According to the media reports, Vinesh took some extreme steps to fall in the weight category of 50 kg, like cutting her hair, and even drawing some blood out of her veins. She also did jogging, skipping and cycling to reduce weight.

She took these extreme steps after her weight increased&nbsp;on Tuesday night (August 6), according to media reports. With all her efforts, the wrestler managed to cut down some of her weight, however, the last 100 gm could not be lost.

Another Indian wrestler, Ravi Dahiya, said that after finishing her bouts, Phogat went for the training and did not eat anything. She started the day on Wednesday (August 7) with training.

To compete in the 50kg category, Vinesh went through intense sauna sessions at the Paris Olympics and her coach earlier wanted to cut her hair to reduce around 50 grams but didn't do so.

Phogat is a three-time Olympian from Haryana and the first Indian woman wrestler to clinch a gold at the Commonwealth and Asian Games.

Hours before disqualification, Vinesh Phogat took extreme steps to reduce weight, drew blood from her veins

Pakistan's Supreme Court on Friday reserved its judgment in the hearing of a key case that would settle the issue of lifetime disqualification of some leading politicians, including former prime ministers Nawaz Sharif and Imran Khan.

The verdict is expected to determine once and for all the controversy around the period of disqualification under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution and the Elections Act 2017.

A 2018 judgment by a five-member bench of the apex court had declared that disqualification under Article 62(1)(f) was for life, but changes made in the Elections Act 2017 on June 26, 2023, by a coalition government led by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) restricted it to a five-year term only.

A seven-member bench, headed by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, conducted the hearing on Friday.

He also stated that discrepancies in the apex court's interpretation and the law could result in confusion in the upcoming general elections.

At the hearing's conclusion, the chief justice said a short order would be issued without specifying a time for its announcement.

"We will try to come up with a shorter order as soon as possible. Probably not today, but it will be very soon, God willing," he said.

During the hearing, which spanned several days, the court heard many lawyers, garnering their views on the duration of disqualification.

The remarks made by the chief justice and some other judges indicated they were not comfortable with the lifelong ban on convicted politicians, the Pakistani media reported.

However, it was not clear if the limit of disqualification should be imposed through a court order or an amendment to the Constitution.

Most of the arguments were in favour of nullifying the concept of the lifelong ban and limiting it to a five-year term. However, the chief justice repeatedly said that he also wanted to hear arguments supporting lifelong disqualification and asked lawyers to come forward.

Sharif, former prime minister and also a frontrunner for the fourth term in the February 8 general elections, was disqualified in the Panama Papers case in 2017. His rival Imran Khan, who was disqualified in the Toshakhana corruption case last year, also was hit by the same law.

However, Sharif got a kind of relief when his party-led government amended the election laws last year to limit the disqualification to five years, which allowed him to file nomination papers for the upcoming elections.

The controversy was not over as his candidature has been challenged as the interpretation of Article 62 (1) (f) clashed with the changes made in the Elections Act 2017. The outcome of the hearing would decide the future for both Sharif and Khan, as well as many other politicians.

Seventy-four-year-old Sharif's case was final until the period of disqualification was reduced. However, 71-year-old Khan's disqualification has not attained finality, and his appeal against it is still pending.

Former Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan's party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has decided to move election tribunals in the country a day after nomination papers of most of the party candidates were rejected. The list of rejected candidates includes Imran Khan as well.

Pakistani news outlet Dawn quoted PTI's central information secretary Raoof Hasan who said that all rejections will be challenged. He added that the appeals will first be made to election tribunals as per procedure and other options will be explored later.

“The candidates have collected the certified copies of ‘rejection decisions’ from respective ROs on Sunday and will begin filing appeals with the appellate tribunals from today,” he said, as quoted by Dawn.

Elections in Pakistan are due on February 8.

Pakistan: Imran Khan’s party to approach election tribunals against poll disqualification

Pakistan Occupied Kashmir's (PoK) High Court bench on Tuesday disqualified Prime Minister Sardar Tanveer Ilyas from the legislative assembly for contempt of court.

After the court's verdict, Ilyas won't be holding the office of PoK's prime minister and a new premier will be elected by the legislative assembly.

The courts of PoK had on Monday served separate notices to Ilyas asking him to explain his position over his “derogatory remarks about the superior judiciary in his speeches at public meetings”.

The notices, which were served through the PM's principal secretary, asked Ilyas to make separate appearances before the Supreme Court and the high court on Tuesday.

During a function held in Islamabad, Ilyas had indirectly held the judiciary responsible for affecting his government's functioning and interfering in the executive's domain through the grant of stay orders.

Ilyas had made a particular reference to a $15 million Saudi-funded education sector project, stating that it was in limbo because a stay order was issued on it by the court.

He also took strong exception to the “de-sealing by the courts of tobacco factories involved in tax evasion to the tune of billions of rupees”.

