As per clinical senior lecturer, Claire Steves, the study would be of significant interest to people going through long-term breathlessness after Covid.

As per an op-ed, which was recently published, Resia Pretorius, the head of the science department at Stellenbosch University in South Africa, wrote, "A recent investigation in my lab found that there is significant microclot formation in the blood of both acute Covid and long Covid patients."&nbsp;

She discovered a correlation between microclots and lengthy Covid, which she believes is a critical step toward better understanding the disease that affects 100 million people worldwide.

Resia Pretorius and her team discovered large quantities of inflammatory chemicals "locked" in the persistent micro clots seen in extended Covid patients during the summer.

Now, Noseda says there is a "really perceivable" sense of musicians and audiences appreciating the moment, and not looking too far ahead.

"It's a new world for all of us," said NSO executive director Gary Ginstling, explaining that general manager Genevieve Twomey and her team have basically become "an in-house medical team" conducting weekly testing and monitoring.

Twomey said "very few" positive results had been detected so far within the orchestra.

But in Texas, the Dallas Symphony Orchestra was forced to cancel two concerts and cut planned works from two others this month because they could not replace key musicians who had tested positive.

"Omicron has been particularly challenging because it's so contagious and prevalent," DSO president and CEO Kim Noltemy told AFP in a statement.

For Jamie Roberts, the NSO's assistant principal oboe player who clearly performs without a mask, "once there was a vaccine, and people could get a vaccine, I felt really safe."

Colin Williams, the associate principal trombone player at the New York Philharmonic, agreed that protocols in place had been "worth it," ensuring the musicians' safety and that of their loved ones at home.

"I personally feel that when I'm at work, I don't feel like I'm in danger," Williams told AFP.

Roberts, 37, says she is thrilled to be back on stage, but before that became possible, she helped shape the orchestra's virtual programming, dubbed NSO at Home.&nbsp;

Many other US classical ensembles launched similar initiatives to keep attendees engaged.

After several countries in Europe registered record number of covid-9 infections, some countries have taken steps targeting the unvaccinated while others recently lifted and anti-covid restrictions.

Cases have decreased in states such as New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Maryland, plus Washington, D.C.

That's prompted some health officials to strike a cautious optimist tone on the trajectory of the pandemic.

Dr Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease official, told MSNBC on Monday (January 24) that it's reached its peak in certain regions of the country.

Wafaa El-Sadr, a professor of epidemiology and medicine at Columbia University, said she expects the drop in cases to go from east to west across the US.

"I think we're beginning to see already peaking in the United States overall. But does that make that mean that we've peaked everywhere? The answer is no. That will be on a rolling basis across the country," she said.

The Reuters tally shows that nationally hospitalizations are now under 147,000, compared with a peak of 152,746 on January 20.

But in many parts of the US infections continue to increase.

And in some states, including North Carolina and Arkansas, COVID-19 hospitalizations are still setting records.

"I think it's a little bit premature to now change abruptly behaviors," Professor El-Sadr said. "I think what we should do is continue to do what makes sense. And by that, I mean, obviously is wearing masks indoors in any public setting."

The death toll from the&nbsp;Omicron&nbsp;variant continues to rise.
