The over 20 km-long Majlis Park-Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus section of Delhi Metro's Pink Line is all set to be thrown open to the public on Wednesday evening, with an end-to-end travel time of 34 minutes.

The new corridor, will also for the first time, connect the north and south campuses of the Delhi University, on the metro network, which can be commuted in 40 minutes.

With the opening of the 21.56 km-long section, the Delhi Metro's operational network will expand to nearly 252 km, a senior DMRC official said.

The new corridor is slated to be formally flagged off by Union Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs (Independent Charge) Hardeep Singh Puri and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Wednesday at 4:00 pm from the Metro Bhawan here.

Passenger services on the stretch will begin from 6 pm onwards on the same day from both Majlis Park and Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus stations simultaneously, the official said, adding that "the end-to-end travel time on this section of the Pink Line would be 34 minutes".

It would prove a big boon for commuters, especially students, who till now had to travel either by road from the North Campus or take the Airport Line metro till Dhaula Kuan and commute again on road.

The North Campus area of Delhi University already has a metro station -- Vishwavidyalaya, which falls on the Yellow Line that connects Samaypur Badli to Huda City Centre in Gurgaon.

"The ticket from Vishwavidyalaya station to Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus station will cost Rs 50. And, from Majlis Park station to South Campus station, it will cost Rs 40. On Sundays and national holidays anyway, the fare is less than the regular cost," the senior official said.

Azadpur Station (with Yellow Line) is one of the three interchange stations on the Pink Line stretch that opens on March 14, the other two being, Netaji Subhash Place (with Red Line) and Rajouri Garden (Blue Line).

The Commissioner for Metro Rail Safety (CMRS), which inspected the stretch from February 26-28, has given the clearance for the project.

This section, which has 12 stations, is part of the 59 km-long Majlis Park-Shiv Vihar corridor (Pink Line Line 7) of Delhi Metro's Phase 3. All the stations have platform-screen doors.

The stations are -- Majlis Park, Azadpur, Shalimar Bagh, Netaji Subhash Place, Shakurpur, Punjabi Bagh West, ESI Hospital, Rajouri Garden, Mayapuri, Naraina Vihar, Delhi Cantt and Durgabai Deshmukh South Campus.

Out of the 12 stations, eight are elevated and the rest underground. As with the recently-opened Magenta Line, broad-sized coaches from the new rolling stock will ply on the standard gauge Pink line.

Metro's new generation trains, which can run without drivers, will also run on this section where an advanced Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling technology that will facilitate the movement of trains with a frequency of 90 to 100 seconds will also be pressed into service.

However, for an initial period of two-three years, the trains will have drivers.

"For the first time travelators have been installed at the foot over bridges to facilitate interchange at Rajouri Garden and South Campus stations," the official said.

The 21.56 km-long corridor, once opened, will also reduce metro travel time between Dwarka 21 (Blue Line) and Rithala (Red Line) by over 16 minutes; and Rajouri Garden and Azadpur by nearly 23 minutes, the DMRC said.

This Holi, no Metro rides for Delhiites until 2.30 pm

It may not be a smooth transit for Delhi metro commuters heading to the railway stations/airport with a big baggage, as DMRC has restricted the weight of the luggage to 15kg.

Travellers using the Delhi Metro from select stations have been barred from carrying large bags, with authorities restricting the luggage size in view of security considerations, officials said.

The maximum luggage weight of a single bag has been capped at 15 kg by DMRC.

The Delhi Metro recently fixed steel frames at the x-ray baggage machines at five large stations of Chandni Chowk, Anand Vihar, Shahdara, Kashmere Gate and Barakhamba Road, stating that the passengers "can carry maximum luggage limit of length 60 cm, width 45 cm and height 25 cm".

From March, DMRC will extend the bar on oversized baggage at 15 more stations — Adarsh Nagar, Azadpur, Badarpur, Botanical Garden, Chawri Bazar, Dilshad Garden, Govindpuri, HUDA City Centre, Inderlok, Karol Bagh, Lal Quila, Nangloi, R K Ashram Marg, Rithala and New Delhi.

“Heavy and very heavy bags lead to two problems. At big and inter-change stations like Chandni Chowk and Kashmere Gate, the baggage line is so engaged that it is very hard to concentrate on all contents of a bag. This is a possible security scare,” a senior security official said.

The second reason, he said, is that x-ray machines break down quite often and require frequent servicing.

“At such times, jawans have to scan bags manually and that is, once again, a security scare. One miss and the results can be disastrous,” he added.

The over 150 stations of the Delhi Metro are the travel gateway for about 30 lakh passengers every day to various locations in the national capital region.

