Kenya’s Charles Matata delivered a record-breaking performance to win the men’s elite title at the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon 2026 on Sunday, clocking 58 minutes and 52 seconds to rewrite the course record. However, the Kenyan runner believes his achievement is only another step towards what he can accomplish in the future. Matata bettered the previous course record of 58:53, set by Ethiopia’s Amedework Walelegn in 2020, by one second. His performance also marked a personal best in the half marathon, capping an impressive outing on the streets of the national capital. Speaking after his victory, Matata revealed that he had arrived in Delhi well prepared, having maintained his fitness following his previous racing commitments in Riga. The Kenyan was familiar with the course, having finished second at the Delhi Half Marathon in 2023, and believed he could improve on his earlier performance. “I was not expecting to break the course record, but I was expecting to run 59:20. Because today’s weather was very good, and the course I knew because I was here in 2023, I had a very strong mind that maybe I would run my personal best,” Matata said.
‘No human is limited’: Matata eyes more sub-59-minute runs
For Matata, the course record is not a reason to slow down. The Kenyan believes consistent training, patience and the willingness to push his limits can help him achieve more in the coming races. Asked whether he expects to run more half marathons in the 58-minute range, Matata was emphatic about his ambitions. “I believe so because no human is limited, and I am ready,” he said. The runner credited his training routine and the competitive environment within his group for helping him develop the confidence to aim higher. He also pointed to the influence of his brother, Alex Matata, who won the men's elite title at the 2025 edition of the Delhi Half Marathon. “If someone like Kiplimo can run 56-something, why not me?” Matata said, referring to the performances at the top end of men's half-marathon running. Also Read: Kenya's Charles Matata sets course record as Wudinesh Alemu wins women's tile at Delhi Half Marathon; Ankita smashes personal best
How Matata approached his solo charge
One of the defining moments of Matata’s race came when he moved to the front after approximately eight kilometres and continued to lead for the remainder of the contest. If we have patience and they are not so strong, and we are strong, we decide to just move on,” he explained. For Matata, the objective is not limited to setting records. The emphasis is on maintaining the discipline required to compete for the top positions. “If we are focusing on being a winner, not only to break the course record, but being a winner, you have to focus, and you have to aim to become top three,” he said. He added that he and his brother follow a similar approach during training in Kenya, continuing to push themselves even when others in their group struggle to maintain the pace. “That is our slogan, because even my brother, he does the same as me,” Matata said.
A possible Matata double act in Delhi?
Alex Matata’s victory in 2025 and Charles Matata’s record-breaking triumph in 2026 have given the family consecutive men's elite titles at the Delhi Half Marathon. The prospect of both brothers competing in the same race in the future is one that Charles is keen to explore. Reflecting on the possibility, he suggested that he and his brother had already discussed the idea of returning together, hinting that a future appearance could be on the cards.

‘No human is limited’: Charles Matata reveals mindset behind setting Delhi Half Marathon 2026 course record

