Rajasthan skipper Ajinkya Rahane blamed himself for his team's seven-wicket defeat at the hands of Kolkata in their Indian Premier League (IPL) game on Wednesday night.

"I feel it was a different wicket from what we played on against Delhi Daredevils. It was slow and ball was also keeping low. I feel it was my responsibility to take that innings forward," Rahane told reporters after the game here at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

"It is hard to recover from slow start because T20 is all about one or two big overs. I was batting well and wanted to continue till the 14th or 15th over," Rahane added.

Asked if his bowlers should be blamed for failing to defend a modest target of 161, Rahane said,"Not really, our bowlers have done a good job in all three matches. In T20 sometimes you go for runs but we have a good combination. When you lose people start talking about bad bowling or batting."&nbsp

IPL 2018: Dinesh Karthik hits six to finish off in style as Kolkata beat Rajasthan by 7 wickets

Dinesh Karthik-led Kolkata faces Rahane-led Rajasthan tonight at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium, Jaipur.

Kolkata won the previous clash against Delhi by 71 runs and due to this high margin, Kolkata have managed to climb up on the points table following a better Net Run Rate.

Performance wise, Kolkata team has improved in all the categories if you compare it to the previous seasons. The batting and bowling strength was good on papers and they have replicated the same in the fields.

The intent of winning with the scope of improvement makes the team a strong contender for the IPL 2018 title.

The spinners are the core strength of the team, in the presence of Kuldeep Yadav and Piyush Chawala. They have taken wickets whenever it was required.

Under-10 star Shivam Mavi took the wicket of Gautam Gambhir in the last clash which is appreciable but Dinesh Karthik can consider replacing Shubman Gill with another all-rounder.

Probable XI of Kolkata (TBC):

Sunil Narine, Chris Lynn, Robin Uthappa, Nitish Rana, Dinesh Karthik (c), Shubman Gill, Andre Russell, Shivam Mavi, Piyush Chawla, Tom Curran, Kuldeep Yadav

Also, other bowlers like Sunil Narine and Andre Russell have given immense support.

In the last clash, Andre Russell played at a strike rate 341.67 which means, 41 runs off just 12 balls.

On the other hand, Rajasthan have definitely marked a return after serving two-year ban but it seems they haven't arrived yet. Out of three matches, they have won two matches, out of which one was with the help of DLS method.

Ajinkya needs to strategize and then decide how to go about today's game to earn two points, otherwise, it will very difficult to solidify the position in the top four.

According to me, the middle order is massive, Sanju Samson has played quite good in all the matches, however, the return on investment on Ben Stokes is very less.

Though Rajasthan have settled with the current playing XI but the team is waiting for the Jofra Archer's recovery.

Probable XI of Kolkata (TBC):

Ajinkya Rahane (c), D'Arcy Short, Sanju Samson, Ben Stokes, Rahul Tripathi, Jos Buttler, Krishnappa Gowtham, Ben Laughlin, Shreyas Gopal, Dhawal Kulkarni, Jaydev Unadkat

Although Rajasthan's record at Jaipur is quite good they have won three games but Kolkata's record is comparatively, as they won just one game here at Sawai Mansingh Stadium.

IPL 2018: Match preview of Kolkata vs Rajasthan

Several eyebrows were raised from different quarters when Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) announced Dinesh Karthik as its new skipper, replacing Gautam Gambhir, for the XIth edition of Indian Premier League (IPL).

However, his splendid knock in recently concluded Nidahas Trophy, which took India to an impossible victory, has ended all the speculations being raised on his batting ability.

His brilliant cameo of 29 runs off just 8 balls stole all the limelight as he hit a last-ball six to power India to a four-wicket win.

But in IPL, it will be Karthik's consistency to score runs and cricketing experience which KKR will be counting on.

The two-time champions will be entering the upcoming edition with lightest squad of only 19 players making their way into the franchise.

Hence, it would be fascinating to see how KKR performs under Karthik's leadership.

During the IPL auctions, Kolkata invested a lot on young uncapped talent, with India U-19 stars Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi making their way to the team.

Nagarkoti and Mavi impressed with their speeds in the ongoing U-19 World Cup and were bought by KKR for Rs 3.6 crore and Rs 3 crore respectively.