The 12.64-km stretch between Kalkaji and Noida’s Botanical Garden will be covered in 19 minutes. The route will have nine stations which include Kalindi Kunj, Jasola Vihar, Shaheen Bagh, Okhla Vihar, Jamia Millia Islamia, Sukhdev Vihar, Okhla NSIC, Kalkaji Mandir, Botanical Garden Metro station and Okhla Birds Sanctuary. The metro ride from Botanical Metro to Kalkaji Mandir will cost commuters Rs 30. The new route will be a great relief for people commuting from Noida to South Delhi and vice versa. With the Blue and Violet lines of the metro interchanging at Mandi House, it would take 52 minutes between Noida and South Delhi. The new magenta line will reduce this time to just 19 minutes. According to DMRC authorities, 10 trains would operate on the new line. The coaches will have LED information display, power charging capacity and colourful seats of different shades. The width of a coach is 3.2 metres which can accommodate 35-40 people extra in every coach of this line. One of the unique features of the new route is that the metro on the magenta line will run driverless. The Delhi Metro had said the trains would be fully automated, capable of running without a human in the driver's cab, but that a person would be placed in the cab for the first two to three years of operations. Also, Platform screen doors (PSDs) are being used for the first time to enhance the commuter safety.

Everything you would want to know about Delhi's driverless new Magenta line metro

The new Magenta Line of the Delhi Metro that will directly connect Kalkaji in south Delhi to Noida, has many firsts to its credit, including platform screen doors (PSDs) and a hi-tech signalling technology for movement of trains, officials said on Friday.

The 12.64-km section, part of the upcoming Botanical Garden (Noida)-Janakpuri West (Delhi) corridor, has nine stations and is set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 25.

"This Line will have many firsts to its credit. For the first time in India, trains will run unattended. The platform screen doors (PSDs) are being used here for the first time," DMRC chief spokesperson Anuj Dayal said.

PSDs, installed to enhance commuter safety, are glass- made screens installed near the edge of platforms that open only when a train arrives and shut after it departs.

"Besides, a new-age technology, Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling technology will be used that can facilitate movement of trains with a frequency of 90 to 100 seconds, will also be pressed into service," Dayal said.

He was interacting with reporters after a preview of the corridor, ahead of its mega launch on Christmas.

Initially trains will operate with the frequency of five minutes and 14 seconds on this section, the DMRC said.

After the new section of the Delhi Metro is opened, commuters will be able to travel directly to the Kalkaji Mandir Metro Station from Botanical Garden in 19 minutes. The travel time Blue and Violet lines of the metro takes 52 minutes with interchange point at the Mandi House station.

"The new line would be officially launched by the Hon'ble Prime Minister in the afternoon at the newly-built Kalkaji Metro Station of the Magenta Line. From 5 PM it would be open to the public," Dayal said.

Dayal and other DMRC officials also said that the recent accident at the Kalindi Kunj Metro depot was purely a "human error" during maintenance, and there was no reason to worry.

Metro's new generation trains, which can run without drivers, will run on this section aided by the CBTC signalling technology.

"The trains would essentially be driverless, but there would be roving attendants. We would keep this mechanism say for a year or two.

"We would get passengers feedback on this and once we realise that we have people's confidence, we will remove those attendants, to make them fully driverless," the chief spokesperson said.

A senior DMRC official, who was present at the interaction, said, "passengers safety is our utmost concern and it has been taken care of on this line".

While the Kalkaji Mandir station falls in Delhi, the Botanical Garden station is located in Noida.

The old Kalakaji Mandir station is part of the Violet Line (Kahmere Gate-Escorts Mujesar) and the old Botanical Garden is part of the Blue Line (Dwarka-Noida City Centre).

The Botanical Garden has been developed as the metro's first-ever inter-change station outside the boundaries of Delhi.

Dayal said the new line would also prove economical for commuters, besides saving time.

"The 28-km stretch between the Kalkaji Mandir and Botanical Garden costs Rs 50. Now, with direct connectivity, the ride has been reduced to 12 km, costing Rs 30," he said.

The DMRC authorities said that 10 trains would operate on this new line, while two would be kept on reserve.

The coaches running on this line have electronic information display, power charging capacity, including directly through USB ports, and colourful seats of different shades. They also have enhanced carrying capacity.

The new trains are also energy efficient and save about 20 per cent of energy, the DMRC said.

"The trains on this line will have six cars, four of them would be driving cars," Dayal said.

The new stations have been tastefully decorated, reflecting themes of nature, Yoga, and cultural landmarks.

At the new Kalkaji Mandir station, ceramic murals of the Lotus Temple, ISKCON Temple and nature-themed artworks, and paintings showing birds have been displayed.

Seven stations of the line are in Delhi - Kalindi Kunj, Jasola Vihar, Shaheen Bagh, Okhla Vihar, Jamia Milia Islamia, Sukhdev Vihar, Okhla NSIC and Kalkaji Mandir. Two stations are in Noida - Botanical Garden Metro station and Okhla Birds Sanctuary.

The ride from the Botanical Garden station to the Okhla Birds Sanctuary station offers breathtaking view of the sanctuary. Also, metro's third bridge over the Yamuna has come up at the Kalindi Kunj on this section. It runs parallel to the the Okhla Barrage.
