United States President Joe Biden on Monday signed into law a bill that requires the release of intelligence on the potential links between the COVID-19 pandemic and a laboratory in Wuhan, China. "We need to get to the bottom of Covid-19's origins..., including potential links to the Wuhan Institute of Virology," said Biden in a statement.

Biden said that with the implementation of the legislation, his "administration will declassify and share as much of that information as possible."

Israel's Health Ministry on Friday reported a new coronavirus variant. Three years into the COVID-19 pandemic, this new variant has left the global community flabbergasted. As per local media reports, two people returning from abroad were identified to be infected with the new Covid variant. Upon their return&nbsp;to Israel’s Ben-Gurion International Airport, the couple had undergone a&nbsp;Real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)&nbsp;test. The new coronavirus variant as per Israeli daily Haaretz is a combination of BA.1 or Omicron and BA.2 a sub-variant of Omicron.

An international team of experts has found out that Covid may have spread from infected raccoon dogs that were being illegally sold at the Huanan Seafood Wholesale Market in China's Wuhan. According to a report by The Atlantic on Thursday (March 16), a new analysis of genetic sequences collected from the market shows that these dogs sold at the venue could have been carrying and possibly shedding the virus at the end of 2019.&nbsp;

It is some of the strongest support yet, experts told the magazine, that the pandemic began when SARS-CoV-2 hopped from animals to humans, rather than in an accident among scientists experimenting with viruses. The report said that the new analysis may offer some of the clearest and most compelling evidence that the world would ever get in support of an animal origin for Covid.&nbsp;

As per the report, genetic sequences were pulled out of swabs taken in and near market stalls around the beginning of the pandemic. They represented the first bits of raw data that researchers outside of China's academic institutions and their direct collaborators had access to. The data was posted by researchers affiliated with the country's Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, on GISAID,&nbsp;which is an open-access genomic database.&nbsp;

Scientists in North America, Australia and Europe spotted the sequences, downloaded them and started an analysis. An earlier analysis released in February last year asserted that no animal host of SARS-CoV-2 could be deduced. And any motes of Covid at the market, "had most likely been chauffeured in by infected humans, rather than wild creatures for sale," it said.&nbsp;

However, the new analysis led by three researchers,&nbsp;Kristian Andersen, Edward Holmes, and Michael Worobey,&nbsp;shows that this might not be the case, The Atlantic reported.

After downloading the data from GISAD, the researchers and their collaborators found out that several market samples which tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 were also coming back chock-full of animal genetic material—much of which was a match for the common raccoon dog.&nbsp;

Because of how the samples were gathered and since viruses cannot persist by themselves in the environment, the scientists think their findings could indicate the presence of a Covid-infected raccoon dog in spots where the swabs were taken. Kristian Andersen, one of the researchers, told The Atlantic that raccoon dogs were not tested at the market and were likely removed prior to the authorities coming in.&nbsp;

Andersen underscored that the findings are not direct evidence of infected dogs at the market. “Do I believe there were infected animals at the market? Yes, I do. Does this new data add to that evidence base? Yes," he said.&nbsp;

Raccoon dogs, which are commonly bred for sale in China, are already known to be one of many mammal species that can easily catch and spread Covid.&nbsp;

The report further said that the findings do not rule out the possibility that other animals may have been carrying SARS-CoV-2 at Huanan. This is being done to "better correspond to the current global variant landscape, to independently evaluate Omicron sublineages in circulation, and classify new variants more clearly when required."

As per the WHO, Omicron is the "most divergent VOC (Variant Of Concern) seen to date."

Even after three years of the pandemic, the coronavirus continues to mutate. As per WHO, "The Omicron viruses have continued to evolve genetically and antigenically with an expanding range of sublineages."

Until now, all Omicron sublineages have been classified as part of the Omicron VOC and "thus did not have the granularity needed to compare new descendent lineages with altered phenotypes to the Omicron parent lineages."

The health agency will also update the working definition of VOC&nbsp;and VOI, making the former&nbsp;definitions more specific to include major SARS-CoV-2 evolutionary steps that require major public health interventions.

A WHO-led team concluded in 2021 that the virus had likely been spread from bats to humans via another animal, though more investigation was required. But China claims that no more visits are required.

Since then, the WHO has established a scientific advisory group on dangerous pathogens, but it hasn't made any determinations about how the pandemic started since it claims that important pieces of information are lacking.

3 years on since COVID 'pandemic', WHO chief says finding origins a 'moral imperative'

US lawmakers in the House of Representatives voted unanimously for declassification of US intelligence about origins of COVID-19. The development has come nearly three years after the start of the pandemic which became one of the biggest&nbsp;globe-spanning phenomenon in recent times. US lawmakers voted 419-0 for declassification. The bill will now be sent to US President Joe Biden's desk for his signature.

“The American public deserves answers to every aspect of the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Representative Michael Turner, the chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. He represents the state of Ohio.

Turner said that the information that needs to be public includes "how this virus was created and, specifically, whether it was a natural occurrence or was the result of a lab-related event.”

China was the first country to come into the clutches of coronavirus pandemic. The first cluster of infections was found in the city of Wuhan. The virus soon spread all over the globe bringing economies to standstill due to lockdowns that sometimes lasted for months. It is widely alleged that the coronavirus was a man-made virus and was developed in Chinese labs. China denies all such allegations.

