Due to the reduced visibility, Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport issued an advisory over the possible impact on flight operations. Additionally, at least 20 trains were delayed across various parts of the country due to limited visibility.
In the advisory, the Delhi airport said that flights that are not compliant with CAT III may be affected. Aircraft with CAT III allow the planes to land in reduced visibility conditions. 
The advisory also advised passengers to contact the airline for the latest flight information. IndiGo airline also urged passengers to check their flight status before leaving for the airport.

Delhi’s air quality remained in the “very poor" category at 388 on Sunday (Dec 22) with a thin layer of fog engulfing the national capital and reducing visibility amid the cold wave conditions. The city recorded a "severe" Air Quality Index (AQI) of 420 at 7 am, however, it fell back to the "very poor" category.
The national capital recorded a minimum temperature of 8 degrees Celsius at 7 am on Sunday (Dec 22). According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the maximum temperature for the day is expected around 24 degrees Celsius.

The air quality in the national capital has been constantly deteriorating over the last week as windspeed dropped. 
Delhi recorded an average AQI of 370 on Saturday (Dec 21), falling in the “very poor” category as per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), while Thursday (Dec 19) and Friday (Dec 20) recorded air quality over 400 in the “severe” category.
On Sunday (Dec 22) morning, Delhi recorded AQI above 400 at various stations. An AQI of 427 was recorded at Anand Vihar, 441 at Jahangirpuri, 430 at Ashok Vihar, 432 at Bawana and 429 at Dwarka Sector 8. While IGI Airport (T3) recorded an AQI of 372 and Okhla Phase 2 recorded 390.
Delhi imposes Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) Stage III measures if AQI records Above 400 which falls in the “severe” category. Residents have been advised to remain indoors, especially those falling into vulnerable categories and having respiratory conditions.

The weather department has predicted light rain or drizzle in the national capital on Monday (Dec 23) which may help in lowering the AQI levels in the city. The minimum temperature is expected to settle at 7 degrees Celsius, while the maximum is likely to record 22 degrees Celsius.
Dense and moderate fog is predicted in Delhi on Christmas Eve and the day of Christmas, with minimum temperatures hovering around 8 degrees Celsius on both days.

The Met department has predicted a significant dip in the temperatures in Delhi from December 10, with the mercury touching as low as 3 degrees Celcius.

Cold wave conditions are likely to develop in the northern belt, including Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Western Uttar Pradesh, and remain till December 14. IMD has also predicted snowfall in the northern hills as a result of the western disturbance.&nbsp;

“The cold wave will first hit Rajasthan, followed by Punjab and Haryana,” Naresh Kumar told ANI.

A dense fog warning has also been issued across northern India on December 9 and 10, which may cause reduced visibility and disrupt transportation.

Delhi woke up to a dense fog as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert on Monday (Nov&nbsp;18)&nbsp;after visibility dropped to 150 metres. The road, rail, and air traffic in the national capital and nearby regions are likely to be affected.

“There are chances of dense to very dense fog in Delhi on Monday. An orange alert has thus been issued, with smog expected later in the day too,” said an IMD official, as per an HT report.

According to the weather department, Delhi has also observed a dip in the maximum temperatures since Sunday&nbsp;(Nov&nbsp;17). The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to remain between 28 to 30 degrees Celcius and 12 to 17 degrees Celcius respectively, as per IMD. The fog is likely to reduce in the evening, as per the weather forecast.

Dense to very dense fog is also expected in other North Indian regions including Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh, North Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Bihar in the early morning and late night hours of Monday&nbsp;(Nov&nbsp;18). These weather conditions are likely to affect the visibility in these regions.

According to the weather department, temperatures are likely to fall by 2-3 degrees Celsius in Northwestern parts of the country over the next five days.

Night temperature&nbsp;is expected to stay between&nbsp;2-5 degrees Celsius in isolated pockets of north Rajasthan, and south Haryana, while in Punjab, Chandigarh, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, remaining parts of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh it&nbsp;will remain in the range of 6-10 degrees.

“These are below normal by 2- 4 degree Celsius in isolated pockets of south Haryana, south Uttar Pradesh and north Rajasthan. Today, the lowest minimum temperature of 2.4 degree Celsius was reported at Bikaner (West Rajasthan) and Kanpur (East Uttar Pradesh),” said the IMD.

“Dense to very dense fog conditions are very likely to prevail for a few hours in the night/morning in some parts of Uttar Pradesh during Friday and Sunday morning and in isolated pockets for subsequent three days while dense to very dense fog conditions are also very likely to prevail in morning hours in isolated pockets over Uttarakhand till January 23,” IMD added.

The weather department said any respite from cold waves and frigid temperatures is only expected after January 25. &nbsp;Moderate rainfall and snowfall is also expected over the Western Himalayan Region from January 25 to 31.