The high court's judgement was read out on Tuesday by Justice Chaudhry Khalid Rasheed, sentencing the PoK premier till the rising of the court.

After the announcement of the court's verdict, Ilyas - who was supposed to make an appearance before the Supreme Court – went to the Prime Minister’s House accompanied by the cabinet members.

Speaking on the court's verdict, PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry said that whether it was Pakistan's prime minister or that of PoK, respecting the court's decision was necessary.

“This country cannot be run by destroying the judicial system,” he stated, appealing to Ilyas to apologise and stating that he hoped the Supreme Court would give him relief.

He added that Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif should learn a lesson from the court's verdict.

Presenting the clip of the prime minister's speech in the court's order, the PoK court said that a discussion was held on the matter by the judges’ council “in view of its seriousness” and it was unanimously decided “it could not be overlooked because the dignity and authority of the courts was on stake and nobody could be allowed to undermine it”.

“However, […] before issuing contempt notice we are intended to ask the prime minister to appear in person and explain his position on the referred news,” the court stated. Identical observations were made by the high court.

“Prime Minister Tanveer Ilyas has directly threatened the superior judiciary and the language of his speech at a public meeting is highly derogatory, improper and indecently worded,” the order stated.

Not just the latest statement, but his “previous track record from several months is [also] objectionable, unbecoming and improper,” it further stated.

The order read that the high court judges’ council unanimously decided not to leave the matter unattended “simply by shutting [its] eye from contemptuous and derogatory statement of the person who is at the helm of affairs.”

“By showing magnanimity and judicial restraint, we have opted, in the beginning of the proceedings, to serve a notice on the prime minister to personally appear before the full court to explain his position,” it added.

Following his disqualification, Gandhi will not be able to contest elections for eight years unless a higher court stays his conviction and sentence. 
 
As per Section 8(3) of The Representation of the People Act, 1951, “A person convicted of any offence and sentenced to imprisonment for not less than two years shall be disqualified from the date of such conviction and shall continue to be disqualified for a further period of six years since his release.” 
 
The disqualification can be reversed if a higher court grants a stay on the conviction or decides the appeal in favour of the convicted lawmaker.

And Article 102 (1) (e) of the constitution states that if he/she is so disqualified by or under any law made by Parliament Explanation For the purposes of this clause, a person shall not be deemed to hold an office of profit under the Government of India or the Government of any State by reason only that he/she is a minister either for the Union or for such state.&nbsp;

<h2>Reactions to Gandhi's disqualification</h2>

The Congress party on Friday reacted sharply to Gandhi's disqualification from parliament by saying it will fight this battle both legally and politically. "We will fight this battle both legally &amp; politically. We will not be intimidated or silenced. Instead of a JPC into the PM-linked Adani MahaMegaScam, Rahul Gandhi stands disqualified. Indian Democracy Om Shanti," tweeted Jairam Ramesh, the Congress general secretary in charge of communications.&nbsp;

Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor said that he was stunned by the action against Gandhi and by its rapidity. "This is politics with the gloves off and it bodes ill for our democracy," he tweeted.&nbsp;

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that the party will hold a meeting at 5 pm to formulate a strategy as to how to proceed forward. "They (BJP) tried all ways to disqualify him. They don't want to keep those who are speaking the truth, but we will continue to speak the truth. We'll continue to demand JPC, if needed we'll go to jail to save democracy," Kharge said, the news agency ANI reported.&nbsp;

He is not even seeking an apology for his remarks. He also defamed the nation abroad," Union Minister&nbsp;Bhupender Yadav said.&nbsp;

On Monday, Islamabad court’s Chief Justice of Islamabad’s High Court Athar Minallah said that he was eligible to contest in future elections and added that the disqualification order only covers the current tenure in parliament.

Justice Minallah asked the former cricketer to refile his appeal in three days and then seek suspension of the order.

"Imran Khan is not disqualified for that election. There should be one standard for all. There is no need to rush in this case," he said, according to Geo News.

The court’s observations came over some confusion regarding the duration of Khan’s qualification, with some saying that he was barred from contesting elections for five years.

Toshakhana is a department under the administrative control of the Cabinet Division and stores precious gifts given to rulers, parliamentarians, bureaucrats, and officials by heads of other governments and states and foreign dignitaries. It was established in 1974.

The EC had said that Khan failed to disclose the proceeds of the sale of state gifts that he purchased from the Toshakhana.

&nbsp;Pakistani law does not bar lawmakers from selling such gifts but hiding these transactions is illegal.

The row over Toshakhana case comes amidst Pakistan’s political turmoil, with Khan, who was ousted in April after losing a no-confidence vote in Parliament, seeking snap elections.

The Premier League board has disqualified Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich as a director at the English top-flight club, the league said in a statement on Saturday.

The move comes after the billionaire Russian had sanctions imposed on him by the British government after Moscow's invasion of Ukraine.