Kenya’s Charles Matata delivered a record-breaking performance to win the men’s title at the 21st edition of the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon (VDHM) 2026. Ethiopia’s 19-year-old Wudinesh Alemu Keneni claimed the women’s crown, overcoming several pre-race favourites in the World Athletics Gold Label Road Race.
Charles Matata smashes Delhi Half Marathon record
The 29-year-old Kenyan arrived in Delhi with strong credentials, having previously finished second at the event in 2023. A seasoned competitor with around a dozen half marathons to his name, Matata broke the 60-minute barrier for the first time earlier in 2026, winning the Rimi Riga Marathon in May with a time of 59:15. He also had a family legacy to uphold. His twin brother, Alex Matata, won the 2025 Delhi Half Marathon in 59:50. Favourable weather and an early-morning start helped the elite men maintain a blistering pace. Pacer Emmanuel Yegon led the field through the opening 5K in 13:56, putting the runners on course for a potential record. Drawing on his experience, Charles gradually separated himself from the chasing pack, which included Ethiopia’s two-time champion Birhanu Legese. The Kenyan crossed the 10K mark in 27:41 and reached 15K in 41:39, strengthening his chances of rewriting the course record. His 20K split of 55:53 confirmed that a historic finish was within reach. Matata eventually crossed the finish line in a personal best of 58:52, narrowly improving on the previous event record of 58:53 set by Amedework Walelegn in 2020.Kenya dominated the men’s race, sweeping all three podium positions. Samwel Nyamai Mailu finished second in 59:24, followed by Stanley Mburu in 59:33. Legese’s attempt to secure a third Delhi Half Marathon title ended in fourth place, nearly a minute behind Mburu. An elated Charles said, “I came to Delhi well prepared, having maintained my fitness as I knew I would be racing here. I was hoping to run in the 59-minute range, but the excellent weather and my familiarity with the course from 2023 helped me deliver an even stronger performance and set a course record. I believe no human is limited, and I am ready to push myself further.” Reflecting on his return to competitive running after an injury, Samwel said, “My comeback was not easy, as I suffered an injury in February that forced me to cancel several races and a marathon. I am grateful to have returned strongly and finished on the podium,”
Wudinesh Alemu stuns favourites to win women’s title
Ethiopia’s Wudinesh Alemu Keneni produced an impressive performance to win the women’s title, despite having limited experience in half-marathon racing. Before arriving in Delhi, the teenager had competed in just one half marathon. Primarily a track athlete, she finished third at the Oysho Cardiff Half Marathon last year in 1:08:08. Kenya’s Irine Cheptai took the initiative early, leading her compatriots through the first 5K in 15:55. Alemu remained in the leading group before making her decisive move during the final quarter of the race. Cynthia Chepkwony, Selah Busienei and Cheptai stayed within striking distance, trailing the Ethiopian by approximately 50 metres as the race entered its closing stages. However, Alemu maintained her composure and extended her advantage in the final kilometre. The 19-year-old crossed the finish line in 1:06:35 to secure the title. Busienei finished second in 1:07:01, while Chepkwony claimed third in 1:07:32. Pre-race favourite Cheptai finished fourth in 1:07:33 after making a late attempt to overtake Chepkwony. Reflecting on her victory, Alemu said, “I am very happy with my performance. I ran a strong race from the start and maintained my pace throughout. This is only my second international half marathon, and I have improved my personal best by almost two minutes, which makes me very happy,” She also spoke about her ambitions and the experience she hopes to gain in the coming years. “I have been running for only two years, so I am still learning and developing as an athlete. I hope to continue improving, gain more experience and build a strong career in distance running,”
Shailesh Kushwaha dominates in men’s Indian elite race
Twenty-year-old Shailesh Kushwaha won the Indian Elite men’s title in 1:05:05 after a closely fought contest. He broke away from a five-man leading group shortly after halfway and maintained his advantage to finish six seconds ahead of Gaurav Mathur, who clocked 1:05:11. Hemant Singh completed the podium in third place with a time of 1:05:37. Kushwaha was determined to deliver a strong performance following disappointment at the 65th National Open Athletics Championships 2026. “I wasn’t happy with how I did at the 65th National Open Athletics Championships 2026, so I was eager to give this run my absolute best. It’s tough to find the confidence to break early and lead for most of the race, but today I was able to do it. I definitely felt the pressure because Gaurav was right behind me all the way to the end.”
Ankita Dhyani dominates women’s Indian elite race
Ankita Dhyani, a World University Games silver medallist in the steeplechase, delivered an outstanding performance to win the Indian Elite women’s title in 1:12:46. The athlete, who trains in the United States, broke away from the Indian field early and ran alongside the international elite competitors. Her winning time was more than five minutes faster than her previous personal best. Debutant Soniya finished second in 1:14:56, while Bhagirathi took third place in 1:15:51. Former champion Lili Das finished fourth in a personal best of 1:16:20. Dhyani expressed satisfaction with her performance while suggesting that Indian women could make further progress in half-marathon running. “I’ve been training well, and to be honest, the way my training has been going, I think I could have done a little bit better. If Indian women focus more on the half marathon, we’ll soon see the national record broken. I’m very happy that all three of us on the podium are from Uttarakhand. For Shaunae Miller-Uibo, the 400 metres is a race that demands more than speed. It is a test of endurance, composure and the ability to push through discomfort when the finish line is within sight but the body is beginning to give in. A two-time Olympic champion, Miller-Uibo knows what it takes to conquer one of athletics' most demanding events. Having won gold in the women's 400m at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympics, the Bahamian sprinter has experienced the exhilaration of reaching the top of the podium. But beneath those triumphs lies the physical and mental battle that defines the one-lap race. Asked what goes through her mind during the final 100 metres, when fatigue sets in and the finish line approaches, Miller-Uibo, who is in Delhi as the International Event Ambassador for the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon 2026 offered a glimpse into the reality of competing in the event. “The 400m is a tough event where you don't really feel anything until that last home stretch,” she said. It is in those closing metres that the race can become a battle against the body itself. With fatigue setting in, athletes must find a way to maintain their rhythm and resist the urge to let the mounting discomfort dictate their performance. “I think the main thing is once the pain starts to settle in, you just have to try and walk it out as fast as you can and just stay relaxed,” Miller-Uibo explained. “Breathe and just focus on the finish line.” Her advice captures the delicate balance required in the 400m. Even when the physical demands become overwhelming, staying composed and concentrating on the task ahead can make the difference between losing momentum and carrying the race through to its conclusion. For a sprinter who has twice reached the summit of Olympic athletics, the ability to remain focused under pressure is a crucial part of the challenge. The final stretch is not simply about how much speed an athlete has left, but also about how effectively they can manage the pain and keep moving towards the line. Also Read: IND vs WI, 5th T20I: When and where to watch live streaming in India? Yet Miller-Uibo's understanding of resilience extends well beyond the track. Training, competition and the pressure to perform bring challenges that can affect athletes mentally as well as physically. Learning to navigate those moments, recover from setbacks and return with renewed determination is an important part of a career at the highest level. Miller-Uibo acknowledged that reality, noting how deeply the experience can affect an athlete's mental well-being. “It's been so many things that we go through as athletes. Mentally, it can really mess with you as well,” she said. For her, however, the ability to bounce back is a powerful demonstration of the strength athletes develop through their experiences. “Just being able to bounce back from it, I think shows how strong we are and the way that we accomplish so much,” she added. The mindset developed through years of navigating pressure, pain and uncertainty can become an important part of life beyond professional sport. “Even outside of the track, we take that mentality with us,” she said. It is a perspective that adds another dimension to Miller-Uibo's achievements. Her Olympic titles established her among the finest 400m runners of her generation, but her reflections underline another measure of success: the strength built through the process of pursuing excellence.

