

"Impersonating doctors gives these fraudsters an air of credibility&nbsp;and trustworthiness."

<h2>'Stand up to disinformation'&nbsp;</h2>

For doctors such as&nbsp;Natalia Solenkova, a Florida-based critical care specialist, such disinformation triggered aggressive online harassment.&nbsp;

Earlier this year, conservative commentators including American podcast host Joe Rogan amplified a&nbsp;screenshot of a fabricated tweet about the Covid-19 vaccine that used her name and Twitter handle.

"Knowing that he (Rogan) has millions and millions of followers, that felt threatening," Solenkova told the&nbsp;American Medical Association.

"That felt threatening to my career, threatening to my job, threatening to my reputation."&nbsp;

Rogan acknowledged his mistake but not before Solenkova was deluged with hateful messages.&nbsp;

"We (physicians) need to keep organising against disinformation," Solenkova said.

"We need to stand up to this disinformation and this harassment."&nbsp;

Some physicians like Ong, from the Philippines, have also battled legal threats over viral ads for a mixed nuts brand&nbsp;that he had nothing to do with.&nbsp;

The younger sister&nbsp;of&nbsp;the late Philippine president Benigno Aquino III&nbsp;asked Ong to cease and desist from using her name for the product's promotion on his Facebook page, reports said.

Ong clarified in a series of videos in April that the ads came from imposter pages on Facebook.&nbsp;

"I can't believe they didn't know those pages were fake," he said in one video.&nbsp;

"What's happening to me right now is too much... I can't believe it."&nbsp;

Meta says it views the "threat of scams seriously". It faces calls for more vigorous online policing from users and consumer activists.

"Platforms need to invest in robust content moderation systems to detect and remove fraudulent listings and can play a significant role in educating users about the risks," Schouker said.

"Addressing this issue requires a collective effort by platforms, regulators and law enforcement agencies."

Nigeria's doctors fume over five years of mandatory service

An artificial intelligence (AI) model has been created by scientists, doctors and researchers which can identify cancer accurately, marking a developmental stage which can speed up the diagnosis of the disease and fast-track treatment.

Cancer has become a leading cause of fatalities throughout the world, resulting in around 10 million deaths every year, which is one in six patients, according to the World Health Organization.

However, in many cases, cancer can be cured and lives can be saved if it is detected early and swift treatment is provided to patients.

Experts from Royal Marsden NHS foundation trust along with Imperial College London and the Institute of Cancer Research, London, designed the AI tool which can identify if abnormal growths seen on a person's CT scans are cancerous.

As per the study, the performance of the algorithm has been more efficient and effective compared to the current methods. The research's findings were published in the eBioMedicine journal of the Lancet.

“In the future, we hope it will improve early detection and potentially make cancer treatment more successful by highlighting high-risk patients and fast-tracking them to earlier intervention,” stated Dr Benjamin Hunter, a clinical research fellow at Imperial and a clinical oncology registrar who works at the Royal Marsden.

The research team used CT scans of around 500 patients who had large lung nodules to create an AI algorithm with the use of radiomics. Through the technique, vital information can be extracted from medical images that the human eye fails to easily spot.

A measure, known as area under the curve (AUC), was used in the study to test the model's effectiveness at predicting cancer.

If a model gets an AUC of 1 it will be considered, with 0.5 indicating that it is randomly guessing. The results of the study showed that the risk of cancer in each nodule can be identified by the AI model with an AUC of 0.87.

“According to these initial results, our model appears to identify cancerous large lung nodules accurately,” said Hunter. “Next, we plan to test the technology on patients with large lung nodules in the clinic to see if it can accurately predict their risk of lung cancer,” he added.

In Ireland, doctors removed 55 AA and AAA batteries from a woman's gut and stomach after she swallowed them in a deliberate act of self-harm.

According to a report published by the Irish Medical Journal on Thursday, the 66-year-old woman was getting treated at St. Vincent's University Hospital in Dublin after devouring an initially "unknown number" of cylindrical batteries, reports Science Alert

The doctor in their report said that this was the highest reported number of "batteries ingested at a single point in time."

The case perplexed the doctors as several reports published in medical journals mentioned instances of a child swallowing small, button-style batteries.&nbsp;

"The deliberate ingestion of multiple large AA batteries as a form of deliberate self-harm is an unusual presentation," the doctors reported.

In the most common cases of battery ingestion among kids, the batteries can sometimes pass through a child's body without causing damage. However, if they get stuck in the throat, they can cause severe and even life-threatening injuries, according to UCSF's Benioff Children's Hospitals.

This is because saliva kick-starts an electric current in the trapped batteries, spurring a chemical reaction that can burn the esophagus and can lead to severe tissue damage and bleeding.

"The potential of cylindrical batteries to result in acute surgical emergencies should not be underestimated," the case report states.

In the woman's case, an X-ray revealed that the batteries in her abdomen did not appear to be obstructing her gastrointestinal (GI) tract and no batteries showed signs of structural damage.

After a week of observation, the doctors performed laparotomy on the woman, in which surgeons made an incision to access her abdominal cavity. They found that the stomach, pulled down by the weight of the batteries, had become distended and stretched into the area above the pubic bone

They then cut a small hole in the stomach and removed the batteries from the organ.

You might want to wait, as a new study published in Hypertension, a journal of the American Heart Association has revealed that people who often take a nap have higher chances of developing blood pressure and having a stroke.&nbsp;

Reportedly, the study used data from over 360,000 participants and reached the conclusion. Blood, urine, and saliva samples in addition to information about the lifestyles of the participants were collected for the study.&nbsp;

Accordingly, individuals who took a frequent nap had a 12 per cent higher chance of developing blood pressure issues while it also increased the risk of stroke by 24 per cent. The study also noted that for individuals younger than 60, napping frequently increased the chance of developing high blood pressure by at least 20 per cent, when compared to non-napping people.&nbsp;

Organised at the ISRO Headquarters in Bengaluru, the event Health-Quality Upgradation Enabled through Space Technology (Health-QUEST) was aimed at percolating best practices in ISRO’s quality domain into emergency healthcare and critical healthcare departments for reducing mortality rates.

Notably, even the best healthcare systems in the world have an error rate of 8-10 per cent, whereas the aerospace industry and rocketry operate at zero per cent error, as even the most minor error can prove catastrophic. Speaking at the event, Dr Alexander Thomas, president, Association of Healthcare Providers India (AHPI), emphasised the importance of absorbing and implementing the stringent safety standards of the aerospace industry in the healthcare sector (particularly in the hospital emergency wards, accident wards and critical care units).&nbsp;

Listing out the areas of cooperation between ISRO and the Indian healthcare sector, he touched upon geo-mapping of accident and emergency care centres across the country, in order to have accurate information on the type of services and level of care available in the healthcare facilities. He also added the need to geo-tag ambulances and ICUs, besides the need to study the impact of climate change and its threat on health.&nbsp;

Addressing a gathering of Doctors from across medical domains and ISRO scientists, he touched upon how medical professionals could work together on Spacecraft design for India's highly-anticipated Gaganyaan(Human Spaceflight) mission. Elaborating on this, Somanath said that scientists and engineers were building machines, but lacked the feel of human beings (those who were going to use the equipment). He was saying this in light of the Gaganyaan Spacecraft that is being built to carry and house the Indian astronauts in space and return them to earth. Regarding the interactions with the four Indian astronauts, he mentioned receiving their constant feedback on equipment placement, lighting, software, displays, etc. onboard the spacecraft (simulator).
