The study, published in Science Advances, as per The Guardian, is the most comprehensive analysis of in-custody deaths since 2020.

It found that there was an alarming surge in mortality rates within prisons compared to the previous years.

As per the report, "Covid-19 was the primary driver for increases in mortality due to natural causes; some states also experienced substantial increases due to unnatural causes."

<h2>Data source</h2>

To compile a comprehensive understanding of the impact of COVID-19 within prisons, the study draws data from 49 states and federal departments of corrections.

Talking to Courthouse News, lead author Naomi Sugie, an associate professor of criminology, law, and society at the University of California at Irvine, emphasised that the actual toll of Covid-19 has been little understood.

Sugie's team "staffed a hotline and started this archival project hearing what people were going through in California prisons".

They studied the effect of COVID-19 in California prisons after lockdowns were imposed in 2020.

As per Sugie, their PrisonPandemic project found that "the conditions that people were describing were so dire and upsetting and really just violations of their health and, some may argue, human rights."

The findings extend beyond the direct impact of COVID-19, and revealed systemic failures. During lockdowns,&nbsp;facility and transparency at the prisons were reduced&nbsp;to zero. It also found that some facilities stopped recording the cause of death that year.

As per the authors, despite the Death in Custody Reporting Act passed in 2000, there has been no publicly available information about mortality in US prisons since 2019.

In 2022, the Bureau of Justice Statistics found that roughly 2,500 prisoners died of Covid-related causes between March 2020 and February 2021. However, this doesn't include a rise in mortality rates of natural deaths or unnatural deaths.

As per Sugie, just like in the general population, a lot of states did not test systemically, "so even if someone died of Covid, their death may not have been recorded as Covid-related".

Study uncovers startling 77% surge in US prison deaths during COVID-19 crisis

Fresh estimates by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that nearly one in 10 COVID-19 cases in the US are from the BA.2.86 variant.

As per the CDC's report released on Monday, this is nearly three times the prevalence estimated by the agency just two weeks ago.&nbsp;

As per a CBS news report, BA.2.86's prevalence is largest in America's Northeast, with the strain blamed for about 13.1 per cent of cases in New York and New Jersey region.

The figures released on Monday mark the first time that the BA.2.86 variant's prevalence has surged enough to be listed as a standalone variant on the CDC's estimates.&nbsp;

"In previous Nowcast updates, BA.2.86 was too uncommon to be shown separately and was grouped with other BA.2 strains," said the CDC.

However, as per the agency, its estimates carry wide margins of error around the COVID-19 variant's prevalence. It said that as little as 4.8 per cent or as much as 15.2 per cent of circulating SARS-CoV-2 cases could be from BA.2.86.

In new research, scientists have found a way to reverse the premature ageing of the brain accelerated by COVID-19 infection, by killing 'zombie' cells. 
 
A team of researchers from the University of Queensland in Australia used lab-grown mini-brains, made with the help of human stem cells, to investigate how&nbsp;variants of SARS-CoV-2 affect brain tissues. 
 
Each of the cells in the body acts as a tiny molecular factory in which essential processes needed for the survival of our bodies are carried out. Dangerous waste products are produced by these processes which build over time and damage the DNA and molecular machinery.

At some point, the cells shut down essentially and are no longer capable of cell division. However, these so-called senescent cells, which are also called zombie cells, start producing proteins and other molecules that can lead to inflammation. 
 
"Senescent cells are known to drive tissue inflammation and degeneration, leaving patients exposed to cognitive impairments like brain fog and memory loss," said Julio Aguado, a research fellow at the university's Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology and lead author of this research, in a statement. 
 
Aguado and his team in the study discovered that SARS-CoV-2 accelerates the buildup of zombie cells which leads to premature aging. 
 
"We found COVID-19 accelerates the presence of 'zombie' or senescent cells, which accumulate naturally and gradually in the brain as we get older," stated Aguado. 
 
"We used the brain organoids (aka the mini-brains) to screen a range of therapeutics, looking for any capable of removing those senescent cells," he added.

<h2>Four common drugs destroy Covid-induced zombie cells</h2>

In the study, which was published in the journal Nature Aging, it was found that four common drugs selectively destroyed Covid-induced zombie cells. These are: navitoclax, ABT-737, fisetin and a combination of dasatinib and quercetin.

The study has also proved how synthetically grown humanlike organs can be used in a laboratory setting. 
 
"Our study beautifully demonstrates how human brain models can accelerate the preclinical screening of therapeutics, while also moving towards animal-free testing, with potentially global impacts," said Ernst Wolvetang, an organoid expert at the Australian Institute for Bioengineering and Nanotechnology, in a statement. 
 
"This same method of drug screening could also help Alzheimer's research and a whole host of neurodegenerative diseases where senescence is a driver,” Wolvetang added.

The WHO&nbsp;said that&nbsp;Chinese authorities attributed the increase to the lifting of Covid restrictions and the circulation of known pathogens such as influenza, Mycoplasma pneumoniae (a common bacterial infection which typically affects younger children), respiratory syncytial virus, and the virus that causes Covid.

Authorities in China have stressed the need for enhanced disease surveillance in healthcare facilities and community settings. They have also emphasised expanding the capacity of the health system&nbsp;which is being "overwhelmed"&nbsp;due to&nbsp;more children getting infected.

<h2>Spotlight on China's record over hiding emergence of Covid</h2>

The infamous tweet by the World Health Organization on January 14, 2022, that nearly absolved Chinese authorities and downed the red flags raised worldwide over the spread of Covid is back in the spotlight.

The WHO wrote on Twitter (now X): "Preliminary investigations conducted by the Chinese authorities have found no clear evidence of human-to-human transmission of the novel #coronavirus (2019-nCoV) identified in #Wuhan, #China."

A booster shot of Covid vaccine and a flu shot taken together protect your body better from infections than getting them separately, according to a new study presented at an annual Vaccines Summit in the US city of Boston.

The study involved two groups of Massachusetts healthcare workers.

The first group of 12 received the bivalent Covid booster and seasonal influenza shot together. The second group of 30 healthcare workers received the Covid booster and flu shot on different days within the same month.

<h2>What were the results?</h2>

The antibodies formed in both the groups were measured. The research study concluded that the group that had their shots administered together had higher levels of IgG1 antibodies that counter Covid and the specified strain of influenza.

Amesh Adalja, a senior scholar at the Johns Hopkins Center for Health Security, told the Guardian why it was an interesting finding.
