A chilling new wave of cyber sabotage is spreading. After mysterious freezer failures at US military bases that the Pentagon is probing as a suspected cyberattack, ten European countries from Sweden to Belgium have now been hit by a similar hacking attack on supermarkets.
Supermarkets have reported problems in Belgium, Estonia, Finland, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany and Sweden, and the significant increase in freezer temperatures has forced retailers to discard food. This came after a similar attack in France. No one has claimed responsibility and no ransom was demanded. European authorities fear a hybrid threat to critical infrastructure. Is this a test run to paralyse the West and a trailer for a bigger war?

Hacker groups linked to Pakistan have made several failed attempts to breach Indian websites on Thursday. The attacks, aimed at platforms connected to children, veterans, and welfare services, were quickly intercepted by Indian cybersecurity teams, according to news agency ANI.

Schools and veteran services among targets

The hacker groups, known as "Cyber Group HOAX1337" and "National Cyber Crew", tried to deface the websites of Army Public School (APS) Nagrota and Sunjuwan, using offensive content that mocked the victims of the recent Pahalgam terror attack, which claimed 26 lives.

‘New low for Pakistan’: India thwarts Pakistani cyber-attacks on Army websites for children, veterans after Pahalgam attack

Noida police, in a big operation, busted a fake call centre operating out of Sector 2, Noida, and arrested eight people for duping victims off $0.7 million. The accused pretended to work for well-established banks and financial institutions, offering fake promises of easy loans, insurance policy renewals, and attractive investment schemes.

How did this take place?

The call centre was operating from plot A-44 in Sector 2, targeting people from multiple states by getting their details from online local search platforms. "They collected 10-15% of the loan amount upfront as fees, but the promised loans never materialised," said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Noida) Ram Badan Singh.
A victim was defrauded and lost $0.1 million, police said. The wicked gang targeted people from different states outside Uttar Pradesh, aware of the fact that it would be harder for them to file complaints or pursue legal action due to distance.
"A few days ago, Sector 18's Raghunandan Jewellers filed a complaint alleging that a man named Naresh, who was also a custodian at the shop, had stolen jewellery. During interrogation, Naresh admitted to the crime and told police that he sold the jewellery and invested the money obtained from it. It was while tracing this money that the call centre—Investors'—was busted from Sector 2," said DCP Rambadan Singh.
During the investigation, it was found that the suspects acquired people's phone numbers online or from vendor sites like Justdial and called or sent them WhatsApp messages, posing as representatives of various banks.

Who was involved? How did they operate?

The accused, aged between 25 and 35, were identified as Ganesh Thakur, Prabhash Jha, Manish Kumar Jha, Parvez Alam, Shubham Yadav, Gyanendra, Shabnam, and Aradhana. They belong to West Bengal, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh.
The gang used easily available online templates to fabricate documents, including fake RBI and government certifications, to appear legitimate. When refunds were demanded by the victims, they sent fake documents to confuse and mislead them further.
“They exploited the trust of people by presenting convincing fake credentials. It’s a well-organised scam,” said DCP Singh.

Trending | India News: "They collected 10-15% of the loan amount upfront as fees, but the promised loans never materialised," said DCP (Noida) Ram Badan Singh.

Also Read: Four fake Delhi police officers raid ‘fake call centre’, get arrested What was recovered? The White House confirms a new breach in a Chinese cyber campaign.

A US judge on Friday ruled in favour of Meta Platforms' WhatsApp in a lawsuit accusing Israel's NSO Group of exploiting a vulnerability in the messaging app to install spyware for unauthorised surveillance, as reported by Reuters on Saturday. US District Judge Phyllis Hamilton in Oakland, California, granted WhatsApp's motion and found NSO Group liable for hacking and breach of contract.

The case will now proceed to trial only on the issue of damages, according to Hamilton, as reported by Reuters. Head of WhatsApp, Will Cathcart, described the ruling as a "victory for privacy." "We spent five years presenting our case because we firmly believe that spyware companies could not hide behind immunity or avoid accountability for their unlawful actions," Cathcart said in a social media post." Surveillance companies should be on notice that illegal spying will not be tolerated," she added as quoted by Reuters.

The entire industry has hidden behind the claim that whatever their customers do with their hacking tools is not their responsibility," Scott-Railton said. "Today's ruling clarifies that NSO Group is indeed responsible for breaking multiple laws," he added. According to Reuters, WhatsApp sued NSO in 2019, seeking an injunction and damages, accusing the company of accessing WhatsApp servers to install Pegasus spyware on victims' devices six months earlier.

According to the lawsuit, 1,400 people, including dissidents, journalists, and human rights advocates, were able to be monitored as a result of the intrusion.NSO argued that Pegasus was used by law enforcement and intelligence agencies to fight crime and protect national security, targeting terrorists, pedophiles, and criminals.

NSO appealed a 2020 trial judge's decision to deny it "conduct-based immunity," a legal doctrine protecting foreign officials performing official duties, Reuters reported. In 2021, the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the ruling, finding that NSO's role in licensing and providing technical support for Pegasus did not shield it from liability under the US Foreign Sovereign Immunities Act. The US Supreme Court declined NSO's appeal of the lower court decision, allowing the lawsuit to proceed.