At 5 am, when most of the capital lay wrapped in sleep, Delhi felt different. The air was cool — unusually so for October — and carried a quiet excitement. Headlights sliced through the pre-dawn darkness as cars, buses, and bikes converged on Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. Streets that would soon be choked with traffic were instead lined with barricades, volunteers, and an occasional band of drummers. And in the middle of it all, tens of thousands of runners, warming up in patches of streetlight, waiting to write their story on the city’s empty roads. As the sun prepared to rise, over 40,500 people stood shoulder to shoulder, united not by speed or status but by a shared thrill — to run in the Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon 2025.
A Perfect Morning, A Million Smiles
Delhi’s weather, often the great unknown of races, gifted runners a near-ideal morning. A soft breeze brushed past, the skies were clear, and the early light fell gently on faces already lit with anticipation. Strangers became pacers. Volunteers became cheerleaders. The rhythm of footsteps replaced the usual honking chorus. For a few rare hours, the capital felt harmonious — bound by breath, not bustle. “It was a beautiful morning in Delhi, full of energy, with over 40,000 runners and 10,000 women participating,” said Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, capturing the spirit of the day. “This morning truly belonged to the city and its people.”
A Race for Everyone
The 20th edition was as inclusive as it was grand. Beyond the Half Marathon, categories like the Great Delhi Run, Champions with Disability Run, and Senior Citizens Run created space for every kind of participant — from teenagers to 80-year-olds, from professional athletes to first-timers chasing their first finish line. More than 14,000 runners in the Great Delhi Run used their miles to champion social causes — turning personal strides into public statements. Meanwhile, the sight of senior officers from the Army, Navy, and Air Force running together — led by Air Chief Marshal Amar Preet Singh, Lt Gen Rahul R Singh, and Vice Admiral L.S. Pathania — gave the morning a proud, patriotic edge. Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah joined the Half Marathon, his sons in the 10K, making it a family affair. The Champions with Disability Run added another poignant layer. Runners on wheelchairs, with prosthetics, or assisted by guides showed that the marathon’s spirit isn’t measured in minutes per kilometre, but in courage per step.
Elite Runners Set the Pace
At the other end of the field, the action was fast and fierce. Kenya’s Alex Matata stormed home in 59:50 to win the men’s race, while compatriot Lilian Kasait Rengeruk claimed the women’s title in 1:07:20, underlining Kenya’s dominance yet again. Among Indians, Abhishek Pal produced a composed run to lift his third VDHM title, clocking 1:04:17, while Seema dazzled in her debut, winning the Indian women’s category in 1:11:23. International Event Ambassador Carl Lewis, nine-time Olympic champion, watched the spectacle unfold with awe. “It’s amazing to witness the energy and athleticism here,” he said. “The men and women out there today were phenomenal; it just shows how far the sport has come.”
A City Runs as One
Behind the scenes, 200 volunteers, 400 medical personnel, Delhi Police, DMRC, and civic bodies stitched together an operation that ensured the massive event flowed smoothly. Water stations, aid tents, clear signages, and disciplined road closures turned Delhi into a runner’s city — if only for a morning.
A Morning to Remember
By the time the city’s usual traffic took over, the runners had long crossed their finish lines. Medals hung around sweaty necks, exhausted faces were stretched into wide grins, and the sun now shone on streets that, for a brief dawn, had belonged to dreamers. The 20th Vedanta Delhi Half Marathon wasn’t merely a marathon. It was a dawn ritual — a collective act of joy, discipline, and community. In a city that often wakes up to noise, this Sunday began with rhythm. While most of the India slept, Delhi ran. And in doing so, it reminded everyone what a city can feel like when thousands chase the same sunrise together.