The IMD made it clear that no part of the country will experience cold waves after January 25.

Meanwhile, dense fog led to cancellations and delay of several flights at the Delhi international airport.

"Cold-day conditions are very likely in some to many parts of Delhi on December 30 and 31," the IMD said.

"Fog conditions at IGIA (Indira Gandhi International Airport) improved significantly in the morning, with the lowest visibility at 150 metres in dense fog," the IMD said earlier.&nbsp;

Delhi weather: IMD issues cold wave alert for city with ‘dense to very dense fog’ likely in next two days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for dense fog which has blanketed parts of north India in the past few days – especially Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh. 
 
“Dense Fog Advisory for Punjab, Haryana, Delhi Uttar Pradesh, north Rajasthan and north Madhya Pradesh: Be careful while driving or outing through any transport. Use fog lights while driving. Be in touch with airlines, railways, and state transport for your journey schedule," wrote the weather office on social media platform X. 
 
The national capital remained covered with a thick blanket of fog which led to a delay of more than a hundred flights as the visibility remained low in the national capital. The Delhi airport on Thursday (Dec 28) reported that nearly 134 domestic and international flights were delayed, and 35 international departures and 28 international arrivals remained affected. 
 
Meanwhile, there were delays in 43 domestic departures and 28 domestic arrivals on Friday (Dec 28). The New Delhi Railway Station also faced a similar situation when 22 trains were delayed which left passengers stranded in the biting cold.

A marginal improvement was reported in Delhi's air quality on Friday (Dec 29) as the average Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 356. Even though there was little improvement, the air quality continued to remain in the "very poor" category for the next two days. 
 
“The reason the fog situation saw some improvement on Thursday was due to overnight winds in several areas. The wind speed on Wednesday night reached up to 8 kmph, so the fog dissipated. However, on Friday the wind speed will drop,” said Kuldeep Srivastava, a scientist with India Meteorological Department (IMD), while speaking to The Times Of India. 
 
“We have issued the red warning for Friday, suggesting that the time between 4 am to 10 am could see accidents as visibility will be very low. So, unless it’s very essential, do not take out your vehicle at this time,” Srivastava added. Meanwhile, the IMF issued an orange alert for dense to moderate fog on Saturday (Dec 30).

<h2>Air quality likely to deteriorate further</h2>

The Met department on Thursday (Dec 28) released INSAT imagery in which a dense fog layer was seen over north India, which affected the regions in Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and northwest Madhya Pradesh. 
 
The dense fog created low visibility conditions in these regions which led to traffic disruptions and accidents. Extending its warning, the IMD predicted dense fog over Punjab and Haryana for the next five days. 
 
For the next three days, Uttar Pradesh is likely to witness dense fog due to which guidelines have been issued by the UP State Road Transport Corporation for bus operations in low visibility conditions.

Emissions from firecrackers if burnt on December 31 will further deteriorate air quality… The predominant surface wind is likely to be from the east-southeast direction in Delhi-NCR with a wind speed of 6-4 kmph with partly cloudy sky with dense to very dense fog at most places in the morning on December 29,” predicted the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology's air quality early warning system.

However, as per the commuters, much lower visibility was recorded in various parts of the national capital. After weeks of good air quality, the city's air quality also saw a sharp decline.&nbsp;

Delhi: Passengers suffer as flight gets delayed due to bad weather

"Around 97 per cent of these 450 flights were either departing or arriving beyond their scheduled time due to dense fog that remained till around 10.20 am. Rest were either diverted or cancelled," the official said.

Departures were largely put on hold between 5.30 am and 10.20 am. Arrivals were happening only intermittently between 6 am and 7.20 am, another official said.

Five flights were diverted between 5.30 am and 10.20 am from the airport. One of the flights was coming from Singapore and it was diverted to Kolkata, he said.&nbsp;

Four flights coming from Bangkok, Dubai, Guwahati and Muscat, respectively were diverted to Jaipur between 7.30 am and 10.20 am, he said.

"Very few aircraft are departing and that too on the basis of their size, visibility and ATC (air traffic control) clearance for taking off," the official said.

At the Delhi airport, the minimum runway visibility required to take off is 125 metres.

The airport was facing low visibility conditions since 4 am due to dense fog.

"The visibility significantly improved between 9.20 am and 10.20am. This allowed us to resume departures properly from 10.20 am onward," he said.

Vistara Airlines tweeted at 8.23am, "Due to dense fog and poor visibility in Delhi, delays are expected for both arrivals and departures with likely consequential impact on flights across the network."

"Currently, flight departures from Delhi are on hold and will resume by 0930 hrs subject to weather clearance," it added.

Jet Airways tweeted at 6.33am that some of its flights had been affected due to dense fog at Delhi and Bengaluru airports.