"Following the imposition of sanctions by the UK Government, the Premier League Board has disqualified Roman Abramovich as a Director of Chelsea Football Club," the Premier League said.

Chelsea can continue playing games and pay their players and staff but cannot transfer players in or out as the government tries to prevent Abramovich from benefiting in any way.

Thanathorn, 40, the leader of the progressive Future Forward Party, has emerged as one of the most prominent opponents of a government headed by former junta ruler Prayuth Chan-ocha after the new opposition party came a surprise third in an election in March.

The Constitutional Court found Thanathorn guilty of holding shares in a media company after registering his candidacy for the election to formally end five years of military rule.

In its ruling, the court said the evidence against Thanathorn outweighed that in his favour.

Thanathorn had denied the accusation, saying he transferred his shares before beginning the campaign.

Thanathorn has been a fierce critic of the army's involvement in politics and did particularly well among young voters in the election from which the pro-military party was declared the winner after a disputed ballot count.

Ahead of the court ruling Thanathorn thanked supporters at the court and said: "The Future Forward Party is a journey... All of us will continue fighting and keep moving forward.

Future Forward is part of an opposition alliance that disputed the vote count and accused the army of writing the electoral rules to ensure that Prayuth, the former military leader, would remain as prime minister.

The court had earlier suspended Thanathorn from parliament pending the verdict to this case.

Thanathorn’s party won 80 out of 500 available seats in the Lower House of the Thai parliament.

The Supreme Court of India on Tuesday refused to give its verdict on the disqualification issue stating that the government must create a law that should bar criminals from contesting polls, news agency ANI reported.&nbsp;

"Parliament must ensure that criminals must not come to politics," Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra noted while reading out the verdict on PIL seeking to disqualify candidates contesting polls. &nbsp;

The bench said that informed choice is the corner stone of democracy and termed criminalisation of politics of the largest democracy as "unsettling". 
The apex court favoured wider publicity, through print and electronic media about the antecedents of candidates affiliated to political parties.

"Political parties shall be obligated to put all information about their candidates on their websites," it stated.

The top court described corruption as "economic terrorism" adding that the candidates will have to inform the party about any corruption/criminal cases pending.&nbsp;

A bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud had on July 9 reserved the order on the PIL filed by BJP leader and advocate Ashwini Upadhyay seeking to bar lawyer-lawmakers (MPs, MLAs, MLCs) from practising in courts during their tenure in the legislature.

The bench had earlier taken note of the Centre's submission that an MP or an MLA is an elected representative and not a full-time employee of the government, hence the plea was not maintainable.&nbsp;

In August, CJI Misra had pressed for the creation of a law that would bar candidates with criminal records from contesting polls.&nbsp;

Supreme Court refuses to bar tainted lawmakers from contesting polls, puts onus on Parliament 

Pakistan's former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif said on Sunday that he plans to challenge the disqualification verdict for him, while addressing a rally in &nbspMansehra in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.&nbsp

"This law, this decision [to disqualify] would have to be taken to the assembly and changed. For that, I will need your vote," The Dawn reported Nawaz, as saying.

The disqualification of 20 AAP MLAs was deliberately delayed due to the hidden alliance between Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), the Congress party alleged.&nbsp;

BJP, AAP 'hidden alliance' delayed disqualification of MLAs: Congress

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal today alleged that bypolls to 20 Assembly seats have been &quot;imposed&quot; on the people of the national capital and it would &quot;hamper&quot; development works for the next two years.

Maryam&nbsp;said to be groomed by Sharif as his political heir, told Geo News that her father, who was re-elected recently as the President of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz, has been disqualified but not discredited, despite many attempts by their enemies.

But 44-year-old said that she does not understand the dynamics of getting justice in the country.

&quot;If you criticise, then you won&#39;t get justice, but if you don&#39;t criticise then you will get justice? What is the standard of justice,&quot; she asked. &quot;Our point of view is that there lies anger on the other side and the verdict was announced in haste.&quot;

Just because the names appeared on the Panama Papers case it did not mean that those people were &#39;necessarily involved in corruption or any wrongdoing,&#39;&nbsp;she said.

Maryam said the case was being used to humiliate the Sharif family. &quot;We were asked private questions such as &#39;why does daughter live with her father? Why did a father give gifts to his daughter? Why did a son give money to his father?&quot;

We were also openly labelled to be &#39;don&#39;, &#39;Sicilian mafia&#39;&nbsp;and &#39;Godfather&#39;. Everyone saw the murder of justice in the court, she added.

On the options available to her father in the current political scenario, she said: &#39;Mian sahab has all the options.&#39;

When asked if Sharif has no fear of being jailed, she said: &quot;We have been there and done that,&quot; recalling that her family members have been imprisoned as well as exiled in the past.

&quot;There is no allegation of any corruption or kickback against him,&quot; she said.

&quot;We are asked time and again where the money has come from? How did Hussain and&nbsp;Hassan become billionaires at such a young age,&quot; she said.