A Perfect Morning, A Million Smiles Delhi’s weather, often the great unknown of races, gifted runners a near-ideal morning. “This morning truly belonged to the city and its people.” A Race for Everyone The 20th edition was as inclusive as it was grand. Elite Runners Set the Pace At the other end of the field, the action was fast and fierce. “The men and women out there today were phenomenal; it just shows how far the sport has come.” A City Runs as One Behind the scenes, 200 volunteers, 400 medical personnel, Delhi Police, DMRC, and civic bodies stitched together an operation that ensured the massive event flowed smoothly. Water stations, aid tents, clear signages, and disciplined road closures turned Delhi into a runner’s city — if only for a morning. A Morning to Remember By the time the city’s usual traffic took over, the runners had long crossed their finish lines.

Before most of New Delhi woke up from their sleep, over 40,500 runners flooded Delhi’s streets under perfect weather — a dawn celebration of fitness, unity and joy

Delhi Half Marathon: Joshua Cheptegei takes home crown, Alemaddis Eyayu stuns Cynthia Limo

Top doctors have warned elite runners are taking a major health risk by competing in Sunday's New Delhi half-marathon in the midst of a major coronavirus outbreak and soaring air pollution.

Women's marathon world record-holder Brigid Kosgei from Kenya and Ethiopia's two-time men's winner Andamlak Belihu are among the 49 elite athletes running the 21-kilometre (13.1 miles) race, while thousands of amateurs are taking part virtually.

Organisers say the "highest level of safety standards, with bio-secure zones", have been laid on for the race starting at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.

But with New Delhi recording more than 500,000 virus cases, and air quality in the world's most polluted capital hovering between 'unhealthy' and 'hazardous', health experts said the athletes should think twice.

"It will be suicidal for runners to run the race this time. We have such high levels of pollution, we have the risk of coronavirus," Arvind Kumar, founder trustee of the Lung Care Foundation, told AFP.

"With the presence of this twin threat if people are still running despite knowing everything, well, I have no words to express my anguish."

"Whether you are an international elite runner or you are a small boy from a village, the damaging potential of a damaging agent remains the same," said the doctor.

Toxic mix

Randeep Guleria, director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the country's top research body, told AFP that "in an ideal situation" the race should not be run.

"Because of high levels of air pollution, exercising outside in this weather sometimes can lead to aggravation of underlying lung problems," he said.

"Even if you are an elite runner the air pollution would still affect your lung."

Normally thousands of amateurs would also take part, but because of the coronavirus they have been told to run their chosen route between Wednesday and Sunday and chart their time on an app.

Delhi has been hit by a winter pollution crisis each year for the past decade when crop-stubble burning from nearby states, cold temperatures and car and industrial pollution produce a toxic mix.

This year, the Indian capital is also a major concern in the battle against the coronavirus. India is the world's second worst-hit country behind the United States, with about 9.3 million cases.

The city is considering imposing a night-time curfew because of the rising number of cases, according to media reports.

Kosgei, who is visiting India for the first time, acknowledged her concerns about travelling for the race.

"We have definitely been affected by Covid-19. I had to convince my parents and family back home to allow me to visit Delhi for the half-marathon," she said.

"The virus has affected most of the sporting events. But it is important for us to take care of ourselves."
As in other countries, nearly all sport in India has been cancelled.

After repeated delays, the Indian Premier League cricket went ahead in the United Arab Emirates and the Indian Super League football is being held in a bio-secure "bubble" in Goa.
