<p>Bollywood turned up in full force at Umang 2018, the annual celebrations of the Mumbai Police that has actors performing for the police force and their family members each year. From Shah Rukh Khan to Deepika Padukone to Anushka Sharma, Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Ranveer Singh, Kangana Ranaut- some of the biggest stars were seen at the event on Saturday in Mumbai.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Maharashtra Chief Minister Devender Fadnavis was also present along with his two daughters as his wife, Amruta performed on stage. The night saw performances from many singers including Neha Kakkar, Himesh Reshamiyya and Monali Thakur as well actresses like Kriti Sanon, Malaika Arora and Sophie Choudhary.&nbsp;</p>

Mumbai Police' annual bash had biggest Bollywood stars in attendance.

Bollywood turned up in full force at Umang 2018, the annual celebrations of the Mumbai Police that has actors performing for the police force and their family members each year. From Shah Rukh Khan to Deepika Padukone to Anushka Sharma, Amitabh Bachchan, Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Ranveer Singh, Kangana Ranaut- some of the biggest stars were seen at the event on Saturday in Mumbai. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devender Fadnavis was also present along with his two daughters as his wife, Amruta performed on stage. The night saw performances from many singers including Neha Kakkar, Himesh Reshamiyya and Monali Thakur as well actresses like Kriti Sanon, Malaika Arora and Sophie Choudhary. <p>Sanjay Leela Bhansali&#39;s <em>Padmaavat</em>&nbsp;is finally releasing on January 25 after a long struggle with the censor board and actor Sonam Kapoor says she hopes no film faces the same fate as the upcoming period drama.<br />

The 32-year-old actor, who made her debut with Bhansali&#39;s <em>Saawariya</em>&nbsp;in 2007, wished the filmmaker all the best for the movie.<br />

&quot;I haven&#39;t worked with him (Bhansali) for 10 years since my first film released. I have been in touch with him. I wish him all the best for his film. I hope the film releases and I won&#39;t wish this (protest) on anybody,&quot; Sonam told PTI.</p>

<p>It is astonishing what adversity can do to you. It has been eight long, painful and mortifying months now for filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali - the master of epic sagas like&nbsp;<i>Devdas</i>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<i>Bajirao Mastani</i>, which have made insane amounts of money while asserting the director&#39;s place as the only true successor to the epic filmmakers K Asif, Mehboob Khan, V Shantaram and Raj Kapoor.</p>

<p>For the past months while my dear friend Sanjay has been attacked physically and emotionally, he has felt like none of the movie moguls mentioned above could have felt. In fact, Sanjay feels like a common criminal, being hounded, threatened, bullied and heckled, for a crime whose nature he isn&#39;t aware of. Maybe he needs to read the law books which say making films in this country can be damaging to the filmmaker&#39;s health.</p>

<p>The&nbsp;<i>Padmavat</i>&nbsp;crisis has broken Sanjay physically and emotionally. For months now, he hasn&#39;t been eating or sleeping properly. And he has started chain-smoking again.</p>

<p>&quot;It&#39;s Lataji&#39;s songs and cigarettes which have kept me going all these months,&quot; he tells me. I stay quiet. I&#39;ve no words of consolation.</p>

<p>To say Sanjay has been to hell and back would be an understatement. Living under the constant shadow of threat and fear is like coping with a fatal disease, a cancer of the spirit that eats away at one&#39;s soul. The very real threats from the fringe groups - and I&#39;ve been first-hand witness to them where callers on his cell phone have been shouting they would do him much worse than merely behead him - is something that no outsider would understand, let alone empathise with.</p>

<p>The lack of real camaraderie within the film fraternity makes it worse for someone as private as Sanjay Bhansali. He became more vulnerable to attack when the attackers realized he had no support system to buffer the bullying. The post-midnight calls became more abusive and the threats more pecuniary in nature, if you know what I mean.</p>

<p>Yes, there were open offers to &#39;stop all protests&#39; in exchange of fiscal favours. Sanjay closed down his cell number. The calls then began coming on his home number, which were sometimes received by his old and ailing mother.</p>

<p>For Sanjay, the most important thing at that moment was to protect his mother from the hurt. He stopped watching news channels at home - and once the attacks gathered momentum and the security was beefed up, he was at home most of the time - so that his mother wouldn&#39;t be exposed to her son&#39;s vilification. But then, she would read about Sanjay&#39;s demonising the next morning in the Gujarati newspaper that she combed religiously.</p>

<p>The situation at Sanjay Bhansali&#39;s home was beyond depressing. At some point, Sanjay just gave up the fight and stopped thinking about the fate of&nbsp;<i>Padmavat</i>. He left all the marketing decisions to his producers, Viacom 18 Motion Pictures. The decision to release&nbsp;<i>Padmavat</i>on January 25 is the producer&#39;s.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On Thursday,&nbsp;Prasoon Joshi, the chief of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), called Vishvaraj Singh of the Mewar royal family&nbsp;with the request.</p>

<p>Singh of the Mewar royal family spoke to a leading daily about the issue and said that he sought&nbsp;clarifications on certain aspects of the film that stars Deepika Padukone as queen Padmini, considered by Rajputs as a symbol of honour.</p>

<p>A section of historians, however, doubt the existence of the queen and say she is a fictional character first portrayed in a 16th-century poem as having committed Jauhar, the medieval practice in which female royals walked into funeral fires to embrace death over being taken captive by an opponent ruler.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier, Rajput groups staged violent<a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/padmavati-controversy-protests-in-gujarat-maharashtra-24034" target="_blank"> protests</a> all across the country and stopped shooting of the film on several locations, allegedly over <a href="http://www.wionews.com/india-news/padmavati-row-sanjay-leela-bhansali-releases-video-denies-filming-any-dream-sequence-between-rani-padmavati-and-allaudin-khilji-23868" target="_blank">rumours</a> that the director included a romantic scene between the queen and Allauddin Khilji, the Delhi emperor who attacked Mewar&rsquo;s capital Chittorgarh.</p>