The intelligence that would be declassified as a result of of the legislation will also have information about China's Wuhan Institute of Virology. There are varying opinions within the US intelligence community as to whether the pandemic was a result of a lab leak of coronavirus or its jump to humans from animals.

"Transparency is a cornerstone of our democracy,” said Rep. Jim Himes, of Connecticut, the top Democrat on the Intelligence Committee, during the debate.

Passage of the legislation was indicative of a rare bipartisanship between Democrats and Republicans.

If the legislation is signed into a law, it will require release within 90 days “any and all information relating to potential links between the Wuhan Institute of Virology and the origin of the Coronavirus Disease."

Amid all this, officials from the Chinese city of Xi'an in Shaanxi province said that as part of an emergency action plan to battle the flu outbreak, lockdown can be employed in certain cases.

The plan which was published on Wednesday stated that the city of Xi'an may impose lockdowns in order to fight against future flu outbreaks. However, it describes four levels of severity for future outbreaks and how the metropolis of over 13 million people will respond to each.

At the highest level, the plan suggests, “The city can lock down infected areas, carry out traffic quarantines and suspend production and business activities. Shopping malls, theatres, libraries, museums, tourist attractions and other crowded places will also be closed.”

“At this emergency level, schools and nurseries at all levels would be shut down and be made responsible for tracking students’ and infants’ health conditions.”

Yet given China's history of responding to crises, many people are not taking the plan that calls for a lockdown kindly. They are terming the plan as "excessive."&nbsp;

Xi'an has already suffered a blow last year at the hand of Chinese authorities imposing harsh lockdown in the city to battle against Covid.

Although a lockdown in Xi'an is not imminent, some locals worry that the city's plans of it may cause them trouble again. China abruptly ended its zero-Covid policy in December, however, now residents are nonetheless concerned.&nbsp;

Insisting that these "are the people's vaccines, the people's tests and the people's treatments," it alleges that "instead of rolling out vaccines, tests and treatments based on need, pharmaceutical companies maximised their profits by selling doses first to the richest countries with the deepest pockets".

A study from last year showed that if in 2021, the vaccines had been distributed equitably, lives amounting to "one preventable death every 24 seconds" or that of approximately 1.3 million people could've been saved.&nbsp;

Citing this study, the letter urged leaders and governments to support the ongoing international accord towards a pandemic accord.

A range of current and former UN agency heads and former leaders of more than 40 countries were also among those who signed the letter.

He would pay monthly rent, electricity bills and his son's school fees. &nbsp;

He would also buy groceries and vegetables and leave the bags of ration outside the main door.

The matter came to the police's notice on 17 February when Majhi contacted assistant sub-inspector Praveen Kumar deployed at Chakkarpur police post. A team of police along with medical team and members of the child welfare department broke open the main door of the house and rescued Munmun Majhi and her 10-year-old son.&nbsp;

"Initially, I didn't believe Sujan's claims, but when he made me talk to his wife and son over a video call, I intervened in the matter. The house where the woman was living had accumulated so much filth and garbage that if a few more days had passed, anything untoward could have happened," ASI Kumar told PTI news agency.

“We will thoroughly delete and destroy all data related to the services … to effectively safeguard the security of personal information,” read the statement from the government released on the health code app.

SCMP reported that the process of deletion of date has been completed in the region.

However, there is no uniformity in approach in this regard across the country. Other cities and regions have reportedly expressed differing opinions about the data. Regions such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guizhou have gone for integration of this data with other government platforms in effect, retaining the data with the government.

China provinces take varied options over citizen data taken during pandemic

The latest study on Thursday (February 17) said that protection against Covid from being previously infected lasts at least as long as that offered by vaccination. The study published in the Lancet Journal said that 10 months after getting Covid, people still had an 88 per cent lower risk of re-infection, hospitalisation and death. This made natural immunity at least as durable, if not more so than two doses of Pfizer or Moderna's vaccines against the virus.&nbsp;

"Our meta-analyses showed that protection from past infection and any symptomatic disease was high for ancestral, alpha, beta, and delta variants, but was substantially lower for the omicron BA.1 variant," Thursday's study said. Sharing the findings, the study said that pooled effectiveness against re-infection by Omicron BA.1 variant was 45.3 per cent, and 44 per cent against omicron BA.1 symptomatic disease.

It added the mean pooled effectiveness was greater than 78 per cent against severe disease (hospitalisation and death) for all variants including Omicron BA.1. The protection from re-infection from ancestral, alpha and delta variants declined over time but remained at 78.6 per cent at 40 weeks. But the protection against re-infection by Omicron BA.1 declined more rapidly and was estimated at 36.1 per cent at 40 weeks.&nbsp;

Thursday's study also pointed out that protection against severe disease remained high for all variants with 90.2 per cent for ancestral, alpha, and delta variants and 88.9 per cent for Omicron BA.1 at 40 weeks.&nbsp;

Caroline Stein of the IHME, who is a co-author of the study, said in a statement that vaccines continue to be important for everyone to protect high-risk populations such as those who are over 60 years of age and those with comorbidities, news agency AFP reported on Friday.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Cheryl Cohen, an epidemiologist at South Africa's National Institute for Communicable Diseases, said that in the long run, most infections would occur in people with strong protection against severe disease because of previous infection, vaccination, or both. "These results suggest that similar to other human coronaviruses, there might be a low seasonal hospitalisation burden," Cohen added.&nbsp;