Apart from the two speedsters, KKR also bought U-19 top-order batsman Shubman Gill who scored three fifties in four matches at the U-19 World Cup.

The franchise spent Rs 1.8 crore to buy his services for the upcoming season.

However, the strength in the squad, once again, lies in the spin bowling department.

The franchise retained West Indies off-spinner Sunil Narine, who became one of the key figures in the Gambhir era. With an uncanny ability to take wickets in crucial moments, Narine is surely one player on which the team can reply on.

After Narine, KKR also retained Piyush Chawla and Kuldeep Yadav via Right-to-Match which will further add to their spin bowling arsenal.

Another smart buy of KKR was batsman Chris Lynn. The Australian explosive was bought for Rs 9.6 crore and he can be a one-man army for the side.

Jamaican first-class cricketer Andre Russell will also remain Karthik’s go-to option in this edition of the cash-rich tournament.

Meanwhile, the one gap which KKR failed to fill is of having any leadership figure in the squad. After Gambhir’s departure, KKR should have looked for a player who can help the side get stability during crucial stages.

Dinesh Karthik current form is a positive development for the side but it will be interesting to see him perform the role of captain.

Another loose area in the team is of having only 19 players in the squad, and with a long tournament in hand, a weak bench strength might cause troubles for them.

Even if one or two players pick up an injury, the side will find it hard to find replacements in the bench.

But overall, the side is strong on spin

IPL 2018: Squad analysis of KKR — 'Karthik's Knight Riders'

Dinesh Karthik clinched an almost next to impossible win for India after he smashed a last-ball six to seal the Nidahas Trophy title on Sunday.

The wicketkeeper-batsman played a thrilling knock of 29 runs of just 8 balls, with the last ball becoming a lifetime memory for Karthik and the rest of the world.

With just five runs needed off one delivery, the spectators in the crowd and viewers had their eyes set on Bangladesh pacer Soumya Sarkar and Dinesh Karthik.

But the case was completely different for Indian skipper Rohit Sharma who missed out Karthik's sensational six.

When asked the reason for missing the main ball of the final T20 match, Rohit revealed that it wasn't a deliberate miss.

“I had gone to wear pads for the Super Over. I thought there’s a possibility of a Super Over. I was wearing my pads as there were chances of a Super Over if there was a four (hit on the last ball). Hence, I did not watch the last ball,” said Rohit during the post-match press conference.

“But the way we celebrated in the dressing room, I knew Dinesh had hit a six and we had won the final. I didn’t watch the last ball,” concluded Rohit.

However, the skipper lauded Karthik's ability to handle pressure, saying, "he has batted in that position in a list of games for his state teams. Even when he was playing for Mumbai Indians (in the Indian Premier League) with me, I knew his ability with the bat.

Dinesh, who played at an average of 362.50, hit a six over extra cover to finish the job in emphatic style.

Some even compared his winning stroke to former Indian skipper MS Dhoni, who is regarded as the best finisher in the cricket world.
He said, "What an amazing win. Shows the strength of our good domestic cricket. I congratulate everyone for this victory as it shows the hardwork done by every individual involved in BCCI." He appreciated Dinesh Karthik for his efforts in the death overs that helped the team in achieving the set target of 166 runs, he said, "Dinesh Karthik played very well under pressure." Dinesh Karthik played at a strike rate of 362.50 and was honoured with the man of the match award

Dinesh Karthik blasted 29 off just 8 balls and inspired team India to win the finals of Nidahas Trophy T20 tri-series at the R. Premadasa Stadium on Sunday. Dinesh Karthik to lead Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2018

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Tuesday named Dinesh Karthik as a replacement for the wicketkeeper-batsman Wriddhiman Saha, who injured himself during a training session last week ahead of the second Test against South Africa.

Saha is also not part of the team playing the ongoing second Test due to the hamstring injury he suffered on January 11.

"The All-India Senior Selection Committee has named Dinesh Karthik as the replacement for Wriddhiman Saha for the third and final Test against South Africa. He is set to join the team before the third Test," said BCCI Acting Secretary Amitabh Choudhary.

The 32-year-old Karthik has played 23 Tests for India but his last five-day appearance for the team was back in 2010 against Bangladesh.

He has 51 catches and five stumpings to his credit.