<p>Vishvaraj Singh said he has written a letter to Joshi saying he will be able to accept or decline the offer only after some clarifications.</p>

<p>He was quoted:&nbsp;&ldquo;It has been reported to be a fantasy at some place and historical at others. We need clarity on under what genre the film is seeking certification.&quot;</p>

<p>Singh added, The reported involvement of historians in the process of certification so far establishes that the film is of historical relevance,&rdquo; he added.</p>

And as I lapped the visual extravaganza on screen, my Bengali middle-class, literary well-versed parents sat there fuming in their seats - silently nodding their head in disapproval as Paro and Chandramukhi danced together to <em>Dola Re Dola</em>. I even noticed my mother grimacing in pain at one time when Kirron Kher put up a theatrical dance performance explaining Devdas and Paro&#39;s love for each other to the entire village.</p>

<p>A Bengali would rather discuss the shortcomings of the film, give reference to Ray and Ghatak while sipping tea at the local tea stall. He would rather go on a monologue about how Tagore&#39;s Charulata was the best literary adaptation on the big screen. And how Bhansali has always taken copious amount of liberty when he has made films. &quot;Remember <em>Devdas</em>?&quot; he would point out.</p>

<p>But for a Bengali, the outrage would only be limited to that- at the local tea stall, or inside the living room of his home.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For years, Bengalis have had the priorities quite right. They wouldn&#39;t compromise on things that easily and take to streets to protest about a film. This is the community that likes to shut shops every afternoon for an hour-long siesta. This is the community which lets its Chief Minister personally micromanage crowd at the Eden during the KKR&#39;s victory celebrations. So outraging over a piece of art is out of the question.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The only time a Bengali has ever gotten worked up is when the neighbouring state has tried to claim our beloved Roshogolla as their own. No, can&#39;t do mister. Roshogolla is ours. We will take you to court for it and win the case even.&nbsp;</p>

<p>A Bengali would also outrage if his favourite team-Mohun Bagan or East Bengal- does not win the match. But those outbursts are justified. At least we don&#39;t make public death threats, no?</p>

<p>As the saga around Padmavati&#39;s release continues to grow- I, a Bengali, will ask everyone to breathe and take it easy. Take a leaf out of our community. Channelise your anger for the right things- Food, Football, Mamata, GST, Lack Of Jobs etc- but not on cinema. Because you see, art is perceived differently by different people. What you like and think as impactful, may not be liked by the other person. And a mere film on a supposed fictitious Queen will not change the essence of your culture or roots.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Hundreds of people from across the country, including filmmakers and workers, have announced a 16-minute blackout on Sunday to stand in solidarity with Sanjay Leela Bhansali&#39;s controversial film &quot;Padmavati&quot;.</p>

<p>The Indian Films and TV Directors&#39; Association (IFTDA), along with19 other bodies of the film and television industry from across the country, will stop shooting for 15 minutes to protect the right to the freedom of expression of those in the creative field.</p>

<p>The associations that are going to participate in the protest include the Indian Motion Picture Producers Association (IMPPA), Western India Cinematographers Association, Screen Writers Association, The Film and Television Producers Guild of India Limited, Association of Voice Artistes, Cine Costume &amp; Make-up Artiste and Hair Dressers Association, Cine Singer Association, Movie Stunt Artistes Association.</p>

<p>The protest call &quot;Main Azaad Hoon?&quot; will take place at Film City of Mumbai, and will&nbsp;start&nbsp;at 3:30 pm on November 26.</p>

<p>All the shooting units in Mumbai will put off lights and no shootings will take place from 4:15 pm to 4:30 pm.</p>

These people, particularly, Lokendra Singh Kalvi is looking only for cheap publicity.</p>

<p>Actually, this has become the easiest way to appear on TV. As soon as the people have given the statement, then immediately he will become the hero on media and he will start appearing on news debates. Using such foul language makes them celebrity overnight and even media helps them.</p>

<p>How Mr Bhansali has portrayed Khilji will become clear only after watching the movie. To understand his personality, we have to read about him in various popular books on him written by famous historians.</p>

<p>There is this book, &#39;Khilji Kalin Bharat&#39; written by world-renowned historian Saiyid Athar Abbas Rizvi, which has the documented the history from 1290 to 1320.</p>

<p>This book incorporates translation of Ziauddin Barni, Amir Khusrow, Emasi (or Imasi), Yahya, Ibn Battuta, Farishta and Abdullah.</p>

<p>Historians are unanimous about the fact that Khilji was a cruel ruler. He has killed many to acquire and invade. For Allaudin, beheading and torturing someone was a game. There was a huge section of society which was suffering during his rule. After reading the book it is very clear that Khilji is even more dangerous than ISIS leader Baghdadi and Taliban terrorists.</p>

<p>700 years ago Rani Padmavati did Jauhar. The release has been postponed but still, Karni Sena wants the special screening for themselves. Rajput communities are not trusting Mr Bhansali on the content of the movie.</p>

<p>This row is not going to end anytime sooner. History has a portrayal of Padmavati&#39;s Jauhar and Khilji&#39;s brutality.</p>

<p>There are many people who are supporting their argument by saying that it is freedom of expression and speech. Article 19(1) gives freedom of speech but same way article 19(2) says Indian security and integrity must be kept in mind while talking about freedom of speech and expression.</p>

<p>It means freedom of expression is good but one must know his responsibilities and should act with maturity.</p>
