<p>Cyclone Biparjoy made landfall in Gujarat's coastal area on Thursday and brought heavy waterlogging and power cuts on Friday in Gujarat and the adjoining regions of the West Indian state.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Residents in Kutch and Bhuj districts reported major waterlogging with muddy water inundating residential areas. There were also reports of power cuts due to damage caused to power stations and electricity poles.</p>

<p>The IMD chief said that the conditions will be favourable for the advance of the monsoon over east India and some more parts of south India from June 18 to June 21.</p>

<p>Mahesh Palawat, vice president (meteorology and climate change) at private forecasting agency Skymet Weather said, "After causing heavy rainfall in Rajasthan, the system will lead to rain in central and east UP and Madhya Pradesh June 20 onwards. It will pull the monsoonal winds and help the monsoon advance over east India."&nbsp;</p>

It will reach there with a maximum sustained wind speed of 125-135 km per hour, gusting to 150 km per hour.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Biparjoy will make landfall between Gujarat’s Mandvi and Pakistan’s port city of Karachi on June 15. The Met department said total destruction of thatched houses and extensive damage to <em>kutcha </em>houses are expected in Kutch, Devbhumi Dwarka, Porbandar, Jamnagar, Morbi, Junagarh and Rajkot districts. Cyclone 'Biparjoy' updates: IMD warns of flood, power disruption; 95 trains cancelled till June 15

<p>The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a statement on Tuesday (June 15) that the extremely severe cyclonic storm "Cyclone Biparjoy" has weakened into a 'very severe'&nbsp;cyclonic storm category.</p>

<p>According to India's weather agency, the cyclone has been moving northwards at a speed of five kilometres per hour and is centred approximately 290 km&nbsp;southwest of Porbandar, Gujarat. It added that the cyclone is expected to cross Gujarat's Saurashtra and Kutch regions as well as the adjoining Pakistan coasts on Thursday. The department has issued an orange alert for the regions in view of the cyclone, Hindustan Times reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>IMD on Monday said that Cyclone Biparjoy is expected to cross Gujarat's Jakhau Port on June 15 as a very severe cyclonic storm, after issuing an orange alert, the department said, "VSCS Biparjoy lay centered at 0230 IST of the 13th June, 2023 over Northeast and adjoining Eastcentral Arabian Sea about 290 km southwest of Porbandar &amp; 360 km south-southwest of Jakhau Port. To cross Saurashtra &amp; Kutch near Jakhau Port by evening of 15th June as a VSCS."</p>

<p>The department said that the cyclone is likely to enter southwest Rajasthan on June 16.</p>

<p>Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday chaired a high-level meeting to review the preparedness of the Centre to deal with the cyclone situation. The official statement stated that the PM has directed senior officials to take every possible measure required to ensure that the state government safely evacuates people living in vulnerable areas.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Recently the Union Health Minister Dr Mansukh Mandaviya in Kachchh held a brief review meeting with all districts of Gujarat on preparedness, ahead of cyclone 'Biparjoy.'</p>

<p><strong>State officials take precautionary steps</strong></p>

<p>On Monday, the North Western Railway (NWR) as a precautionary step cancelled 67 train operations as the cyclone is expected to enter southwest Rajasthan.</p>

<p>Several flights were delayed in Mumbai. However, due to cancelled and delayed travelling operations, passengers showed anger and complained about inconvenience. Several images and videos were posted on Twitter complaining about the airlines asking, "how long will you make us wait?"</p>

IMD predicts heavy rain in Kerala as cyclone Biparjoy intensifies

<p>Cyclone Biparjoy, which was deemed a 'very severe' cyclonic storm, has intensified&nbsp;into an 'extremely severe' cyclonic storm.</p>

<p>However, in a major respite for the populations living along the Arabian sea's coastline in the state of Gujarat, the likely extremely severe cyclonic storm may not hit the Porbandar coast as per the current forecast, according to Indian Meteorological Department.</p>

<p>In its latest forecast, the IMD said the cyclone will move north-northeastwards gradually during the next 24 hours, before moving north-north-westward during the subsequent three days.</p>

<p>The cyclone is expected to make landfall in Pakistan, near Karachi, according to the latest forecast.<br />

Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited spokespersons said there is no impact on refinery operations but added that they are taking precautionary measures.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>Gujarat government fully prepared to deal with cyclone</strong></h2>

<p>The Government of Gujarat on Wednesday said that it is fully prepared to tackle any possible natural calamities. Fishermen in Gujarat have been warned not to venture into the Arabian Sea till June 14.&nbsp;</p>

<h2><strong>India: Regions expected to get affected by Cyclone ‘Biparjoy’</strong></h2>

<p>The cyclone is expected to be felt in several southwestern states in India. By the evening of June 7, the winds may intensify to 95-105 km per hour, gusting up to 115 km per hour in the same area. Adjoining areas of the west-central and south Arabian Sea, and the coasts of north Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa are therefore likely to be most impacted by the storm.&nbsp;</p>

<p>On June 8, the wind speeds are expected to increase further, reaching 115-125 km per hour, gusting up to 140 km per hour from the evening. Areas along the Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra coasts will experience strong winds.</p>

<p>By June 9, wind speeds may escalate to 135-145 km per hour, gusting up to 160 km per hour from the evening, affecting the adjoining areas of the South Arabian Sea, Karnataka, and the Goa-Maharashtra coasts.</p>

<p>On June 10, gale winds with speeds of 145-155 km per hour, gusting up to 170 km per hour, are predicted over the central Arabian Sea. The adjoining areas of the south Arabian Sea, as well as the coasts of north Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra, will also be impacted.</p>

<h2><strong>Impact on weather in India</strong></h2>

<p>With the onset of the monsoon in Kerala already delayed, the Met department on Monday said the cyclonic storm is expected to critically influence the onset of monsoon towards the Kerala coast. The weather department is yet to give a tentative date for the arrival of the monsoon in Kerala while private forecasting agency Skymet Weather said it may happen on June 8 or June 9 that too with a “meek and mild entry”.&nbsp;</p>

By the evening of June 7, the winds may intensify to 95-105 km per hour, gusting up to 115 km per hour in the same area. Adjoining areas of the west-central and south Arabian Sea, and the coasts of north Kerala, Karnataka, and Goa are therefore likely to be most impacted by the storm. On June 8, the wind speeds are expected to increase further, reaching 115-125 km per hour, gusting up to 140 km per hour from the evening. Areas along the Karnataka, Goa, and Maharashtra coasts will experience strong winds.