Meanwhile, Saha broke former Test captain MS Dhoni's record of most dismissals by an Indian wicketkeeper in a single Test when he claimed 10 catches in the series opener in Cape Town.

However, he failed to make an impact with the bat registering a duck in the first innings and managing just 8 from the second as India lost by 72 runs.

The third and final Test of the series is scheduled to be held in Johannesburg from January 24.

Injured Wriddhiman Saha to be replaced by Dinesh Karthik for 3rd Test

India produced a professional performance under pressure to beat New Zealand by six wickets in a must-win game and level three-match series 1-1 here today.

Paceman Bhuvneshwar Kumar (3/45) led an inspired Indian bowling effort to restrict New Zealand to a modest 230 for nine. Later, Shikhar Dhwawan (68 off 84 balls) and Dinesh Karthik (64 not out off 92) struck timely half-centuries, enabling the hosts to complete the chase in 46 overs.

The series decider will be played in Kanpur on October 29.

There was a slight doubt whether the second ODI here will go ahead as planned after pitch curator Pandurang Salgaoncar was suspended for allegedly agreeing to tampering with the pitch in a TV sting operation.

However, the game began on time after ICC match referee Chris Broad inspected the pitch.

India, who had to bounce back following their shock loss in the series opener, proved their mettle with an all-round effort.

The chase was comfortable for India despite losing Rohit Sharma cheaply for the second time in the series.

Dhawan was back to his best and played shots all around the ground enroute to his 22 ODI fifty. His sublime innings comprised five fours and couple of sixes including the one he hit over midwicket.

The southpaw shared a 57-run stand Virat Kohli (29) before adding 66 runs with Karthik, who too played a valuable knock.

Karthik, playing at number four after coming in at five in the previous game, grabbed the opportunity with a ninth ODI fifty.

After Dhawan's departure, Karthik and Hardik Pandya (30) forged a 59-run stand to secure the game for their team.

Earlier, Kumar produced a fine swing bowling display while his pace colleague Jasprit Bumrah (2/38)) and young leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal (2/36) picked up two wickets apiece as Indian bowlers came out determined after being asked to bowl.

Left-arm spinner Axar Patel (1/54) too justified the team management's decision to play him in place of Kuldeep Yadav, by removing the well settled Tom Latham (38).

The Indian bowlers had New Zealand under their mercy from the onset, picking up wickets at regular intervals to reduce the visitors to 58 for four inside 16 overs.

The hosts did not allow the New Zealand batsmen to settle down at the Maharashtra Cricket Association stadium.

New Zealand suffered a disastrous start as Kumar and Bumrah wreaked havoc by removing their first three batsmen inside the opening seven overs.

Kumar gave perfect start to India by removing the opening duo of Martin Guptill (11) and Colin Munro (10) quickly.

Bumrah then had skipper Kane Williamson (3) LBW, leaving the visitors tottering at 27 for three.

While Guptill nicked one to Mahendra Singh Dhoni behind the stumps, Williamson was trapped in front of the wicket by Bumrah with New Zealand struggling at 25 for two.

The visitors reviewed Williamson's decision but that went in vain.

Munro, who hit a towering six during his brief stay, was the next to depart as Kumar went through his defence.

In-form Latham and Ross Taylor (21) too failed to repeat their last match's exploits when they conjured a 200-run stand in a winning cause.

Taylor, who struck two fours and looked in set for a big knock, was dismissed by Pandya in the 16th over as the right-handed batsman edged one to Dhoni while trying to hook a Pandya delivery.

Latham stuck just two fours, a cut and a pull, and partially tried to steer his side out of trouble with his trademark sweep and reverse-sweep shots.

But the southpaw's stay was cut short when he was bowled by Patel across the stumps while the batsman went for a sweep.

Henry Nicholas (42) and Colin De Grandhomme (41) then tried to resurrect the Kiwi innings by adding 47 runs for the sixth wicket before the partnership was broken by Kumar.

Chahal then took two consecutive wickets in the 44th over by dismissing Grandhomme and Adam Milne (0) to stand in chance for a hat-trick which didn't happen.

Towards the end, Mitchell Santner's 38-ball 29 and Tim Southee's unbeaten 25 helped New Zealand reach the 230-run mark. PTI

PTI
